REPORT: Defeat On The Road Last Night For Kerry FC

.

Ivan Hurley reports on last night’s game between Kerry FC and Finn Harps at Ballybofey…

Finn Harps 1-0 Kerry FC

Kerry FC made the 820km round trip to Ballybofey on Thursday night to face 5th-placed Finn Harps.

A long journey on the best of days, but made all the tougher being on a Thursday night compared to the regular Friday night slot. Due to work commitments for players, a somewhat depleted squad made the journey to the North West but nonetheless, put up a stiff fight against the hosts.

It was a very evening open quarter in the summer sunshine in Donegal. Sean McGrath had an outside-of-the-box effort saved by Oliver-Hiemer in the Harps goal before Ryan Kelliher’s overhead effort went wide of the mark.

Continued below…

.

Kerry will be thankful to goalkeeper Aaron O’Sullivan who made some super saves throughout the game. The first on 17 minutes when Harps played a lovely through ball into Ferry, but Aaron was down well to his right after rushing off his line. A brave save by the Killarney man.

Kerry had the first real effort that the crowd thought was in. Ronan Teahan lined up a shot from about 30 yards and with the keeper beaten, the ball rattled the right-hand post and away. Agonisingly close to the visitors taking the lead after 21 minutes.

O’Sullivan was once again called into play and saved another big shot from Ferry on the half-hour mark. But in the 36th minute, Harps took the lead through Patton.

The goal came from a Kerry FC ball into the box which was defended well. The hosts counter-attacked through 4 or 5 different players before Patton slotted the ball home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break.

Continued below…

.

The majority of the second half was played out in a similar vein to the first. Aaron O’Sullivan pulled off some brilliant saves to keep Kerry in with a fighting chance of getting back into it with big saves to deny Patton and Edogun’s efforts.

The hosts really should have been 2-0 after 80 minutes. McAteer with the goal at his mercy managed to drag the ball to the wrong side of the far post to the agony of the home support.

But in an end-to-end encounter, Daniel Okwute had a chance to level up the scoring with just minutes on the clock, but he dragged his effort to the right of the post and wide.

Some unsavoury scenes ensued after the full-time whistle which saw the referee flash three red cards. Conor McCarthy and Kennedy Amechi being shown straight reds along with a Finn Harps coach McHugh.

So it was to be a defeat for Kerry on the road by the smallest of margins. Next up, Kerry entertain Bray Wanderers in Mounthawk Park next Friday night.

FINN HARPS: Tim Hiemer, Jamie Watson, Noe Baba, Matt Makinson, Kevin Jordan, Gavin McAteer, Ryan Rainey, Sean Patton, Tony McNamee, Patrick Ferry, Success Edogun. Subs: Stephen Doherty for Jordan (73), Conor Tourish for McAteer (90), Max Hutchison for McNamee (90), Max Johnston for Ferry (90)

KERRY FC: Aaron O’Sullivan, Samuel Aladesanusi, Andy Spain, Ethan Kos, Sean O’Connell, Ronan Teahan, Daire McCarthy, Sean McGrath, Kennedy Amechi, Ryan Kelliher, Nathan Gleeson. Subs: Daniel Okwute for Amechi (ht), Cian Brosnan for Gleeson (71), Graham O’Reilly for Teahan (77)

THE future of Austin Stacks is in rude health after their Under 21s won the Acorn County U21 Football Championship Final last night at Austin Stack Park.

St Brendans provided the opposition, featuring players from Ardfert, Kerins O’Rahillys, John Mitchels, Na Gaeil and Churchill, but it was the club side who proved the stronger.

The Rockies led by nine points at the break (2-8 to 0-5) — with goals from Daniel Kirby and Damien Hogan — which set them up nicely for an eventual 2-12 to 0-10 victory.

The James Coffey Memorial Cup was presented to Austin Stacks Captain, Conor Horan by Patrick O’Sullivan, Chairman of Kerry GAA.

Conor Horan was also Man of the Match and was presented with his trophy by Eddie Enright of Ask Acorn, Championship Sponsors. Adrienne McLoughlin was there to take photos (below)…

Council Supports ‘Think Before You Flush’ Campaign At Kerry Beaches

.

THE Think Before You Flush campaign, in collaboration with Kerry County Council and the Blue Flag programme returns this year with the combined goal of educating beach goers around what should and should not be flushed down public toilets when visiting the coast during the summer months.

2024 sees the continuation of this landmark collaboration which began in 2023 and the goal remains the same; keeping Irelands beautiful Blue Flag beaches and marinas clean and tidy and protecting our spectacular marine habitats from sewage based pollution.

The “Think Before You Flush” campaign, operated by Clean Coasts in partnership with Uisce Éireann, emphasises the importance of appropriate flushing behaviour and disposal of items including wipes and other sanitary products, even if they are labelled as flushable.

Continued below…

.

