Austin Stacks Club News 12/05/14

Austin Stacks SENIOR FOOTBALL: Dingle 4-7; Austin Stacks 1-10.

After our best start to the season in living memory (we were undefeated in our first eight games) we surrendered that record at Dingle on last Sunday afternoon (11th May), going down to the home side by two clear goals in the quarter final of the Club Championship.
We played against the strong swirling wind in the first half and it was Dingle who opened the scoring with a pointed free after four minutes.

Early pressure by our lads paid dividends three minutes later when a super run from his wing back position by Ciarán O’Connell saw his shot across goal punched to the net by Darragh O’Brien.

A Shane Carroll pointed free in the 12th minute put us three up and that was still the margin in the 17th minute after both sides had swapped a point each – ours coming from another Shane Carroll free following a foul on Shane O’Callaghan..
A minute later Dingle got through on goal but Jonathan Conway made a brilliant save. The resultant forty five was put wide. However Dingle did put over two from play in the 21st and 22nd minutes.

Another great run by Ciarán O’Connell in the 25th minute yielded a point for the attacking wing back. Two minutes later Dingle reduced our lead to the minimum again with a pointed free and as half time approached they got through for their first goal of the game to send them in at half time with a two points lead (1-5 to 1-3).

Five minutes after the resumption we were back on level terms with two more pointed frees from Shane Carroll, and with the strong wind to our backs it looked as if we might press on.

But the opposite happened, as in the space of ninety seconds Dingle had got two quick goals. The first came in the 38th minute after Jonathan made another superb save only for the rebound to fall kindly for the Dingle forward who volleyed it in. When Dingle scored their 4th goal in the 54th minute there was then no way back for us. All our second half points, bar one, came from Shane Carroll frees. That solitary point from play came from David Mannix (47th minute), who did well when introduced during the second half.

Team: Jonathan Conway, Ronan Shanahan, Fearghal MacNamara, Seamus Bastible, Pa McCarthy, Conor Jordan, Ciarán O’Connell (0-1), Barry Shanahan (Capt), Greg Horan, Wayne Guthrie, Darragh O’Brien (1-0), Fiachna Mangan, Michael Collins, Shane Carroll (0-8 frees), Shane O’Callaghan.

Subs used: Barry Walsh (blood sub 11m-15m and full sub at ht), David Mannix (38m) (0-1), Denis McElligott (38m), William Kirby (47m), Eamon McAllen (53m).

U12 (A) Boys: Ballymacelligott 5-22 Milltown-Castlemaine 5-5.
Played on Sunday evening 11/05/14. The boys were competing in their final game of this league. They were chasing their fourth win in a row and tore into the game from the throw in. Darragh Leen was impressive in mid field and lay the foundations for many scores. The boys were very dominant in every position and led 5-10 to 1-4 at half time. Jon Lowe had an impressive game at half back and we had the luxury of making positional changes such was our dominance. The final score showed the hard work the lads are putting in. Well done to all.

U12 – Boys. Ballymac Gold Team 5-21 Milltown/C’maine1-00

Played in Ballymac last Sunday evening we were too strong on the night and came away with a comfortable victory.Phase 2 of U12’s begins next Sunday evening, no fixtures to date but keep an eye on web-site.

Our u 12s travelled to near neighbours Currow on Sunday 4 May in round 4 of the county league. Currow A 1-7 Ballymac A 5-19.
A comprehensive victory for the boys who ran our deserved winners. Conditions were windy and the lads played with the breeze in the first half. They soon got to grips with conditions and played intelligently throughout. The pass and run game employed paid dividends with some great scores. Half time Ballymac 3-9. Currow 0-4 We expected at sterner test from Currow in the second half but in fairness to the lads they didn’t leave Currow get any foothold in the game. Again some terrific passages of play from the boys who are improving with each game. Jack Tobin is becoming a very competent keeper and Bryan Godley showed some good finishes in front of goal. All in all 1 to 13 can be proud of themselves.

Currow B 5 -6. Ballymac B 5- 10. Another fine display by our younger team. The training is paying off and they are putting some great plays together. Our defence was well on top. And the forwards made Currow pay time and again. Great link play is a feature of all the hard work these boys are putting in every Tuesday and Friday A great squad display from the boys Well done to all !

ACADEMY

Well done on a great performance by all our rising stars at Academy on Sunday morning. The U6 boys who performed particularly well included Ryan Harper, Seadhna O’Briain, Shane Brosnan, Conor McCarthy, Gearoid O’Connor and Daniel Moriarty. The U8 boys were also in action with Jack Joy, Martin McKivergan, Gearoid Healy and Ciaran O’Connell displaying some great skill and enthusiasm. A fantastic effort was also made by all the girls in attendance. Keep up the great work.

Our U10 boys took part in the first Go Games Castleisland District Blitz hosted by the Desmonds. We had two teams taking part playing games against Desmonds, Cordal, Scartaglin and Currow. Those who impressed on the night were Donal Daly, James Kenny, Sean Rice, Aidan Horgan, Maurice O Connell and Niall Collins. . Ballymac U10’s & U8’s travel to Ardfert next Sunday at 10.45 to play them. U8’s will travel to Castleisland this Thursday night at 7pm in Round 1 of Castleisland district blitz.

Senior Team
Credit Union County Senior Football League Rd 4
Spa, Killarney 1-12 St Pat’s 1-8

Our seniors travelled to Killarney last Saturday night to take on Spa in perfect conditions. Spa had the upper hand in the opening exchanges with 2 points from play from former Kerry Senior panelist Mike “Stam” O’Donoghue.

However, St Pat’s quickly settled and playing with the aid of a slight wind, the long direct ball seemed to be paying dividends. Kieran Hurley converted a free in the 8th minute to reduce the deficit and then St Pat’s struck for a goal in the 12th minute. Liam O’Sullivan caught a great ball from a kickout and he delivered a long kick into the full forward line.

The ball floated over Kieran and his marker but Willie Hurley was on hand to get possession and he coolly finished to the net. Spa responded with two pointed frees from O’Donoghue to tie the game at the end of the first quarter.

St Pat’s added two further points in the 18th and 23rd minute; a free from Kieran and a nice point from play by Willie to restore St Pat’s two point lead. Both teams were guilty of turning over possession easily and some bad wides in this quarter. Another free from O’Donoghue was quickly cancelled out by a point from Willie in the last minute of the first half.

However, Spa attacked from the resultant kick-out and added a point before the short whistle. HT Score Spa 0-6 St Pat’s 1-4.
Spa, playing with the aid of the breeze in the second half quickly opened their account with two frees from O’Donghue. St Pat’s reply was a pointed free from Kieran Hurley.

St Pat’s seemed to be picking up plenty of possession around the middle but poor decision making was costing them. The long ball into the Hurley brothers was no longer working as Spa dropped a sweeper in front of them.

St Pat’s began to run at Spa and when they did, it reaped rewards. Paul McMahon, Liam O’Sullivan and Andy Byrne attacked Spa at will and drew frees. Hurley was successful with two in the 43rd and 45th minute to give St Pat’s a two point lead going in to the final quarter.

However, disaster struck from the resultant kickout as Spa attacked down the right and their centre forward cut in along the endline, beating two defenders and finishing to the net from an acute angle.

This put them into the lead for the first time in the second half and it was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. They added another point in the 54th minute to increase their lead to two points. Liam O’Sullivan replied with a monster point from a free and it seemed we could be in for a close finish.

