New Signage At Fenit To Remind Anglers About Protected Species

NEW informative signage for anglers has been installed on Fenit causeway following concerns highlighted by local anglers and members of Tralee Bay Angling Club of the retention of endangered shark, skate and ray species from the pier.

There are many skate and ray species that can be found in and around Tralee Bay many of these species are listed as protected species in European waters and any retention of these species is prohibited.

Concerns have been highlighted that this information may not be known by all users in the area and so as a result, collaborative new signs have been erected on the causeway to remind any users as to the species protected status and to ensure their ‘Immediate Release’.

.

The signs also include best handling guidance to improve their survival upon release.

The signs have been an excellent example of cross organisation collaboration between the local community, state agencies and NGO’s all of whom are concerned for the survival of these species.

Local angling groups and businesses such as the Tralee Bay Angling Club and The Angling Hub worked closely alongside the Irish Elasmobranch Group to create signs that were clear, informative and eye catching, which also outlines how best to handle these species if encountered.

Martin McGown of the Angling Hub, Tralee has been instrumental in spreading awareness, said “recreational angling is not only important to our business but also to the wider Kerry community and it is important that we look after it so it that it can remain so into the future”

Eugene Farrelly is chairperson of the Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club who maintain a strict catch and release policy for these species said; “There is amazing fish in the bay and people unfortunately don’t know how important they are, they’re very rare and very unique and unfortunately some people want to keep fish for food but it’s like killing the last of a species that might be gone forever if we don’t mind them and it so it is essential that we do”.

The local club members are also supporting the work and research of the Marine Institute to better understand how these species use the bay and who also contributed the content and design of the signs.

Kerry County Council have supportive in the installation of the signs down the causeway which uses clear images to highlight the protection and best handling of these species.

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and the Sea Fisheries Protection Agency (SFPA) also supported the development of the sign with their remit to enforce and maintain National and European policy such as the prohibited species list whereby it describes the protection for these species as “..must not catch, retain on board, tranship, land, store, sell, display or offer for sale prohibited fish species.” And “when caught accidentally these species must not be harmed and must be promptly released back into the sea”

Daly Calls For Extra Counselling Support For Young Travellers

.
Deputy Pa Daly.

SINN Féin TD for Kerry Pa Daly has called on the HSE to provide extra counselling and a drugs support worker for young members of the Traveller Community in Kerry.

Deputy Daly said that young Travellers are in a particularly vulnerable position after a number of tragic incidents in the last few weeks and the gaps in support services are more evident than ever.

“We need a full time Drugs Support worker, like they have in Cork, in Kerry and extra key workers in mental health supports,” said Deputy Daly.

Continued below…

.

“Extra outreach work needs to be undertaken and reaching out to travellers in estates around Kerry. We have an urgent situation in this county that needs to be addressed now.

Deputy Daly added that continued recruitment difficulties across the health service is not helping.

“Although the embargo has technically been lifted, some posts have been removed or suppressed where previously advertised – over two thousand approved posts, according to SIPTU.

“This is also affecting hospital staff workers where, according to local HSE staff I have spoken to, there are ‘significant gaps and shortages in services’. Staff tell me they are overburdened and exhausted.

“Given this, the lifting of the embargo has been, as one staff member put it to me, ‘smoke and mirrors’ as the vital positions cannot be filled.”

Senior Men

The Kerry Petroleum: Premier Junior Football Club Championship Group 2 Round 1
Ballymacelligott Vs Renard
Date: Saturday 3rd August 2024.
Venue: Cromane.

The Ballymacelligott senior team and management travelled to Cromane last Saturday evening to play Renard in the first round of the Kerry Petroleum Premier Junior Championship 2024. The management and squad worked hard all season.

In Kerry, the Championship is everything at inter-county and club level. The Club Championship is the season’s highlight for every club, and Saturday last was a big game.

It was a challenging start for the Ballymac team as they had to line out without six key players who had played in the Premier Junior Final last October. Their absence was felt, but the players who started were determined to give their best.

The match began with Renard opening the scoring with a point, swiftly followed by a fine point from Ballymac’s Donal Daly, levelling the game.

Donagh Quinlan added another for the South Kerry side. Michéal Reidy levelled the game for Ballymac, and Aidan Breen added another to give Ballymac the lead after five minutes of play.

Renard continued playing against the stiff breeze, and Donagh Quinlan levelled the game with a point from a free.

With 15 minutes left in the first half, two fine points from Michéal Reidy gave Ballymac the lead again. Cromane scored their last point of the half from a free. Before the whistle blew, Ballymac added three more from Aidan Breen (f), Micheál Reidy, and James Kenny.

