Collaborative Effort Sees Flower Beds Brighten Up Princes Street

.
Volunteers at work on Princes Street.

IF you go down to Prince’s Street, you’ll notice the results of the huge collaborative effort that’s gone into revamping four flower beds outside the Brandon Hotel, led by  Tralee Tidy Towns volunteers.

The flower bed enhancement, which has been part-funded by the Tidy Towns Ireland  Department of Rural and Community Development Pobal grant and the Kerry County Council Community Support Fund, commenced last month when Tralee Tidy Towns volunteers and students from the CBS The Green students helped to prepare the beds.

The Kerry County Council Tralee MD team added some topsoil and provided mulch and volunteers from Kerry Group HQ helped out the Tralee Tidy Towns team to plant the flowers last week with support from garden and landscape designer Anita Barber who designed the flower beds and the Brandon Hotel who assisted with irrigation.

.

Tralee Tidy Towns Chair, Brendan O’Brien said: “We’re very proud of this project that saw a diverse set of stakeholders come together to improve the appearance of Prince’s St and enhance the area for pollinators. A lot of the plants included in the design are pollinator-friendly like Verbena and Lavender and they will provide food sources for bees and butterflies as they establish, as well as improving the look and feel of the area”

A Kerry Group representative said; “Kerry Group is proud to support the excellent work of Tralee Tidy Towns and look forward to continuing our valuable partnership in the future.”

.

BALLYGARRY Estate Hotel has announced a new 5km trail connecting its grounds to Ballyseedy Woods via two new bridges funded by Kerry County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development as part of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

This project marks a significant milestone in the development of Tralee’s wood walks and trails for tourists and locals alike.

This now offers a seamless connection between Ballygarry Estate walks and Ballyseedy Woods. The 5km looped trail allows visitors to explore the woods while also taking in the backdrop of the Slieve Mish Mountains.

.

“This has been a wonderful collaboration between Kerry County Council & Ballygarry Estate,” said Padraig McGillicuddy, Managing Director at Ballygarry Estate Hotel and Spa. .

“We are thrilled to see this project come to fruition and to have this new amenity for the North Kerry area, for guests & locals alike to enjoy. Of all projects we have done this has been the most satisfying. It will never return the investment but Ballygarry is coming up on 70 years, I felt we owed this to the community that supports us.”

The work was from the joint efforts of Kerry County Council, Tadhg McGillicuddy Engineering, MRG Engineering, and Mike Cronin & Sons Plant Hire over the past three years to deliver this combined 180-acre Woodland and Estate.

Access points to the trails are from Ballygarry Estate or the existing two Ballyseedy carparks north and south.

Padraig explained that enhancing the trail amenity does not stop there. “It has been a part of our Greenway vision for years but it’s great to see the opening in sight. We will continue our vision in the hope of connecting the Estate to the Tralee Greenway in the next year or so. Local funding through Kerry County Council along with €1.5m from Ballygarry has made this all possible,” he said.

Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, warmly welcomed the new amenity: “This is a fabulous addition to our local network of walkways and cycleways and enhances Tralee’s reputation as being home to top-class leisure facilities.”

The purpose was to encourage people to stay off the fragile dune system that is already heavily eroded. Signs were also put in place to help raise awareness about the important role the dunes play in protecting the coastline.

.

Yesterday, Banna Coastcare discovered some of the fencing — which was supplied by the National Parks and Wildlife Service — had been ripped up and burned in a campfire.

Banna Coastcare expressed their disappointment on their social media accounts at the vandalism. They hope the rest of the fencing will remain intact and they can replace the damaged fencing.

Tayto To Bring Interactive Roadshow To Rose Of Tralee Festival

TraleeToday.ie’s coverage of the Rose of Tralee Festival/Féile Thrá Lí is brought to you by CH Tralee…

.

TAYTO is marking 70 years of the original Irish crisp and to celebrate is bringing its interactive roadshow to Tralee this weekend.

The ‘Tay70’ birthday exhibition will showcase Tayto in an engaging and interactive series of experiences including a ‘reeling in the years’ style showcase of the brand, memorabilia, games and fun activities for all ages on Saturday, August 17 and Sunday August 18 in the town centre.