However, St Pat’s could not break down the Spa defence in the closing minutes and Spa caught St Pats out the counter attack from turnovers in the closing minutes and they added 3 further points to leave the final score a bit flattering to the home side; 1-12 to 1-8.

This was an improved performance from St Pat’s, particularly in defence and around the middle where they had ample possession to win the game. However, they must improve in attack in order to pick up vital points in the upcoming league fixtures.

Round 5 sees us host Glenbeigh/Glencar on the weekend of May 17/18th. Best for St Pats last Saturday in Spa were Paul McMahon, Liam O’Sullivan & Willie Hurley. Team: A O’Callaghan, P O’Connor, K O’Sullivan, D O’Sullivan, S Dowling, L Mulligan, P McMahon, L O’Sullivan, M O’Sullivan, A Byrne, B Poff, Jake Foley, G Savage, K Hurley & W Hurley. Subs: J Costello for G Savage (40 mins); Jeff Foley for S Dowling (40 mins); B Savage for K O’Sullivan (inj 54 mins).

St Brendan’s N.S. Blennerville

St. Brendan’s N.S. Blennerville are doing another ‘Bag 2 School’ collection on Tuesday 27th May between 1 and 2:30pm. We are looking for second hand clothes, shoes tied together, soft toys, belts and bags.

If you can help us, please drop your unwanted clothes to us in any large plastic bag on this day to help us raise funds for the school.

The school is hosting an ‘Active Week’ from 12-16th May. Children will take part in skipathons, a hike for 5th and 6th classes around Loch a’Dúin, have a health and safety talk (thanks to parent Maura O’Donnell for organising), drop everything and dance session, crazy golf, as well as a tour to UL for the older classes for rafting, canoeing, and much more.

We are making a huge effort that week to raise the number of steps taken by all, so we are going to walk to school every day that week from the windmill. We welcome parents to join us.

We would like to thank the Curran family for their kind permission in allowing us to start from the Windmill car park. A meeting for our new enrolments will take place on 7th May at 7pm to meet their new teacher and get to see the classroom.

Parents will meet with principal Terry O’Sullivan and get a chance for their children to meet each other. It may very well be the last year our infants will meet in a prefab, as the new building clearly is on the horizon now. For more information, enrolment form, and news, please see our web-site: www.blennervillens.ie

Blennerville/Ballyard Community Games

SWIMMING: Sunday, May 4th was a great day for Blennerville/Ballyard swimmers. We had our first gold medal early in the morning, thanks to Rachel O’Mahoney, who came first in the U8 freestyle.

Suin Fitzgibbon, Alison Lynch, Aoife Bourke and Cormac Gallagher also had great swims in the morning but unfortunately were up against some tough competitors in their swims. The afternoon session saw Blennerville add to their medal total. Grace O’Mahoney swam a magnificent final to get bronze in the U12 breaststroke. Ciara Drinan was in a very fast U16 freestyle final and swam an unbelievable race to finish 2nd. Mebh Maloney swam a nail biting U14 backstoke and it was the touch of the wall saw her win and get a gold medal.

Our next two medals were in the boys U14 breastroke with Cathal McLoughlin adding to his county medals total this year by getting a silver and well done to Darragh O’Sullivan who got a bronze in the same event. Sarah Gavaghan was outstanding in her U16 Butterfly and was well ahead of the pack and finished in first place.

The last event of the evening were the relays. We had an u13 girls relay, Ava O’Mahoney, Grace O’Mahoney, Jenny Slattery and Ellen Wallace, it was a very close finish in the semi, with two teams to qualify and after the judges deliberated I’m afraid it didnt go the way of Blennerville, finishing 3rd, just out of the finals.

The U16 girls medley relay was the last event of the day. We finished on a high with the girls, Sarah Gavaghan, Erin Fitzgibbon, Mebh Maloney and Ciara Drinan swimming fantastic and won gold.

Other mentions have to go Ava O’Mahoney in the U14 freestyle. She swam brilliantly and was just pipped in her semifinal coming third, with two to qualify and Ellen Wallace who made it all the way to the final of the girls U14 breaststoke finishing 5th overall.

Well done to Sorcha O’Donoghue, Ciara Fitzgibbon, Emma Lynch and Kate Mulgrew, Jenny Slattery and Darragh O’Connor who all had tremendous swims and Sean Fitzgibbon who represented us in the U14 Butterfly final. So over all we came away with 3 golds, 2 silvers, 2 bronze and gold in the U16 medley relay. A fantastic achievement by all.

GYMNASTICS: Kerry County Community Games gymnastics take place next Sunday, May 11th. We would like to wish Rachel Mulgrew and Grace O’Mahoney the best of luck as they represent Blennerville/Ballyard in this event.

ATHLETICS: A date for your calendar, Blennerville/Ballyard community games Athletics competition will take place in St Pat’s GAA pitch, Blennerville, on Thursday evening May 15th at 6.30. There will be a special race for tiny tots and all other community games events will be for the u8’s to u16 age groups. The first four qualifiers in each event go on to represent Blennerville/Ballyard in the County Finals which will be held on 21/22nd June, in An Riocht, Castleisland. Check out our Facebook page for further updates and information on www.facebook.com/Blennervilleballyardcg.

Churchill Club News 05/05/14

rsz_1churchill_gaa_2Junior Championship Quarter Final:
Churchill 1-13 Dromid Pearses 0-16 (after extra time)
On a perfect evening for football, Churchill met Dromid Pearses in the quarter final of the Junior Championship. It turned out to be one of the most exciting games witnessed in The Spa for many years. However, after 80 minutes of sometimes exhilarating football, where no quarter was asked or given, it was still not possible to separate the teams and a replay will be required next Sunday in Dromid to see who progresses to the semi-final.
Dromid got off to a flying start with a point from their midfielder, Tomas O Currain, within a minute. This was to be Dromid’s only time in front during normal time. Benny Dillon got Churchill off the mark with a free after 2 minutes and the same player scored the next four points for Churchill, 3 from play. Dromid had 2 points from frees in reply.
In between, Churchill’s keeper, Eoghan O’Brien, made a great save to keep Churchill in front. After 20 minutes, Mikey Brennan, who was excellent throughout, got through for a fisted point, following good work up the wing by JJ Prior. On 25 minutes, Ciaran Crowley kicked a great point from play.  Declan O’Sullivan (who was well marshalled by Matt Finnerty until O’Sullivan went off injured early in the second half) replied for Dromid with a free on 27 minutes.
Chris Hurley then got a great score following good work by Mikey Brennan. Dromid finished the half strongly with a score from play on the stroke of half time from their centre back, Padraig O’Suilleabhain. Half Time: Churchill 0-8 Dromid 0-5.
Whatever was said to Dromid at half time seemed to work, as they kicked the first 3 points of the second half to level the match by the 10th minute. Churchill lost Ivan Parker to injury and he was replaced by Fiachra Griffin. Cillian Fitzgerald put Churchill back in front again following a great catch and finish. Another Benny Dillon point and one from Cillian Fitzgerald further extended the lead with another point following great work in midfield by Ciaran Crowley. Dromid lost Declan O’Sullivan to injury in the 19th minute.
Dromid replied with a point from their full-forward to make it a 2 point game. For the final 10 minutes, the game flowed from end to end with scores at a premium. Churchill defended tigerishly but were unable to kill the game and as the game ticked into injury time, Dromid continued to press for what would be a winning goal. Their wing back Caoimhin O’Se came up from defence and his shot for goal flew over the bar. That left the minimum between the teams and try as Churchill could to retain possession, Dromid turned over the ball and their man of the match Tomas O Currain equalised with the last kick of normal time. Full time: Churchill 0-11 Dromid 0-11.
Declan O’Sullivan returned for Dromid in extra time. Brian Hill came on in the forward line for Churchill. Mikey Brennan and Benny Dillon (from a 45) edged Churchill ahead again but Dromid finished the half stronger with 2 points of their own. Half Time Extra Time: Churchill 0-13 Dromid 0-13
The scene was set for an exciting and tense final ten minutes to see who would emerge victorious. Dromid looked most likely to progress, as they got their noses in front for the first time since the first minute of the match, as they had 2 points from play within 5 minutes.
Churchill were now on the rack, but were thrown a life-line when Brian Hill was brought down for a penalty, following a great run. Cillian Fitzgerald cooly slotted the penalty into the bottom corner to restore Churchill’s lead once more. Dromid now threw everything at Churchill and it looked like Churchill would emerge victorious as Dromid lost possession. However, as Churchill tried to work the ball out of defence, the ball broke to Declan O’Sullivan, and from out near the far touchline, he swung over the equaliser to break the locals’ hearts. Though the watch showed there was still one minute left, the referee blew the final whistle.
Both teams gave a great display of football and are to be commended with the standard of football in what was a sporting match. Though Churchill will ultimately be disappointed that they couldn’t close out the match, they live to fight another day and should take heart from a brilliant display.
Team: Eoghan O’Brien, PJ O’Mahony Eoin McCarthy Mitchell Holland JJ Prior Matt Finnerty Cathal Rogers Ciaran Crowley (0-01) Mikey Brennan (0-02) Chris Hurley (Capt) (0-01) Daniel Doyle Ivan Parker Benny Dillon (0-07, 3 frees, 1 45) Cillian Fitzgerald (1-02) Garrett Walsh