The Half Time score: Ballymacelligott 0-9 to Renard 0-5.

Brendan Kelly opened the scoring for Renard in the second half with a point from play. Two points from frees followed for both teams: Ballymac’s from Aidan Breen and Renard’s from Donagh Quinlan. The next ten minutes saw a lot of play, but neither team registered a score.

With fifteen minutes to go, Renard scored a mighty point from James O’Sullivan’s free kick. The score was Ballymac 0-10 to Renard 0-8. Aidan Breen extended the Ballymac lead by a point from a free. Renard’s never-say-die attitude showed them working hard, and they added two points.

It was now a one-point game. Aidan Breen scored a point from a free, and Fintan O’Sullivan scored a point from play for Renard. The referee blew the whistle. Ballymac had won the game by a point.

Final Score: Ballymacelligott 0-12 Renard 0-11.

Ballymacelligott Team & Scorers. Christy Leen, Josh O’Keeffe, Daniel O’Shea, Seán Rice, Micheál Reidy (0-4), Tadhg Brick, Cian Counihan, Aidan Breen(0-6:3Frees) Cathal Dunne, Adam Sheehy, Vinnie Horan (Captain) Michael Herlihy, James Kenny (0-1), Donal Daly (0-1) and Darragh Regan.

Ballymacelligott Substitutes Introduced:

Daragh Sweeney, Brian Lonergan, Brian Cassidy, and Andy Rogers,

Manager: Ian Blake
Selectors: Tony Silles, Gene O’Keeffe, Mike Broderick & Padráig Laide.

Physical Trainer: Anthony O’Leary. Physio: Eoin Culloty.

We wish Cian Counihan a speedy recovery from his injury during the match. Our warmest thanks to all our supporters, who made their way to Cromane and showed their vocal support, which meant a lot to the players. .

Well done and thank you to Cromane GAA Club for hosting the game and for the organisation put into the presentation.

Our upcoming game against Churchill on Friday, August 9th, at 7.15 pm, is a crucial one. It’s our final home game in the Junior Premier Club Championship, making it a must-attend for all our supporters.

It would be fantastic to have strong home support to cheer the team on, letting them know we stand with them at every game, proudly wearing our colours and giving them our vocal support.

Kerry Ladies

Congratulations to our Kerry Senior Ladies and our very own Roisin Rahilly on their impressive win in the All-Ireland Final on Sunday in Croke Park.

Ballymac took two buses to Croke Park on Sunday last to support the Kerry Ladies in their quest to bridge a 31 year gap since an All-Ireland win.

The journey was certainly worthwhile as our Girls put in a fantastic performance to bring home the Brendan Martin Cup.

A special thanks to the players who gave their time after the game to take pictures with our young players, great memories for them to have.

Ballymac had an involvement on the panel as Roisin Rahilly played during the League and also saw Championship action, starting against Waterford in the Munster Championship.

Senior Ladies

Ballymac Senior Ladies travelled to Listowel on Monday evening last in the final round of the Corrib Oil sponsored Senior League.

We dominated possession from the start and led at the break 1-5 to 0-1, Rachel Creedon scoring our goal with a good low finish to the net.

We continued to pressurise and forced the Emmets goalkeeper in to two excellent saves.

The home side got themselves back into the game with a goal, however Kate Collins goaled to ease the Ballymac nerves, and we ran out winners on a 2-12 to 1-1 scoreline.

Those who impressed on the evening were Ciara Kerins, Grainne Galvin, Jamie Lee O’Connor and Emma Daly in defence while Ashling O Connell and Roisin Rahilly held the upper hand in midfield while forwards Rachel Griffin, Keelin Enright and Sarah Scanlon also shone.

The side have now qualified for the final where they will play Kerins O’Rahillys which is due to take place on Monday 12th, all support would be greatly appreciated, please keep an eye on social media for confirmation of fixture.

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.
Kerins O’Rahillys faithful at the game.

Kerry Ladies:

Pride of place this weekend goes to Declan Quill, his management team and the Kerry ladies who annexed the All Ireland title after a gap of 31 years.

This was the 3rd year in a row the ladies were appearing in the All Ireland final having lost consecutive finals to Meath and Dublin respectively.

However, this year the ladies seemed on a mission and were far too good for Galway on the day.

Congratulations to Declan for a perfectly executed game plan and the pain of past defeats was long forgotten when Niamh Carmody was presented with the Brendan Martin Cup.

Seniors:

Strength in depth was the key factor in our round 2 group game when we defeated Listowel Emmets by 1-16 to 0-11 in Strand Road on Sunday afternoon.

