SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-11; Killarney Legion 0-14.

For the second week in a row our Seniors, on this occasion, came from five points down to share the spoils after another dramatic finish in the penultimate round of the Co. League. It was tit for tat for most of the first half with both sides on six points each as we approached half time. Legion could have been further ahead at this stage but for some brilliant defensive displays by our lads, including some brilliant saves by Wayne Guthrie early on. Legion added two more points in succession in the closing stages of the half to give them that 0-8 to 0-6 lead at the break.

We were still playing second fiddle for most of the second half as we trailed by five points with five minutes of normal time remaining (0-9 to 0-14). But then came that dramatic finish. Darragh O’Brien pointed from a free and then goal-keeper, Wayne Guthrie came up field, as he regularly does, to point from play.  Then in the second minute of additional time we were awarded a 13m free and with what looked like the whole 15 Legion players lining the goals up stepped Darragh O’Brien to crash the ball to the roof of the net and end the game all square – one of the best free kicks ever seen in Connolly Park, or anywhere else for that matter.

Team: Wayne Guthrie (0-1), Niall Fitzmaurice, Barry Shanahan, Barry Walsh, Armin Heinrich, Ronan Shanahan (0-1), Adam Curran, Michael O’Donnell (Capt (0-1), Greg Horan (0-2), Michael O’Gara, Cian Purcell, Conor Horan (0-2), Darragh O’Brien (1-4 – one goal free and 3 points frees), Gearóid Fitzgerald, Shane O’Callaghan.

Subs used: Paul O’Sullivan (36m), David Mannix (46m), Eoghan Carroll (50m).

With one more round remaining we are now on top of the table on 15 points along with Dr. Crokes and Dingle. All three have away games in the final round of the competition. We travel to Spa Killarney with Crokes going to Kenmare and Dingle making the short journey to An Ghaeltacht.

B FOOTBALL: With one more round to go our B Team have a home game against Beale. Even if we win this game our Div. 4 status for next season will also depend on other results in these final round 11 games.  So fingers crossed that things might turn our way on the day.

THE C TEAM: We travel to Ballymac on this Saturday evening(2nd July) to play Listry B in the Co. League Shield Final. Throw in is at 7pm with extra time and result on the day if required. When the two sides met in the earlier round of the competition we were most unlucky to come up short by just one point  – the Mid Kerry boys winning by 2-10 to 2-9..

U21 FOOTBALL: As we write the first round of the Co. Championship against Rathmore is going ahead in Connolly Park. Check our Website for further information.

KERRY MINORS: Hard luck on the Kerry Minors, including our own Colm Browne, Paddy Lane and Michael Tansley who just came up short to Mayo in last Saturday’s (25th June) All Ireland semi final – the Connacht boys winning with two points to spare (1-8 to 0-9) at the end.

KERRY SENIORS: Well done to the Kerry Seniors on their good win in Croke Park on Sunday. Great to see Joe O’Connor making an appearance late in the game, making an immediate impression when he put Seán O’Shea through for his point, increasing Kerry’s lead to seven points at that stage.

BEST OF LUCK: to Éidín Dowling, daughter of Evelyn and Eddie (former Club Footballer) and granddaughter of Brendan (former Club Footballer and the Club’s current President), who is representing Ireland this week in Nottingham in the ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships. The competition which started last Sunday concludes on this coming Saturday (2nd July).

CLUB CARDS: Our Card sessions continue in the Clubhouse on Monday and Thursday nights with the starting time at 9pm sharp.

All at the Cards extend sincere sympathy to Sheila Healy and her husband Phil on the death of Sheila’s brother, Fr. Moss O’Connell, who passed away in England recently. Fr. Moss was an outstanding footballer in his youth, winning an All Ireland SF medal with Kerry in 1959. He would have won a lot more but his priestly duties took him to England where he spent the rest of his life. Coming home on his annual holidays he never missed joining our Card sessions and was a very welcome player right up to the very end.
