THE fourth class pupils at St Brendan’s NS in Blennerville have put together an impressive project on the birds of Blennerville.

The Greenschool committee in Ms Olivia O’Shea’s 4th class are in their 2nd year of the Biodiversity flag programme.

The children went bird watching and did the project under the guidance of ecologist and parent Monica Kane. The project was unveiled on Tuesday in a specially made sign in the school yard consisting of the children’s own bird art.

“We spotted most of the birds on our large poster the day we went birdwatching,” said Deputy Principal, Louise Brassil.

“Our Senior Infant teacher Ms Dinan spotted a similar outdoor poster in Sherkin island school based on their local butterflies and I just loved the idea and we went with it.  I am so proud of the way it turned out and we are delighted with EF Signs who did it for us. ”

“The Board of Management agreed to pay for this and a party to celebrate if we receive word of flag approval in May!” said Louise.

The pupils have gone on field trips to Ballyseedy wood thanks to An Taisce where they learnt a lot about trees and habitats with Niamh Ni Dhúill.

They also have recently been on a Sea Safari to Fenit rock pooling thanks to Sea Synergy in Waterville where guides Tash and Eoin helped them discover crabs, fish and taught pupils about biodiversity on the sea shore. There’s also a trip to Sandy Feet Farm planned.

“The Greenschool Biodiversity flag has really opened our minds, and as a result, we have bird feeders, an insect hotel and a bird house on school grounds now,” said Louise.

“I hope that we might inspire the children and maybe this project might well be the catalyst for a potential Frank King within the school to come forward and find their calling,” she added.