Playing into the breeze in the first half, a breeze that was probably worth 4 or 5 five points to the visitors we found ourselves leading by 1-06 to 0-07, a lead that was fully deserved.

David and Tom controlled the middle in the first quarter and set in motion a series of dangerous attacks which our forwards capitalised upon ; though facing the breeze, we decided to go long, an modh direach, which paid dividends with Tommy winning plenty of good balls and offloading to better placed colleagues.

One such move in the 10th minute saw Tommy find Gearóid Savage and he found the net with a blistering drive.

This left us in the ascendancy @ 1-02 to 0-03 and we shared the next six points with minors from Tommy ( a mark), and frees from both Tom and Tomás – a feature of the first half was the defensive blanket we erected in front of Rob with all our full back line outstanding and our half line being busy and tidy as the need arose – Ben Hanafin was a real thorn in the Listowel side with his searing runs from deep, Jake was efficient and smart on the ball and Ryan Carroll was his customary reliable self.

Listowel defended well with Eddie Healy outstanding on Tommy despite conceding considerable height and they battled well with a good quarter from their midfielders Darragh Leahy and Joejoe Grimes; their main threat up front was Seán Keane who profited from some fouls and Aaron Kennelly who made some good runs from deep.

The 2nd half saw us resume with the introduction of Cormac Coffey at centre forward for Shane McElligott who had picked up a first half yellow card,  and Cormac was soon followed into the fray by the returning Jack Savage and Gearoid Dillane – this was simply too much for Listowel as Tom Hoare now thundered into the game, defending and attacking at will and making openings in a now beleaguered Listowel defence – the return from the trio of Jack, Cormac and Gearóid was seven points – there was simply no way back for the North Kerry outfit, and from the 14th minute where we led by 1-09 to 0-09, we knocked over seven points to two, with Jack, Tomás & Gearóid having the pick of the scores.

Tommy had an unorthodox point when a David “45” was beaten away and his first time volley sailed over the bar.

Listowel battled manfully but try as they might they struggled against our squad all of whom acquitted themselves well which will make an interesting few weeks training in Strand Road as players vie for a place in the starting XV.

A deep squad is vital in a competition as condensed as this is – it allows squad rotation, puts pressure on the opposition and gives the coaching staff the ability to make tactical changes when needed.

The impact from the bench in the 2nd half today was immense – by having quality backup players who can step in and perform at a high level, a team can maintain their performance levels and stay competitive during the season.

We will travel to take on Kilcummin next weekend who, having beaten Listowel last weekend, went down to Laune Rangers today.

A win is vital as it would mean we top the group which would guarantee us a home quarter final against a runner up in one of the other groups.

For the record, Ben Hanafin, was a worthy Clubber Man of the Match – he faced stiff competition from his more illustrious colleagues David and Tommy plus Tom Hoare but he was a constant menace when on the ball and defended extremely well when required.

Team: Rob O’Connor, Darragh McElligott, Ross O’Callaghan, Donagh Buckley, Ben Hanafin, Jake Foley, Ryan Carroll, David Moran ( 0-02), Tom Hoare ( 0-01), BJ Keane, Shane McElligott, Padraig Griffin, Gearóid Savage ( 1-0), Tommy Walsh ( 0-02), Tomás Kennedy ( 0-04).

Subs: Cormac Coffey ( 0-01), Jack Savage ( 0-04), Gearóid Dillane ( 0-02), Con Barrett, TJ Heaphy.

Academy:

Everyone had a well deserved break from the academy this weekend. We hope everyone enjoyed the bank holiday weekend.  We will return to the academy at the usual time of 10am next Sunday, looking forward to seeing you all then.

Congratulations to Ruarì Kennedy and Nick Lacey, who represented Kerry u16s Saturday in a win vs Westmeath after extra time and penalties to reach the final of the Ted Webb Cup. Ruarì saved a penalty in normal time and 2 penalties in the shootout to help Kerry to victory. Well done to all involved.

Our summer camp kicks off this Tuesday 6th August at 10am.  Please check clubzap and social media pages for more details.

Congratulations to our U11 Coach Declan Quill who is joint manager of the Kerry Ladies,  on their fantastic win Sunday and becoming All Ireland Champions 2024.  Everyone in Kerins O’Rahillys is very proud of your accomplishment.  A bus of enthusiastic supporters left from the Club early Sunday morning and were not disappointed by the fantastic performance that they witnessed in Croke Park.  Thanks to all involved in organising this, everyone had a very enjoyable and memorable day out.

Ladies:

Well done to our senior ladies who had a fantastic win Wednesday evening against a very strong Southern Gaels B team in the county league; our ladies showed pure grit and determination right to the very end.

