IT was an fantastic, pink-filled night of fun, laughter and no small amount of pain last night in McElligott’s Bar, Ardfert night for a special fundraiser which raised €5,000 over the past week.
The Ardfert community came together to support mother of two, Andrea Hogan (36), recently diagnosed with breast cancer, who was donating her long locks to the Rapunzel foundation which makes wigs for those suffering from permanent hair loss.
Although Andrea, who is starting her treatment to battle the disease next week, had her hair cut on Friday morning by Breeda O’Halloran from Ballyheigue, she did get her hair shaved on the night in front of the packed bar.
“Andrea was thrilled with the night,” said one of the organisers, Brenda O’Connor, who couldn’t believe how much was raised for the the Breast Cancer Care Unit in Cork University Hospital.
“When we started organising it on Monday we thought we might raise between €600 and €1,000. But by Friday evening we had nearly €1,000 and we raised €4,000 on the night,” she said.
“It was a bit sad when Andrea was getting her head shaved, but then everyone started to get into it and by the end of the night there were loads of people of all ages going around with shaved legs and half heads of hair!” said Brenda.
The theme for the night was pink and many of those present adhered to the dress code…even some of the men.
There was also a lot of grimacing by some of the men present who got a taste of what women go through when they have a waxing.
There was food, music and great spot prizes on a night that raised so much money for a fantastic cause.
