SENIOR FOOTBALL: East Kerry 3-13; Austin Stacks 3-7.

After the downpour for the double-header in Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening this double-header in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday afternoon (29th Sept) was played in almost perfect weather conditions.

Like Dingle last week East Kerry also had a very good start in this round 2B game and led by five points to no score after 22 minutes. Our first score, a pointed free from Darragh O’Brien after a foul on Kieran Donaghy, came in the 24th minute, followed almost immediately by a sixth East Kerry point to restore their five points lead.

Then in the closing three minutes of the half it was score for score with we first registering a goal and a point and then East Kerry doing likewise.

Our point came from a Seán Quilter free after he himself was fouled, and our goal came a minute later when Joseph O’Connor put,Michael O’Gara through for a beauty. This still left East Kerry with that five points lead at half time (1-7 to 1-2).

Twelve minutes into the second half that was still the margin between the two sides after both had scored three points each.

Our first two points came immediately after the interval with Darragh O’Brien putting over both, the first from a free after he himself was fouled and the second from play after being put through by Ronan Shanahan. Ronan, together with his brother Barry, had also a hand in the next score putting Shane O’Callaghan through for a well-taken point.

We then hit a purple patch in a three minute spell between the 44th and 47th minutes scoring two goals and a point to put us into the lead for the first time.

Ronan Shanahan again started this move, passed to Wayne Guthrie whose high ball into the square was tapped to net by Michael O’Gara – his second of the day, a fantastic achievement for a young man who was making his first Championship start (he made his debut the previous week when coming on as a sub back in Dingle).

This was quickly followed by a brilliant point from long distance by Seán Quilter after good work by the aforementioned Michael O’Gara and Michael O’Donnell. Dingle then put over their 4th point of the half to be followed immediately by our 3rd goal of the game. Kieran Donaghy won the ugly ball close in and found Michael O’Donnell who blasted to the net to put us in the lead for the first time (3-6 to 1-11).

But between then and full time we could only register one more point (a Seán Quilter free after Fiachna Mangan was fouled ) while East Kerry went on to score a further two goals (one from a penalty) and two points which left them with a six points winning margin at the end,

It didn’t help our cause, of course, to be without the services of Greg Horan or to lose team captain, Conor Jordan early in the second half through injury.

But no fault could be attributed to any of the 19 players who gave their all throughout the 66 minutes of play and had to give-way to a better East Kerry side on the day.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Jack O’Shea, Barry Shanahan, Dylan Casey, Jack Morgan, Conor Jordan (Capt), Ronan Shanahan, Wayne Guthrie, Joseph O’Connor, Michael O’Gara (2-0), Darragh O’Brien (0-3 – two frees), Michael O’Donnell (1-0), Seán Quilter (0-3 – two frees), Kieran Donaghy, Shane O’Callaghan (0-1).

Subs used: Ciarán O’Reilly (38m), Colin Griffin (40m), Fiachna Mangan (48m), Shane Carroll (57m).

Some people were saying after that our season is over, and that may come through eventually, but we can’t forget that we are the Club Champions and in the event of a Divisional side winning the County title then we would be participating in the Munster Club Championship.

Having said that many people will still find it hard to see how Dr. Crokes, for example, can be defeated as they are playing so well at present. Lets not forget also that we may yet find ourselves in a play-off position to reach the Div 1 Co. League final.

THE C TEAM: The Barrett Cup final between ourselves and Annascaul goes head in Caherslee on this Friday evening (4th Oct) at 7.30pm with extra time and a result on the day in operation. Best of luck to Aidan and the boys.

SCÓR: Scór is a GAA competition that combines all the colour and rivalry of Gaelic Games with the social/fun element of Ireland’s traditional past-times. The competition was established by the GAA in 1969 with the aim of promoting Ireland’s traditional pastimes and culture while offering club members the chance to meet up, have fun and represent their club during the winter months while Football and Hurling had ceased.
There are eight events/disciplines in Scór that cover all aspects of Irish culture: Figure/Céilí Dancing, Solo Singing, Ballad Group, Recitation/Scéalaíocht, Léiriú Stáitse/Stage Presentation, Instrumental Music, Set Dancing and Table Quiz. The competition is divided into two age levels, Scór na nÓg, for young people under 17 and Scór Sinsir, for those over 17
Just like the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championships, clubs taking part in Scór first run off competitions among the club’s own members with the winners going forward to Divisional/District Board stage where deemed necessary, and then on to the County Final. The winners go on to the Provincial final and finally on to the All-Ireland Final.
Austin Stacks invite any members who would be interested in getting involved in organising Austin Stacks Scór teams/groups in any discipline/age group to contact Club Secretary, Elma Nix on 086 1053300.
