Mercy Mounthawk Group Wins Overall Junior ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Award

THREE groups of young people from Kerry, including one from Tralee, beat off stiff opposition from across the country to claim top prizes at this year’s ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards 2023.

The Overall Junior Winner and the winner in the Junior ECO-Community Development category was ‘Mounthawk Student Climate Conference 2022’, from Mercy Secondary School, Mounthawk.

This group of young people organised a climate conference in their school to discuss topics such as global food systems, fast fashion, energy, transport and water, with contributions from young people’s voices across the school.

Resolutions and action projects were agreed which have informed the work of the Student Council Environment Committee for 2023-24. The resolutions and action ideas were also presented to Sean Kelly MEP.

The winner in the Senior ECO-Community Development category was ‘Eco Empire’, from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh, Castlegregory.

The group of young people, which consisted of Claire Dowling, Eabha Lyne and Orla O’Connor, wanted to create an outdoor classroom to foster a love for nature and the environment.

The winner in the Senior Marine Life category was ‘MSLT Habitat Heroes’, from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh, Castlegregory.

The group of young people focused their project on a beach clean at a local beach near their school. They created a documentary to spread awareness and used social media to educate their peers and the general public on their mission.

The three groups from Kerry were among 24 eco-projects to receive awards at this year’s competition.

Over 1,000 people attended the Young Environmentalist Awards 2023 showcase and finals. From nearly 280 projects across 27 counties, 104 schools or youth organisations were shortlisted for the finals and to showcase their eco-project.

The Young Environmentalist Awards recognise the work of young people who are tackling key issues in relation to climate and biodiversity loss, taking environmental action in their school or community and come up with creative solutions to solve environmental issues. Since it began, the YEA programme has attracted over 50,000 young people and reached countless others with awareness-raising campaigns in schools and communities throughout Ireland.
