Senior Ladies

Congratulations to our Senior Ladies on their win over Spa of Killarney today. 1-13 to 1-3. Onto the Semi Final of the Bons Secours Kerry Ladies Gaelic Football Association Junior A Championship, away to the Mighty Cromane who had a comprehensive 5-25 to 3-1 victory over ISG. Venue and Time will be decided in due course and put up on Social Media outlets.

A superb first half performance set us on the way to victory with a 1-8 to 1-1 halftime lead, where our forwards were patient in working the ball and our defenders were dogged in their refusal to yield.

Our performance level dropped in the second half, with a bit of sloppiness getting into our play, but with 10 subs entering the fray, 5 on both sides, that was bound to happen.

Thank You for the large and vociferous support today, it was great to see so many out to cheer on our Ladies. See you all in Cromane next Sunday. ##ballymacabu 💙💛

A great performance by Our U.13 team, made of U.11’s, U12’s & U.13’s in a good win against Southern Gaels in Ballymac on Sunday evening. Mighty teamwork from the backs through to the forwards, resulting in many fine scores.

They now progress to the U.13 Championship semi final against Desmonds or Firies, Sunday next. This was a first competitive match for many of the younger girls, and they did not disappoint one bit.

A big thank you to Ruairi O’ Rahilly, who trained the U.12 team last year and Liam Sweeney, currently part of the U.14/U16 girls set up for their help, team performances all round.

U13 Boys

Our U13 boys togged out for the Castleisland District Shield in Castleisland this evening at 5.30. They played a tough game of football against Knock/Brosna. The boys didn’t turn up in the first half, and the half-time score was 1-10 to 3 pts to opposition.

We came out a stronger second half, but it just wasn’t enough. The final score was Ballymac 1-7 to Knock/Brosna 1-14. Thanks to our few U11 boys for helping out.

St Kierans Minors

Well done to the St Kieran’s Minors on winning the County Final tonight. We especially congratulate the Ballymac players on the team and squad: vice-captain Eoin Moriarty, Mairtin McKivergan, Jack Joy, Eoghan Joy, Gearoid Coughlan, Padraig Reidy, Michael Quirke, Conal Savage, Ciaran O’Connell, Gearoid Healy, Michael O’Connor and Cian Harris.

Fé 17 cailíní: Good luck to our u17 girls who will host Kerins O’Rahillys on Wednesday in the County Championship at 6.30pm. Senior Men: Round 1 of the Garvey’s SuperValu County Championship took place last Saturday night in Austin Stack Park where our opponents were Shannon Rangers.

A first minute free from Dara Devine gave Na Gaeil an early lead but Rangers levelled on the 7th minute following a point from their full forward Jack Kennelly. Rangers enjoyed a lot of possession in the first quarter but kicked multiple wides.

A Dara Devine free on 13 minutes put Na Gaeil ahead 2-1 before 2 frees from Rangers either side of a Darragh Reen point from play levelled the game at 3 points each after 20 minutes. The final 10 minutes of the half were shaded by Na Gaeil with points from Dara Devine (free), Dan Goggin and Peter Doyle to 2 points from our opponents leaving Na Gaeil ahead 6-5 at halftime.

Unfortunately for us Shannon Rangers dominated the early minutes of the 2nd half, especially around midfield, and added 4 points on the trot. Peter Doyle then cut the gap to 2 with still plenty time remaining. But it wasn’t to be our night.

Kennelly scored another for Rangers and 2 minutes later they struck for a killer goal to leave them with a 6 points advantage. From there there was going to be no way back for our lads. A late goal from Dan Goggin and a Mark Lynch free were only consolation scores as Shannon Rangers ran out winners by 1-13 to 1-9. Next Saturday in Round 2 we hope for a better result when we take on Spa in Milltown at 4pm.

Changes to Car Park: We would like to make patrons aware of the new wheelchair accessible parking bays and the yellow box for ambulance parking which have been added to the club’s car parks recently. Please keep them free at all times for people who need them.

County Championship:

St Brendans, comprising ourselves, Austin Stacks, John  Mitchels, St Pats, Ardfert & Churchill proved too strong for a resolute South Kerry side in the opening round of the county senior football championship.

We were very well represented with 8 starters along with Austin Stacks, 5 with one player each from John Mitchels and Ardfert.

In addition, Kerry U20 panelists Ben Hanafin and Darragh O’Connor were on the substitutes bench.

The game was a tame enough affair with both sides tied at the break on 0-05 each, Jack Savage contributing 4 points and David Moran with the first point from play – Jack’s third point was the pick of the bunch, a sweet strike off his left into the Mitchels end.

The second half saw St Brendans take greater control and ahead on 0-07 to 0-06, Tomás Kennedy fired a low shot goalwards and though saved, Jack was following up and found the net with a low drive to the corner.

Thereafter, St Brendans controlled the game and ran out worthy winners on a final score line of 1-16 to 0-13 – Jack contributed 1-06, Barry John 0-02, David Moran 0-01, Tomás Kennedy 0-01.

Team:

M Tansley (Austin Stacks); C Griffin (do), J Nagle (do), J Foley (Kerins O’Rahillys; C Barrett (Kerins O’Rahillys), D Casey (Austin Stacks), P White (John Mitchels); D Moran (Kerins O’Rahillys), T Hoare (do); T Kennedy (do), J Savage (do), D Kirby (Austin Stacks); O Ferris (Ardfert), T Walsh (Kerins O’Rahillys), B J Keane (do).