Only the 3 Ps: pee, poo and paper should be flushed down the toilet, everything else should go in the bin.

When items such as wipes and sanitary products are flushed down the toilet, they can cause serious blockages in waste water systems, causing sewage overflows which can pollute our rivers, lakes, beaches and coastlines.

Kerry County Council has united in their commitment to spread awareness about the campaign and promote responsible waste disposal practices.

Under this collaborative effort, participating Authorities will display Think Before You Flush signage on Blue Flag Beaches and marinas, offering clear instructions on appropriate flushing behaviour, highlighting the main items people incorrectly flush down their toilets (the ‘Dirty Dozen’) and encouraging visitors to use designated sanitary waste bins.

Bronagh Moore, Coastal Communities Manager at Clean Coasts, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaborative efforts and support of the campaign: ‘It’s fantastic to see Kerry County Council supporting the Think Before You Flush campaign. This collaboration between councils and environmental programmes is crucial in safeguarding our Blue Flag Beaches. Their efforts and ongoing commitment to protecting our coastlines will help ensure vibrant ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.’

Volunteers Erect Fencing To Celebrate World Sand Dune Day In Banna

.
Volunteers erecting chestnut fencing along the dunes in Banna.

A SMALL but brilliant group of volunteers from Banna Coastcare gathered on Monday evening to erect chestnut fencing along the dunes and celebrate World Sand Dune Day.

Dunes play a huge role in coastal protection and for some communities they are the first line of defence against coastal flooding and high winds.

These fragile landforms are also an important habitat for many animals, birds, insects and plants such as marram grass, sea holly, orchids and many more.

.

“It’s vital we all please respect the signs and steer clear from these delicate areas that are trying to regenerate,” said Rachel Geary of Banna Coastcare.

“Massive thanks to everyone that joined us, we couldn’t have done it without your help   Huge thanks to Brid Colhoun of the National Parks and Wildlife Service for supplying the chestnut fencing and to Clean Coasts for awarding us grants to purchase the signs, posts etc.” added Rachel.

Kerry ETB Calls On Government To Tackle Inequalities In Education Sector

.
Photographed at the launch of ETBI’s #SupportYourLocalETB campaign at Buswells Hotel, Dublin were Colm McEvoy, Chief Executive Kerry ETB; Senator Mark Daly and Lisa O’Flaherty Public Relations and Events Management, Kerry ETB.

KERRY Education and Training Board (ETB) is calling on the Government to commit to tackling inequalities in the education sector by supporting the priorities laid out in the #SupportYourLocalETB campaign.

Representatives from Kerry ETB met with members of the Oireachtas at a briefing event in Buswells Hotel, Dublin, last week where they expressed their concerns.

The event marked the official launch of the #SupportYourLocalETB campaign and was organised byEducation and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), the representative body of 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs) nationwide.

Continued below…

.

The four priorities outlined in the #SupportYourLocalETB campaign that ETBI and its members are calling for government support on include:

• Increase the number and profile of Community National Schools nationwide;

• Increase in the Deputy Principal allocation in ETB post-primary schools with DEIS designation;

• Increase in funding for Further Education and Training (FET) so that funds reflect the proportion of learners, and ring-fence €600m in funding for the FET Colleges of the Future project, due to commence in 2028;

• Restore funding for youth work to pre-austerity levels and ensure pay parity for youth workers.

Launching the campaign at Buswells Hotel, last week, ETBI General Secretary Paddy Lavelle told invited TDs: “The 16 ETBs across Ireland provide education and training opportunities for over 450,000 people. We do this through running primary and post-primary schools, and providing Further Education and Training opportunities, including apprenticeships. We are also heavily involved in youth work.”

“Kerry ETB and all ETBs nationwide offer excellent, equality-based, inclusive educational opportunities to learners of all ages. We are proud to support Ireland’s diverse population of learners – and have a proven track record of doing so. We are delighted to launch our #SupportYourLocalETB campaign and our political priorities for the coming year. We are calling on the Government to commit to supporting our work.

“TDs can also raise these issues at local and national levels of Government, and ensure these priorities are included in their party’s manifesto for the next General Election”, Mr Lavelle said.

PREVIEW: Kerry FC To Make Long Trip To Donegal For Finn Harps Clash

.

By Ivan Hurley

The Kingdom make the 828km round trip to Ballybofey in County Donegal tomorrow (Thursday) to take on Finn Harps on Matchday 23 of the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division season.

It will just be the second time Kerry FC will play a league match on a Thursday night, given the start of the Euro 2024 Quarter Finals, all SSE Airtricity League of Ireland matches this week are once again pushed forward to the Thursday night slot.

So a near midweek jaunt to the North West will be no easy feat for Conor McCarthy’s side. As the calendars flick to July and no sign of improved weather conditions, a tricky night is once again in store for this young Kerry side.

Continued below…

.