Tayto is an iconic brand that is synonymous with crisps in Ireland. The brand’s foundation dates back to 1954, when Joe ‘Spud’ Murphy spotted a niche in the Irish market for flavoured crisps and the rest, as they say, is history.

Tralee Rowing Club News

.

A member of Tralee Rowing Club has been chosen to represent Ireland next week at the World Rowing Championships in Canada.

Sean Morris will row in the Men’s Under 19 Quad running from August 18-25, at St. Catharines, Canada, who will host the world’s best rowers across Senior, U23, and U19 categories on a challenging 2000m course.

Two time Olympic Gold Medal winner Paul O’’Donovan will also be part of this Irish squad as he competes in the lightweight men’s single.

Tralee Rowing Club are delighted to congratulate Sean Morris and his family on this incredible achievement, our club is delighted to continue with the wonderful success of club member Zoe Hyde at the Olympics with even more of our members flying the flag high for Irish Rowing.

.

Tralee Rowing Club member David Lynch has written an article about Seán’s achievement below…

It is a huge honour for Tralee Rowing Club to have their member Seán Morris compete in the 2024 World Rowing Championships in St. Catharines in Canada.

This is a phenomenal achievement for a club not yet two decades into its existence, which is constantly on the grow and will only further develop thanks to Seán’s pioneering feats.

Seán will row in the stroke seat in the junior men’s 4x boat alongside crew mates Micheal McGrath (Cappoquin RC) Jack Rafferty of St Micheal’s and Rian Claffey from Athlone Boat Club.

Two time Olympic Gold Medal winner Paul O’ Donovan will also be part of this Irish squad as he competes in the lightweight men’s single.

This competition will build on his successful participation and experience at the Coup De La Jeunesse in Amsterdam last year, an indication that Seán was on the path to great things.

Since 2019 Seán has worked towards these impressive achievements under the guidance of his volunteer coaches at Tralee Rowing Club, including his parents Fiona and James.

Their instruction has been crucial in preparing Seán and his fellow juniors for national and, now, thanks to Seán’s determination and grit, international competitions.

They have given generously of their time, including countless early morning sessions and they have travelled to distant venues across the country.

The club would also like to acknowledge that it has taken a village to put Seán in this position and appreciates the generous support of the community and plenty of local businesses which have helped the club to prosper in the past number of years.

Many junior club members would have been involved in national trialling in the past two years, the format for selecting rowers for the international tournaments.

These rigorous tests include a 30 minute long row on the erg machine, a 500m sprint and a 6km time trial (all in 36 hours!!!) Time trials on the water are also held at the National Rowing Centre in Farran Wood.

For those uninitiated, the anticipation and preparation for these tests demand a tremendous amount of psychological and physical conditioning on top of the already hectic junior training schedule.

It is a credit to Seán that he has withstood all these taxing challenges by training strenuously, even in his free time around his Leaving Cert (!!!) with no complaint or grievance to reach the highest stage in world rowing besides the Olympic Games (which he could well reach on his current trajectory!)

In recent times, Seán has spent the past three weeks at an intensive training camp in Cork, pushing himself to his limits to ensure that he brings the best result possible to to his club and his country.

Seán will certainly not be the last TRC junior to compete on the international stage, and his trailblazing efforts, unthinkable previously for such a small club, will hopefully set a high standard that will encourage younger rowers to attempt to replicate his phenomenal achievements.

However, for the moment, we wish this club member who has no limit to his potential the very best of luck.

Commenting, Chief Executive of the Heritage Council, Virginia Teehan said:

“Browsing through the over 2,000 events taking place during National Heritage Week this year gives a sense of the shear variety and colour of our nation’s heritage – they cover nature, culture, music, traditions, folklore, writing, history, architecture, archaeology, archives and so much more. It is also a sign of the strength of the sector, the depth of knowledge people have and their generosity in sharing that knowledge. Many of the events are volunteer led, organised by dedicated people who seek no recompense or adulation. We must never take these people for granted and I will continue unapologetically to mention them at every opportunity, such is their importance not only to National Hertiage Week, but to the preservation of Irish heritage in general.”