SENIORS
Ballymac 3 – 9 Lispole 3 – 12
Our senior team suffered a very disappointing defeat on Sunday last as Lispole emerged victorious by 3 points in this Co. League game played in Ballymac.
Playing with a stiff breeze the home side got off to a dream start with a Luke Sweeney goal inside the first minute. Midway through the half Ballymac led on a score 3 – 3 to 1 – 1 with Padraig McCarthy and Gene Griffin goaling for Ballymac.

We continued to dominate the half and lead at halftime by 9 points on a score line of Ballymac 3 – 8 Lispole 2 – 2. Lispole came out for the second half with all guns blazing and made full use of the wind advantage. Some early points and a goal on the 40ith minute saw them narrow the gap to four points and from here until the final whistle the West Kerry side dominated proceedings. A Daniel O Shea point being Ballymac’s only score in the second half.

Team: P Laide, B O Donnell, TJ Casey, Denis Leen, C Counihan, C Reynolds, Mikey Leen, D O Shea, A Breen, E Reidy, G Griffin, L Sweeney, C Leen, P McCarthy, C McSwiney

JUNIOR TEAM

The Co. Junior Football Leagues are due to start on Friday 16th May 2014. Further details of who we are playing in next weeks notes.

COISTE NA NOG

Cailini Faoi 14: Ballymac 4-6 Spa 4-2

We came out the right side of a very competitive game on Saturday evening in Spa . Having got off to a bright start in the first half scoring 1-2 in first 10 minutes we failed to build on it , Spa came back with 2 goals of their own . Rose Ann O Shea grabbed our 2nd goal of first half . Half time score 2-3 to 2-2.

The 2nd half was a real ding dong affair with both teams having periods of dominance , with 4 minutess left Spa scored a goal to level the game but our girls showed great character in launching an attack straight from the kick out , Cora Savage pointed following a great move .

From the resultant kick out Rachel Godley fed Mary Healy who goaled to seal a 4 point win for us. Robin White, Micheala Murphy, Claire Kenny, Eve Creedon & Niamh Rahilly played well in defence, Leah and Rose Anne had a great battle midfield with their Spa counterparts and Mary Healy , Rachel Godley , Aine Rice and Cora Savage lead the way up front.

Scores : Aine Rice 2-2 , Rose Anne O Shea 1-0 , Mary Healy 1-1 , Cora Savage 0-1 , Leah ONeill 0-1, Ellie Mc Elligott 0-1
Team : Robin White , Niamh Rahilly , Claire Kenny , Micheala Murphy , Eve Creedon , Tara Murphy , Maeve O Sullivan, Leah O Neill, Rose Anne O Shea, Aine Rice, Rachel Godley, Mary Healy , Cora Savage , Ellie McElligott , Cait Rice

Buachailli Faoi 14: BALLYMAC 3-10 KENMARE 4-9

Our final County League game was at home to Kenmare last Wednesday evening. Both teams were on the scoreboard early on, Cillian pointing for us and a goal by Josh after being put through by Daire Keane. Kenmare were busy too scoring 1-3 , all scores inside the first ten minutes. The visitors got another 1-3 before the break, Davy Rodgers pointing for us to leave us 2-6 to1-2 behind at the break. While we missed a few chances we were rather fortunate not to be further behind.

We were treated to a exciting game in the second half. Substitutes Liam O’Brien and Darragh Broderick were making their presence felt and Daire Keane got two points. The visitors goalkeeper made two fine saves to deny James Carmody and Daire Keane. With Dara Leen and Cathal on top in defence Ballymac pressed forward with success. The goal we wanted coming from a piledriver from

Cillian Gallagher, who was having a superb game. Daire Keane adding two more points to leave the scores tied at 2-6 each at the midway point. The frantic scoring continued Kenmare adding 1-3, points for Ballymac coming from Josh, C Nolan, Cillian and D Rodgers. With only a few minutes left Daire Keane weaved through and found the net to put us a point ahead. Unfortunately there was still time for Kenmare to race up field and get another goal and give them a two point winning margin. This was by far our best thirty minutes of football this season and hopefully there is more of the same to come.

Action from the senior game against Legion on Saturday. Photo by Dermot Crean

Played in ideal conditions at the Deerpark pitch Killarney Legion proved too strong for Kerins O’Rahillys who were without a host of players for this club championship tie. Legion were first on the scoreboard with an early goal but Strand Road replied straight after with a well taken point by Declan Quill at the 7th minute leaving two points between the sides..

A great save by Garry Kissane when he blocked a pile driver from James O’Donoghue that had goal written all over it . Points by Declan Quill and Barry John Keane reduced the gap to a point Kerins O’Rahillys 0-03 to Legions 1-01 at the 13th minute.

Both sides traded scores with Strand Road having points from Jack Savage and Barry John Keane to leave Legion ahead by 1-03 to Strand Roads 0-05 at the 25th minute, then disaster struck before half time in a well worked move by the Legion forwards for their second goal to leave them ahead at half time by 2-04 to Kerins O’Rahillys 0-05.

The second half was only three minutes old when Legion struck for their third goal and it was all uphill after this. But the team battled on and great play by John C O’Connor mid field ably assisted by Rory Molloy, and points by Declan Quill, Jack Savage and Barry John Keane had the scores at Kerins O’Rahillys 0-09 to Legions 3-08 with 5 minutes to go.

We would have had a goal when Ronan Quill billowed the net from close range but the referee didn’t allow advantage. Garry Kissane made two excellent saves again in the second half and though the team gave it everything on the night Legion ran out deserved winners.

