THE Irish Cultural Centre of Greater Boston (ICC) is to honour a couple for their 38-year contributions and philanthropic work with the Boston and New England Rose of Tralee.

The Gradam Dóchais (The Hope Award) will be presented to Deirdre and Bob Leger, who travel to the Festival every year in Tralee, at an event in Boston on Tuesday, March 12.

Each year, the ICC hosts a smaller version of the Rose of Tralee festival in Canton to determine the final New England and Boston Rose of Tralee nominee, who will then travel to Tralee for the festival.

Deirdre and Bob Leger’s journey with the Rose of Tralee began in 1985 when the Irish American Club in Billerica became a founding member of the Boston New England Rose of Tralee organization.

As founders, Bob and Deirdre played a pivotal role in the organization and execution of the Boston and New England Rose of Tralee Festival.

Their contributions extended beyond what was expected, and they became mentors to all competing young ladies, especially the Roses and their families.

Bob and Deirdre continue to be guides throughout the intricate planning involved in travelling to the International Rose of Tralee Festival.

From helping organise tickets to various events to accompanying and guiding Roses through the multitude of functions, Bob and Deirdre have become a reassuring presence for Roses across nearly four decades.

“The Irish Cultural Centre, alongside the Boston and New England Rose of Tralee committee, is grateful for Bob and Deirdre’s enduring commitment and assistance over nearly four decades,” said Martina Curtin, President of the ICC Board.

“Their transformative community involvement and commitment to the Rose of Tralee over the years has positively impacted many Roses’ journeys to Tralee.”

“Deirdre and Bob are the backbone of the Boston and New England Rose of Tralee committee,” said Fiona Weir, 2023 New England Rose of Tralee.

“Not only do they do an incredible job of helping you and your family navigate the festival in Tralee, but Deirdre and Bob work hard to keep all Boston Roses, both past and present, connected to each other as part of a community. There is so much respect for them in the entire Rose of Tralee festival, and I’m so happy to see them receive this honour.”
