KERRY goalkeeper Ciara Butler is the winner of the 2024 ZuCar Golden Glove award.

Ciara’s outstanding save to tip over a blistering effort from Meath’s Marion Farrelly in the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship quarter-final in Tralee on July 6 won the popular vote hosted recently on the Ladies Gaelic Football Association website.

Ciara, from the Castlegregory club, was one of five nominees for the prestigious individual honour, along with Michelle Monaghan (Leitrim), Rebecca Lambe Fagan (Louth), Dearbhla Gower (Galway) and Monica McGuirk (Meath).

Continued below…

.

The ZuCar Golden Glove award for Ciara crowns a magnificent individual season for the 20-year-old goalkeeper, who was the last line of defence as Kerry claimed the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship title with victory over Galway at Croke Park on August 4.

Having suffered back-to-back final defeats in 2022 and 2023, the Kingdom recovered in style to land the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time in 31 years, with Ciara playing a huge role between the sticks.

Almost 3,500 votes were submitted for the Golden Glove award and Ciara’s save accounted for 1,583, well clear of her nearest challenger, Leitrim’s Michelle Monaghan (891).

Ciara was presented with her award at Croke Park today by Ladies Gaelic Football Association President, Mícheál Naughton, and Allyson McCarthy, ZuCar Marketing Manager.

Following the conclusion of the TG4 All-Ireland Championships, Fermanagh’s Eimear Smyth was the leading scorer across the Junior, Intermediate and Senior grades and won the Golden Boot Award.

Eimear’s incredible tally of 8-48 (72 points) was 39 points clear of her nearest challenger, Louth’s Kate Flood. Eimear was also present at Croke Park today to collect her award.

DECADES of teaching came to an end this week for a much-loved and respected member of the Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn staff.

Ballyferriter native Eibhlín Ní Bhric has been at the school for 22 years and staff and pupils bid a fond farewell to her as she embarks on her retirement.

Having graduated from St Pat’s teacher training college in Dublin, Eibhlín first taught in gaelscoileanna in Dublin from 1989, staying for 10 years, before moving to Skibbereen in 1999.

Continued below…

.

A job came up in Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn in 2002 and she came home to Kerry. Eibhlín said she has really enjoyed her time at the school where she taught infants, second and special education.

“I’ve absolutely loved it here. Great school and great colleagues — a lot of them re very good friends so we’ll stay in touch. The kids and the parents are great so it’s been a privilege to be here, but I’m ready to move on now while I feel young and energetic.”

Eibhlín still lives in her native Ballyferriter and said the only thing she won’t miss is the daily commute to Tralee.

Married to Dubliner Mick Davis, they have three children, Faolán, Oscar and Finn. Eibhlín has loads of plans for retirement involving her hobbies including cycling, hill-walking and travelling. We wish her well in her retirement.

Going To The Wells To Create Exhibition At Siamsa Tíre Next Month

.
‘Well, Well, Well?’ opens at Siamsa Tíre in October. Photo by Pauline Dennigan.

A NEW contemporary artwork series, inspired by four of Ireland’s premier holy well sites — Lady’s Well, Rockspring and Tubrid Well, Millstreet in County Cork and St Michael’s Well, Lixnaw and Tobar na Molt, Ardfert in County Kerry — will be exhibited in Siamsa Tire next month.

Artist Marie Brett and blogger/author Amanda Clarke have partnered with a diverse community of holy well custodians, farmers, healers, historians, folklorists, scholars and interested neighbours in creating ‘Well, Well, Well?’ a body of artwork celebrating the role holy wells play in modern-day health and wellbeing.

The artwork spans dance, music, song, photography, print and film and will be premiered at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee, opening on October 3rd with Emmy award-winning poet Alan Cooke, and famed traditional singer, Sonny Egan.

Continued below…

.

The artwork tells the story of a local lad who visits a holy well in curiosity and encounters its guardian.

Accompanied and guided across three sites, he makes votive offerings, enters into the water and receives elemental healing. He returns fundamentally changed.