We missed David Moran big time who was injured also Shane Brosnan and Kevin Walshe who were also out with injury. Next game is in Round 4 of the County League on Saturday next the 10th at 7pm in Strand Road against St Michaels/Foilmore.

Minor Football
Minor Town League Final Kerins O’Rahillys 2-06 Austin Stacks 1-12
Following their defeat to Kerins O’Rahillys in the County League Austin Stacks had a point to prove and prove it they did.

Kerins O’Rahillys started off strong enough but couldn’t put scores on the board despite having their fair share of possession. The half time score was Kerins O’Rahillys 0-02 Austin Stacks 0-06.

Austin Stacks came out in the second half determined not to give the game away and despite fighting back and scoring 2-04 in the second half the gap was too hard to fill and A Stacks came out victors on the night. Players who impressed on the night were Gary Nolan, Ben O’Neill, Rory Doyle and Paudi Griffin.

U14/U16 Girls U16 County League Kerins O’Rahillys 5-14 Castlegregory 1-02
In our first game of the County League against Castlegregory our U16 girls got off to a flying start.

From the get go our girls took charge and dominated the game with goals from (Capt.) Shannon McInerney, Eimear Ellard and Shannon Quill. There was excellent defending from our backs of whom Jodie O’Halloran, Isabelle Bailey and Megan McBride played a blinder.

At half time Castlegregory still hadn’t scored and we had a very comfortable lead going into the second half. With some great direction from their Captain Shannon McInerney a rapid succession of points poured over the bar.

Castlegregory scored a goal and two points but another goal from Emma McCarthy sealed the deal for Kerins O’Rahillys. At the final whistle the score was 5-14 to 1-2. Other players to impress were Eimear Brosnan, Hannah Stack, Meabh Buckley and Ailbhe Mangan. Well done to everybody involved. U14 and U16 girls train every Tuesday in Ballyrickard at 6.15

Austin StacksSENIOR FOOTBALL

Austin Stacks 1-11

Milltown/Castlemaine 0-10

This replay, in round 1 of the Club Championship played in ideal conditions in Milltown on last Saturday evening (3rd May), was as intense and as tight as the drawn game six days previously.

With both defences excelling early on, the first four points of the game (two to each side) came from frees – Shane Carroll on target for us after fouls on Fiachna Mangan and Greg Horan.
The first score from play came in the 12th minute for the home side, followed by two more in quick succession to leave us trailing by 0-5 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter.

We held the opposition scoreless in the second quarter but only added two ourselves in this period – another Shane Carroll free after a foul on himself and, before that, our only score from play in this half by Shane O’Callaghan. Milltown led at half time by 0-5 to 0-4.

Milltown went further ahead inside the second minute of the resumption with another pointed free. However, the introduction of William Kirby and Darragh O’Brien (forward) at the start of the second half seemed to give us more impetus and, consequently, we got the next three points – one each from play by Shane O’Callaghan and Mikey Collins and another pointed free by Shane Carroll.

This put us back in the lead for the first time since the second minute of the game. Another pointed free for Milltown saw the sides on level terms again as we entered the final quarter.

We were now dominating play and, in the space of four minutes, we had took command for the first time in the game with two more Shane Carroll points and a goal finished off by Mikey Collins, who was making his first start of the season.

We were now five points up but Milltown, as is their wont, never gave up and, by the 55th minute were back in the game with three points on the trot.

This left for a nervous finish but two more Shane Carroll points closed out the game and we now move on to meet Dingle in the quarter final on a date to be announced.

Team: Jonathan Conway, Ronan Shanahan, Fearghal MacNamara, John Dennis, Pa McCarthy, Daniel Bohan, Ciarán O’Connell, Barry Shanahan (Capt), Wayne Guthrie, Greg Horan, Denis McElligott, Fiachna Mangan, Michael Collins (1-1), Shane Carroll (0-8 – 6 frees), Shane O’Callaghan (0-2).
Subs used: William Kirby (ht), Darragh O’Brien (ht), Barry Walsh (42m), David Mannix (50m).

Originally, the next round of the Co. League (round 4 – at home to Rathmore) was fixed for the coming weekend, but we now understand that our Club Championship quarter final tie, away to Dingle, may go ahead instead. Nothing has been confirmed as we write. Check Club Website for updates..

HURLING

Our Hurlers were due to travel to Abbeydorney on Monday evening (5th May) to fulfill a postponed game in the North Kerry Intermediate League. Check Club Website for details.
We have a bye this week in the South Kerry League with our next two games at home – to Duagh on next Wednesday (14th May); and against Kilgarvan on the following Monday (19th May). The 4th and final round will be away to St. Pats (East Kerry) on Wednesday, 28th May.

MINOR FOOTBALL

Austin Stacks 1-12

Kerins O’Rahillys 2-6

When these sides met in the last round of the Co. League just over two weeks ago it was O’Rahillys who triumphed, but on last Sunday evening (4th May) in the Town League Final in Connolly Park we turned the tables on the visitors to retain the James Hobbert Cup after some brilliant football by both sides.

Michael O’Donnell won the throw-in, progressed up field and put over a beauty with just 15 seconds on the clock. Rahillys equalized over a minute later from a free but two more pointed frees by Michael left us two ahead at the end of the first quarter.
Such was the intensity of our first half performance that we limited the opposition to just one more score before half time, while we put over three more – a Michael O’Donnell free and one each from play by Ciarán Flanagan and Calvin Foley to leave us ahead at the break by 0-6 to 0-2.

Three minutes after the resumption, Rahillys were through on goal but two superb goal-line clearances by Niall Carroll-Cane and James O’Connor prevented a certain goal even though a point did materialize. The goal did come for O’Rahillys three minutes later to level the game for the second time. Both sides then swapped points from frees – with Michael again on target for us.
Then, in the space of four minutes (41st to 45th) we really upped our game, scoring three superb points from play by Calvin Foley, Louis Ryle and Jack O’Shea and a brilliant goal by Jessie O’Sullivan to leave us six points clear as the game entered the final quarter.
In the next twelve minutes both sides shared two points each – ours coming again from Michael O’Donnell frees.
However Strand Road kept pressing and got through for a goal as the game went into added time but we held out for a well deserved victory.

All twenty who played on the evening gave displays that, on another day, would yield a Man of the Match Award but the already mentioned Michael O’Donnell and Timmy Murphy, for his first half display in particular, would just about shade it on this occasion.
Team: Danny Kinsella, Dylan Harnett (Capt), Niall Carroll-Cane, Darragh Scanlon, Cathal O’Reilly, Jack O’Shea (0-1), Jack Kenny, Michael O’Donnell (0-7 – 6 frees), Calvin Foley (0-2), Timmy Murphy, Louis Ryle (0-1) Craig Corcoran), Seán Fitzmaurice, Ciarán Flanagan (0-1), Seán Dukes.
Subs used: James O’Connor (21m), Seán Hurley (ht), Jessie O’Sullivan (35m) (1-0), Anthony Moynihan (46m), Sam Nealon (47m).
Our Minors (as a team) now have a break until the Co. Championship gets underway on the Wednesday after the Munster Final (9th July). In the meantime let us wish all those doing Exams all the best in the coming weeks.

Austin Stacks GAA Club News 29/04/2014

Austin StacksAUSTIN STACKS NOTES OF 29/04/2014.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 0-11; Milltown/Castlemaine 1-8.

In the first round of the Senior Club Championship played in ideal conditions in Connolly Park on last Sunday afternoon (27th April)  both sides could not be separated after 82 minutes of some tough, intensive football and must meet again after the game was still level after extra time.