Subs: P Lane (Stacks) for D Kirby ( 34), C Holden (John Mitchel’s) for P Lane (49), M O’Donnell (Austin Stacks) for T Walsh (54), D O’Sullivan (Churchill) for BJ Keane (58), F O’Brien (St Pats) for T Hoare (60)

Brendans no doubt will be happy with this first outing and when one considers that they will be bolstered by the presence of Armin Heinrich, Joe O’Connor and Jack O’Shea they can look forward to the next round with confidence.

The draw for the next round sees St Brendans travel to St Kierans, awaiting venue and date, next weekend.

McElligott Cup:

We made our exit from the Barrett Cup in Castleisland on Sunday when a last quarter capitulation saw Desmonds hit 1-06 without reply to run out convincing winners by 6 points, 1-17 to 2-08.

We were in control in the first half through the good play of Australia bound Seán Collins at centre back, Fenton Collins at midfield and Conor Hayes at centre forward; there was plenty to like about our forward play with good interpassing between Conor O’Sullivan, Sam McCarthy and Conor Hayes which resulted in two green flags courtesy of Gearóid Meehan and Conor O’Sullivan – Conor was unlucky to not add a third goal when his shot was saved on the line.

In defence our full back line of Stephen Nix, Rory Molloy and Sam Pituch stood out and yielded little to their opponents.

The second half began in similar fashion and by the mid way point, both sides had added 4 points each to leave us leading by 3 points, 2-08 to 0-11.

However, we began to tire as Desmonds introduced some fresh legs and were losing the important battles all over the pitch – Desmonds tacked on some fine scores and when their goal arrived, it spelled the end of our campaign.

It was a disappointing outcome in the end but we would like to wish Desmonds all the best as they progress to the semi finals.

Today’s game signalled the end of Seán Collins in a Strand Road jersey for the foreseeable future as he departs for Perth on Tuesday – we would like to wish him a safe journey and every success in pastures new.

Mark Fitzgerald:

Mark announced on Friday last that he was stepping down as Clare senior bainisteoir to take up a position with Tomás O’Sé on the Kerry U20 team. We wish Mark all the best for 2025.

ClubZap:

ClubZap is where you will find all the latest news, results and fixtures for all areas of the club, male or female, senior to under age. If you have not downloaded the app to your phone go to the App Store, download the app and input Kerins O’Rahillys as your chosen club – from here you will be able to play our lotto online, scan the latest news and keep in touch with all that’s happening.

Lotto:

Our club lotto has reached its highest ever jackpot figure now @ €14,000 – whilst the jackpot is the focus at the moment, the weekly sales of tickets are vital to the running costs of the club.

We thank you for your support which is greatly appreciated.

Juvenile Academy:

U13 Boys:

U13B Boys

Our U13 B team came up just a little short Sunday against a very high quality John Mitchels B team in the Central Region Division 7 Final on a score line of 3-14 to 2-08. The progress this group has made is their real achievement this year making a County League final and a Central Region final.

We are super proud of you all;  just a mention for Aaron O Sullivan who was our top performer on the day and a special thanks to the five U11 players who have been a credit to the club all year.

Well done everyone. This wraps up our 2024 season for our B Team,  thanks to everyone for their dedication to training and games throughout the year and thank you to their parents and families for their continued support.

Our U13 A team has a Town League Division 2 final next Sunday 22nd v Ardfert A and a Central Region Division 2 Final the following Sunday 29th September.

Ladies Notes:

U12 Girls:

U12 girls

Our u12s made the trip back to Rathmore Wednesday night for their last county league game. We fell behind in the first quarter but the girls came back out fighting with super work from our midfielders who fed the ball to our forwards and produced some fine finishing making it a very close game. Thanks to Rathmore for having us.

The management team would like to take this opportunity in saying it has been a pleasure to work with some talented young footballers who gave their all week in week out.

It’s great to see how fantastic the girls have improved in every game with a fine winning streak for weeks on end. We are so proud of each and everyone one of them for giving us some great days out. We would also like to thank their parents and family members for their support on the sidelines for every game, it’s great to see and I’m sure the girls loved having you there.

It’s been an excellent 2024 for u12s girls

U13 Girls:

Our u13 girls played out a closely-fought and highly entertaining County Championship tie away to Rathmore on Sunday. Despite leading for most of the game, we eventually lost by a single point. Our girls can hold their heads up high though, having played so well throughout. Lexi Keane got some incredible goals, Hannah O’Sullivan had a brilliant game at wing back and Aisling Donnelly was outstanding at cornerback.

Ava O’Donoghue had another fine game at corner forward and never stopped running until the final whistle, while Sophie Constable and Aoibhinn Corridon were as tenacious as always. Hard luck girls – but we are proud of every one of you for a great day’s performance, despite the result. Final score Rathmore 4-6, Kerins O’Rahillys 3-8

U14 Girls:

U14 KOR Girls

Our Kerins O’Rahillys U14 team played Annascaul/Castlegregory in the North Kerry League in Ballyrickard  Thursday evening. We were neck and neck with the West Kerry girls for much of the first half, but the superior scoring power of the visitors saw them win.  We extend our best wishes to Niamh Lynch for a speedy recovery, and hope to have Taylor Kate Leane back in the blue jersey before too long. Well done to all our players for fighting right up to the final whistle. Our next game is against Na Gaeil.

U15 Girls:

We are away to Cromane in the U15s Championship Quarter Final;  throw in is at 6.30pm in Glenbeigh. All support is welcome.