The work explores wellbeing, and questions how individuals, communities and governments are meeting contemporary healthcare needs.

The series combines factual community experiences of healing water and earth energy, with reimagined folklore and traditional customs.

The free exhibition will run from October 3 to October 30.

Kerry FC Welcome The Champions To Mounthawk This Friday

.

Ivan Hurley previews Friday night’s game at Mounthawk between champions Cork City and Kerry FC…

With the destination of the title decided, it’s easy to know the countdown to the end of the season is fast approaching.

Cork City, who were crowned SSE Airtricity First Division Champions last Friday night are the visitors to Mounthawk Park on Friday night on Matchday 31 (kick-off 7.45pm).

Cork City, who were well deserving of the league title, will pose a difficult opponent to Kerry FC on Friday night.

With just one loss on their way to victory, it has been a dominant display by the Leesider’s in the division and have earned themselves a direct call up back to Premier Division football at the first time of asking.

Continued below…

.

Kerry will be looking to add further points to the table in the club’s just second ever campaign in the League of Ireland. A disappointing defeat to UCD the last time out in Tralee was backed up by last gasp draw away to Treaty United last Friday night.

Fans and players alike will know a Kerry FC victory was deserved in that game. Kerry dominated possession for 100 minutes but a last-gasp goal earned the Limerick outfit a share of the spoils.

But Kerry FC can bring some confidence into this game in Mounthawk Park tomorrow night. The last time Cork came to town an early penalty was all that separated the two sides in Tralee.

Kerry had a number of chances throughout the game and on another occasion could have earned at least a point against the would be champions.

So the scene is set for the visit of Cork City to Mounthawk Park tomorrow evening. With a good weather forecast and strong ticket sales, this is sure to be a game not to be missed.

Kerry’s sole signing of the summer transfer window has come from our Cork neighbours. Oran Crowe signed for the Kingdom from Cork City just a couple of weeks ago and has made two appearances in the Kerry green to date.

Speaking to the media earlier this week, First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy issued no fresh injury concerns ahead of the game against Cork City.

Oran Crowe did require stitches after getting an elbow to the face against Treaty United last time out but he should be fit and ready by kick off.

Recent absentee’s Antonio Tuta, Andy Spain and Valerii Dolia have all minutes back under their belts and remain available.

“We are looking forward to it. It’s an exciting game for us to play,” said Conor. “They’ve signed some very good players during the window so it’s a brilliant test and challenge for us to play against a team like that. So like that myself, the players, the club as a whole are looking forward to it 100%”.

Jer’s Living Life Without Limits As He Supports Enable Ireland Campaign

.
Jer O’Connor from Lixnaw, who is living with Friedrich’s ataxia, achieved a scuba diving qualification in the Red Sea.

A LIXNAW man is encouraging the public to get behind Enable Ireland’s Life With No Limits Campaign this month.

Jer O’Connor from Lixnaw is one of Enable Ireland’s 2024 Life With No Limits Champions.

Jer attends Enable Ireland Adult Service in Tralee. At the age of 18, he was diagnosed with Friedrich’s ataxia (FRIDA), a genetic, progressive movement disorder.

Continued below…

.

Since then he has embarked on some incredible physical adventures which have seen him soar through the sky (he’s jumped out of a plane – twice) and dive to great depths in the ocean, despite having had a life-long fear of water.

“When I was young, I was terrified of the water,” said Jer.  “I remember going to Ballybunion Beach with my family. Even trying to dip my toes in the water gave me motion sickness.”

“After I was diagnosed, I spent a long time putting off certain things. However, I realised that my condition was getting worse and that my time was becoming limited to do the things I wanted to do in life.

I wanted to try and conquer my fears and not let anything hold me back. I told Conagh, my key worker at Enable Ireland services in Kerry, about my phobia of water.

Continued below…

.