In a relatively low-scoring encounter nine minutes had elapsed before David Mannix had the first score of the game. Two more points from Denis McElligott and Shane Carroll (free) left us ahead by three points to no score with five minutes of the first half remaining. But then Milltown put over three quick points (2 from frees) with a Shane O’Callaghan point for us in between to leave us ahead at the break by 0-4 to 0-3.

William Kirby was introduced at half time and he made an immediate impact, winning the throw-in and feeding Shane Carroll who passed to Shane O’Callaghan, who was fouled and Carroll converted the resultant free. Then two minutes later Milltown put over from a free. But the score that put Milltown in the driving seat for the first time came in the 39th minute. After some relentless pressure the ball broke in our goalmouth, and, following a defensive error, landed in the net.

The visitors were now two points in the lead for the first time but we kept up the pressure and with four points to two for Milltown sent the game to extra time with the sides level (0-9 to 1-6) after the hour.
Our four points came from Barry Shanahan (40m), Shane Carroll (free) (48m), Denis McElligott (49m) and Mikey Collins (58m).

Both sides had two points each in the first half of extra time  – ours coming from the two Shanes – Carroll (61m) and O’Callaghan (62m) and Pa McCarthy was most unlucky to see his well-taken penalty come back off the post on the stroke of half time.

The second half of extra time produced no more scores, so now we must travel to  Milltown for the replay which has been fixed for this Saturday evening (3rd May) at 7pm. It was good to see Kieran Donaghy making his first appearance of the season but unfortunately, after only nine minutes on the pitch, he had to come off with a shoulder injury which will sideline him again for a number of weeks. We all wish you a speedy recovery Star.

Team: Jonathan Conway, Ronan Shanahan, Fearghal MacNamara, John Dennis, Pa McCarthy, Daniel Bohan, Conor Jordan, Barry Shanahan (Capt) (0-1),  Wayne Guthrie, Greg Horan, Denis McElligott (0-2), Fiachna Mangan, David Mannix (0-1), Shane Carroll (0-4 – 3 frees), Shane O’Callaghan (0-2).

Subs used: William Kirby (ht), Seamus Bastible (33m), Kieran Donaghy (42m), Mikey Collins (51m)  (0-1), Darragh O’Brien (54m).

Subs used in extra time: Ciarán O’Connell (ht), David Mannix (72m), Greg Horan (75m).

HURLING: Kenmare 1-16; Austin Stacks 2-13.
After a traumatic month which, in normal circumstances,  no young people should have had to experience, our Hurlers finally travelled to Kenmare last evening (28th April) for their first game of the season and did themselves proud in coming away with a draw in round 1 of the JH South Kerry League.
It  was a poignant evening with many tears during the minutes tribute before the game for our beloved colleague, Trevor.

The game itself was very competitive all through, with the sides level at half time (0-8 each)  and, in the end, a draw was a fair result.

Scorers: Paul Daly (2-7), Danny Maguire and John McCarthy (0-2 each), and Peter O’Regan and Ronan Gilsenan (0-1 each).

Our three remaining fixtures in the League are as follows:- R2 at home to Duagh (Wed 14th May); R3 at home to Kilgarvan (Mon 19th May); and R4 away to St. Pats (East Kerry) (Wed 28th May).

MINOR FOOTBALL: This win, in the final round of the Town League played against Na Gaeil in Killeen on Wednesdayevening last (23rd April), qualified us for the final of the competition against Kerins O’Rahillys – a repeat of last season’s encounter which was only concluded just three months ago and which we won.
There were some notable performances by our lads all over the pitch in the Killeen game, with Seán Fitzmaurice scoring a hat trick of goals and eleven players in total getting on the score sheet, including three of our defenders.
Team: Danny Kinsella, Darragh Scanlon (0-1), Niall Carroll-Cane, Anthony Moynihan, Jack Kenny  (Capt) (0-1), Jack O’Shea (1-1), Cathal O’Reilly, Michael O’Donnell, Calvin Foley (0-2), Timmy Murphy (0-2), Seán Dukes (1-3), Craig Corcoran (0-1), Seán Fitzmaurice (3-2), Ciarán Flanagan (2-2 – 1 free), Sam Nealon.
Subs: Shane O’Neill (ht) (0-1 free), Jessie O’Sullivan (38m) (1-0).
The final has been fixed for next Friday evening (2nd May) with the venue and starting time to be announced.

SUNDAY LUNCH: Dave Baitson (former Head chef at Ballingary House Hotel and now of Tralee Bay Wetlands) is continuing to serve Sunday lunches in the Clubhouse from 12 to 4pm. Bookings on 066 7126942.  And the feedback (is there a pun there?) from those who have savoured the menu indicates that the fare is superb and the price unbeatable.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS: In the space of eight days three super Rockies have celebrated or will celebrate birthdays. Michael Chucky O’Connell was 85 last Sunday (27th April). Joe Flaherty will be 86 on this Thursday (1st May) while JJ Murphy will be a young 81 on next Sunday (4th May).  Happy birthday to all three from everyone in the Club.

CLUBHOUSE: As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties. Phone Ian from 7pm at 066 7126942 for bookings.

BINGO: The Bingo session will continue on this and every Saturday night at 8.30pm in our Clubrooms.
All at the Bingo extend sincere sympathy to Alice Naughton and Doreen Sugrue, mother and sister of the late Tom Naughton (see Sympathy)

CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions continue in the Clubhouse every Monday and Thursday nights at 9.30pm.

LOTTO: Last Monday’s (28th  April) Jackpot worth €5,000 was not won. The numbers drawn were 17, 21, 22 and 31.
The €20 prizes went to Pat Kissane and John O’Riordan, both c/o The Club; Tadgh Carroll, c/o Carmel O’Neill; Billy Ryle, c/o Club Rockies and Anne Murphy, c/o The Ladies.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is offered to the families of Mary Reidy (nee Foran), Connolly Park and late of Glenderry and Caherulla, Ballyheigue; Tom Naughton, St. Brendans Park (brother of former Club Footballers, Anne Slattery and  the late John Joe, and a former Juvenile player with the Club himself); Bríd Brosnan, Milk Market Lane and late of Banoge, Lispole; and Paddy Brophy, O’Rahilly’s Villas (a Co. Championship medal winner with Kerins O’Rahillys in 1957)  who died during the past week.

Juvenile Academy:

We had another great turnout last Sunday morning in the juvenile academy. In the u6’s we saw Robert O’Shea, Leah Kelliher and Keelin Reidy putting in a great effort in the warm ups and drills. In the u8’s, Diarmuid Wuagh, Grainne Breen and Kayla O’ Connor showed some great skill and determination.

While in the u10’s Roisin Griffin, Ali Lynch and Jake Foley gave it 100% showing superb ball skills and accuracy. Juvenile training continues next week at 10.30am. U10’s have a blitz at home starting at 11 o’clock and to be at the field at the usual time of 10.30. On Sunday 4th of May the u8’s have a blitz at home.

Under 12’s:

Our u12’s displayed another great game of football last Sunday evening away to Knocknagoshel. Unfortunately we didn’t come away with a win but we saw some fantastic football played with every player giving their best throughout the field. Daniel Moriarty making some great saves in goals and our backs Michael Doody, Mikee Healy, Danny Greaney, Matthew Quilter and Jack Walsh  were well on top of their game and cleared several balls.