U16 Girls:

U16 Girls

Well done to our U16 Girls who were at home in the North Kerry Final v Listowel Emmets Wednesday Evening. Fiadh McCarthy was the captain for the game.  It was a very challenging game with both teams hungry for the win. After a tough battle it ended in a draw,  3-5 to 2-8. Replay details to follow.

They also celebrated Aoifes birthday at Training on Tuesday evening.  Happy Birthday Aoife.

Condolences:

We extend our deepest sympathies to Shirley Doody and family on the death of her mother Elizabeth Kelliher – ar dheis go raibh a hanam.

John Mitchels GAA Club news

.

Senior Men – The Junior team won a hard-fought battle in the quarter final of the Barrett Cup beating Glenbeigh/Glencar on a scoreline of 1 – 7 to 0 – 8.

Mitchels started the stronger with early points from Cian O’Brien and Darragh Cunnane (F).Glenbeigh stuck back with points of their own but a long range effort from Brian Costello, Conor Hurley, Cian and 2 points from Darragh (45, F) extended the lead to 0 – 7 to 0 – 2 at the half time break.

Mitchels played against the elements in the 2nd half and found scores hard to come by. Mitchels defended superably through the efforts of Rob Kerins, Aaron McLarnon, Graham Higgins and the very impressive Sam Fitzgerald in particular keeping the Glenbeigh scoring chances at a minimum.

Our midfield had a big impact on the game . Special mention for Conor Hurley who struck for the vital score of the game to leave Mitchels 1 – 7 to 0 – 5 to the good. Glenbeigh to their credit scored 3 unanswered points leading to a nervous last few minutes but Mitchels held out for a narrow 2 point victory.

Special mention most go to veteran goalkeeper Dermot Raggett who looked composed under the high ball and was able to get all kick outs away to a Mitchels man throughout the game.

We now look forward to the Barrett Cup Semi Final next weekend with more details to follow across our social media channels later in the week.

Under 14 Girls – Our U14 Ladies had a fantastic victory over Moyvane away in the second round of the North Kerry League last Thursday evening. It was a great team performance and it puts us in to a very positive position in the table leading in to the last round of fixtures. We play our final north Kerry League game at home on Monday day evening at 7.

Under 16 Girls –  Our U16 ladies County league journey came to an end at the semi final stage against Dingle on Wednesday evening. The training and commitment shown from this group of girls over the past few months has been excellent and our girls played exceptional football to lose out in the end by a narrow margin. We are so proud of the girls who pulled on the John Mitchels jersey this season. Training began in February and we have been super competitive in every game that we have played. The focus now shifts to the U15 and U17 Championship.

Champions of the Dinny O’Connor Lee Strand Invitational Tournament

Under 14 & 15 Boys – Well done to our u14 boys who won the prestigious Dinny O’Connor Lee Strand Invitational Tournament today in Connolly Park on Saturday. We started with a win against a tough Churchill this morning which was followed by another victory over Oranmore of Galway. This ensured we met a very strong Salthill Knocknacarra in the semi final.

Man of the Match for the final presented to Eamonn Kissane

It was another tough match for our boys but we prevailed to win by three in the end. The final against near neighbours and tournament hosts Austin Stacks was sure to be some game and it didn’t disappoint! This game had everything, long range scores tough tackling and accurate kicking football, which in fairness, is a testament to both teams as they really gave an exhibition.

Buoyed by a first half goal from Eddie we played some great football and at one stage went six points up. As expected this Stacks never gave up and got back into the game with some brilliant interceptions and turnovers of their own resulting in scores.

The last few minutes were tense but we pulled away working the ball nicely up the field (after some excellent defence) to our scoring forwards who kicked some great scores to ensure victory for Mitchels. Special mention to Captain Calvin O Sullivan who won Player of the Tournament and to Eamon Kissane who won Man of the match for the final. Well done boys.

Player of the Tournament Gold Boot winner Calvin O’Sullivan being presented with his award by Chairman of Lee Strand Kieran Savage .

Huge thanks to Austin Stacks for a brilliant game and of course hosting the event which went very smoothly from start to finish. Finally a huge congrats to our mentors who at short notice got the boys together for this tournament and to the parents who attended on the day. LOCAL ORGANISATIONS HONOURED AT KERRY COMMUNITY AWARDS

There was a standing ovation for south Kerry-based Cúnamh Iveragh CLG on Thursday night as the group was announced as overall winner at the 2024 Kerry Community Awards.

Cúnamh Iveragh were on Thursday night announced as the Kerry Community Awards Overall Winners for 2023. Representatives of the group are pictured here celebrating their big win at the Rose Hotel on Thursday night. Photo by Tatyana McGough

The night, which took place in the beautiful surroundings of The Rose Hotel in Tralee, was the 17th edition of the annual awards night.

The aim of these awards is to recognise the work of the community and voluntary sector in improving the social, economic, cultural and environmental quality of life in local communities across Kerry.

Cúnamh Iveragh, based in Cahersiveen, supports children and young adults with intellectual disabilities, as well as their families, providing care in a comfortable setting. The group conducts regular meetings where all parents and carers are encouraged to attend and get involved in decision making.

.

The group has progressed over the years. In 2013, it purchased an eight bedroom house in Cahersiveen, with one section of this house subsequently converted into a Day Centre. In 2022, work on a four bedroom respite house also began the site and this was officially opened last year.

Speaking on Thursday night following the announcement, secretary of the group Brendan Murphy expressed the group’s sheer joy – and shock – at their landmark win.

