IT’S exciting times for the IT Tralee football team as they prepare to face IT Carlow in the opening round of the Sigerson Cup this Sunday.

The game will take place at the Austin Stack Park GAA Pitch, Tralee and will have a throw in time of 2pm.

The winner of this game will go straight to the quarter-finals a week later (January 19th) to meet the winners of UCC v NUIG while the losers will play in a relegation final against the losers of the Athlone IT v Letterkenny IT. The relegation final is also scheduled for January 19th.

IT Tralee have Liam Brosnan back on board for his third year in charge with the college although this year he has Kieran Donaghy with him as joint manager.

Aidan O’Mahony, Eoin O’ Shea, Clive O’Callagahn, Shane O’ Rourke, Joby Costello, Conor Brosnan and Con Enright make up the backroom team.

Preparation for this game has been good despite the fact that the students all had exams in mid December and were away for Christmas.

They have played a number of challenge games over the last few weeks and this will hopefully stand to them on Sunday.

IT Tralee will be looking to a number of present and past Kerry senior panelists to lead their charge namely David Clifford (Fossa), Gavin Crowley (Templenoe), Dara Moynihan (Spa), Michael Potts (Dr. Crokes), Tony Brosnan (Dr. Crokes), Jack Savage and Barry John Keane (Kerins O Rahillys) and Conor Keane (Killarney Legion).

Greg Horan (Austin Stacks) is a long term injury and will miss the campaign while Conor Hurley (John Mitchels), Eddie Horan (Scartaglin) and Thomas Kearns (John Mitchels) all look likely to miss out on Sunday also.

IT Tralee come in to this game on the back of a poor league campaign having drawn with UL and lost to both UCC and Garda Training College.

Unfortunately, the timing of these games clashed with the Kerry Senior Football championship which meant that IT Tralee were never at full strength so it’s hard to judge how competitive IT Tralee will become championship.

IT Carlow will be a tough opposition for IT Tralee as they are backboned by a number of Senior Inter-county players such as Trevor Collins (Laois), Ronan Ryan (Meath), Padraig O’ Toole (Wicklow), Tommy Griffin (Limerick), Nick Doyle and Niall Hughes (both Wexford) and Cian Farrell (Offaly) just to name a few.

IT Carlow have also defeated IT Tralee twice in recent years in tight encounters so a close game is once again on the cards.

The IT Tralee team also welcomes Lee Strand as a sponsor this year. Eamon Fitzgerald (IT Tralee GDA) said; “IT Tralee GAA Club would like to thank Lee Strand for sponsoring kit bags for the team. Lee Strand are also providing the team with Protein Milk which will help the players in their recovery after games and training. We are delighted to be in partnership with such a thriving local business. This sponsorship deal helps the players in their preparation and makes the team look a lot more professional as they head in to the Sigerson Cup campaign. We are very appreciative of the support shown by Lee Strand towards this team.”

Liam Brosnan (Joint Manager IT Tralee) said “The time and effort put in to preparing this team is huge and cannot be done without the support of our sponsors. I would like to thank Lee Strand for coming on board with the IT Tralee Sigerson Cup panel. Their sponsorship of bags and Protein Milk will be a great benefit to the players and we are delighted to be associated with them”.