Midfield Niall McCarthy and Tomas O’ Sullivan secured alot of possession and left the ball into forwards Jade Harkins, Liam O’ Sullivan, Martin Laucher, Cormac Lynch, Oisin Tobin and Dylan Griffin who took their scores well.

We saw some very fancy and stylish goals by Matthew Quilter, Cormac Lynch, Danny Greaney, Martin Laucher and Tomas O’ Sullivan and some lovely points by Niall McCarthy, Jade Harkin, Tomas O’ Sullivan, Danny Greaney and Martin Laucher.  U12’s have a bye in the next round. We are scheduled to play Asdee/ Ballylongford at home on Sunday 11th of May at 6 o’clock.

Under 16’s

Our U16’s were beaten by  a very strong  Churchill side last Monday night at home. Short of numbers and alot of players injured at the moment we were unable to show our full potential.

But best for St Pats on the night had to be Brian Murphy and Joe O’Connor who gave it 100% from start to finish. Also, get well  soon to Kieran Dwyer who dislocated his shoulder during the game. The semi final is due to be played away from home next Thursday. Details to follow.

 Senior Team

After a weekend off, our senior team are back in county league action this Saturday evening where they travel to Killarney to take on Spa. Throw in is at 7pm.

The fixture was originally scheduled for the following weekend but it has been brought forward to this weekend due to a change in date of Spa’s intermediate championship fixture. We currently lie at the foot of the table and badly need to pick up two points so we ask as many members as possible to travel and support the team.

St Brendan’s N.S. Blennerville:

The school is raising money in a bid to purchase 30 lap-top computers, so that each child in the school will have access to I.T. The Parent’s Association have organised a novel idea, having gotten the idea from Principal Terry O’Sullivan.

Two thousand envelopes are sealed with a number from 0001 (1c)- to 2000 (€20) hidden inside. Before opening an envelope, those donating must agree to commit to paying whatever amount is inside, be it little or large in the knowledge it will not surpass €20.

The donor is asked to pay the number equivalent in cent, so 1345 would mean a €13.45 commitment. We realise we are asking a lot of people but it is a ‘once off’, big effort, that we hope the school families and community will back, as it is a huge investment in the children’s education.

These computers will move with us to the new school building in September 2015, where we will have designated computer areas.

There is an incentive for those donating, in that, everyone who contributes, has their name entered into a draw for €1,000 cash. We hope to have all envelopes sold by the start of May, so if you are offered one, please consider helping us.

Finally, the Bag2School collection date of second hand clothes, towels, blankets, soft toys, shoes, belts will be on 27th May 2014 between 1:30-2:30pm. All clothes are very welcome, once they are brought to us in large plastic bags.

Lotto:

There was no winner of last week’s jackpot of €10,300. The numbers drawn were 05, 12, 14 & 26. The five €30 consolation prizes went to Mary Morgan, Derryquay; Mary O’Donoghue, Deelis, Camp; Elsie Healy c/o Tony Casey; Luke McNamee, Cloghers & Mary O’Brien, Curagraigue.

Next week’s jackpot will be €10,400 and the draw will take place next Sunday night May 4th at 10pm in O’Dwyer’s Bar.Tickets available from usual outlets or any committee member. If you’re not in, you cannot win!!!

Played at the Currow pitch last Saturday evening this was a back game for both clubs. Conditions were tough for both teams with a constant downpour of rain leading to greasy conditions with a lot of players sliding throughout the game.
Though Currow were the first to score with a point, Strand Road dominated the middle with David Moran and John C O’Connor getting good possession and setting up the attacks. We had our first point from Jack Savage followed by a well taken goal by Barry John Keane.
Points by Keane and the impressive Declan Quill had us ahead by 1-03 to Currow 0-01 at the tenth minute. A great run by David Moran through the middle who set up Declan Quill who put a low ground shot to the net increasing our lead.
A third goal by John Ferguson who cut in and a pile driver to the net left us ahead by 3-03 to Currow 0-04 at the 23rd minute. Two excellent points by Barry John Keane and Declan Quill left us ahead at half time by 3-06 to Currow 0-06.
We had the first point in the second half when Declan Quill put over the bar. Though Currow rallied great defending by Tommy Begley, Shane Brosnan, Ross O’Callaghan, Giles O’Grady and Martin Tierney kept scores at a minimum.
Further points by Declan Quill , Barry John Keane and the hardworking Kevin Walshe who had a great game throughout extended our lead by 3-11 to Currow 0-09 at the 55th minute. Two great saves by Garry Kissane when he stopped two certain goals and a final point by Jack Savage ensured a comfortable win.
Other players to impress were Andrew Thompson Kieran O’Mahoney, Cormac Coffey, Ronan Quill, Greg O’Connell and Kevin Mc Carthy.

Their next game is on Saturday next May 3rd in the  Senior Club Championship against Legion in Killarney at7pm.

Minor Football
Minors played Dr Crokes in the Co League Semi-Final on Friday last in what were appalling conditions for both teams and supporters. Dr Crokes were convincing winners. Final score Kerins O’Rahillys 0-04 Dr Crokes 3-11.

Ladies Football

Junior Ladies
Junior ladies played Austin Stacks on Sunday last and Austin Stacks were first off the mark when they scored a point after 5 minutes.
Kerins O’Rahillys/Abbeydorney followed quickly with a well taken free from Aoife Fitz which was followed by a Rachel O’Connor goal after a pass from Aoife. Another O’Connor goal was to come following a very intelligent pass from Catherine Sexton. A point from an Aoife Fitz free had us up 2-02 to 0-04 half way into the half.
Our mid field of Shauna Hanafin and Laura Collins were winning vital ball with great support from Naomi Reidy and Emma McCarthy. However Austin Stacks did not sit back and scored 3 unanswered goals to leave the score Kerins O’Rahillys/Abbeydorney 2-02 Austin Stacks 3-04 with only minutes left in the half.
Our girls didn’t give up and a great save by Nicola Horan and a well worked ball up the field to Rachel O’Connor resulted in her third goal of the day to leave the half time score Kerins O’Rahillys/Abbeydorney 3-02 to Austin Stacks 3-04.
Changes in the second half had Shannon McInerney come on for Natasha Regan and Oonagh O’Sullivan for Mckenzie Keane. Catherine Sexton took up an out field position. The half was a point for point affair our first coming from an Emma McCarthy free. Our backs Norma O’Connor, Ciara Neanan and Trease Moran were excellent but it was Naomi Reidy for her direction and Oonagh O’Sullivan for her solid full back performance kept us in the game.
Nicola Horan too pulled off some more great saves in the second half. Shauna Hanafin scored 2 points, Emma McCarthy 1 to leave the score Kerins O’Rahillys/Abbeydorney 3-06 to Austin Stacks 3-08 with 5 minutes to go. Chances were missed on both sides but a fine run and great passing led to a cracking goal by Laura Collins to put us a point up with only minutes left.
Austin Stacks equalised but we got the ball back up the field to Rachel O’Connor who scored a fine point. Score was 4-07 to 3-09 and we thought the game was ours but Austin Stacks put in one last effort with only seconds left and drew the game.
Final score was Kerins O’Rahillys/Abbeydorney 4-07 Austin Stacks 3-10.
U14/U16 Girls train in Healy Park Ballyrickard every Tuesday at 6.15.
U12 Girls U12 girls finished their Co League Phase 1 campaign with a home game on Tuesday last. They were defeated by Austin Stacks.
The girls showed great teamwork throughout the competition and it was great to see the improvement in players. Emma Sweeney showed grit and determination in Tuesday nights game that we knew lurked under the bubbly exterior.
Well done Emma. They now have a week off and then go back to finish off the North Kerry competition started before the County one.

