A CAR Free Day will take place across Kerry this Thursday as part of European Mobility Week, an annual campaign on sustainable urban mobility which runs from September 16-22.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage and promote sustainable transport measures and to invite people to try out alternatives to car use, i.e. walking, cycling, car sharing and public transport. Each year mobility week focuses on a particular topic – this year’s theme is ‘Smart Mobility – Strong Economy.’

Everyone is encouraged to participate in this one day event by trying to leave the car at home and choosing an alternative form of transport, i.e. cycling, walking, car sharing or public transport.

Kerry County Council is inviting members of the public to walk or cycle on the recently re-opened Canal Bank Walkway in Tralee Town which has been upgraded to the tune of €400,000 as part of Tralee Active Travel initiative. Lighting columns are installed and will be operational in the coming weeks just in time for the dark evenings.

Kerry County Council has also partnered with a number of primary schools in the Tralee area to organised a week of fun walking / cycling activities for primary schools students. For more information or to give car sharing /public transport a go, log onto www.traleeactivetravel.ie or www.mobilityweek.eu.

Could do with a barrier along the walkway for children

  2. I am sad to say the council has destroyed the lovely canal with this horrible Tarmacadam it looks horrible and i much preferred the lovely gravel tow path !! Now we have this horrible tarmac and these poles all the way out the canal. Not only that i think its Highly dangerous before the gravel path gave you some grip but this tarmac is smooth and people children on a bike can easily fall into the canal not to mention when the leaves fall off the trees it makes the tarmac slippy and when we get cold weather and frost this will be HIGHLY DANGEROUS !!! Before the gravel created a grip along the bank!! The council are Clueless they should have spent the money on clearing up the rusty trains and the mess they made at the back of the village with that unsightly rusty steam train which is an eyesore !!