“She introduced me to Kerry Passion of Diving by taking me to one of their open days. They are a voluntary organisation that specialises in making scuba diving accessible to everyone. That’s when I decided I wanted to overcome my fear and achieve a diving certification.

My first day of training with Passion of Diving was at the Aqua Dome. I was so afraid. But the team there are amazing. They didn’t force me to do anything I didn’t want to.

“I was slowly introduced to the water and got familiar with the equipment. Passion of Diving were very methodical and good at slowly building your confidence. Now I trust them with my life. However, back then, my fear was getting the better of me.

But on the third day, something clicked in me. I realised that I was in no danger. I was surrounded by scuba diving instructors who would quickly pull me up if anything went wrong. I found that the fears which were limiting me were all in my head.

“It was so freeing to have conquered my fears and be able to dive. I don’t feel disabled when I am under the water. It’s like my disability fades away.

To achieve the practical part of my qualification, I was fortunate to take a trip to Egypt and go diving in the Red Sea. We went for a week and spent four days diving. 20 people of mixed abilities went from Passion of Diving and they are the some of the best people I’ve met in my life.”

It was a scary transition going from a still pool to the open sea where you can be thrown around by the waves. However, having my friends from Passion of Diving around me boosted my confidence.

I reminded myself of my training and I was able to push those fears aside. The diving was stunning. Being among the corals, the fish and the different sea life was beautiful.”

“I would love to get more people with a disability interested in scuba diving, simply for the freeing feeling it gives you. I’ve learnt it’s important to be open to new opportunities in life and to not let fears or self-doubts restrict you.

As well as scuba diving, I try to go skydiving at least once a year. There’s a great sense of exhilaration and freedom to do something where your disability is not a factor.

When the parachute opens you get to see the world from a different perspective. It’s made me realise how small my problems are. I’m very proud of myself for taking on these challenges.”

Enable Ireland’s ‘Life With No Limits’ campaign takes place during September each year.

It provides a platform for children and adults with disabilities who use Enable Ireland services to share their life experiences.  The campaign also aims to raise much-needed funds to support the charity’s work.

Every year, Enable Ireland needs over €2 million in additional funding to meet the costs of delivering their services.

Support the ‘Enable Ireland Life With No Limits’ campaign this September by making a purchase in one of their charity shops or donating online at www.enableireland.ie.

The public can also support Enable Ireland by giving to volunteers collecting for the charity throughout the month.

Or drop a bag of quality pre-loved items into their local Enable Ireland shop or clothing bank or into any TK Maxx store nationwide as part of their Give Up Clothes For Good campaign.

THE official opening of a new service for Na Gaeil took place last Sunday.  ‘Na Gaeil Abrew’ is their new coffee dock situated on its grounds in Killeen.

The project was realised thanks to the huge support and sponsorship from the people of Na Gaeil and has been going from strength to strength since opening its hatch in July this year.

The official opening began with a special blessing by Fr James Walsh followed by some proud words from chairperson of Na Gaeil, Conor Kavanagh.

Kerry players Diarmuid O’Connor and Damien Bourke cut the ribbon and declared Na Gaeil Abrew officially open much to the delight of present and past members of Na Gaeil who gathered to celebrate this special occasion.

Musicians Maura Begley, Mary Conroy, Nicholas Long and Philip and Avril Doyle treated the crowds to some heartwarming Irish music before Helen Tansley finally let them in on the amusing tale of Na Gaeil Abrew.

Na Gaeil Abrew has become much more than the selling of tea and coffee. It is a social outlet, a place to chill out, to catch up with friends at half time, a place to take the weight off your feet, listen to a bit of music, have a bit of banter with fellow members and people from different clubs, such simple concepts and yet so vital within a GAA club setting.

“I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this initiative which has brought out the absolute best in our club and its members,” said Helen.

“Na Gaeil Abrew is such an integral part of our club now and has created a very special sense of community spirit and belonging.  We are blessed to have such a wonderful team of people behind this venture to ensure its smooth running at every game since its opening.” Scroll down for photos…

Siamsa Tíre Performers Head To USA For Big E Festival

.
Siamsa Tíre performers in rehearsals prior to the US trip.

