INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP – Round 2
We played St Mary’s at home in Round 2 of the Intermediate Championship last evening.

The evening remained dry and calm for the duration of the match and the pitch was in good condition considering the heavy rainfall in the previous 48 hours.
Mitchels started well with points from play from Alan O’Donoghue and Lawrence Bastible and continued to dominate the first quarter with Alan O’Donoghue and Niall Sheehy points from play.

In contrast St Mary’s scored 1 point from a free from Daniel Daly. Mitchels domination continued with a converted free from James Duggan and a point from play from Shane O’Connor. St Mary’s hit a purple patch in the last 5 minutes with points from play from Bryan Sheehan and Daniel Daly and an all important goal from Sean Cournane.

Even though Mitchels  dominated most of the 1st half, the half time score was
John Mitchels 0-07,   St Mary’s 1-03
St Mary’s levelled the game in the 1st minute of the 2nd half with a point from play from Conor O’Shea.

James Duggan put us ahead again with a point from play. The lead swung back and forth between both teams in the 3rd quarter leaving the scoreline John Mitchels 0-11, St Mary’s 1-07.

St Mary’s went ahead with points from play and Mitchels levelled play with a Shane O’Connor point in the 20th minute. St Mary’s forged ahead again with a point from play from Daniel Daly.

A point from play from James Duggan levelled the game once more. St Mary’s scored a further 2 points , 1 from play by Darragh O’Sullivan and a long range free from Bryan Sheehan. With St Mary’s now 2 points ahead a James Duggan point from play put the minimum between the teams. In the 28th minute a Ronan O’Shea goal put St Mary’s ahead by 4 points.

Mitchels rose their game again with a Bryan Costello goal putting the minimum again between the teams. A further Bryan Costello effort was deflected out for a 45.

The resultant 45 dropped short but Mitchels regained possession and a last valiant attempt from Alan O’Donoghue for a point came off the post and went wide. Final score John Mitchels 1-14 St Mary’s 2-12 It was heartbreaking for Mitchels after such a great display which surely deserved a draw.