Two themed days will take place during National Heritage Week. On Saturday 24th of August, Wild Child Day encourages children and families to explore the heritage in their locality. On Sunday, 25th of August, the Heritage Council and the Local Authority Waters Programme invite people to explore National Heritage Week projects that celebrate water and our connections with it.

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.

Seniors:

We have qualified for the quarter finals of the intermediate championship following our victory over Kilcummin on Sunday.

We maintained our 100% record and so qualified as No 1 seed where, following a draw, we were drawn at home to Fossa next weekend.

The game will be played in Strand Road on Saturday evening at 6pm and is sure to draw a huge crowd. We will have more on this fixture later in the week.

Match Report:

Resilience is not about denying or avoiding the challenges we face. It’s about accepting our circumstances and finding the strength to adapt and grow, even when things seem less than ideal.

We lined out as selected in our final group game vs Kilcummin with the home side drafting in former Kerry minor Keelan O’Shea and James Nagle to their defence.

We had the strong wind at our backs in the opening half and despite conceding the first score of the game to a Paul O’Shea free we reeled off the next four points, all from play via David Moran, BJ Keane, Shane McElligott and the inform Tomás Kennedy.

We were slightly wayward in our attack thereafter with 3  wides from favourable positions before Kilcummin,  with a pointed effort from a free from Paul O’Shea and a point from play from Gary O’Leary reduced the deficit to the minimum, 0-04 to 0-03 just as the clock ticked into the 20th minute.

Donagh Buckley had picked up an innocuous yellow card earlier but when Ryan Carroll retaliated after being fouled the referee brandished a red card and we now had a huge battle on our hands.

Despite being a man down, we upped the ante significantly and notched 7 points from here to the short whistle whilst restricting Kilcummin to just two points.

Much of this good play stemmed from the middle where David was to exert a huge influence plus increased pressure on Brendan Kealy’s kick outs.

We had scores from Gearóid Savage, 2, a pointed free and from play, Tomás Kennedy, Barry John whose attempt to lob the keeper just sailed over and two points from frees from sub Jack Savage – Jack was to go on to have a huge impact on the game and kicked another vital two points in the 2nd half.

The half time score of 0-11 to 0-05 was reflective of our play but the prospects of facing the strong breeze and a man down were daunting to say the least.

The 2nd half began with Kilcummin in command and they had reduced the halftime deficit to the minimum by the 10th minute following 5 unanswered points with Paul O’Shea in particular to the fore.

Jack stemmed the tide in the 14th minute with a pointed free to leave the score line @ 0-12 to 0-10 and the intensity was now significantly ratcheted up.

We next lost Tommy to injury with Gearóid Dillane entering the fray but Paul O’Shea again was the focus as he added a point before making a fine catch on our 21 yard line and finding the net with a rising drive past a helpless Rob O’Connor; trailing 1-11 to 0-12, the signs were ominous.

However, a mix of unity, passion, and a never say die spirit saw us take command around the middle, David and Tom shining out, Ross raiding from deep and Cormac, Ben and Darragh McElligott unyielding in defence.

We now had the momentum, every man hungry for every ball and in Jack we had a matchwinner as he converted two vital frees, one from 45 metres into the wind with Ben Hanafin and Gearóid Dillane both popping over vital scores.

Kilcummin for their part were not done and in the final dying moments they reduced the deficit to one point but as the clock ticked into the red, it was us who were in possession and attacking as the referee brought proceedings to a halt and signalled our advance to the quarter finals.

This was a serious gut check and the triumph was not all about skill – it was about heart, grit and an unwavering belief in our own ability.

Final score:

KO’R : 0-16

Kilcummin 1-12

Team: Rob O’Connor, Darragh McEllligott, Ross O’Callaghan, Donagh Buckley, Ben Hanafin ( 0-01), Jake Foley, Ryan Carroll, David Moran ( 0-01), Tom Hoare, Barry J Keane ( 0-02), Shane McElligott ( 0-01), Padraig Griffin, Gearóíd Savage ( 0-02), Tommy Walsh, Tomás Kennedy ( 0-04).