Casting our minds back to Matchday 6 and the last trip to Ballybofey. A cold night in March was met with downpours of rain in Donegal, but Kerry’s resilience shone through on the night, leaving Finn Park with a well-earned point and clean sheet after a somewhat uninspiring 0-0 draw.

But that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Kerry supporters who made the trip North, who knew a point on the road here is well earned.

In the reverse fixture in Mounthawk Park just a few weeks ago, it was a Kerry performance to remember as goals from the in-form Ryan Kelliher and former Harps man Daniel Okwute meant the Kerry supporters had entered uncharted waters, back-to-back home wins for the Kingdom for the very first time and it must be said, a win in convincing circumstances for Kerry FC.

A point last time out has Kerry on 19 points for the season and 5 clear of basement side Longford Town. Although the playoff places do seem out of reach, Kerry do sit just 12 points behind tonight’s opponents Finn Harps who are 5th and in the final play-off spot at this juncture.

But it’s Kerry’s form on the road that needs improving as the season ticks into the final countdown phase. No win away from home and just 4 points on the road compared to the 15 in Mounthawk Park will need to change in the coming weeks if Kerry are to climb up the table.

The form table suggests Kerry are in 5th at the moment with 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw in the last five games. A side coming into a bit of form. But with just one home game in the next 6 matches, the away form needs to improve to keep some pressure on those ahead of the Kingdom on the table.

Two of Kerry FC’s main men in 2024 played for the Donegal side in 2023. Winger Daniel Okwute played for Harps on loan from Stockport County for the opening months of last season and even faced his home town club Kerry twice while playing for Finn Harps before he secured a move home in July last year.

Kerry’s shot-stopper Antonio Tuta also played for Finn Harps last term. The Croatian made the move to Ireland in August and produced some fine saves to deny Kerry a point on our last trip to Ballybofey.

Tuta signed for Kerry in the winter transfer window and quickly became the Kingdom’s number 1 between the sticks.

Thankfully, no fresh injury concerns have been reported by the management team ahead of this one. Valerii Dolia picked up another foot injury in the warm-up against Longford Town a couple of weeks ago and remains unavailable.

Croatian keeper Antonio Tuta has returned from a family wedding at home and is in contention. Kevin Williams is suspended for this one after receiving two yellows against Wexford FC last Friday night

“I’ve said it to the boys during the week, we tend to play well in Ballybofey but it’s still a tricky one when you go up there,” said James Sugrue.

“I’ve played there a few times myself, it’s a very hostile, tough place to go and pick up points. So when you get up there, they are going to be aggressive, it’s always going to be tough. But we are going up there to get the whole 3 points. If we can pick up where we left off from on Friday night and go there with that confidence and belief, I think we have a good chance up there”.

Family Resource Centres In Kerry Call On Government To Properly Fund Services In Next Budget

.
At the launch of the Family Resource Centre National Forum’s pre-Budget submission in Buswells Hotel were Fergal Landy CEO of FRCNF; Michael Healy Rae TD; and Jackie Landers, Listowel FRC.

REPRESENTATIVES from Listowel Family Resource Centre met with members of the Oireachtas at a briefing event in Buswells Hotel, Dublin, to urge them to adequately fund community services in Kerry in this year’s Budget, so that they can provide the level of support services that are desperately needed in local communities.

The event was run by the Family Resource Centre National Forum, the national representative body for Family Resource Centres, to officially launch its Budget 2025 submission.

The Family Resource Centre programme is the largest community-based family support programme in Ireland. Through a network of 121 FRCs, it supports families in communities experiencing poverty and disadvantage.

Continued below…

.

The primary call on Government as part of the submission, is for an increase in core funding for all 121 FRCs, to €240,000.

Earlier this year, Minister Roderic O’Gorman raised the minimum level of core funding to €160,000 per FRC.

At the launch of the Family Resource Centre National Forum’s pre-Budget submission in Buswells Hotel were Jackie Landers, Listowel FRC; and Pa Daly TD

However, this figure was identified six years ago as the basic level of funding for new FRCs. For Budget 2025, the FRCNF has identified the required level of funding per FRC as €240,000, for them to be able to adequately provide the services required of them.

Commenting on their pre-Budget submission, Fergal Landy, CEO of the FRCNF said, “Budget 2025 will be a key opportunity for Government to maximise the potential of the FRC National Programme to increase its capacity to deliver for children, families, individuals, and communities in Kerry and throughout Ireland, and in doing so, provide additional supports to communities coping with many challenges such as the housing crisis, poverty, the cost of living, and integrating new communities. But this cannot be achieved without adequate funding for our 121 FRCs.

“The current level of funding of €160,000 per FRC is intended to cover the salary of three full-time staff members, operational costs and the running of services in the centre. This is just not realistic nor sustainable. The shortfall in core funding is leading to a recruitment and retention crisis of suitable, qualified staff and difficulties in maintaining appropriate premises to deliver the high quality supports our FRCs have become known for.”

