THE LATE MICHEÁL HAYES: Even though he had been ill for some time the news of the death of Micheál Hayes on this Wednesday evening (13th July) was received with great sadness.

He was regarded by many as the man who was responsible for laying the foundation of the Club’s Second Golden Era from 1973 to 1994. The Club’s first Golden Era began in1928 and ended nine seasons later when we won our 5th SF Co. Championship victory in 1936.

The period between then and 1973 was regarded as the Club’s ‘barren period’. Many blame the financial and political conditions of that time as a contributing factor for this barren period, with emigration and recessions taking place from 1939 onwards following the start of World War 2.When Mícheál arrived back in Tralee in 1961as a Teacher at the Tralee CBS Primary School he got involved immediately with our youth teams. Along with people such as James Hobbert, Jack Parker, Joe Mulchinock, Paddy Drummond, Dan Ryan, Jackie Power and Michael Chuchy O’Connell, to name but a few, he launched a Youth Policy which he referred to as ‘The Ten Year Plan’.

Young players from seven years upwards were tutored by him and they immediately began to win trophies at Juvenile level, culminating in the Club’s first MF Co. Championship title in 1969.

Four years later that ‘Ten Year Plan’ resulted in the start of our Second Golden Era during which we won a further five Co. SF Championships between 1973 and 1986 with an 11th title coming eight years later in 1994. That Second Golden Era was the result of what Mícheál Hayes and his colleagues started away back in 1961.

Sincere sympathy to Maura, Brendan, Orla, Ultan, Vincent and Deirdre and to all Micheál’s extended family and friends.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently: Micheál Hayes, Monavally and formerly Oakview (see tribute); Mariusz Klepachi, Bridge Street and formerly Castleisland and Warsaw; Declan O’Sullivan, Cloondara, Oakpark and formerly Glasheen Road, Cork; Seán Fitzgerald, Drogheda and formerly Brewery Road; and Kay (Catherine) McDonnell (nee Byrne), Clogherbrien and formerly Kilflynn and Zimbabwe; Richard Bono; and Emma Fitzgerald (nee Corkery), Ballinorig and formerly Ballyvelly and Ballyduff.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Dingle 1-16; Austin Stacks 1-13.

When both sides met in the earlier round of the competition (round 5 on 1st May) the game ended in a draw (2-12 to 1-15) but in this semi final encounter played in Annascaul on this Saturday evening (16th July) Dingle (the current Co. League holders) were never behind in a closely contested game.
They got off to the perfect start scoring four points without reply inside the first six minutes. Our first score came in the eight minute from a David Mannix free and David added two more from the spot by the 18thminutes. Our four remaining points of the half came from play with Shane O’Callaghan, Armin Heinrich, Conor Horan and team captain, Michael O’Donnell on target. This left Dingle ahead by three at half time ( 0-10 to 0-7).

And that was still the difference between the sides at full time when both sides scored 1-6 each. Michael O’Donnell’s goal inside the 2nd minute of the second half  gave us agreat start but Dingle never gave up and kept that three points lead right up to the end. Our remaining six points of the half came from six different players – Michael O’Donnell, Conor Horan, David Mannix (free), Jordan Kissane, Calvin Foley and Darragh O’Brien. Afterwards, Michael O’Donnell deservedly received the Celsius Menswear Man of the Match award

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Colin Griffin, Barry Shanahan, Eoghan Carroll, Armin Heinrich (0-1), Ronan Shanahan, Adam Curran, Michael O’Donnell (Capt) (1-2), Michael O’Gara, Conor Horan (0-2), David Mannix (0-4 frees), Jordan Kissane (0-1), Calvin  Foley (0-1), Gearóid Fitzgerald, Shane O’Callaghan (0-1).

Dingle will now play Dr. Crokes in the Co. League final while we look forward to the first round of the Club Championship with eight teams divided into two groups of 4. Dingle, Kenmare, Na Gaeil and Spa are in Group A, while ourselves, Dr. Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys and Templenoe are in Group B.

In the opening round, which at the moment if fixed for Sunday fortnight (7th August) at 1pm we play Templenoe in the Legion pitch at Derreen. In round 2 we have a home game against Kerins O’Rahillys and in the third and final round we are away to Dr. Crokes. No date fixed as we write for those two last rounds.

B FOOTBALL: Our two opening rounds in this season’s Tralee/St. Brendans League against Ballymac and John Mitchels were postponed with the games still to be refixed as we write. Our round 3 game against Kerins O’Rahillys was due to be played on this Tuesday evening (19th July). Check Club Website for details.

THE C TEAM: St. Pats 2-11; Austin Stacks 0-10.

After going down to Churchill in the opening round of the Tralee/St. Brendan’s League last week our boys put up a far better show in Blennerville on last Tuesday evening (12th July) but still had to give way to a stronger St. Pats side. When Pats goaled after just 36 seconds we recovered well and had drawn level by the 21st minute (0-6 to 1-3) with five different scorers – Dara Moriarty with our opening score and points each by Jimmy Charles, Conor Lowe and Daniel O’Rourke with two by Caden O’Mahony. However, Pats added a goal and two points in the closing minutes of the half to give them a five points lead at half time (2-5 to 0-6).

The home side outscored us again in the second half by six points to four – our four points coming from Dara Moriarty, Caden O’Mahony (free), Jimmy Charles and Joey Kinsella.

It was great to see four players making their first appearances of the season and they showed that they have lost nothing since they last lined out with the Club – Joey O’Shea, Joey Kinsella, Cathal O’Reilly and Brian O’Sullivan.

Team: Seamus Bastible, Craig Teahan, Shane Greensmyth, Joey O’Shea, Gearóid Kilgallen, Conor Lowe (0-1), Jack Doyle, Billy Stack, Greg Scanlon, Dean Scanlon (Capt), Caden O’Mahony (0-3 – one free), Daniel O’Rourke (0-1), Dara Moriarty (0-2), Joey Kinsella (0-1), James Charles (0-2).

Subs used: Cathal O’Reilly (ht), Brian O’Sullivan (47m), Pádraig Breen (50m).

The 3rd and final round at home to Ardfert was due to played on this Tuesday (19th July) See Club Website for details..
