Na Gaeil’s Darragh Carmody in action against An Ghaeltacht in the Intermediate Championship in Killeen on Sunday.
Seniors Na Gaeil welcomed An Ghaeltacht to Killeen on Sunday for their final group game of the Intermediate Championship knowing that victory would guarantee them a home quarter final draw.
The heavy rain during the morning made the underfoot conditions very slippery, but it did peter out early in the game and the wind died down completely. Diarmuid O’Connor won the throw in and careered down the middle of An Ghaeltacht rearguard to fire over the crossbar after 12 seconds of play.
Minutes later the same player pointed a 30 metre for a foul on Jamie Lowham. Eanna O‘Conchúir restored parity for An Ghaeltacht with two good points in the sixth and tenth minute.
Na Gaeil full forward Jamie Lowham, who had the better of his opposite number all day slotted over a point in the 16th minute to leave the home side one point ahead at the first water break, on a score line of Na Gaeil: 0-03; An Ghaeltacht: 0-02.
It was all Na Gaeil in the second quarter. Both sets of backs were playing very defensively so scores were hard to come by. Jack Barry was fouled going through in the 25th minute and scored the resultant free himself from an acute angle 30 metres out on the right wing.
Goalkeeper Devon Burns pointed a 45 metre free four minutes later and Diarmuid O’Connor slotted over his second point on the stroke of half time to leave the Killeen side ahead by 4. Na Gaeil: 06; An Ghaeltacht: 0-02.
Na Gaeil had a good start to the 2nd half with Diarmuid O’Connor again rising highest to win the throw in and surging forward. The ball made its way to Jamie Lowham who booted it over the crossbar after 26 seconds of play. Midfielder Jack Barry followed up with another good effort, this time with his right foot to push the gap out to six points.
But An Ghaeltacht responded with points from Pádraig Óigí O’Sé, Colm O’Muircheartaigh and Tomás O’Sé to narrow the gap to three points and make it a one score game. Diarmuid O’Connor replied with a point after good approach work by James O’Connor who was another Na Gaeil player that impressed on the day.
This score left Na Gaeil ahead once again by four points at the second water break on a score line of 0-09 to 0-05. Eanna O Conchúir who was An Ghaeltacht’s best player over the hour pointed two long range frees from the ground to narrow the gap to two once again.
With three minutes of normal time left Andrew Barry and Darragh Carmody registered points for the home side before Pádraig Óg O’Sé pulled one back for the West Kerry outfit. Darragh Carmody had the last say with a lovely point from 30 metres out to give Na Gaeil a four point winning margin at full time. Final Score: Na Gaeil 0-12; An Ghaeltacht: 0-08.
This win ensures a home quarter final tie for Na Gaeil which will probably take place in a fortnight’s time. It was a very controlled performance by the Killeen side with their defence on top over the hour.
James O’Connor put in a great shift around the half back line. Diarmuid and Jack controlled midfield and up front Jamie Lowham and Jack Bourke caused a lot of problems for An Ghaeltacht’s full back line. U11 Our U11 Boys headed to Abbeyfeale on Sunday evening to take on the home side Fr. Casey’s. With over 30 players they fielded three teams against a strong Abbeyfeale outfit. We extend our thanks to Fr. Casey’s for hosting us.
Sympathy We extend our sincere sympathy to the Crowley family Racecourse Lawn on the very sad passing of Michael in early August. Michael played under age football with Na Gaeil. May he rest in peace. We also offer our sincere sympathy to the Sheahan family on the sad passing of Dónal Sheahan, Killarney.