In addition to the increase in core funding, the FRCNF is also calling for no new Family Resource Centres, until the funding of existing FRCs is addressed and involvement of FRCs in the decision-making process, when the programme is expanded to ensure alignment to the existing FRC programme approach.

They all call for the Government to ensure consistent, long-term funding for counselling and therapeutic supports in FRCs nationwide and to develop and introduce a dedicated capital funding stream for FRCs.

Worst June On Record For Patients Waiting On Trolleys At UHK

.

THE month of June saw 376 patients waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry, the worst on record at the hospital for that month, according to figures supplied by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

It’s up from 274 in June 2023 and 345 in 2022. Nationally over 9,437 patients, including 70 children were admitted to hospital without a bed in the month of June according to the INMO.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “The fact that over 9,437 people were treated on trolleys in June is clear evidence that our health system is still far too reliant on a hospital system that that doesn’t have enough beds.”

Continued below…

.

“The Government must prioritise investment in building and scaling up capacity to meet this demand. This can only be done by increasing bed capacity and also employing nurses to staff these beds.”

“The HSE’s recruitment freeze is making it harder to provide safe and timely care as it is becoming more difficult to fill rosters when staffing is so short. Our members want to be able to provide safe care to patients but also be assured that their own safety in the workplace is being guaranteed — neither are guaranteed when they are working in overcrowded conditions with unsafe staffing levels.”

“The development of community services is critical to reducing the pressure on the hospital system. The recruitment embargo is making it impossible to fill posts in the community and therefore having a direct impact on the ability to provide care outside of the hospital system.

“The recruitment freeze is own goal after own goal. The INMO is consulting with our members who work in the community on the impact the recruitment freeze is having on them. We are now urgently seeking that the HSE reengage with the INMO at the Workplace Relations Commission on their staffing plan for 2024, which still hasn’t been published at the mid-point of the year,” he concluded.

Academy

Academy is 11am to 12 noon every Sunday, New players always welcome to join us on Sunday mornings.

under 10 girls with the under 10 Currow girls

U10 girls

U10 girls played second go game against Currow tonight at home …a fantastic display across the 4 quarters by all the girls…big thanks to Donal Rahilly for reffing and Ballymac played well all over the pitch with tigerish defending followed up with great linkup attacking play.

With some fantastic scores taken,

Next stop is Mitchell’s this Monday night

Under 12 girls

The Ballymac U.12 girls played 2 games against very good Fossa teams yesterday.

A big improvement tonight especially in slippery Conditions.

The girls played wonderful stuff with some lovely teamwork, often ending in well taken scores. Our captain for the evening, Aobha Bolger led by example with a good few score, Saoirse Brosnan, out injured for a while, played like she was never away. Milly Sheehan, Doireann Broderick and Aimee O’ Rourke got through loads of ball and ran all night.

Again, the U.10’s, Jasmine, Megan, Chloe, Isha, Ella May and Natalia fitted in flawlessly, and contributed in every way. A big thanks to our refs, Anna Collins & Jill Quirke and also to JP, Tom (Academy coaches) and Heather who umpired, set out the pitches and encouraged etc. all night.

We play again Tuesday 2nd July at 6.30pm away to Dr. Crokes

Under 15 Boys

U15 Central Region D2

Ardfert 5-15

Ballymac 4-08

It was a high scoring game, and it was nip and tuck for 3 quarters. With many lead changes, we lost out ultimately in the last quarter, where Ardfert went on a run, which we couldn’t reel in.

Plenty positives.

Next up, Glenbeigh/Cromane

On Friday evening our u15 division 5 travelled to An Ghaeltacht in the first round of the central region  where we were deserved winners on a score line of Ballymac 5:06 to An Ghaeltacht 2:03. Thanks to the u13 players that helped on the night.

Our next game is at home to Kerins Rahilly’s in 2 Weeks time.

Very well done to Adam and Isobel today who joined in all the games with great enthusiasm. Thanks for the offer of more help for our hospitality rota to provide the juice and fruit weekly. Any more volunteers are welcome!

Well done everyone today keep the practice going plenty of kicking and solo and hopping also kicking with both legs and catching see you all next Sunday. Well Done to Kai who was our player of the week this week.

U8 Girls

We hosted Laune Rangers and Miltown Castlemaine this morning in Blennerville the games were very competitive, and our girls performed admirably showing great skill and passion.
Our girls are showing massive improvements every week with all these games.
Regards, Coaches.

U9

Our U9 boys were in great form for training on Sunday morning in preparation for Kerry’s great win! They all flew through the skills stations and played a super game to finish. Thanks to coaches Noel and James for taking the session. We have a game away to Bally/Asdee this coming Tuesday at 6:30pm.

U10 Girls

We took a short hop to neighbours John Mitchell’s tonight for this week summer schedule match and the coaches couldn’t be prouder of how the girls performed.!!

