Orlagh Winters: Debs Are Far More Sophisticated These Days

Orlagh Winters ProfileOK, so it was the early nineties and except for the dodgy perm, the thinking behind the look was quite ingenious even if I say so myself.

I am talking about my debs dress. I restyled my mother’s cousin’s wedding dress. Life was an awful lot simpler then, there was none of this spray tans, gel nails, limousines or dress change half way through the night.

In all fairness though it was still deemed one of the most glamorous nights of your young life and was a stepping-stone into adulthood.

We were still in school when we had our debs night or as it is known in Loughrea, our graduation night (a little ironic when we hadn’t actually graduated from anywhere) so there was no alcohol served.

This was probably a bad idea as the water jug at our table was replaced with neat vodka. Today’s debs are a much more sophisticated affair and takes months of planning.

I guess with social media and much more access to stylish looks, girls know exactly the look that they want. Shows such as Fashion Police and indeed our homegrown Xposé allow the débutante  the opportunity to find the perfect celebrity look.

The word débutante is derived from the French word “female beginner” and used to signify a young lady from an aristocratic family who had reached maturity being introduced to society at a formal “debut” event.

Thankfully for our local débutante ladies, they are spoilt for choice when it comes to buying their dress. Jasmine of Tralee and Killarney and Hannons of Castleisland carry exquisite ranges.

Jasmine always have wonderful dresses on the window so girls make sure and pay a visit. Diane and her staff will happily help you choose that dress that you want to make the heads turn.

Hannons

Jill and the girls in Hannons have super dresses that are exclusive to them so this eliminates the dread of someone having the same dress as you.

Finish off your look with a professional upstyle for the hair and whatever you do, don’t destroy the look with a bad fake tan. Avoid any tanning disasters by visiting Kate and the girls in Expose Beauty Lounge.

I can vouch for them 100%.