It was great to have Kelly Fitzgerald back in goals as she showed massive leadership from the back and a massive well done to Aoibhin  Mccarthy for taking the big step up to senior level; we would like to commend our backs for a solid performance all round and also our midfielders who fought for every ball and to our forwards who worked hard to the bitter end to get us over the line by a single point – a great performance all round, we now meet Ballymac in the County League final.

Keeping in touch:

We are always on the lookout for news from our members – please let us know via Messenger on Facebook or on the club phone, 085 2095001.

Minor Co. Championship: Tonight (Monday) the Keane’s Supervalu Minor County Championship 2024 kicks off. Good luck to the St. Brendan’s Board team who will be taking on South Kerry in Waterville at 7pm. There are a number of Na Gaeil lads involved in the team.

Senior Men: Round 2 of Club Championship, played in Dingle, Saturday evening last. Final score Dingle 1–17 (4 Geaneys 1–15), Na Gaeil 0–06.

Give us the Geaneys, or at least drop them, and we will play again. Played in a very cold breeze we never really got to grips with a physically stronger Dingle outfit that were much more clinical in their finishing and stronger in the back.

We won the throw in per Diarmuid and Morgan but try as we could we were unable to force any gaps in which to attempt a score.

Our forwards were retaining the ball and had some good movement outside the D that included Goggin, Devine, Sean Barrett, Diarmuid and Andrew. We tried a shot after 3 minutes that was forced wide by some excellent defending.

We won the kickout but again we were kept at bay, outside the D, resulting in another wide after 4 minutes. Again, we had the ball for long periods but finished with a wide on 6 minutes after some good defending by stronger backs.

We forced a 45 after 10 minutes but dropped the effort short. For those 10 minutes we played very well all over the field with centre field sending in some great ball which was met by a rock-solid defence.

Our defence played excellently with the result that Dingle had no clear shot at goal.  On the 12th minute Conor Geaney pointed a free. We replied with a wide on 13. From there to half time Dingle scored 1–07 to 0–02 for us.

Dara Devine pointed a free on 24, the only scorable free that a very disciplined Dingle gave away, and Diarmuid got a fine point from play just before half time. Half time Dingle 1–08, Na Gaeil 0–02.

Playing with the slight breeze we managed to get off a few shots in the second half. Dara Devine got a point from play after some good passing with the final pass coming from Morgan. Jack Bourke got a point on 3 minutes following a good pass from Peter Doyle. Dara Devine scored from a free on 13 minutes.

Kieran got our final score on 23 following some good play by Jack Doyle. Dingle carried on as in the first half leaving the final score Dingle 1–17, Na Gaeil 0–06. We, once again, played with a very depleted side with many of our regular seniors away for various reasons.

We can take heart from the fact that the whole panel gave 100% and there were a lot of positives for the management to work on.

Referee Brendan Griffin and his team were invisible for the hour. No drama. Good job.

Round 3 will see us host Dr. Crokes next Saturday at 4pm.

Senior Ladies: Unfortunately last Monday our senior ladies lost to Scartaglen in Round 3 of the County League.

Senior Men – We played Glenbeigh/Glencar on Sunday at home.  The visitors were victorious on the day by 3 points. We play An Ghaeltacht away next weekend. Details to be issued vis social media during the week.

Senior Ladies – John Mitchels copper fastened their position in their division for 2025 and who knows, may even win their second promotion in a row with a hard fought 3 point win against table topping Killarney Legion in a thrilling encounter in damp conditions at home on Monday night.

Despite playing into the breeze in the opening half, the home side settled the better and following a foul on Lynda O’Connor, Niamh Myers kicked their opening score from a free from about 30 metres out.

Almost immediately Ellie O’Rahilly played a super pass to the inrushing Grace Hamilton and Grace increased the lead with a point on the run in the fifth minute.  Killarney Legion responded with 2 long range efforts from their full forward to level matters by the tenth minute.

Ava Buckley then restored John Mitchels lead with a wonderful score from a very acute angle.  Niamh Myers increased the lead in fifteenth minute with an incredible free from 40 metres into the stiff breeze.

Better was to follow when Grace Hamilton found Shauna Hannafin with a very astute pass and Shauna blasted a goal from the edge of the square to put John Mitchel 5 points in front.

Killarney Legion then responded with 4 points on the bounce, one from a free and three from play to leave the minimum between the sides approaching half-time.  On the stroke of half-time Shauna Hannafin kicked a point from close range to leave the half time score

Killarney Legion began the second half in very determined fashion and immediately won the throw up and following some very intricate passing blasted a goal to take the lead and seize the initiative.