“It’s a complete surprise to us, I was totally delighted for the group and for all the people who’ve been involved down through the years.”

A special award for Best Community Start-Up was also presented to Phoenix Women’s Shed.

Bill Morrell, Chairperson of the Planning Team for the Kerry Community Awards said the night would not be possible without the generous sponsors who continue to support the initiative.

Group Editor of The Kerryman and Chair of the Judging Panel, Kevin Hughes, said it was another special night with an equally special winner.

“We are delighted to have Cúnamh Iveragh overall winners, they are very deserving winners for the vision shown and the brilliant work that they do, much of it behind the scenes.

“These awards were first held in 2004 and 20 years later The Kerryman is very proud to have been involved from the beginning. While it all comes together on nights like these, the success of each awards night is down to a hard working Kerry Community Awards Committee and our judges who are experienced, balanced and fair.”

20 community groups in total were presented with awards on the night with 10 groups receiving gold awards and 10 receiving silver.

PEIL FAOI 7/8/9: Our Under 7/8/9 football at 11am next Sunday, 22nd September, in Caherslee. Never too late to join!

ON THE WEB: Take a peep at Adrienne’s album on the club website gallery. See nice photos snapped at Sunday’s juvenile academy (boys), including Kilcummin boys who were our visitors to Connolly Park. Also search for pictures by Eddie Barrett and by Adam Kowalczyk. Black‘n’Amber everywhere!

PEIL FAOI 11: Football in Connolly Park at 10.50am on Sunday next (22ú Meán Fómhair) and again on Thursday (26ú).

PEIL FAOI 13/14/15: (i) A very successful Lee Strand Football U14 Tournament took place on Saturday last (14th) in Connolly Park. Some outstanding teams participated in the proceedings. Finalists: the Austin Stack Club and the John Mitchel Club. A great local derby! The Lee Strand final was won for the first time ever by Na Mistéalaigh who played very good football and were deserving victors. Promising for local football but very disappointment for our young Rockies! The Rock Club was represented by two teams….with nearly 40 boys involved.

Austin Stack Club Team 1: captain…David Ahern; squad…Oran O’Regan, Conor Maguire, Ryan O’Flaherty, Diarmuid Hennessy, Shea Horan, Mark Riordan, Alex O’Flaherty, Jayden O’Dowd, Michael Carmody, Liam Swords, Billy Kirby, Blake Bowler, Danny Lane, Noah Reidy, Conor Murphy, Tadhg Lucey, Oisín Horan, Kian Cronin. They played in Group A against An Ghaeltacht (AdeS 6-5; An Ghaeltacht 0-5) and Nemo Rangers (AdeS 3-3; Nemo Rangers 2-5).

They defeated Na Gaeil in the Cup semi-final (AdeS 5-7; Na Gaeil 2-2) and were beaten by Na Mistéalaigh in the Cup final (AdeS 0-7; John Michels 1-12).

Austin Stack Club Team 2: captain…Eliot Calleja; squad…Shane Carey, Séamus Keenan, Ediart Topali, Conor Hanafin, Ben O’Leary, Harry Maguire, Ryan Moriarty, Dylan McEvoy, Tadhg O’Regan, Matthew Murphy, Tom Dawson, Jamie McEvoy, Darragh Moriarty, Mark Foley, Coby McMahon, Hugh Brassil, Finn McKenzie, Jamie Quillinan, Rian McCoy. Team 2 played in Group C against the Kerins-O’Rahilly Club boys and Salthill/Cnoc na Cathrach.

They played in the Plate semi-final against Churchill.
What great great football experience for so many boys! Read here next week for accounts of games. All our coaches were and are very proud of their young footballers’ performances.

All boys gave their best in true Rock fashion! We wish the best of luck to all for the rest of their seasons with the U13s and/or U15s. ‘Well done’ to all who were involved in the running of another very successful Lee Strand Tournament! Lá iontach oibre ag oibrithe iontacha díograiseacha dílse! It was so nice to see Nóra O’Connor, wife of the late Dinny O’Connor, and son, Denis Junior, presenting the Denis O’Connor/Lee Strand Cup to the winning captain, Calvin O’Sullivan. (Beannacht Dé le hanam Denis).

And a bit of Rock history from Adrienne: out of the 37 Lee Strand Tournaments that have taken place since 1986, Rock teams have won ten….a great record.

The years and team captains are as follows: 1986…Armin Heinrich whose son, Armin, is on the Kerry senior panel; 1987…Brian Shanahan, a lover of the ash and leather, who worked hard for many years promoting the ‘skilful game’ within our club; 1994…Conor Carroll; 1995…Andy McAllen (beannacht Dé dhilís lena anam); 1996…Martin Courtney who has served the club well; 1998…Stephen O’Mahony; 2003…Craig O’Hara; 2004…Fergal Maunsell; 2012…Robbie Murphy; 2016…Shane Bastible who still kicks the leather sphere.

(ii) ‘Well done’ to our U15 players who contributed significantly to the minor team’s County Championship efforts all the way to that truly spirited final performance v Bordcheantar Naomh Ciarán i Staid an Ghearaltaigh. Three of our U15s made the starting 15! Good experience gained in the county’s biggest stadium! Huge disappointment but setbacks improve character! They should be very proud of their efforts, commitments and achievements.