They played two competitive matches and more than accounted for their opposition in both with some outstanding teamwork, solo-runs, long range kicking and disciplined tackling.

Big mention to all our parents too for making everyone available – it was a fantastic St Pats turnout. We do it all again this Saturday morning 29th in a blitz at John Mitchells against a variety of opposition…details & poll to follow during the week. There will be no U10 training Sunday to give them a well-earned rest.

U11 Boys

St Pats U-11’s had no game last week, so we were training last Sunday. We had a good turnout and we worked on our kicking and handling skills. It’s important all our players continue to attend our training sessions and also keep practicing the skills at home during the week…. Naomh Pádraig Abú!!

.

U12 Girls

Well done to our girls who played very well against Cordal last night in Blennerville. We got some great scores and put some great passages of play together. We had a great turnout, and all the girls played their part. We won’t train this Sunday but will train on Wednesday from 5:30pm to 6:30pm and again on Sunday week from 11am to 12pm. Our next game is provisionally scheduled for Tuesday July 9th at home to Milltown Castlemaine.

U13

U13 St Brendan’s Town League

Our U13s lost at home to Ardfert in front of a large home crowd on Wednesday evening. It was a competitive game even though we lost by a wide margin. Ardfert u13s are a very strong side but we gave them a good game and played very well.

We were desperately unlucky to have a number of shots hit the woodwork, and the Ardfert keeper also made a couple of outstanding saves.

The boys put in a huge effort and put together some great moves. We lacked a bit of composure in possession and kicked the ball away too often.

However, we fought really hard to stay in the game and the coaches cannot fault the effort. The performance was a huge improvement on our last match against Ardfert. The coaches are really proud of the boys even though the result was disappointing.

If we can play to that level in the next phase of games, we will get the results to match the effort! We’ll train again next week on Monday and Wednesday at 6pm.

Seniors:

The seniors are currently taking a break following the preservation of their division 1 status last week.

Training will resume this week in preparation for the intermediate club championship, our first time to partake in this competition.

We are joined in Group 3 by Kilcummin, Laune Rangers and Listowel Emmets; the top two teams will advance to the quarter finals which are then played on a knock out basis.

We have been handed a tough assignment with the composition of this group – Kilcummin and Laune Rangers have both beaten us in county league division 1 this year whilst Listowel are on an upward curve having won last year’s premier junior title and falling only at the final hurdle in Croke Park in their quest for ultimate glory.

However, our division 1 conquerors will face a different proposition in the coming games as we will have a stronger outfit than in the league with the availability of our U20 trio, Ben , Tomas and Darragh and the returning Tommy & David; against that Conor Hayes will be a big loss as he is spending his summer in the US.

U21 County Final:

The county U21 football final will take place this coming Weds night, 3rd July when St Brendans take on Austin Stacks in Austin Stack Park where throw-in is timed for 19.30.

We would expect to have Jake Foley, Ben Hanafin, Tomás Kennedy & Darragh O’Connor on the starting XV.

St Brendans advanced to the final on the back of a walkover from Laune Rangers so their preparation was not ideal; Stacks had a one point win over South Kerry having led at one stage by 9 points, 2-9 to 0-06.

It promises to be a cracker of a game given the local rivalry and the familiarity which these players possess with each other with many having played together at secondary school level for Tralee CBS & Mounthawk respectively.

We would like to wish the lads the very best  of luck on Weds night – beir bua agus beannacht.

Kerry:

Congrats to Kerry and our own Micheál Quirke as they advanced to an All Ireland semi final following victory over Derry on Sunday. Kerry will now play Armagh on weekend of 13/14th July in Croke Park.

Lotto:

The lotto jackpot has now reached €12,900 and is one of the largest jackpots we have had in recent years. It was last won in June of 2022 and whilst there have been many match 3s in the intervening time, the four magic numbers have proved elusive.

The draw for this week will take place on Monday night 1st July and you can play online up until 4 pm at the following link –  https://clubs.clubforce.com/clubs/gaa-kerins-o-rahillys-gaa-club-kerry/

Paper tickets are available until 8 pm – the support for the weekly draw has been massive in recent weeks and we thank all those who continue to play.

U10 Girls at North Kerry Blitz

Academy:

U10 Girls:

Well done to our U10s Saturday morning in the North Kerry Blitz. The weather didn’t dampen their enthusiasm and drive and they played extremely well against all 4 teams in their group showing great skills and team work throughout the field.

Thank you to North Kerry Ladies for organising a great blitz.

U11 Boys

U11 Boys:

A very busy week for our U11 stars this week. On Tuesday we visited Spa Killarney and Thursday evening we made the journey to Listry. The boys played some great football on both nights and are developing into a fantastic team. Thanks to both Spa and Listry for hosting us.

Juvenile academy takes place every Sunday Morning in Pat Healy Park, Ballyrickard from 10am to 11am, new members are always welcome to join our fantastic club and community.