They added 2 further points to stretch into a 3 point lead but some incredible goalkeeping by John Mitches goalkeeper, Kayleigh Collins, who produced a string of fine saves including one where she dived full length to turn a goal bound effort out for a 45 seemed to inspire the home side.

With Tanya O’Connor, Tara Fitzgerald and Erica O’Connor in inspired form in the full back line, Captain Diana O’Keeffe ably assisted by Aoife O’Brien and Shannon Martin drove John Mitchels forward.

John Mitchels then introduced Anna Murphy Stack and Clara Dowd and with Sarah Kilgallen and Simi Ogungsbesan taking a stranglehold in midfield a great run by Sarah resulted in Niamh Myers reducing the leeway with a wonderful long range free.

Almost immediately Niamh added a further point from play and Shauna Hannafin then equalised with a great point from distance.  Shauna then put the home side back in front before Killarney Legion responded with a point to leave the sides level with ten minutes remaining.

Both sided added pointed frees before Emma Carmody and Michaela Murphy added extra impetus to the home side resulting in a foul on Grace Hamilton that allowed Niamh Myers bisect the uprights from a free from a very difficult angle.

Simi Ogungsbesan won the resultant kick out and drove forward before she was fouled and Niamh Myers extended the lead from the resultant free from 30 metres range.

Sarah Kilgallen then won possession and found Diana O’Keeffe and with Diana bearing down on goal she was fouled and Niamh made it a perfect 7 from 7 from frees with her handiest kick of the evening following an exhibition of free taking in very difficult conditions.

Killarney Legion then tried a quick out in an attempt to find the equalising goal but time ran out to leave the final score  John Mitchels 1-13 Killarney Legion 1-10 following a wonderful game of football with no quarter asked or given.

Final Score John Mitchels 4-15 Glenflesk 4-03.

AN incredible day of emotion and elation.

Kerry fans came in their thousands to Dublin on Sunday by planes, trains and automobiles to finally see their heroines reach the promised land after two years of heartache on All-Ireland final day.

But that was forgotten on Sunday evening as the Kerry emphatically won their first All-Ireland Final since 1993.

The fans created a sea of green and gold right around the stadium and were vocal from start to finish, no doubt encouraging the ladies to victory. We were there to capture the colour of the supporters on the day. Scroll down for photos…

REPORT: Joyous Scenes As Kerry Win All-Ireland Final

.

Kerry captain Niamh Carmody celebrates with the Brendan Martin cup as she is lifted up by teammates Cáit Lynch, left, and Kayleigh Cronin after their side’s victory in the TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Senior Championship final match between Galway and Kerry at Croke Park, Dublin. Daire Walsh on an amazing day in Croke Park…

Kerry 3-14

Galway 0-11

Aoife Dillane, Hannah O’Donoghue and Emma Dineen struck goals at Croke Park on Sunday as Kerry convincingly overcame Galway to secure their first TG4 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship title since 1993.

Veteran attacker Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh also helped herself to an impressive haul of 0-6 on a day when the Kingdom collected the Brendan Martin Cup for the 12th time in their history.

This, in turn, moves them ahead of provincial rivals Cork at the top of the roll of honour for the competition.

.

Following early traded scores between Kerry skipper Niamh Carmody and Galway’s Roisin Leonard, the Kingdom stretched two points clear courtesy of unanswered efforts from Dineen and midfielder Anna Galvin.

While Galway brought the gap down to the bare minimum with a fine point by Olivia Divilly, Kerry were proving to be the more clinical side in front of the posts.

Thanks to five points without reply from ever-influential Corca Dhuibhne ace Ní Mhuircheartaigh, including two excellent contributions from play, the Munster champions were firmly in the driving seat.

Galway finally responded with Leonard’s second point of the game, only for marauding defender Dillane to fire a looping shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Dearbhla Gower to offer Kerry a commanding 1-8 to 0-3 buffer on the stroke of half-time.

.

Olivia Divilly got their Connacht counterparts underway on the restart with a fine solo point but Mary O’Connell soon joined her midfield partner Galvin on the Kingdom scoresheet.

Teenage star Niamh Divilly supplemented the earlier effort from her sister Olivia with a fine point, but Kerry remained in the driving seat when Dineen and Ní Mhuircheartaigh both raised white flags in quick succession.

Olivia Divilly did knock over a close-range free at the opposite end, but the final outcome was effectively placed beyond when, just moments after her introduction as a substitute, O’Donoghue clinically dispatched the ball to the Galway net via a Ní Mhuircheartaigh pass.