SENIORS

Our Senior team resume their Co. League campaign this weekend with a home game versus Lispole.  Please check Facebook and Website for confirmation of time and date.

MINORS

Division 4 Co. League semi final Ballymac 1 – 7 – Moyvane/Tarbert 0 – 12.  This game was played in Ballymacon Friday last in terrible weather conditions.  The visitors played with the breeze in the first half and had six points on the board before Ballymac registered a score.  All the visitors scores were from play.  Ballymac score game in the 11th minute with a point from a free from Christy Leen.  Moyvane/Tarbert scored three more points before the interval.  Ballymac added three more points from Micheal Reidy, Thomas O Connor and a free from Christy Leen leaving the half time score Ballymac 0 – 4 Moyvane/Tarbert 0 – 9.

The visitors started the second half with a point in the first minute and followed this with another in the third minute.  This left the margin at 7 points.  A goal from Vincent Horan in the 6th minute followed by a point by the same player reduced the deficit.  Two more points by Gerard Browne and Christy Leen left the minimum between the teams with 8 minutes to go.  Moyvane/Tarbert kicked the last score of the game to give them a two point victory.  It was a great achievement by our lads to finish second in this group and with a bit of luck on the night could have qualified for the final.

This was a tough game of football and great credit must be given to the lads for the huge effort they put in. As all games in Divison 2 of the Central Region have not been finished yet, we are still not sure who we are playing in the semi finals this coming weekend.  Check web-site for more details

FAOI 14: ST SENANS 4-3   BALLYMAC 1-3
We travelled to Mountcoal last Wednesday evening to play St Senans in our fourth County League game. It was an unusually low scoring first half, the first point coming from Senans after ten minutes. We found it very difficult to move the ball beyond midfield and so our defence,( in which Cian Godley, Tadhg Brick and Darragh Leen were in fine form) were under constant pressure. Senans goaled just before half time and we were five points down at the break.
Diarmuid Lynch gave us hope early in the second half with a well taken goal. The next ten minutes belonged to the opposition with  Senans  scoring another 2-1. Josh , David Nolan and Cathal were driving forward but scores were hard to come by.  Points were scored by Daire Keane (2) and Diarmuid (1) but  Senans went up field and again goaled to seal victory. It was great to see so many people travel to support us and hopefully when we have everyone injury free we will have more to cheer about. Our final County League game is at home to Kenmare this Wednesday evening.

Sport: Churchill Power Home To Knock Ballymacelligott Out Of Championship

ChurchMac

Ballymacelligott 1-11

Churchill 1-16

A storming second half performance by Churchill was the difference as they knocked local rivals out of Junior Championship.

Sunny Ballymac was the venue for this first round Junior County Championship encounter and It was Ballymac had the better of the exchanges in the first half.

A seventh minute goal for Ballymac by Robert Fitzgerald was the difference between the sides at the break, the half ending 1-6 to 0-6.

Churchill came out of the traps with gusto in the second half scoring five unanswered points.

Wing forward and captain Chris Hurley displayed some terrific fielding while Cillian Fitzgerald and Ivan Parker shown excellent marksmanship in front of goal.

Ballymac battled hard and with five minutes to go the sides were level, 1-10 to 0-13, but it was Churchill who pulled away in the closing exchanges striking a killer goal and scoring three points to Ballymac’s one.

The next round will see Churchill face either Na Gaeil or Dromid Pearses at home.

Sport: John Mitchels win a classic in Ballyseedy

Mitchels Skellig

Intermediate Club Football Championship

John Mitchels  1-16

Skellig Rangers 1-11

Extra time was needed in what was a classic championship encounter bathed in sunshine in Ballyseedy last Saturday evening.

The first half was a hard fought affair with Mitchels having the share of possession and benefiting from a slight breeze.

Only for some excellent defending from the South Kerry men the Tralee side would have gone in with more than the two point advantage at the break, the sides finishing 0-5 to 0-3.

The second half began feverishly with the two sides exchanging scores, Stephen O’ Sullivan pointing for Rangers while Niall Sheehy and Jamie Moriarty replied for the ex Boherbee men.

Despite Mitchels dominance at midfield and under the breaking ball Skellig Rangers remained in touch.

With minutes remaining Bernard Casey fired Rangers into the lead with a pointed effort off his left boot, Mitchels however scored from the next attack, Niall Sheehy slotting over a free to leave the sides level ten apiece at the end of normal time.

Extra time beckoned and both sides began to show signs of fatigue, but it was Mitchels who came out of the opening half of extra time the better leading by just the solitary point.

It was the second half that saw most of the action with Rangers taking the lead when Aidan Dash O’ Sullivan hammered home to the roof of the net and put his sides two points ahead, but that would be their final score.

Mitchels shown resolve to came right back at them with two unanswered points, but it was Niall Sheehy who struck the fatal blow, flicking the ball to the net late on to put his side through to the next round.

Churchill GAA Club News

SENIORS
ALL roads led to sunny Ballymac on Saturday evening for the 1st round of the Junior County Championship.

After being a goal down at half-time Churchill  went on to win on a score-line of 1-16 to 1-11. A few features of this game was the majestic fielding of wing forward and captain Chris Hurley and the excellent point taking of Cillian Fitzgerald, Ivan Parker and attacting wing-back J.J Prior.

It was great to see Garreth Walsh making his comeback , coming on as a sub in the second half. My man of the match this week goes to Killian Fitzgerad. It was brilliant to see the support the team got on the night.

Next round at home to Na Gaeil or Dromid. It is hoped to have a challenge game away to Currow on Sunday morning @ 12 midday.

MINORS

I travelled to Ennis on Wednesday night to watch the Kerry minors beat Clare and it was great to see Ivan come on and score a point. We would like to wish him the best of luck for the year ahead.

The All- Ireland Quiz Final will take place in Castlebar in Mayo on Saturday morning at 11am. Representing Kerry will be the local team of Alex o Donnell ,Micheal Gaynor, Paul Culloty and John Flaherty.

This is the second time the club as been in the final, the last time being 1970 when we were reprented by John J O’Donnell father of Alex, Mossie Kelly and Dermot Crowley.

So everybody in the club wish the last well and hope they bring back the title. As chairman of the club I would like to complain about Croke Park’s timing of the Quiz at 11am on a Saturday morning. I’d be hoping our County Culture Committee and Central Council rep will bring this message back to Croke Park and I would be hoping the new incoming President might change this.

CHURCHILL UNDER 14s

Our Under 14 team played Laune Rangers in the semi final of the Féile na nÓg Division competition  at sun soaked Killeen last Saturday.

For a club with the small playing numbers that Churchill have, to be competing at this level is some achievement, but these lads have shown all year that they can play fantastic football and are well able to compete with the larger clubs.

However, on Saturday our boys were slow off the blocks and were down three goals in three minutes. A lesser team would have thrown in the towel but the Churchill lads settled and began to play some superb football and hammered home two cracking goals and two well taken points.

A point down at half time, Churchill outplayed Laune Rangers for most of the second half and were four points up entering the final few minutes.

However, full credit to the Laune Rangers boys who stuck to their task too and worked their way back into it and managed to force the draw.

Both teams faced into extra time and Laune Rangers were first off the mark scoring two quick goals. Churchill came back with a few scores but just ran out of time to close the gap.