TEN Siamsa Tíre community cast performers take flight today, travelling to the U.S.A to perform at the annual Big E Festival in Springfield, West Massachusetts.

They have been in rehearsals for the last few weeks in preparation for this exciting opportunity to perform for over 250,000 visitors on the opening weekend.

The festival runs from the  September 13th – 29th, attracting over 1.4 million visitors across the week. In addition to the one hour performances daily from the 13th – 15th, the performers will provide Munnix Dance workshops to showcase and pass on this traditional dance to American visitors over the course of the weekend.

Continued below…

.

The opportunity was made possible following a Siamsa Tíre performance representing life on the Blasket Islands at the anniversary celebrations of the Blasket Centre last year and through connections between the Dingle Peninsula and Springfield and its sister city West Springfield (location of the Big E).

Natives of the Dingle Peninsula emigrated to Springfield throughout the early 1900’s, as did inhabitants of the Great Blasket Island, and the connection has continued with Dingle based producers selling their products at the Big E fair since the year 2000.

The performance opportunity was developed through Jamie Ó Flannúra (a Siamsa Tire performer and Dingle native), who has travelled to the Big E Fair for the past two years promoting the Dingle Peninsula.

He initiated discussions for Siamsa Tíre to perform on this international stage, showcasing the iconic traditional Munnix style of Irish dance, Irish music and song and all that Siamsa Tíre has to offer as a vibrant Theatre and Arts Centre in the heart of Kerry.

Three of the performers are west Kerry natives and the rest hail from Tralee, Killarney and across the county.

This follows a long history of Siamsa Tíre performers touring internationally, with performances representing Ireland across Europe, United States and further afield.

Pres Students Learn About Think Before You Flush Campaign In Banna

.
Students of Presentation Secondary School Tralee learning about the Think Before You Flush campaign on Banna Beach on Monday.

THINK Before You Flush, a campaign operated by Clean Coasts in partnership with Uisce Éireann, joined Presentation Secondary School, Tralee students on Banna Beach on Monday to discuss the environmental issue of sewage-related litter.

Think Before You Flush aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of flushing sanitary products and other damaging items down the toilet and to promote responsible waste management practices.

The campaign has asked the students to help spread the Think Before You Flush message throughout their community.

Continued below…

.

The students of Presentation Secondary School Tralee also learnt about the Think Before You Pour campaign that looks at the issue of pouring fats, oils, and greases (FOGs) from cooking down the kitchen sink.

Students and staff of Presentation Secondary School Tralee learnt about the Think Before You Flush campaign on Banna Beach on Monday.

Instead of flowing freely, FOGs cool and harden as they travel along the wastewater network. When FOGs combine with sewage related litter fatbergs can form.

Uisce Éireann clears thousands of blockages, including fatbergs, from the wastewater and sewage networks every year. The Think Before Pour campaign urges everyone to avoid washing FOGs down the kitchen drain and, instead, dispose of them in the bin once cool.

The Think Before You Flush campaign emphasises the importance of appropriate flushing behaviour and disposal of items including wipes and other sanitary products in the bin, even if they are labelled as flushable.

Join the campaign on social media @CleanCoasts and at www.cleancoasts.org. Learn more about the Think Before You Flush campaign at https://thinkbeforeyouflush.org/

Monika’s ‘Over The Moon’ After Winning World Title Again

.
Monika Dukarska.

KILLORGLIN-BASED rower Monika Dukarska, a PhD researcher at Munster Technological University, expressed her delight at winning the gold medal at the World Coastal Rowing Championships, which took place last weekend in Genoa, Italy.

Racing in the Coastal Women’s Solo final, Monika clinched the top spot with a time of 20:39.51.

The 34-year-old said she is “over the moon” to win the title for a second year in a row. It is her fifth world championship gold and ninth medal overall since she began coastal rowing in 2008.