(iii) ‘Well done’ to our lads who gave of their almighty best on Wednesday September 18th in the U15 Central League Division 1 Final v Na Gaeil in Austin Stack Park. Another great effort and performance by our boys! (iv) We’re still hoping that a Town League will be held in the coming weeks. We’re hungry for more football as we head into the final stages of the season. (Ger Hobbert, Dan Ahern, Adrienne McLoughlin, Ed O’Regan)

MINORS: (i) ‘Well done’ to our minors who did us proud in the Keanes Supervalu Minor County Championship, only barely losing the final to St Kierans in Fitzgerald Stadium. These are our Rock minors who played superb football throughout the season, defeating several quite strong DIVISIONAL teams, and were only pipped in the county final by…..three seconds: Ryan O’Driscoll (capt), Oliver Lata, Eoin Mangan, Fionán Ryan, Aodhán Horgan, Jayden Moriarty, Gavin Casey, Darragh Lyons, Alex Tuohy, Ben Murphy, Rory Lynch, Ronan Carroll, Harry Murphy, Jack Diggin, Cormac Bastible, Jake Carmody, Jamie Casey, Ben Litchfield, Conor O’Regan, Adam Johnson, Leon Sweeney David Mullins, Jack Shanahan, Max Gryzbowski, Jayden O’Dowd, Gabriel Maszorak, Tadhg Falvey, Brian Kavanagh. Final score…AdeS: 1-13; St Kierans: 2-12. They were very unlucky in that final after another fine performance. Great effort, boys! But, remember, boys that you are deserving Kerry County CLUB Champions for 2024.

CLUB GEAR: Club merchandise: log into www.austinstacks.ie (under ‘shop’).

CLUB LOTTO: Thanks once again to all club lotto supporters and promoters and especially to (i) Hussey’s Deli and Newsagency, Cé an Phrionsa, (ii) Carmel Cuiltéir, AdeS, (iii) The Burger Shack, Móin an Bhealaigh, (iv) The Brogue, Sráid na Carraige, (v) Siopa Chaoimhín de Barra, Ollmhargadh, Sráid na Carraige Uachtarach, (vi) Commane’s Bookshop (PC Books), Sráid na Carraige and (vii) O’Flynn Interiors, Sráid na Carraige.

MNÁ CHIARRAÍ: We’ll welcome the Kerry Ladies, All-Ireland champions 2024, to Connolly Park on Sunday. Lá speisialta a bheidh ann.

THE ROCK STILL IN THE RACE: Best wishes to our club senior team in their preparations for their replay on Sunday November 10th! Up The Rock! And ‘well done’ to the Naomh Breandán divisional team, with 9 Rockmen on board, in their victory over South Kerry.

GEARÁN: How come? Our national tv sports news mentioned and showed a ‘clip’ and an interview of only ONE county championship match in Ireland on Sunday night…hurling in Kilkenny…and showed several on across-the-water football! This seems usual practice from ár stáisiún náisiúnta! Shouldn’t we be shown many championship games played in IRELAND? Ca’il an mórtas cine?

NA MISTÉALAIGH: The Tralee John Mitchel Club was in existence in 1886, two years after the founding of the GAA. It is believed that the Club was founded in OAKPARK. Now! They won their first County Championship in 1897 (or rather shared it with Cathair Saidhbhín). They have won 10 senior football championships.

NA STACAIGH: We were founded in 1917. We are the ONLY club in Kerry to have won Senior County Championships in both hurling (4) and football (13), including doubles in 1928 and 1931.

PHOTOS: Jerry Kiernan Tralee 10k Race Is A Sell-Out Success

.

THE Tralee 10k Race saw 330 runners take to the roads around Tralee on Saturday where a Kerry and Irish athletics legend was also remembered.

The race was run this year in memory of Jerry Kiernan, the Listowel man who won so many long distance races back in the 80s and 90s. Jerry’s nephew Philip O’Sullivan ran the race while his sister Eileen was also down for the day.

Race Director Jim McNiece was delighted with how the day went. “It’s been a great success, 400 registered and 330 turned up this morning. The weather held off perfectly and I want to thank Martin Brosnan and the stewards and the staff and residents of Arlington Lodge — our chosen charity for the day — who manned the water stops.”

Cllr Expresses Concerns About Ambulance Service In Kerry

.

Cllr Deirdre Ferris.

SINN Féin Councillor Deirdre Ferris has expressed her grave concerns following a communication by the National Ambulance Service on Friday announcing a reduced service for Kerry beginning on September 23.

Councillor Ferris has seen the communication and said every area of Kerry will be impacted. Tralee will continue to have cover, but at a reduced level.

Continued below…

.

Cllr Ferris said: “It is deeply concerning for the people of Kerry, who are, if this communication is to believed, going to be left without a proper ambulance service from the middle of this month.”

Cllr Ferris said the NAS in Kerry is already understaffed and the service is dependant on overtime to cover shifts.  She is calling on the National Ambulance Service and the HSE to clarify the situation immediately.

REPORT: Champions Score Four As Kerry FC Defeated At Home

.

David Moriarty reports on Kerry FC’s game against Cork City FC last night in Mounthawk Park…

KERRY FC 1-4 CORK CITY

Kerry FC were back in action on Friday evening as they welcomed newly crowned SSE Airtricity First Division Champions Cork City to Mounthawk Park in Tralee.

Cork City regained their spot in the Premier Division last week in the UCD Bowl with a 1-0 win in Dublin.

Malik Dijksteel scored the only goal of the game which was enough for the Rebel Army to put themselves back into Ireland’s elite division.

Continued below…

.