Huge credit is due to all the players in this small panel and their mentors for the great ‘never say die’ pride and spirit they displayed again on the day.

The team played brilliantly and turned in a tremendous whole hearted performance filled with great skill and determination. Many thanks too to the great local crowd who travelled to support the lads on the day.

This support was very much appreciated by all involved. The panel are now looking forward to participating in one of the national regional Feile Blitzes to be played in late June.

Thanks must also go to all the many coaches and mentors in the juvenile club who are putting in a trojan effort in coaching and guiding the young players.

At every age group our players are being well prepared and coached to play to their very best and with pride in their club. Because of this work, our little club will have many great days ahead!

John Mitchels GAA Club News

MitchelsINTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP

John Mitchels 1-16 Skellig Rangers 1-12

We came out winners on Saturday evening in a hard fought contest with Skellig Rangers.
The first half was an even affair and points from Jamie Moriarty, two from play and one from a free had us three points in front after 20 minutes.

Rangers replied with two points from Ciaran Keating. Alan O’Donoghue scored two fine points from play and Brian Hickey added another for Rangers to leave the half time score John Mitchels 0-5 Skellig Rangers 0-3.

The second half was more intense which saw Rangers receive three yellow cards. It was point for point with Jamie Moriarty adding four and Wayne Conway one for John Mitchels. Ciaran Keating (3), Aiden o’Sullivan (1), Brian Hickey (2) and Sean Courtney (1) for S.Rangers had them ahead and the game into injury time.

We were awarded a free and from 50 yards Jamie Moriarty put the ball over the black spot to level the match and bring it to extra time. The first half of extra time saw Skellig score 1-1, the goal coming from Bernard Walsh and the point by Ciaran Keating.

In the final ten minutes our fitness showed and we went on to score 1-6 to Skellig’s 1 point. Our scores coming from Wayne Conway (1), Alan O’ Donoghue (1), Jamie Moriarty (2), and Shane O’Connor (1).

Brian Hickey kicked another for S. Rangers but we came out winners in the end by 4 points. There were a lot of players on both sides who might have deserved man of the match but Jamie Moriarty with a tally of 10 points and under pressure for a lot of them showed his metal to deserve the man of the match.

We are now away to the winners of Ardfert or St. Marys in Round 2.

NA GAEIL 21st APRIL 2014

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Please come and support Na Gaeil playing Dromid Pearses this Saturday at home @ 6 30pm.

NA GAEIL MINIORS

Na Gaeil were awarded a walkover against Currow in the final round of the County League and now travel to take on Fossa in the semi final. Best of luck to them.

CONGRATULATIONS

To Andrew Barry on his debut championship game with the Kerry minors who beat Clare in Ennis on Wednesday last. Great to have a rising star and also gain recognition for the club. Kerry now face Tipperary in the next round.

MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE

The draw for the semi finals of Div 4 are Fossa v Na Gaeil. These games are fixed for Friday April 25th at 6.30pm, extra time if required.

NA GAEIL U14

After their second half performance against Glenflesk and their results in the Feile competition, Na Gaeil travelled with confidence last Wednesday for their third round County League match versus Cordal/Scart in Scartaglen. However we met a very strong and skilful home side who ran out convincing winners. Cordal/Scart opened the scoring with a point before Robin McCarthy got Na Gaeil’s first score after three minutes. This was followed a minute later by another point from Dan Goggin. Cordal/Scart scored two goals in quick succession to open a five point lead. Na Gaeil struck back with scores from David Boyle, Tadgh Lynch and Dan Goggin to leave the scores level after fifteen minutes. Cordal/Scart got the next two points before Robin McCarthy got his second point after twenty minutes to leave the home side one point ahead. However the final ten minutes of the half was dominated by the home side who scored three goals and a point in this crucial period to leave the half time score, Na Gaeil 1-5, Cordal/Scart 4-5.

Robin McCarthy opened the scoring in the second half when he scored a goal after two minutes. However any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Cordal/Scart immediately replied with a goal and three points. Dan Goggin got Na Gaeil’s second score after ten minutes, but the home side struck back immediately with another goal which put them in total control of the game. They dominated the next ten minutes of the game and scored at ease to open a dominant lead. Na Gaeil got late scores from Robin McCarthy, Dan Goggin and Tadgh Lynch to leave the final score Na Gaeil 4-7, Cordal/Scart 9-11. We came up against a very strong home side who are favourites to win the County league, but Lee Byrne, Seamus Harty, Aaron Dewey, Damien Bourke and Adam Burke never gave up and tried their best until the final whistle.

Panel: D Fitzgerald, L Byrne, S Harty, E Cahill, R O’Sullivan, D Bourke, A Dewey, T Lynch, R Murphy, D Boyle, D Goggin, A Burke, S Ryan, R McCarthy, J Costello, D Healy, C Hayes, R McCarthy, J O’Donoghue..

Our next match in the County league is next Tuesday away to Rathmore at 7.30 pm.

On Saturday Na Gaeil played Glenflesk in the semi-final of Feile Peil na nOg. Na Gaeil got a dream when David Boyle scored a goal straight from the throw in. This was followed up immediately with another goal from Dan Goggin and a point from Robin McCarthy. However Glenflesk were soon back in the game when they scored a goal with their first attack. Adam Burke got the next score when he scored a point after a great run to open a five point lead. Glenflesk struck back with a second goal and a point before Rory Murphy got the final score of the first period to leave the half time score Na Gaeil 2-3, Glenflesk 2-1.

Na Gaeil opened the scoring in the second half when Robin McCarthy got his second point of the game. This was followed on five minutes by a great goal from Dan Goggin. At this stage Na Gaeil were playing good football and two further points from Dan extended their lead to eight points. However Glenflesk didn’t give up and a lucky goal after ten minutes brought them back into the game. Na Gaeil had chances to extend their lead but missed a number of chances. These missed opportunities would come back to haunt them when Glenflesk got two quick goals to lead for the first time in the game with minutes remaining. Na Gaeil tried in vain to score the equaliser but unfortunately through a combination of back decision making a bad luck could not find an equaliser and the game ended with the final score line Na Gaeil 3-6, Glenflesk 5-1.

This was a game that Na Gaeil should have won and which the Glenflesk mentors admitted that they were extremely lucky to win. There were good performances throughout the team but in the end missed opportunities cost us victory.

Panel: D Fitzgerald, L Byrne, S Harty, D Bourke, A Dewey, F Barry, D Reen, T Lynch, R Murphy, D Boyle, R O’Sullivan, J Costello, R McCarthy, D Goggin, S Ryan, D Healy, R McCarthy,C Hayes,J O’Donoghue.

We were now 1-3 to 0-1 ahead midway through the half. Both sides scored a point each to leave the half time score 1-4 to 0-2 in our favour.
It was all Gneeveguilla early in the second half scoring 3-3inside the first 20 minutes, Dara Keane getting two points for us. All was not lost however as Josh got possession and with no obvious pass on found the net from far out. When Dara pointed from a free there was only a point in it but the visitors went upfield and secured a win with the final point. However Glenflesk finished stronger and ran out 8-12 to 4-08 winners at the final whistle. The score would have been much higher only for the heroic efforts of the Kerins O’Rahillys keeper Barry Foley.

Some fine kicking of scores came from both teams with Conor Hayes, Darragh Fitzgerald, Josh Wadding and Dominic Lyons from Stand Road and Alan J.