Now rampant, Kerry added a third goal through Dineen inside a final quarter that also saw O’Donoghue (two) and the evergreen Lorraine Scanlon kicking points.

Galway did find the target through Andrea Trill, Charlotte Cooney, Leonard, Olivia Divilly and Shauna Hynes during this juncture, but Daniel Moynihan’s westerners came up short in their quest for a first All-Ireland senior crown in 20 years.

Scorers – Kerry: L Ní Mhuircheartaigh 0-6 (4f), E Dineen, H O’Donoghue 1-2 each, A Dillane 1-0, M O’Connell, A Galvin, N Carmody, L Scanlon 0-1 each.
Galway: O Divilly 0-4 (2f), R Leonard 0-3 (2f), C Cooney, N Divilly, A Trill, S Hynes 0-1 each.

Know Your Rights: Changes To Parent’s Leave

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

What is Parent’s Leave?

Parent’s leave entitles each parent to 7 weeks’ leave during the first 2 years of a child’s life, or in the case of adoption, within 2 years of the placement of the child with the family.

The leave period remains the same in the case of multiple births, for example if you have twins or if you adopt 2 or more children at the same time.

What changes to Parent’s leave come in from 1 August 2024?

From 1 August 2024:

• Parent’s leave will increase from 7 weeks to 9 weeks for children born or adopted after 1 August 2024
• You can claim the additional 2 weeks’ parent’s leave if your child is under the age of 2 on 1 August 2024 or your adopted child has been placed with your family less than 2 years on 1 August 2024
• You must complete the extra leave on or before your child’s second birthday or within 2 years of the adoption placement
• Parent’s Benefit will also increase from 7 weeks to 9 weeks for each parent (if you qualify)

Continued below…

.

What is the difference between parental leave and parent’s leave?

Parental leave entitles parents to take unpaid leave from work to spend time looking after their children. Since 1 September 2020, both parents can take up to 26 weeks parental leave. You can get more information about parental leave.

Parent’s leave is specifically for parents during the child’s first 2 years.

This table explains the differences between the two types of leave for parents.

.

What are the rules about parent’s leave

You must meet certain criteria to be eligible to take parent’s leave. You must:

• Be a relevant parent
• Take the leave within 104 weeks (2 years) of the birth of the child or in the case of adoption, from the date the child is placed with you (the placement date)
• Give at least 6 weeks’ notice to your employer

The legislation only provides for the minimum entitlement to parent’s leave. Your contract of employment may give you more rights.

Who can take parent’s leave?

Relevant parents can take parent’s leave for eligible children. A relevant parent is one of the following:

• A parent of the child
• A spouse, civil partner or cohabitant of the parent of the child
• A parent of a donor-conceived child as provided for under section 5 of the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015
• The adopting parent or parents of a child
• The spouse, civil partner or spouse of the adopting parent of the child (if the parents have not adopted jointly)

How can I take parent’s leave?

You can take this leave as:

• One continuous period of 7 weeks leave or
• Separate periods of not less than one week

Parent’s leave cannot be transferred between parents – except in specified circumstances such as the death of one of the parents.

Continued below…

.

How much will I get paid during parent’s leave?

If you have enough PRSI contributions, you will get a weekly Parent’s Benefit of €274 per week. This is paid by the Department of Social Protection (DSP). Your employer does not have to pay you while you are on parent’s leave.

However, some employers do pay or top up your pay during the leave period – this is set out in your contract of employment.

Are there qualifying conditions for Parent’s Benefit?

You should apply for Parent’s Benefit at least 4 weeks before the date you start your parent’s leave. If you are self-employed you should apply for Parent’s Benefit 6 weeks before you intend to take parent’s leave. You need your child’s PPS number to apply for Parent’s Benefit.

You must have a certain number of paid PRSI contributions on your social insurance record. Your PRSI contributions can be from both employment and self-employment. You must meet the conditions when you apply. You can contact your local Citizens Information Centre for more information on the PRSI requirements.

If you are getting a Working Family Payment (WFP), you can continue to get your WFP with your Parent’s Benefit as long as you meet the qualifying criteria for both.

Are there any other rules for parent’s leave?

• You are treated as being in employment while you are on parent’s leave (and all other types of statutory leave for parents). You are entitled to return to your job after parent’s leave.
• Annual leave – you can build up annual leave while you are on parent’s leave.
• Public holidays – you are entitled to any public holidays that occur during your parent’s leave.
• PRSI contributions – you can get credited PRSI contributions while you are on parent’s leave.

Can I share my parent’s leave with my partner?

Both parents have an equal separate entitlement to parent’s leave. You cannot transfer your entitlement to your partner.