For Kerry FC last week, it was another tough result as a one hundredth minute equaliser from Evan O’Connor cancelled out Sean McGraths goal in the fifty eighth minute as the points were shared in Limerick against Treaty United.

Kerry FC played very well over the course of the ninety minutes but as it has been over large parts of the season it just was not meant to be for the Kingdom on the road.

It was Kerry FC’s third last home game of the season and the last Munster Derby in Mounthawk Park for 2024 so the boys would be going out with the intention of giving a good performance for the nearly sold out Mounthawk Park.

Kerry FC started the game the livelier of the two sides and had a couple of decent chances between the seventeenth and eighteenth minute.

Ronan Teahan did very well to get his cross in and it was delivered into Ryan Kelliher but it was well cut out by the Cork City defence.

The second chance was that bit more threatening. It was lovely link up play once again from the Kerry FC attack with Sean McGrath winning a corner.

The delivery was then met by Cian Barrett who headed on to Ryan Kelliher at the back post but it was just behind Kelliher and he nodded it wide.

Continued below…

.

Jack Doherty then had a free kick from a decent distance on the right side from about thirty yards out. He tried to catch Antonio Tuta off guard by going for the near post but Tuta got there well to put the ball out for a corner which led to nothing.

The deadlock was broken in the twenty-eighth minute when Barry Coffey put City ahead. A lovely dinked delivery into the area from Doherty caught the Kerry FC defence off guard and Coffey rose highest and his header looped over Tuta and into the bottom left corner.

Six minutes before the end of the half, Ryan Kelliher came very close to getting Kerry back on level terms.

Oran Crowe headed the ball across the goal off the back of a lovely delivery from Ronan Teahan but it was just about a foot too far ahead of Ryan and the ball went wide of the Cork City goal

With a decent spell after going down by the goal Kerry FC were delivered with a dagger to the heart on the brink of halftime when Barry Coffey doubled Cork City’s lead.

A corner taken on the left side from Jack Doherty was perfectly aimed onto the head of Coffey to double his goal tally for the evening.

Kerry FC unfortunately could not take the late first half blow out of their heads for the beginning of the second half as Jack Doherty got his goal after getting two assists for the previous two goals.

It was a beautiful strike from distance that Antonio Tuta could do nothing about. Cork were 3-0 to the good and in cruise control in the opening minutes of the 2nd half.

On the hour mark Kerry FC had huge claims for a handball as Nathan Gleeson’s attempted cross was blocked down by what appeared to be an outstretched arm of the Cork City defender but play was waved on despite the pleas from the Mounthawk faithful.

Just after Kerry FC were denied a penalty Cork City were awarded one of their own when Cian Brosnan made the slightest of contact on his marker.

It seemed very harsh at first glance but the decision stood and Barry Coffey stepped up to secure his hat-trick which he did so by dinking it down the centre of the goal.

With twelve minutes left on the clock Ethan Kos got a consolation goal for Kerry FC as a cross into the area from a free kick was not dealt with and Kos made himself a nuisance inside the six-yard box to finish the opportunity and get Kerry FC a goal back.

Cork City would go out eventual winners claiming all three points and showing everyone in Tralee and Ireland exactly why they are back up to the top tier in Irish football. Kerry FC will now try to regroup as they head up to the Carlisle Grounds next week to take on Bray Wanderers on Friday.

KERRY FC TEAM: 1. ANTONIO TUTA, 24. CIAN BARRETT, 6. ETHAN KOS (GOAL ‘76), 5. ANDY SPAIN (C), 3. SEAN O’CONNELL, 8. RONAN TEAHAN, 7. SEAN MCGRATH, 4. ORAN CROWE, 13. NATHAN GLEESON, 9. RYAN KELLIHER, 10. VALERII DOLIA.

Know Your Rights: How To Dispose Of An ‘End-Of-Life’ Vehicle

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

An end-of-life vehicle (ELV) is a car or light commercial vehicle (of less than 3.5 tonnes) which is due to be disposed of or scrapped.

So, when a car gets old and can’t be used anymore, it becomes an ELV. It’s important to recycle and dispose of ELVs properly so they don’t harm the environment.

You must dispose of an end-of-life vehicle using licensed authorised treatment facilities (ATFs). These are also called permitted scrapyards. End of life vehicles contain hazardous materials that can damage the environment.

Continued below…

.

They can pose a risk to public health if not disposed of in a safe manner. For example, vehicles that contain lead acid batteries, lubricating oil, coolant, brake fluid, and catalytic convertors.

To make sure that old cars are disposed of in a proper way, there is a compliance scheme (ELVES) in place. This is to help improve standards in disposing of end-of-life vehicles.

You are committing a criminal offence if you (or an authorised treatment facility) dispose of an end-of-life vehicle illegally.

There is no charge for disposing of an ELV at an authorised treatment facility. When you have given your vehicle to an ATF, you should get a certificate of destruction.

If you (or an authorised treatment facility) dispose of an end-of-life vehicle illegally, you are committing a criminal offence.

Where can I bring my end-of-life vehicle?

You must leave an end-of-life vehicle at an authorised treatment facility. You will find details of these facilities on elves.ie

Each vehicle manufacturer or importer must have a national collection system in place. It must be with at least one treatment facility in every city and council area.

These facilities provide a free take-back service for vehicles of that producer’s brand. Independent treatment facilities are also available.

If you leave an end-of-life vehicle at an unauthorised facility, you will not get a certificate of destruction. You may remain recorded as registered owner of the vehicle on the National Vehicle File.