Subs: Jack Savage ( 0-04), Cormac Coffey, Gearóid Dillane, ( 0-01), Con Barrett.

Juvenile notes:

Academy continued on Sunday morning at 10am in Ballyrickard where each age group enjoyed a fun filled training session while learning key skills. It was great to see such big numbers in attendance.

U8 Girls:

U8 girls played Mitchell’s in Ballyrickard Sunday morning. Some great display of skills and a few points and goals scored. Every girl showed great skill throughout the game.  Thanks to Mitchell’s for coming to play with us..

U10 Girls:

This week the KOR U10s had a great, physical battle against Mitchell’s. Both sides were strong and confident on the ball. We were missing a few players but the nine girls we had,  stood up and put in a stellar performance.

Neither side gave an inch and every ball was fought for. Our girls were exhausted afterwards without any subs but they came off the pitch with their heads held high. Thanks to Mitchell’s for coming and for a really competitive game.

St Brendans Minors:

Well done to Kerins O’Rahillys players Brayden Pierce, Breandàn Meehan, Nick Lacey, Ruarì Kennedy, Sean O’Mahony and Aaron Horgan.

The boys were all members of the St. Brendans minor panel for the opening round game in the minor championship on Monday evening.

St. Brendans prevailed in a hard fought win over South Kerry in Waterville. Next up is West Kerry in St. Pats, Blenerville on Monday, August 12th at 7pm. All support is welcome.

The Annual Rose of Tralee Cup U13 football blitz takes place this Saturday.  All are welcome to come support our boys.  Please keep an eye on our social media pages for more details.

Summer Camp:

And that’s a wrap for another year.  KOR Summer Camp 2024 was a week everyone will remember.  Everyone enjoyed an amazing week full of fun, games, and a few special surprises.

The ice cream van was a huge hit on Thursday afternoon, and everyone enjoyed a well earned ice cream and we were then honored to welcome the newly crowned Ladies All Ireland Football Champions with the Brendan Martin Cup  on Friday morning.

They took time out of their busy schedule to come chat to everyone, sign jerseys and take a few pictures.  Everyone was very excited to see them.

Camp concluded with our Annual All Ireland Final with two groups of three teams playing each other to get to the final.  Well done to this year’s “KOR All Ireland Winners”.

We have to thank our  coaches Breandán, Seamus, Brayden, Tomás, Jamie, Ruairí, Hollie, Lia, Kelly, Fiadh, Taylor and Chloe for all their hard work and ensuring everyone enjoyed the camp.

A massive thank you has to go to Ben Hanafin who coordinated the whole camp all week ensuring everything ran smoothly and everyone was having fun while learning key skills.  Thank you Ben for a fantastic camp this year. You were amazing.

Finally thank you as well to Claire Walsh for all she did this week.  We truly are a very lucky club to have so many fantastic members involved.  We hope everyone enjoyed the camp and we look forward to running it again next year.

Ladies notes

U12 Girls:

Our wonderful u12 girls took a well earned evening off training on the pitch and headed to Bowling Buddies last week!  Thank you very much to the club for this very enjoyable treat. Great fun was had by all.

U14 Girls:

Our Strand Road team had a disappointing start to the North Kerry League at Ballyrickard on Friday night.   We conceded three goals in the first ten minutes which put us on the back foot for the rest of the game.

But it’s very much to the girls’ credit that they came back fighting in the second half, and at one stage were within three points of their opponents.

Full credit in particular to Lilly Hussey, Kellie Hayes and our best player on the night, Ava O’Donoghue, who was unstoppable in front of goals.

Captain Ruby Foley was solid as ever in the back line, while Aoibhinn Corridon, Hannah O’Sullivan and Meadhb Kennedy deserve mention for their outstanding work rate.

All our players gave 100 percent and each one of them has improved in training under the guidance of Tommy and Richie. So we’ll be back stronger for the next game.

The final score was Beale 6-11 to KOR’s 7-2.

U16 Girls:

Well done to our U16’s in the final round of the County League against Na Gaeil Thursday night.  They are now through to the semi final,  opponents to be decided.

