Senior Men – Our Division 2 team played at home to Templenoe on Sunday. The game ended in a draw on a scoreline of 1 goal and 9 points a piece.

This was followed by the Division 6 fixture v Milltown/Castlemaine which also ended in a draw on the same scoreline! Special word of mention to the team and management of our Under 8/10 girls team who gave a wonderful display of football at half-time in the Division 2 fixture.

Next weekend our Division 2 team are away to Listowel on Saturday evening and our Division 6 team are away to Beaufort. Please see social media during the week to confirm times.

Senior Ladies –  A rip roaring local derby justifiably ended all square between 2 teams who gave everything in front of a large attendance in this Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup Round 3 clash played in Kerins O Rahilly’s on Sunday last. Despite playing into a slight wind in the first half, the home side settled the better and points from Katie Nix and Orlaith Mc Kenna had them 2 in front in the opening five minutes.

Niamh Myers settled the visitors with 2 pointed frees to have the teams level after ten minutes but a sweeping move from Kerins O Rahillys ended with Katie Nix blasting the ball to the net and when Cliodhna Hayes added a point almost immediately the home side looked to be taking a stranglehold of the game.

A brace of points from Grace Hamilton and a point from play from Niamh Myers  narrowed the gap to a single point after twenty minutes before the home side added a point from Katie Nix and then scored their second goal through Sophie Hassett to edge them 5 points to the good.

John Mitchels responded when Diana O Keeffe found Niamh Myers with a long delivery and the full forward finished with aplomb to the net from the 13-metre line.  Myers added a point from a free and just on the half time whistle Ciara Falvey Byrne scored the equailser following good work from Shauna Hannafin to leave the half time score, Kerins O Rahillys 2-04 John Mitchels 1-07.

The home team with wind assistance began the second half just as they started the first and Sophie Hassett scored a lovely point from play on the fifth minute to edge them back in front.

John Mitchels responded and following good interplay between Ashleigh Murphy and Aoife O Brien,  Sarah Kilgallen was fouled and from the resultant free, Rachel Kilgallen restored parity.

Sophie Hassett edged the home side back in front after 15 minutes before Jamie Finnegan combined with Simi Ogungbesan who fed Clara O Dowd and after Clara was fouled, Niamh Myers levelled matters from the resultant free.

With Kerins O Rahillys going on the offensive the John Mitchels defence and in particular goalkeeper, Kayleigh Collins, Erica O Connor, Anna Murphy, Emma Carmody, Tanya O Connor and Julie Foley really stood defiant to keep them at bay.

With five minutes remaining Niamh Myers found Ava Buckley with a deft pass and Buckley scored a wonderful goal from just inside the 13-metre line to put the visitors a goal to the good.

The home side responded with points from Cliodhna Hayes and a pointed free from Sophie Hassett to leave the minimum between the teams and just on the call of time Cliodhna Hayes landed an incredible long range free to ensure that honours were even following a fantastic game of football.

Under 16 Girls and Minors – John Mitchels Under 16s travelled to Ballyduff on Saturday evening in the North Kerry League Division 3 game.

Against a very strong, fit Ballyduff team, it was always going to be a difficult task, particularly as Mitchels were missing a number of key players. And with the wind behind them in the first half, Ballyduff started strongly, scoring 2 early goals to give them a definitive edge.

After the first quarter, coaches Brian, Denis and Martin made a number of tactical changes, which helped close down Ballyduff’s dangerous full forward. Mitchels were working hard around the middle of the field, with Nadya, Eva and Ellie working hard, but they were getting little room to operate up front where the Ballyduff defence was very tight.

The second half saw Mitchels benefit from the wind and helped the ball move in quickly. They also tightened up in defence, through Eabha, Nicole and Sadhbh and this severely limited the opportunities for Ballyduff.

Injuries during the game also saw Mitchels lose key players, and they kicked a number of wides from close range, before Nadya closed the scoring with a good point.

A tough challenge from a very strong Ballyduff team, but it was heartening to see the team compete right until the final whistle.  Training for our Minor Girls and Under 16s continues on Monday and Thursday this week.