Summer camp –

Our summer camp is taking place from the 6th to 9th August. Keep an eye on our social media pages for  details on how to book.  Don’t miss out, it’s always a fun week while learning key skills.

Ladies Notes:

U12 Girls:

The KOR U12 girls were immense again in their match against Duagh. With our goalie missing, the girls had to step to the challenge of replacing her. Hats off to Rhona, Mia and Isabella who took one for the team.

Our defence was very solid with Duagh not getting an inch of room to play the game they wanted. Midfield, as always, worked their socks off and were very effective. Our forwards tried hard and  eventually the scores came.

Overall it was a good solid performance especially when some people played out of position. Thanks to Duagh for traveling to Ballyrickard last Wednesday.

U16 Girls:

Two more good training sessions this week, even with girls on holidays, those who were around attended both Tuesday and Thursday sessions.  We were represented in the u16 county team by Aoibheann and Saoirse Mc Carty on Thursday night in Rathkeale but unfortunately it  wasn’t their night but we are still proud of their achievements.

All eyes now on the county league starting next week.

KOR mothers and others

KOR Mothers and Others :

Our KOR Mothers and Others made the short journey to Blennerville to play St. Pats  M&Os. A great evening of football and laughter was had by all. Thanks to St. Pats for hosting us.

Condolences:

We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Anna Buckley, née Hayes, grandmother of our senior player Donagh, who passed away last week.

The death of Micheál O’Muirceartaigh has cast a dark shadow over the county and the country in general; his was the distinctive voice for decades for many people as they listened to his commentary of Gaelic games in  both football and hurling. He brought many a game to life painting stories of gallantry and heroic deeds and indeed there was never a dull game when he commentated.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam álainn, uasal, Gaelach.

Minister Announces Refurbishment Works At Fenit School

.
St Brendan’s NS Fenit.

MINISTER for Education and Kerry T.D. Norma Foley has today announced new refurbishment works to provide a special needs classroom in St Brendan’s national school in Fenit.

An existing classroom in the school will be redesigned to provide for a special educational needs classroom and for two special education teaching rooms.

Minister Foley said: “I would like to congratulate St Brendan’s national school in Fenit for the excellent work in education that takes place there every day. These reconfiguration works are important in providing a welcoming, safe and suitable environment for the educational needs of all pupils. I look forward to seeing them progressing in a timely fashion.”

Continued below…

.

The Department of Education has design guidance for classrooms for pupils with special educational needs.

Pupils who have difficulty with aspects of communication, speech and language need classrooms with good acoustics and good sound insulation in walls, floors and ceilings to minimise noise between rooms and outside noise.

There also needs to be appropriate levels of glare-free controllable lighting and appropriate finishes, colour and colour contrast including the avoidance of strong patterns and textures.

There are currently 99 special classes in schools in Kerry at primary and post primary level, with more than 3,000 in existence nationally. Each special class has a teacher, two special needs assistants and six pupils.

REPORT: Kerry And Wexford Share The Points At Mounthawk Park

.

Ivan Hurley reports on last night’s Airtricity League Of Ireland Division One game at Mounthawk Park last night…

Kerry FC 1-1 Wexford FC

Kerry were back in Mounthawk Park following the summer recess in the League of Ireland season, welcoming the South-Easterners to a wet and windy Tralee on one of the final June nights of the year.

Unseasonable weather aside, a large Kerry contingent packed into Mounthawk Park to see an inform Kerry FC side look to build on 3 wins in a row in their home ground over recent weeks.

In a fiery encounter that produced a number of cards, it could have been anyone’s guess as to where the 3 points were headed in the opening stages. Thomas Oluwa should have had the hosts 1-0 up inside the opening 120 seconds.

Continued below…

.

A looping ball over the top of the defence was met by the onrushing attacker, the woodwork coming to Kerry’s rescue early on as his shot whacked the base of the upright.

It took Kerry a number of minutes to settle into the game and could have gone in front after 10 minutes. A lovely weighted free kick by Sean O’Connell was met by the head of Ryan Kelliher at the back post but he nodded it just wide of Moody’s left-hand post.

A number of half chances for both sides continued the half in the same vein. A Nathan Gleeson cross on 20 minutes was nearly met by an onrushing Kennedy Amechi, but the ball was just behind him on this occasion.

Headers from Ethan Boyle and Kian Corbally came close for the visitors, keeping Kerry honest throughout the opening half. One of the last chances of the half once again fell to Amechi. He hit a low driving shot at Moody who saved well.

Continued below…

.

The rebound fell to Kelliher whose shot was deflected behind for a corner. So the sides went in scoreless at the break, leaving supporters scratching their heads as to how nobody managed to find the breakthrough in the opening 45.

But fans didn’t have long to wait for the opening goal of the night. McCarthy was dispossessed in the middle of the park allowing Mickie Rowe time to look up.

