WITH less than a month to go to Alzheimer’s Tea Day 2023, TV stars Bryan Murray and Una Crawford-O’Brien are urging Kerry people to take part to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

The event takes place on May 4th and you can register for your free Tea Day pack on www.teaday.ie or contact The ASI’s Fundraising Team at fundraising@alzheimer.ie or (01) 207 3800.

It’s over 18 months since the couple first spoke publicly about Bryan’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Fair City star Bryan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease three years ago, and Bryan and Una ask everyone to get involved with local Tea Day events in their homes, gardens, workplaces, schools, local community centres or somewhere special.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day returned last year after taking place online in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19. Traditional Tea Day events in the past have raised €500,000. The ASI hopes to continue rebuilding Tea Day and, this year, raise €300,000.

There are an estimated 2,429 people living with dementia in Kerry, and each year more than 11,000 people develop the disease across the country – at least 30 people every day. Raising a cup and some money allows People Living With Dementia like Bryan to continue to live in their communities.

Many of The ASI Day Care Centres nationwide will celebrate with Tea Day parties in May. Our services provide necessary reprieve for people with Dementia and their families, and allow family carers time for themselves; for their own needs and health and well-being.

Southern Operations Manager at The ASI, Breda Tuohig, said: “Tea Day is a perfect way for our supports and services in the region to celebrate all that we offer for people living with dementia and their families. Without the support of Tea Day hosts, it would be much more difficult for us to provide the care we do. I would encourage everyone to host a Tea Day event, your support is invaluable to us”

If you can’t host a Tea Day this year you can still support dementia care and services by making a donation on www.teaday.ie