Authorised treatment facilities are not responsible for transporting your vehicle. You will have to arrange to bring the ELV to the facility yourself.

When you have left your vehicle at an authorised treatment facility, the owner or operator of the facility will:

• Issue you (if you are the registered owner) with a certificate of destruction
• Forward the details of the certificate of destruction to the National Vehicle and Driver File. These records are kept by the Department of Transport

Continued below…

.

What services must an authorised treatment facility provide?

An operator of an authorised end-of-life vehicle treatment facility must:

• Issue the registered owner with a certificate of destruction (either electronically or in paper form)
• Make sure the facility is operated under an appropriate waste licence or permit
• Meet the minimum technical requirements for the storage, treatment and recovery of end-of-life vehicles and the storage of components containing fluids, spare parts, etc
• Keep records of end-of-life vehicle materials for reuse, recycling, recovery and disposal and report these records to local authorities annually

The vehicle must be treated within 10 days of being deposited at the facility.

Treating the vehicle includes:

• Removing the battery or batteries
• Removing the liquefied gas tank
• Removing (or neutralising) potentially explosive parts (including air bags)
• Removing, collecting, and storing fuel, oils, and other fluids (for example, brake fluid)
• Removing any parts containing mercury

All other parts of the car should, where possible, be recycled.

How much does disposing an end-of-life vehicle cost?

You cannot be charged for leaving an end-of-life vehicle at an authorised treatment facility, if:

• You are the registered owner of that vehicle and
• The vehicle is intact

If important parts of your car are gone (like the engine, gearbox or transmission), or there is waste inside your car, you might be charged.

What documents do I need to bring with me?

You must bring the vehicle registration certificate or log book with you.

Can I claim a refund of motor tax?

You may be able to claim a refund of motor tax if there is more than 3 months unexpired tax. You need a certificate of destruction from an end-of-Life vehicle authorised treatment facility. Contact your local motor tax office for more information.

How do I find an authorised treatment facility?

ELVES, the industry compliance authority has a searchable database of authorised treatment facilities (or scrapyards). The website is www.elves.ie

Are there penalties for illegally disposing of an end-of-life vehicle?

You are committing a criminal offence if you (or an authorised treatment facility) dispose of an end-of-life vehicle illegally.

If you do not take your car to an authorised treatment facility, you can be fined €100. If you don’t follow the rules about getting rid of your old car, like getting a certificate that says it was destroyed, you might have to pay a fine of €1000.

The Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015 introduced fixed payment notices (on the spot fines) for certain offences.

Other penalties for offences are set out in Regulation 35 of the Regulations and are:

• Summary conviction: a class A fine or 12 months imprisonment (or both)
• Conviction on indictment: a fine of up to €500,000 or 3 years imprisonment (or both)

• Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said: For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

Finnegan On Films: Harrowing Drama, Wild Adventure And Romance On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, on a mix of genres on TV tonight…

The Call of the Wild (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is one of those wonderful doggie adventures in an awe inspiring landscape.

Set in the 1890’s Klondike Gold Rush, the story follows a beloved pet dog called Buck, a mix of Saint Bernard and Scotch Shepherd, as he is stolen from his California home and sent to the Yukon where his sturdy breed is valued for their strength.

A chance encounter with frontiersman John Thornton (Harrison Ford) has later ramifications for Buck, but in the meantime he has to work as part of a pack dragging a sled that delivers the mail across the Yukon.

Continued below…

.

Buck’s life is hard and harsh, but his spirit and temperament is better than some of the humans he has to interact with, and you will not be surprised at the eventual conclusion.

Starring Terry Notary as Buck thanks to motion capture, Omar Sy, Dan Stevens, Karen Gillan and Bradley Whitford, this is a great Saturday Family Film.

Schindler’s List (Saturday 9.10pm RTE2) is Steve Spielberg’s moving Academy Award winning Holocaust drama, telling the true story of Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), a German businessman who saved the lives of many Jews during the Second World War.

Schindler’s life is changed when he witnesses the systematic liquidation of the Warsaw ghetto population.

With the assistance of his accountant Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley), they made a list of over a thousand Jews whom Schindler “bought” to work in his factories which saved them from the journey to Auschwitz and certain death.

Continued below…

.

The acting in this film is flawless, with Ralph Fiennes as the sadistic Commandant Amon Goth, particularly horrifying and mesmerising at the same time.  John Williams’ score is suitable touching and poignant.

For those of you hopefully celebrating tonight’s Lotto win, It Could Happen to You (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) could either be a warning or an invitation.

Inspired by a true life story, a New York Cop, Charlie Lang (Nicolas Cage) is short of cash and is unable to give his waitress Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) a tip.  He does, however, have a lottery ticket.

He offers to pay her a double tip tomorrow or half-jokingly promises to share his winning should his numbers come up.  Guess what happens then!

Charlie is very generous to those he comes across, and Yvonne buys the diner.  However, Charlie’s wife Muriel (Rosie Perez) is not so impressed with how Charlie is dealing with his windfall.

Daniel Day – Lewis stars in Jim Sheridan’s drama The Boxer (Saturday 10.05pm RTE1) as a former IRA volunteer Danny Flynn who wants to leave his old life behind on his release from a fourteen year stint in prison at the age of thirty two.

As he opens a non-sectarian boxing gym for youngsters, his former colleagues continue to try and drag him back to his old life.

Then Maggie (Emily Watson), his first love and married to his friend also imprisoned for IRA activities, reconnects with Danny. Enjoy!