He played a neat pass down the wing to Oluwa who used all his pace to shrug off Kos and score a well-worked goal for the side pushing for a playoff spot. O’Sullivan got down well but could do nothing in a one-on-one situation.

But Kerry responded well to going one behind. Amechi came close with a speculative effort from 30 yards. Moody was at full stretch but the ball agonisingly went just to the wrong side of the far post. In an end-to-end encounter, Ethan Boyle came close moments later, O’Sullivan gathering his tame effort at the near post.

It’s hard to know how Kerry didn’t equalise in the 60th minute. Some pinball in the box and last-gasp defending from Wexford as they somehow managed to keep the ball out of the net.

The referee waved away any potential handball calls from the Kerry players, booking Kevin Williams in the process for his appeals.

Just 10 minutes later, William’s was heading for an early shower as a tangle in the middle of the park with Oluwa saw the right back pick up a second yellow. An uphill task for Kerry to salvage a point with 20 minutes to go.

But to be fair to the Kingdom, they looked the most likely to score following the red card. Kelliher came close on the 75th minute, his shot was dragged just wide of the post while 3 minutes later, Okwute’s shot across goal just needed someone to tap it home at the back post.

A mix up at the back between Andy Spain and Aaron O’Sullivan led to Dobbs being in one-on-one but the Wexford attacker dragged his effort just wide of the mark.

Up the other end, Daniel Okwute did well to find himself in a one-on-one situation of his own but Moody did really well to save with his outstretched legs.

As the 4th Official indicated 7 additional minutes, hopes of a result were beginning to fade for the home faithful. But cometh the hour, cometh the man. Okwute found himself in possession on the left-hand side and his low cross was belted home by Ryan Kelliher, the Killarney man netting his 4th goal in 3 games for Kerry.

So a dramatic end sees Kerry share the spoils with 10 men against a Wexford side who left Mounthawk Park thinking ‘what if’.

The second of two Thursday night fixtures in 2024 sees the Kingdom make the long journey to the North West to take on Finn Harps in county Donegal, with kick-off at 19:45.

KERRY FC: Aaron O’Sullivan, Kevin Williams, Andy Spain, Ethan Kos, Seán O’Connell, Ronan Teahan, Dáire McCarthy, Seán McGrath, Nathan Gleeson, Ryan Kelliher, Kennedy Amechi Subs: Daniel Okwute for N Gleeson, 60, Samuel Aladesansui for S McGrath, 77, Cian Brosnan for S O’Connell, 83

Know Your Rights: Support For Carers

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Ciara O’Gorman, Development Manager with South Munster Citizens Information Service outlines the supports currently available for carers.

“People providing care for family members often are so busy with their caring responsibilities that they don’t always have time to look at what supports are available to them. Some people don’t even think of themselves as carers, as they consider their work as part of an unspoken promise to be there for loved ones when they need them.

“Today I hope to give people a quick overview of what is available for carers so that they can get in contact with their local Citizens Information Centre to get more details.”

The two main social welfare payments for carers providing full-time care are Carer’s Allowance and Carer’s Benefit. You may also qualify for an annual Carer’s Support Grant.

Continued below…

.

Carer’s Benefit

Carer’s Benefit is a short-term payment paid for up to 2 years to people who give up employment to care on a full-time basis for someone who requires full-time care and attention.

It is PRSI based and you have to have a certain number of PRSI contributions paid. People who are self-employed and paying a Class S PRSI contribution will not qualify.

Carer’s Allowance

On the other hand, Carer’s Allowance is a payment for people who are caring on a full-time basis for someone who requires full-time care and attention and will require it for at least 12 months.

You must satisfy a means test and the habitual residency condition to qualify for Carer’s Allowance.

“To claim either payment, you must complete an application form and submit to DSP. It is important that you put in detailed information in relation to the level of care that you are providing to support your application.  If you need a hand filling out the form, please call your local CIC where staff will be happy to help.”

Continued below…

.

Full Time Care

A person is seen as needing full-time care when they need continual supervision to avoid danger to themselves or they need continual supervision and frequent assistance throughout the day with normal bodily functions.

Ciara elaborates “For example, help to walk and get about, eat or drink, get washed or dressed. The Department of Social Protection will decide if the person needs full-time care and their decision will be based on the information that the carer provides on the application form.”

The person being cared for must have their doctor complete, sign and stamp the Medical Report which is part of the Carer’s Benefit and Carer’s Allowance application form.

“This Medical Report is not needed if the person being cared for is a child who is getting Domiciliary Care Allowance” advises Ciara and the carer or the person needing care must not be living in a hospital or institution.

However, you can continue to be seen as providing full-time care if you or the person being cared for is having medical or other treatment in a hospital or institution for not longer than 13 weeks.

“The time spent providing care must not be less than 35 hours per week and if you are away, you must be able to arrange full-time care for the person you care for.”

Carer’s Leave

You do not have to give up your job if you are applying for Carer’s Benefit.  Carer’s leave allows employees to leave work temporarily or reduce their hours to provide full-time care and attention for someone who needs it.