Senior Ladies:

Wishing our senior ladies the best of luck in their County League final on Monday night as they play Ballymacelligott at 6.30pm in Austin Stack park.  All support is welcome.

Congratulations to Declan Quill and Senior ladies and management on their fantastic win last Sunday and becoming all Ireland champions.  Everyone in the club is very proud of your achievements.

Kerry had to put the heartbreak of the previous two years behind them and perform at their best on the day – it’s a testament to the management team that they had the girls in such shape mentally and physically to ensure they returned home with the Brendan Martin Cup.

Condolences:

The death of Tommy Quinlan occurred on Friday last 9th August at his home in Ballyrickard Close surrounded by his loving family.

Tommy was always a very proud Strand Road man.

He was involved with Kerins O’Rahillys from his youth as a minor to his time as a mentor at juvenile level to his time as senior executive and Club Treasurer in the 1980’s.

In the decades that followed he always kept a keen eye on the exploits of the Club and took great joy from the county championship win of 2002 and again when they were  crowned Munster Senior Club  Champions in 2022.

The Club wishes to extend its sincere sympathy to his wife Áine,  children Noreen, Maura and Tomás and the extended Quinlan Family.

Tommy was a True Blue – ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam álainn, uasal, Gaelach.

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

Tralee Parnells Minor team that were defeated by Crotta in the Co Championship semi-final vs Crotta in Lixnaw last Thursday

Minor Hurling
Tralee Parnells 3-11 Crotta 2-17 (AET)
Our minor hurlers were beaten in the County Championship semi-final in Lixnaw last Thursday evening, but only after extra time following a great battle with a resilient Crotta side. Crotta were the better side in the first half scoring 10 points in the first half as Parnells found scores hard to come by.

Despite being second best however, Parnells managed to raise a green flag at crucial times to stay in the match, with Will Somers and Liam O’Connell finding the net for Parnells. Half time score: Parnells 2-2 Crotta 0-10.

However the second half was a different story. Parnells got the first 4 points of the second half with points from play from Fionan Ryan (his second) and Dan Maloney and 2 frees from Eoghan Costello. Crotta got the next 3 points to edge into a 1 point lead, but a point from play by O’Connell and 2 points from Eoghan Costello, 1 from play, had Parnells 2 ahead in the 48th minute.

Crotta hit a purple patch with 3 points in a row from their centre forward Evan O’Sullivan, the last a long range free which split the posts in the 60th minute. Parnells had one more chance to level it and a foul on Costello resulted in the same player converting the free to bring the match to extra time.

Dan Maloney put Parnells ahead in extra time but 2-1 without reply left the boys with a mountain to climb. However, a goal from Somers, when he whipped on a lose ball around the goalmouth just before half time in extra time gave Parnells some hope.

However, despite the best efforts of both teams, that was to be the last score, with Crotta running out winners by 3 points who will play Ballyduff in the County Final in Austin Stacks Park next Friday. Well done to the team and management on a great performance which just came up short.

Date: Friday, August 9th, 2024.

Venue: Ballymacelligott

It was an excellent evening for football in Ballymacelligott on Friday when Ballymac hosted Churchill in a crucial Round 2 clash of Group 2 of the Junior Club Championship.

The game kicked off with a bang for Ballymac, who swiftly netted two goals before the lotto sellers could even pack up. The home team held onto their lead until the final whistle, despite a spirited second-half performance by Churchill that saw them outscore Ballymac. But those two early goals were a tough mountain to climb.

Aidan Breen opened the scoring with a point, followed by a goal. Aidan was involved again with Donal Daly to help Vinnie Horan score another. Donal Daly popped over a point, and Ballymac were 2-02 in the lead with eight minutes on the clock.

Donal Daly scored another point before Churchill’s Darragh O’Sullivan opened the scoring for Churchill. Both Donal Daly and Darragh O’Sullivan scored a point for their sides. Michael Herlihy and Michéal Reidy added a point each for Ballymac.

Daragh Regan’s point opened the scoring for Ballymac in the second half. Darragh O’Sullivan followed with the opening point for Churchill. Two Points from Michael Herlihy and Daragh Regan extended Ballymac’s lead from 3-08 to 0-5 with 23 minutes left to full-time.