Continued below…

.

Speaking following her victory, Monika said, “This year’s championship was particularly unpredictable and challenging, with the location and weather playing a major role. My heat on Saturday was incredibly tough. The waves were large, making it difficult to control the boat. I anticipated slightly better conditions for the final, but I knew I’d have to work hard to battle the waves, especially with the course consisting of eight turning points.”

During the race, Monika found herself in second place, working hard to close the gap with Dymchenko of Azerbaijan, who led. Midway through the race, Dymchenko incorrectly rounded one of the buoys, which led to her automatic disqualification.

Until Monika reached the beach, she thought she had finished second and was content with that given the challenges of balancing her PhD, work, and training over the last year.

She said; “When I reached the beach, everyone was congratulating me, telling me I’d won. I was absolutely thrilled!

She added; “Coastal rowing is all about navigating an open sea course, where you face whatever challenges Mother Nature throws at you. That’s my favourite part of this sport—the combination of physical effort, mental toughness, bravery, stamina, course knowledge, and the strategic thinking required to succeed. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported and enabled me to compete and defend my title. It’s truly a team effort.”

The overwhelming success of the event has led to the possibility that the Tour de France official L’Étape Grand Depart could come to Ireland in the coming years.

When looking to bring LÉtape by Tour de France to Ireland, official Tour de France scouts singled out Killarney for its similar terrain to the Grand Depart, and approached Killorglin based Elite Events Management to manage and host the event.

AN enthusiastic bunch of new runners turned up in the Brandon Car Park on Monday evening to start a journey which will see them run a 5k in two months time.

The Born To Run Marathon Club started its Couch To 5k Programme which will run for the next nine weeks and over 40 people signed up to challenge themselves.

The programme is a great way to get or stay active as the autumn evenings are upon us, while the social aspect can’t be under understated.

There were plenty seasoned Born To Run Club members there to help the newcomers who are in for a fun time over the coming weeks. Scroll down for photos…

Senior Men

The Kerry Petroleum Junior Premier Championship Semi Final
Ballymacelligott  1-21
Firies 1-21

Firies 4 g Ballymac 2 G after penalties .

Losing a Championship semi-final is hard, and losing on penalties makes it even more difficult. Ballymac and Firies played a thrilling game of open football in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. The match was a roller-coaster of emotions, with both teams giving their all. Sadly, Ballymac lost on penalties, adding to the drama of the game.

Despite the loss, Ballymac’s resilience and determination were evident throughout the game.  Ballymac led by two points, 1-10 to 0-8, at halftime, playing against the wind. Both teams were level at full-time 1-16 each at full time. It was 1-19 each at half time in extra time and 1-21 each at full time after extra time.

This game had everything open football: two great goals and two saves by both keepers, which kept their teams in the game. Ballymac hit the crossbar twice… it was tit for tat right to the end. Ballymac were down to 14 for ten minutes at the end of the second half of full time.

They showed great grit and determination to stay in the game.  Both veterans Aidan Breen and Daniel O’Shea were colossal for Ballymac. They led by example and never let off.

The teams were separated by penalties when Firies scored four goals and Ballymac 2 goals. It was a heartbreaking loss for Ballymac, but their performance was commendable.

We are deeply appreciative of all the squad players, the management team, and their commitment to Ballymac GAA.

This includes training on cold, wet nights, training on other pitches, and travelling to training and games. The personal sacrifices made by the players – nights away from home, missed social events, and the physical toll of tough games and injuries, you have shown remarkable resilience and commitment.

We are also inspired by the dedication of the personnel behind the scenes for their sacrifices all year. We are grateful to each and every one of you.

We are also grateful to our supporters for all their support throughout the year. Your support has been marvellous in numerous ways, and it was particularly heartening to hear such vocal support from both the young and old fans at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. Your passionate cheering added an extra layer of excitement to the game

Senior Ladies

Bons Secours County Junior Premier Championship

Round 3

Inbhear Scéine Gaels v Ballymacelligott

On what was a lovely evening for football, our Ladies played a lovely brand of football to take home all three points and a victory from our long journey to Kenmare.

