Junior Football League 2015 Group 1
On Friday night last we hosted the men from Killorglin, Laune Rangers, in what was a vital County League fixture for us.
We had been unsuccessful in our previous outings to secure a win in what is a top class division for Junior football in Kerry.
I am pleased to report that we secured our first victory in our campaign against what was a well prepared and talented Laune Ranger’s team.
The match was played at a ferocious intensity, at times it felt like a Senior Championship game and our boys rose well to the challenge and excelled in all sectors throughout the match.
We had some outstanding individual performances in what was a great overall team performance. This team is now getting to understand each other’s tempo and movement off the ball.
Argent was solid at full back and it was great to see him back starring in a Mitchels jersey. He was ably assisted by Keith Madden who once again put in a rock solid performance over the hour.
Jake Moran and Pat Kearney were again very prominent in the game and Pat is certainly a Player that will excel in the future.
George Bastible and John Higgins controlled mid field and once again James Duggan was the most dangerous forward we had. He is very quickly establishing himself as very talented and a committed Mitchels player.
Dillon O’Brien and Mike Walsh tormented their markers all night and were very instrumental on nearly all the Mitchels scores.

Congratulations to Manager Robert O’Dowd and his staff and continued success for the future.

U-14 LADIES:
We played our Sixth County League game on Sunday evening in sun drenched
Ballyseedy against old rivals Listowel Emmets. This game was end to end from the start with
Mitchels playing with the breeze. We opened our score with a Claire O’Connor’s goal followed by a goal from Rachel Kilgallen and a point from Ruth Moriarty.Listowel settled and hit back with 2 points before Mitchels extended their lead with a goal from Aimee Sommer. Mitchels Midfiled of Simi Ogunbsa and Ava O Connell Buckley were working well and their hard work paid off when a Kym Sugrue found the net for a goal. Listowel kept battling and added 2 goals despite great goalkeeping by Katie Laucher. Claire O Connor scored our second point to leave it 4-2 to 3-3 at half time.

Second half we were against the breeze but excellent defending by Clara Callaghan, Emma Carmody and Lisa Costello kept Listowel out .Mitchels then won a free and a break away ball saw Laura Carroll score a fine point. Listowel made a number of changes and the fresh legs saw them re energise and score 2 goals and 2 points leaving the minimum between the teams. An Ava Buckley goal after an amazing run put us up 4 points again. Again we followed up with another goal from Rachel Kilgallen after good work from Simine Hunt and Grace Myers. Liistowl now responded with a goal and 2
points before Ava Buckley scored another goal despite Listowel gaoling again and held on for 1 point win. Final Score 7-3 to 6-5 .

We played our last Co League game v Duagh last Thursday evening at sun drenched Ballyseedy. The game was played at a fast pace and Mitchels opened the scoring with a Ruth Moriarty point followed by a goal from Rachel Kilgallen. Duagh replied with a goal before Mitchels struck again with a point from Julie Foley and a further 2 goals from Rachel Kilgallen leaving us in the driver seat at half time. In the second half Duagh hit back with another goal but further scores from Sinead O’Donnell, Aimee Somers, Kym Sugrue and Laura O Carroll ensured Mitchels victory of 3-11 to 2-8.

U12 Girls:
The girls ground out a hard fought home win over Kilcummin in Round 4 of the County League in Ballyseedy on Tuesday evening. In a game played in sunny conditions we scored two first half goals from Kerry Oba and Molly Brosnan to put us ahead at the break. These goals proved to be the difference in the end as Kilcummin applied the pressure in the second half and scored a goal of their own but we held out and ran out winners on a scoreline of John Mitchels 2 – 04 to Kilcummins 1 -02. This win means that we have qualified for the knockout stages and a win against Currow away this week in Round 5 will guarantee that we have home venue for the Semi-Final next week. We kicked on well in the second half where our half back line of Stephen Bowler, Jordan Mason and Ciaran O Leary were the launchpad for many attacks and up front Tyrese Flaherty and Conor Fitzmaurice kicked nice scores. Questions & Answers
Session With
Pat Brosnan

Profile: Pat Brosnan,
Manager John Mitchel’s Senior Ladies
Gaelic Football Referee

John Mitchel’s Senior Player From/To: 1983-2000

Player Position: Corner Back, Full Back & Mid-Field

Honours Won: U21 County Championship Title 1983

(Q): What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “For me it was being part of the team that won the U21 County Championship in 1983. We had a large panel of players and getting picked on the team was an accomplishment. The panel included players like John Higgins and Timmy O’Dowd. They both went on to win three All-Ireland titles with Kerry. It was the first U21 Championship title for the club and I don’t believe a Tralee team has won one since. We defeated Spa Killarney/Glenflesk in the Final”.

(Q): Which player(s) in the Club would you have looked up to?
(A):”When I came on to the Senior panel the players I would have looked to were Denis Mannix and Joe Myers. They looked after the younger players in terms of encouragement and advice. They also carried themselves very well on the pitch. To me they were dedicated Mitchel’s players”.

(Q): Can you tell me what is satisfying about your sport?
(A): “As a player it is great to be part of a team with your friends.
As a Mentor/Manager it’s satisfying to watch players that you have trained over the years progress to play at Senior level”.

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?
(A): “I played soccer at under age level U12s/14s.
My only sporting interest really has been and is Gaelic football”.

(Q): What was training and preparation for games like in your time as a player compared to now?
(A): “It was much different and somewhat harder in my time. We didn’t have the facilities that are in place now. We had to train in mucky torn up pitches quite often in the dark with maybe just one light. The level of fitness wasn’t there then compared to today. Today you have to be an athlete to play football. In my time we concentrated on football first and our fitness got better as the season went on”.

(Q): What was one of your biggest disappointments as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “For me it was the defeat in the final of the U21 County Championship in 1985 to Kenmare in Milltown/Castlemaine GAA grounds”.

(Q): If you could change a rule(s) in Gaelic football what would that be?
(A): “I thick some rule should be introduced to restrict the number of hand passes.
Over use of the hand pass is completely slowing the game. The game has become too defensive. Maybe a rule that once the ball passes over the half way line it can’t come back on to a team’s own half”.

(Q): Can you tell me something of your role as Manager of the Ladies Senior team?
(A): “I believe ladies football has a good future in the Club. I came in as Manager last year and we progressed to Div3 in the County and won a Junior B title. This year we have so far won the Div3 League. It is tough for many of the ladies that come from U16 straight in to the Senior ranks. But all of them are a welcome addition to the team”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the Club?
(A): “I believe the club has a great future. At present we have great facilities in place.
We have a very good under age structure and great support from the Club.
I would like to see more people get involved with the Club at whatever level.
Especially people that are no longer playing football but might have a lot to offer as Mentors of Juvenile teams”.