You can take Carer’s Leave for a minimum of 13 weeks and up to a maximum of 104 weeks. Carer’s Leave from employment is unpaid but your job will be kept open for when you return.

“However to get carer’s leave, you must have worked for your employer for 12 months without a break in employment” warns Ciara.

Employers are entitled to at least 6 weeks written notice from the employee of the intention to take Carer’s Leave.  The person you will be caring for must need full-time care and attention. A deciding officer of the DSP will decide whether they need this care after checking with their GP.

If you have a complaint or dispute with your employer over carer’s leave, you should raise it with your employer first. If you cannot resolve the issue directly with your employer, you can make a formal complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).

Working Whilst Caring

“We are often asked if a carer can do any paid work while on Carer’s Benefit or Carer’s Allowance?” says Ciara.  “You can be employed, self-employed, in training or in education outside the home for up to a maximum of 18.5 hours per week.

If on Carer’s Benefit, the maximum amount you can earn is €350 per week after tax, PRSI & Union dues are deducted.

Changes to Carer’s Allowance in 2024

From June 2024, the weekly income disregard for Carer’s Allowance will increase to €450 for a single person and €900 for a couple.

If you currently get a reduced rate of Carer’s Allowance due to your means, your payment may increase from 6 June 2024. Your payment will be automatically adjusted to reflect the new income disregard, so you don’t need to re-apply.

The Means Test for Carer’s Allowance?

First of all, like Carer’s Benefit, you must be providing full-time care and attention to a person who requires that level of care. In addition however, you must be habitually resident in the State and pass a means test. In certain circumstances you may be eligible for Half Rate Carer’s Allowance

The main sources of income included in the means test for Carer’s Allowance are any cash income and capital income – this includes savings, investments, shares or any property you have (but not your own home).

The first €50,000 of your capital is not taken into account, or €100,000 if you’re in a couple. Any payment from the Department of Social Protection is not included in the means test.

Also, you can get up to €14,000 per year for renting out a room in your own home without it affecting your payment.  Citizens Information staff can help you work out how the means test would apply in your individual situation

Carer’s Benefit is €249 per week if caring for one person and €373.50 if caring for two people.  Carer’s Allowance is €248 per week if caring for one person and €372, if caring for two people.  You can also get a child increase if you have a qualified child and the Carer’s Allowance goes to a higher rate when you are aged over 66.

Half-Rate Carer’s Allowance

If you are in one of the following situations you may qualify for half-rate Carer’s Allowance:

• Already getting Carer’s Allowance but also meet the qualifying criteria for another social welfare payment
• Changed from another social welfare payment to get Carer’s Allowance
• Caring for someone and being claimed for by a spouse, civil partner or cohabitant
• Getting a social welfare payment other than Carer’s Allowance and caring for someone.

Annual Carer’s Support Grant

The Carer’s Support Grant is paid to carers once a year by the Department of Social Protection (DSP). It used to be called the Respite Care Grant. The Carer’s Support Grant is €1,850 and it is paid once a year, usually on the first Thursday in June, for each person you are caring for. It is not taxable.

You cannot be working outside the home for more than 18.5 hours or signing for Jobseeker’s Credits. “You can apply for this payment even if you are not receiving Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Benefit” and this is a key point that a lot of people are not aware of” says Ciara.

You can apply for a Carer’s Support Grant for any given year from April of that year until 31 December of the following year e.g. you can apply for the Carer’s Support Grant for 2024 at any time from April 2024 up until 31 December 2025.

Living Arrangements

“A lot of people think that you have to live with the person you are caring for but this is not the case” says Ciara.

“Non-resident care situations may require investigation by a Social Welfare Inspector before a decision can be made by the Deciding Officer.  A direct system of communication must exist between the carer’s residence and that of the care recipient and this may be a telephone or alarm-type system.  One last point to note is that the care recipient must not already be receiving full-time care and attention within his or her own residence from another person.”

Additional Supports

If you get Carer’s Allowance you may also get the Free Household Benefits Package (if you are living with the person you are caring for) and Free Travel.  If you get Carer’s Benefit or Carer’s Allowance, at full or half-rate, you are eligible for a GP visit card.

If the person that you are caring for passes away, your Carer’s Benefit payment will continue for 6 weeks following the death, while Carer’s Allowance continues for 12 weeks.

Families Invited To Watch Kerry v Derry On Big Screen In The Town Park

.

WHILE most Kerry fans in town are unlikely to make their way to Dublin on Sunday to watch the big game, an alternative for families is a trip to the Town Park during Féile na mBláth.

The Festival organisers are putting a big screen in the Kerry Group Marquee and invite families to come down to cheer on the green and gold against Derry in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Quarter Finals.

There’ll be loads of seating available and with vendors right outside the tent you can enjoy plenty  of food and drink while watching the big game which starts at 3.15pm.