However our first half performance was a continuation of the second half from Fossa, where we dominated play went one point up from Roisin Rahilly, but failed to score for another 20 minutes, despite continuing to dominate play.

In the next 7 minutes though we turned the screw with points from Sarah Scanlon, Kate Collins (2) and Roisin Rahilly again.

Our defence was very strong in those 20 minutes where we turned over ISG numerous times and denied them any real sight on goal and we led 0-5 to 0-3 at half time.

We started the second half with quick points from Lisa Curran(2) and Kate Collins third of the evening.

This had us up by 0-8 to 0-3 with just six minutes gone and a commanding lead that was never to be lost. In fact we went onto score another 1-5, the goal coming from a penalty by Sarah Scanlon to just 0-3 from ISG.

Squad was as follows,

Robyn White, Kerry Hennessy, Grainne Galvin, Anna Collins, Emily O’Brien, Una Morrissey, Jaime Lee O’Connor, Ashling O’Connell, Roisin Rahilly (0-3), Eve Creedon, Sarah Scanlon (1-1), Rachel Creedon, Kate Collins (0-5), Rachel Griffin (0-1), Lisa Curran (0-2), Ella Quirke, Emma Daly (0-1), Aoibhinn Broderick, Clare Kenny, Kate O’Connor, Tina Quinn, Aoife Galvin, Ellie McElliogott, Caoimhe Carroll, Emma Leen, Keelin Enright, Laura Kelly, Ciara Kerins.

This result now gives us a home quarter final v Spa of Killarney on September 15th, at a venue and time to be confirmed. #ballymacabu

The Brendan Martin Cup visits the schools of Ballymac

On Monday morning 2nd September, all the schools of the parish welcomed a special visitor – our very our Kerry Senior Lady Róisín Rahilly who brought with her a trophy that hasn’t been around our parts for 31 years, the Brendan Martin cup.

The kids were delighted to have an opportunity to hold the trophy and ask some very tough questions to Róisín about her toughest opponents, how she trained when she was younger and what it was like when the final whistle blew when Kerry won the All Ireland.

Thank you to all the students and staff of Clogher, O’Brennan, Flemby and Nuachabháil schools for the wonderful welcome, and to Róisín for being such a wonderful ambassador for the Club and Community.

U12 girls

The U.12 girls played their final phase 2 Go Game on Thursday evening at home to Laune Rangers.

Great to see the girls in great spirits as always, after fine performances all round.

St Kierans Minors

Best of luck to our minors tomorrow night with St Kierans when they play Austin Stacks in the final of the Keane’s Super Valu Minor County Championship in Austin Stacks Park at 7pm

Academy

A hard first week of school and preschool didn’t stop our U5s squad showing up with loads of energy for Academy this week.

They had a brilliant time playing a match with coaches Stephen, Larry and John, practicing their soloing and scoring with coach Paudie and assistant coach Tommy, and working on fundamental movement, gross motor and basic skills development with coach Cat.

It’s wonderful to see the confidence in our youngest players grow each week. Keep up the practice at home!

Our Academy training will be in the training pitch at 11am every Sunday see you there

.

Under 9 Boys

U9 boys Well done to our u9 boys who competed in The Tralee Town Blitz this Sunday in Na Gaeil. A Brilliant day was had by all. Thanks to Na Gaeil for hosting and a special mention to Brian o Mahoney who organised the day. Well done all.

.

U15 D5 Central Region

Champions!!

Ballymac 4-6

Ardfert 2-10

From 5 points down at halftime to win by 2, our boys showed great character and skill to come away with the spoils of victory.

Both Shane Cassidy and Harvey Leen raised green flags in the 1st half, on very limited supply.

2nd half, with the wind behind us, we pushed on.