Where one parent dies, the surviving parent is entitled to leave for the amount of leave the deceased parent did not take from their 7 week entitlement (this is known as transferred parent’s leave).

How do I apply for parent’s leave?

You must give notice to your employer before you can take parent’s leave.

You must:

• Give your notice in writing
• Tell your employer at least 6 weeks before the leave is due to start
• Include the start date, the way the leave will be taken and how long the leave will last

Can my employer refuse my application for parent’s leave?

Your employer can only refuse parent’s leave if you are not entitled to it.

Your employer can postpone your parent’s leave for up to 12 weeks. Your employer could postpone your leave for the following reasons:

• Seasonal variations in the volume of work
• No replacement to carry out your work
• The nature of your duties
• The number of other employees also taking parent’s leave
• Any other relevant matters

What happens if a postponement of my parent’s leave takes me past the 2 year eligibility period?

The eligibility period for parent’s leave (up to a child’s 2nd birthday) can only be extended for up to a maximum of 12 weeks in circumstances where an employer has rejected the original dates within the 2 year period for business reasons.

When making an application for parent’s leave and Parent’s Benefit for dates outside of the 2 year eligibility period, you must submit supporting documentation to include confirmation from your employer detailing the reason for the rejection of the original dates, and confirming your employer has agreed the revised dates with you.

REPORT: Goals Galore As Kerry And Athlone Share The Points

.

David Moriarty reports on an entertaining match last night in Athlone…

ATHLONE TOWN 3-3 KERRY FC

On Friday evening Kerry FC completed their third away game in a row as they faced Athlone Town in the Midlands.

They come to Athlone after a close 2-0 defeat against Cork City in Turners Cross last Friday where goals from Charlie Lyons and Barry Coffey secured all three points for the league leaders.

Kerry FC came into the game hoping to get more points on the board as they have only managed two out of a possible twelve since their 2-1 win over Longford Town on the 13th of June.

Continued below…

.

On the day of the game, Kerry FC announced the departures of both Daire McCarthy and Kevin Williams but were boosted by the news during the week that Cian Barrett was returning to the club where he spent last season on loan from Premier Division reigning champions Shamrock Rovers.

Barrett is due to remain at the club until the end of the season before returning to Rovers at the end of the 2024 campaign. Barrett showed great qualities during his time at the club and Head Coach Conor McCarthy hopes to see more of what was conveyed last season.

Cian Barrett was named in the starting eleven for the game against Athlone along with another start for both Oran Crowe and Finn Barrett who impressed last time out in Cork.

Nathan Gleeson came close after just two minutes when his effort from outside the box was taken quickly and nearly caught out Lee Axworthy at his left-hand post.

Nathan of course scored in Kerry FC’s first-ever League of Ireland win against Athlone last season and nearly got himself another goal in Athlone.

Continued below…

.

Athlone got their first effort on goal when a Dylan Hand header off the back of a free kick on the left side of the box went just wide of Aaron O’Sullivan’s goal. Athlone started to settle into the game a lot more inside the twenty-minute mark but were not able to work the Kerry FC defence as they would have liked to.

Aaron O’Sullivan was called into action for the first time in the twenty-fourth minute when Gideon Tetteh took a shot from the edge of the box and O’Sullivan did well to parry it out from the bottom left corner for a corner which led to nothing.

Athlone had another good chance just three minutes later when Brian Torre found Dean Ebbe for a free header, but he got too much on it and the ball went safely over the crossbar to ease the Kerry FC minds.

Athlone kept ticking away and eventually got their goal in the thirty-third minute as former Kerry FC man Leo Gaxha did well down the left-hand side and passed it across the six-yard box only for a deflection from Andy Spain to take it behind Aaron O’Sullivan and across the line.

Just five minutes later Kerry FC were back in the game as Oran Crowe got his first goal for the club.

Crowe got the ball inside the area and bulldozed his way through to get his shot off and trickled past Axworthy who got a bit on it but not enough to keep out the effort. A fantastic response from Kerry FC who were only behind for a mere five minutes.

Kerry FC had a fantastic end to the first half as they turned the game on its head when they took the lead on the stroke of half time through their captain Andy Spain.

A lovely, delivered corner from Cian Brosnan went all the way to Spain inside the area who had a free shot on goal to put Kerry ahead a minute before the whistle was blown for half time.

Athlone Town started the second half well with a couple of half chances, but nothing stuck as Kerry FC defended very well. Bobby Amadasun came on at half time to replace Finn Barrett for his debut.

It got even better for Kerry FC in the fifty-seventh minute when they were awarded a penalty.

