SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-12; Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-14.

We had a good start to this round 9 Co. League game played in ideal conditions in Connolly Park on yesterday afternoon (23rd July) and were two points up inside the 3rd minute with David Mannix and Pa McCarthy on target. By the 10th minute the visitors had leveled matters, but the scores that really put this game to bed came in the space of the next two minutes – two quick goals for the opposition. They went on then to score six more points before the break .

A pointed free by David Mannix in the 25th minute and a brilliant goal by Darragh O’Brien in added time gave us some chance but it still left the Mid Kerry boys ahead at half time by double scores (2-8 to 1-4).

We tried our very best in the second half , outscoring the visitors by 0-8 to 0-6, but those crucial first-half goals by the visitors were the difference in the end. Seven of those eight second-half points came from David Mannix – five from frees – with the other point coming from play by Darragh O’Brien. It was good to see Cathal O’Reilly making his Senior debut, coming on as a sub late in the game.

The result still leaves us second from bottom with only two more rounds of the League to be played.  The first on these is fixed for the weekend of 13th August – a home game against An Ghaeltacht,  and the final round (w/e of 24th Sept) is an away game against Rathmore. Both teams currently lie in 2nd and 3rd spots on the League table.

Team: David Hennessy, Colin Griffin, Jack O’Shea, Denis Costello, Pa McCarthy (0-2), Seán Ryan, Darragh Scanlon, Alan Duggan, Shane Guthrie, Fiachna Mangan, Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (0-1), Michael Collins, David Mannix (0-9 – six frees), Darragh O’Brien (1-0), Seán Dukes.

Subs used: Barry Walsh (10m), Paul Galvin (30m), John Murphy (45m), Theo Diggin (51m), Cathal O’Reilly (55m).

Blood subs used: Barry Walsh 5m – 8m), Theo Diggin (20m – 51m).

B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 2-10; Cromane 1-22.

Seven of our starting fifteen were making their first appearances of the season with the B team and six of those were from our Minor squad. And they put on a very good show against a Cromane side who are still very much in contention for promotion at the end of the season, in this high-scoring Co. League game in Connolly Park on this Saturday evening (22nd July).

The visitors opened the scoring after just nineteen seconds before a Donagh McKivergan free in the 7th minute equalized matters after a foul on Conor Lowe. Then, a minute later, we went ahead when Danny Carroll latched on to a breaking ball to finish to the net after good work by Donagh McKivergan and Brandon Patterson.

However the visitors settled well and in the next 15 minutes had put over eight unanswered points. Our third score came in the 23rdminute when Donagh McKivergan pointed from play, Then in the closing minutes of the half Donagh was on target again along with Cathal O’Reilly, but Cromane added a further four points which left them ahead by 0-13 to 1-4 at half time.

A minute after the resumption we got through for our  2nd goal when Darren Bastible finished Danny Carroll’s cross to the net but, within a minute Cromane had cancelled that out with their only goal of the game and then the Mid Kerry boys went on to score a further nine points to six for us – two each from Danny Carroll and Michael Linnane and one each by Craig Corcoran and Donagh McKivergan (free).

Team: Robbie Murphy, Shane Kelliher, Andrew Morrissey, Seán Tansley, Conor Lowe, Cathal O’Reilly (0-1), Odhran Liston, William Kirby, Craig Corcoran (0-1), Danny Carroll (1-2 – one free), Michael Linnane (0-2), Brandon Patterson, Cian Liston, Donagh McKivergan (0-4 – two frees), Darren Bastible (1-0).

Sub used: Micko Horan (42m).
