THERE was a fantastic show of community support at Austin Stacks GAA Club on Thursday evening to join a local woman for the final leg of her 100k in June fundraiser.
Lauren Barrett is a member of the ladies club in Stacks and she took on the challenge in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland, ending up turning their Connolly Park headquarters pink on the night.
The 22 year old was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in June 2021. She has had extensive treatment over the past year and thankfully is now cancer-free. Lauren was made an ambassador for Breast Cancer Ireland’s ‘100km in 30 Days’ to raise awareness and funds for the cause.

“Austin Stacks ladies club members have been doing the challenge as well as people I work with out in Horgan’s Centra in Ardfert, family and friends. I wasn’t by myself in this,” said Lauren.
Through her efforts and generous donations, Lauren has raised over €13,000 so far.
“I’m delighted, I didn’t think I would raise this much. The money will be put to good use for a cause close to my heart,” she added.
Her challenge brought the whole club together last night with men’s, ladies and juvenile club members joining Lauren and family for the final 1k run/walk around the grounds.
“She’s a very popular member of the ladies club and the Barrett family are very much loved and respected here,” said Club Chairperson Shane Lynch. “This was always going to be a big event, but her interview with Ray Darcy on the radio this week really struck a chord when she told her story,” he added.
There was a raffle for the signed Kerry jersey after the run and the winner was Canice Walsh.
Words of thanks were given by Lauren herself, by Melissa Maguire the Ladies Chairperson and by Shane Lynch. A presentation was also made to Lauren by the Austin Stacks Club of a signed pink top, flowers and crystal vase.