Oran Crowe took a shot outside the box; it struck the arm of Dylan Hand and referee Glen Geraghty had no hesitation in pointing to the spot which Ryan Kelliher slotted with real composure into the bottom left corner.

Athlone nearly got one back in the sixty-third minute when a back-passed header from Andy Spain caught Aaron O’Sullivan off guard. It hit the post and came back to Dean Ebbe who had a glorious chance to get a goal back for Athlone, but O’Sullivan did well to get down and make a fantastic save to keep a two goal Kerry FC advantage.

The third goal put Kerry in full control who played the ball around with great fluidity. Athlone tried their best to get attacks going but Kerry were nullifying the home side’s attacking threat.

The great work from Kerry’s attackers nearly paid off once again when Daniel Okwute had a chance to make it four.

Dylan Hand played a poor pass back to Lee Axworthy which Ryan Kelliher was alive to. Okwute’s angle was tight and his shot along the ground went just wide of the left-hand post.

With five minutes to go Athlone Town got a goal back through Brian Torre. Bobby Amadasun’s half clearance bobbled up to Torre and his half volley hit the crossbar and just went over the line as the linesman raised his flag. Just two minutes later Kerry FC were hit with another blow as Dylan Hand equalised from a corner.

The ball came into the box and Hand got there to finish the ball into the bottom left corner to complete the comeback.

Kerry did their best in the remaining minutes to not concede another and held on for a point on the road. The game seemed to be done and dusted and unfortunately for Kerry they could not hold on and get the result that about eighty minutes of the game deserved.

They are back at home next Friday as they take on Cobh Ramblers in Mounthawk Park as their search for three points continues.

The joint-manager of the team lives in the estate and the residents got together to put up two signs in support of the ladies and Declan this Sunday.

They gathered, wearing the green and gold, in front of the signs earlier this week and asked Declan to come down to view their gesture ahead of the game.

“Thanks to Olive Heaphy for organising it. It’s great to see the kids out in their Kerry colours and looking forward to the game,” said Declan, who appreciates all the support and encouragement the team has received from the Kerry public since the semi-final win.

It gives the girls a big lift to see all these signs and the bunting going up. We hope to see a good Kerry crowd at the game on Sunday,” added Declan.

Meanwhile, Tralee Municipal District councillors voiced their support for the team at their  meeting on Tuesday.

Kerry FC Make Trip To Athlone For Friday Night Football

.

By Ivan Hurley

KERRY Football Club faces their third away game in succession as they travel to Lissywollen to take on Athlone Town on match night 26 of the SSE Airtricity First Division campaign (kick-off 7.45pm).

It’s second against ninth in the division as Kerry face the top two in the league away from home in back-to-back league matches.

Following a 2-0 defeat in Turners Cross to league leaders Cork City, Kerry will be looking for a better overall performance against the league’s in-form side Athlone Town.

Continued below…

.

Following the cup win in Cobh two weeks ago, the Kingdom will be looking to reignite their season with 10 matches remaining but it will be a tough ask against the inform Athlone Town outfit.

Five wins back to back since mid-June has the Midlanders sitting pretty in the playoff places, 13 points safe from collapse out of the positions.

Despite Kerry’s recent upturn in home form, the wait for a league win away from home rumbles on for McCarthy’s men in 2024.

In fact, the club’s sole away league victory came against Athlone Town last season. So Kerry will have to bring their A-game if there is to be a chance of an upset in Athlone.

But Kerry will carry confidence from previous meetings against Athlone which have all been tight affairs. With just a single draw between the sides, neither team has won the previous five meetings by more than a single goal in the club’s short history against each other.

That coupled with two former Kerry men in the home dressing room is sure to add a tasty feel to this one. Leo Gaxha and Lee Axworthy have both swapped the green of Kerry for Athlone’s black in recent weeks. It is definitely not a game to be missed!

Only a single goal has ever separated these two sides in the previous meetings. A 1-1 draw in Mounthawk Park being the exception earlier this year, wins for both Kerry and Athlone have been by the narrowest possible margin over the last 18 months

Speaking to the media earlier this week, James Sugrue said former Athlone man Valerii Dolia is nearer to a return than in previous weeks but will sit this one out. Andy Spain returned from a knock to play the 90 minutes against Cork last time out but goalkeeper Antonio Tuta was sidelined for that one. He is in line to return on Friday.

“We are well aware Athlone are a very good side,” said James Sugrue. “They were very good last year and have strengthened this year as well. But we go up there with the same mentality again, same as we did against Cork. A good footballing side, a lot of speed. They are on the top side of the table for a reason, so we know it will be tough. But like I say, we fear nobody, we will apply ourselves, go there with a plan and give it a good shot’.