Points from Eric Quirke (2) , Adrian OConnor, Patrick Leen, and an impressive 1-2 from Tadhg OConnor put us right back in the game. Harvey sent a rocket low to the corner of the net for his 2nd of the night.

A tense final couple of minutes was spent repelling Ardferts attacks, with both Gearoid Joy and Gearoid OConnor immense.

Cathal Carr accepted the trophy on behalf of his team and on the day of his birthday too!

Well done to all our panel of players, including our 6 u13s, who played big parts when called upon, throughout the campaign.

U13 boys

Our U13 blue came out on top in Div 8 of Central Region on Sunday 1st Sept. They played Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane in Milltown/Castlemaine. The boys played with great grit and determination and were always in control of the game. The final score was Ballymac 2-7 to 1-1.

Thanks to the parents of u13 and u11 players for all the support this year. Well done boys on a great win!

Kerry Homecoming Festival To Entice Diaspora To Come Home In October

.

THE Kerry Homecoming Festival at Halloween is a county-wide initiative to bring home our Kerry Diaspora during the month of October this year.

It is presented by Kerry County Council as part of the Global Irish Festival Series, which is a joint initiative between Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Kerry Homecoming Festival is a call home from all aspects of Kerry business, tourism, sports and cultural organisations to come and enjoy close to 50 events and activities such as Samhain spectacles, storytelling, Jack-o-Lantern carving, genealogy workshops and heritage talks, star-gazing, a celebration of the centenary of the closing of the Lartigue Monorail, an American Wake at Kerry Writers Museum and much, much more.

Continued below…

.

The legendary Cailleach (Hag / Witch), will be the centerpiece of a thrilling Samhain spectacle in Listowel, Dingle, Kenmare and Tralee.

The Cailleach is the goddess of the winter months. Her season begins on Samhain (the origin of Halloween), October 31st, when the Goddess Brigid hands her staff over.

In Kerry she has given her name to the Hag’s Glen in the MacGilliycuddy’s Reeks mountains where the Hag of Corrán Tuathail (Carrauntoohill) plunged to her death in the lake known as Hag’s Lake.

The Samhain Spectacles will be supported by a series of family friendly workshops in 16 towns and villages, in the run up, led by Juli Ní Mhaoileoin, the Dingle Druid, in which people of all ages will learn how to make traditional Samhain masks and Jack-o-Lanterns and they in turn can take part in the spectacles wearing their masks or bearing their lanterns.

Genealogy and family research feature heavily in the programme with talks and workshops being presented by experts Kay Caball in the Killarney and Tralee libraries and Tom Dillon in Castleisland and Killorglin.

Kerry’s tradition of storytelling, particularly of the otherworldly kind at Halloween is also honoured through a number of storytelling sessions from Seán Ó’Laoghaire, Niall de Búrca and Tom Dillon throughout the county.

The programme also features the Global Gaelic Games Social Festival, in Killarney on October 18th and 19th.

This celebration will bring together Gaelic Football enthusiasts from all corners of the globe to take part in non-competitive 9-a-side Gaelic games that emphasise inclusiveness and integration.

All of the existing seasonal Kerry festivals and some new ones, including and Féile Eile in Killorglin will also be joining in the fun – Kenmare Halloween Howl, the Patrick O’Keeffe Music Festival in Castleisland, the Skellig Coast Archaeology Festival the Kerry International Film Festival celebrating its 25th anniversary and Oireachtas na Samhna, both taking place in Killarney, as well as Tralee’s annual National Circus Festival and The Tralee Half Marathon.

The Homecoming Festival provides a unique opportunity to deepen our linkages with the Kerry Diaspora, Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Breandán MacGearailt stated.

“Despite being a small country on the edge of Europe, on the edge of the Atlantic, we have, over many generations developed a global network of Irish-diaspora, who are embedded into business, culture and society across the world. This is our way of welcoming our first, second, third and fourth generation of Irish back home, and showing them our culture and history.”

Programme details are available on the Discover Kerry website www.discoverkerry.com/live/homecomingfestival/
