Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle

The Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle takes place this Saturday.

A LARGE group of cyclists is expected in Blennerville on Saturday morning to celebrate the life of a great local character who died five years ago this month.

The annual Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle takes place at 11am from St. Pat’s GAA Club, but there are more events planned on the day to remember a man who was a well known cyclist and musician.

He took part in many cycles on his bike – which was far from being a racing bike – including the Ring Of Kerry. When he completed that famous route, he would then cycle back home to Blennerville.

He was also known as a fine musician, playing the tin whistle, mouth organ and accordion with aplomb and travelling to music sessions far and wide.

Jimmy Duffy was 67 years old when he died as a result of smoke inhalation after fire at his home on Church Street, Blennerville, in January 2010.

It was decided to hold a cycle in his memory and this has grown over the years into a big event with over 160 taking part in 2014.

The fun cycle will travel to Castleisland town centre and back to Blennerville again followed by refreshments, tea and coffee in Quane’s Bar.

Later on Saturday night there will be an anniversary Mass in Curraheen at 8pm and after that, a music session in Quane’s Bar, where hot food and refreshments will be served.

For any enquiries about the day, contact Maurice Hanafin (087) 2998206 or George Poff (087) 6814799.

Due to the provision of insurance and an ambulance, a fee of €5 per person to a maximum of €15 per family will be charged on the day. Registration will commence from 9.30am.