Black Valley Homes Get High-Speed Fibre Broadband

.

NATIONAL Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the National Broadband Plan (NBP) has today hosted an event in the Black Valley in Kerry to mark the first connections to high-speed fibre broadband in the remote location.

Works to connect the Black Valley are almost complete with most homes and farms in the area able to connect to high-speed fibre broadband.

The remaining build works for a small number of premises in the most remote parts of the valley are set to be completed in the coming months.

Continued below…

.

Black Valley was famously one of the last regions in Ireland to be connected to the electricity grid in 1977.

The completion of these works will mean that residents in the area will have the same access to 1 Gigabit, reliable broadband as any of the almost 290,000 premises that NBI has passed across the country.

Works to connect the Black Valley involved unique challenges with NBI consulting with government officials, conservationists and local residents to ensure that the fibre rollout to the valley caused minimum disruption or impact to the natural beauty and heritage of the region.

Minister of State Ossian Smyth was present at the event which included local public representatives and residents of the Black Valley. Minister Smyth said: “The rollout to Black Valley encapsulates the work of the National Broadband Plan and I’m very proud to be here today to see first-hand the impact that a connection to high-speed broadband will have for local residents and businesses.”

Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland said: “The delivery of fibre broadband to the Black Valley is a significant milestone for NBI, and we are delighted to have end customers already connected and enjoying the benefits of reliable, high-speed broadband. This was one of the most challenging parts of our rollout, and we are delivering it with minimum impact to the natural beauty of the region and without disruption to the Black Valley’s important tourism season.”

KERRY goalkeeper Ciara Butler is the winner of the 2024 ZuCar Golden Glove award.

Ciara’s outstanding save to tip over a blistering effort from Meath’s Marion Farrelly in the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship quarter-final in Tralee on July 6 won the popular vote hosted recently on the Ladies Gaelic Football Association website.

Ciara, from the Castlegregory club, was one of five nominees for the prestigious individual honour, along with Michelle Monaghan (Leitrim), Rebecca Lambe Fagan (Louth), Dearbhla Gower (Galway) and Monica McGuirk (Meath).

Continued below…

.

The ZuCar Golden Glove award for Ciara crowns a magnificent individual season for the 20-year-old goalkeeper, who was the last line of defence as Kerry claimed the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship title with victory over Galway at Croke Park on August 4.

Having suffered back-to-back final defeats in 2022 and 2023, the Kingdom recovered in style to land the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time in 31 years, with Ciara playing a huge role between the sticks.

Almost 3,500 votes were submitted for the Golden Glove award and Ciara’s save accounted for 1,583, well clear of her nearest challenger, Leitrim’s Michelle Monaghan (891).

Ciara was presented with her award at Croke Park today by Ladies Gaelic Football Association President, Mícheál Naughton, and Allyson McCarthy, ZuCar Marketing Manager.

Following the conclusion of the TG4 All-Ireland Championships, Fermanagh’s Eimear Smyth was the leading scorer across the Junior, Intermediate and Senior grades and won the Golden Boot Award.

Eimear’s incredible tally of 8-48 (72 points) was 39 points clear of her nearest challenger, Louth’s Kate Flood. Eimear was also present at Croke Park today to collect her award.

A job came up in Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn in 2002 and she came home to Kerry. Eibhlín said she has really enjoyed her time at the school where she taught infants, second and special education.

“I’ve absolutely loved it here. Great school and great colleagues — a lot of them re very good friends so we’ll stay in touch. The kids and the parents are great so it’s been a privilege to be here, but I’m ready to move on now while I feel young and energetic.”

Eibhlín still lives in her native Ballyferriter and said the only thing she won’t miss is the daily commute to Tralee.

Married to Dubliner Mick Davis, they have three children, Faolán, Oscar and Finn. Eibhlín has loads of plans for retirement involving her hobbies including cycling, hill-walking and travelling. We wish her well in her retirement.

Each pod is soundproof to minimise noise, allowing groups to work without interruptions and distractions.

Students can easily reserve the study pods through MTU Libraries’ booking system, ensuring flexible and convenient access to the spaces throughout the academic year.

Going To The Wells To Create Exhibition At Siamsa Tíre Next Month

.

‘Well, Well, Well?’ opens at Siamsa Tíre in October. Photo by Pauline Dennigan.

A NEW contemporary artwork series, inspired by four of Ireland’s premier holy well sites — Lady’s Well, Rockspring and Tubrid Well, Millstreet in County Cork and St Michael’s Well, Lixnaw and Tobar na Molt, Ardfert in County Kerry — will be exhibited in Siamsa Tire next month.

Artist Marie Brett and blogger/author Amanda Clarke have partnered with a diverse community of holy well custodians, farmers, healers, historians, folklorists, scholars and interested neighbours in creating ‘Well, Well, Well?’ a body of artwork celebrating the role holy wells play in modern-day health and wellbeing.

The artwork spans dance, music, song, photography, print and film and will be premiered at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee, opening on October 3rd with Emmy award-winning poet Alan Cooke, and famed traditional singer, Sonny Egan.

The artwork tells the story of a local lad who visits a holy well in curiosity and encounters its guardian.

Accompanied and guided across three sites, he makes votive offerings, enters into the water and receives elemental healing. He returns fundamentally changed.

The work explores wellbeing, and questions how individuals, communities and governments are meeting contemporary healthcare needs.

The series combines factual community experiences of healing water and earth energy, with reimagined folklore and traditional customs.

The free exhibition will run from October 3 to October 30.
