THE efforts of a group of Transition Year students at Mercy Mounthawk raised almost €2,500 for Breast Cancer Ireland through a number of events.

Juliette O’Connell, Outreach Co-ordinator with Breast Cancer Ireland was on hand to accept a cheque for €2,481 on Thursday morning from the TY Active Leisure Class.

Student Jack Barrett wanted the group to raise funds for that organisation because of his own sister Lauren’s battle with cancer.

Lauren, a former student as the school, was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in June 2021 at just 21 years of age. After extensive treatment, she is now cancer free. Lauren herself raised a huge amount of money for the organisation last year with her ‘100k in 30 days’ fundraiser.

The students held football blitzes, an Easter egg toss competition, staff v students soccer and basketball games and more to raise the funds.

Juliette O’Connell of Breast Cancer Ireland thanked Mercy Mounthawk students for their efforts.

“We’re absolutely thrilled. I was overwhelmed by their passion to raise funds for Breast Cancer Ireland, they and their families should be really proud. A big thank you to Mercy Mounthawk also,” said Juliette.
