A BALLYHEIGUE man out sea fishing in Australia got a whole lot more than he bargained for when he caught a great white Shark last Saturday.
Ciaran Casey, who has been living down under with his family since 2013, was fishing on Golden Beach in Victoria when hooked the endangered man-eater.
He was out looking for bronze whaler sharks and was left amazed when he caught the 6 foot monster. Ciaran, a catch and release fisherman, overall it took him an hour to reel the juvenile great white to shore.
Ciaran was fishing for bronze whaler sharks but due to the seaweed he didn’t know it was a white shark until he went to pull it out of the water.
Ciaran’s wife was also on the scene, she snapped photos of the huge catch.
It’s illegal to catch and kill great whites in Australia as they are an endangered species. The Ballyheigue man released the shark by unhooking the line from its mouth and sending it back into the waters of the Tasman sea.
