Roger Harty: My Inner Sat-Nav

rsz_roger_hartyMODERN technology has had a ying/yang effect on our world.

On the one hand it has brought great advances to our lives. For instance you can settle down with a hot cup of tea in less than three minutes, whereas on the other hand, with all the latest gadgets for communication, less and less people are taking time to actually talk to each other.

Whether we like it or not, it is here to stay and the best advice I can give is to use it with awareness.

Not wanting to be a complete killjoy, one piece of modern technology that intrigues me is the Sat-Nav – a device that allows us to access and track our location and indeed others, anywhere in the world using satellite communication. What a wonderful device.

Just think about the joy and peace of mind it can bring to travel, especially car travel. I used to love travelling to the South of France by car. Now I can set this gadget in Tralee that will guide all the way to the city – and indeed very house – that I used to visit in Carcassonne.

It will guide me to the ferry in Rosslare, tell me where to go when I reach Cherbourg, navigate me though all the complicated roundabouts so that all I have to do is enjoy the scenery in all locations. It is a long trip (about 1,000) km so in order not to be wrecked on arrival and I usually divide into three sections.

The first section involved Brittany, where one can enjoy the beautiful scenery and taste the local delicacies like les crepes, next on to The Loire region with all it’s wonderful chateaux and local delicacies like canard, and finally down deep south where the sun was always shining, with fields of sunflowers and of course the constant surround of vineyards.

I love to explore the ancient city of Rocamadour and of course the famous pottery city of Limoges.

Now with my Sat-Nav I can take in far more as it takes all the worry out of travel and it will tell me about all the local campsites, points of interest and of course local restaurants – truly a wonderful device that allows me to enjoy my journey to its fullest with the knowledge that my destination is only a press of a button away.

In life I have discovered that we have a similar type of Sat-Nav. It has many names – for example, ‘gut instinct’, ‘inner child’, ‘inner wisdom’, ‘guiding light’, in fact some people refer to it as their ‘Guardian Angel’.

Just like the high tech Sat–Nav ,it requires time and attention to get it working properly. It also requires one major ingredient i.e. trust (faith).

Trust that is always there and readily accessible especially in times of difficulty.

Trust that it will guide you in the right direction (even when your mind tells you the opposite) – simply enjoy the journey.

How do we access it? Give it time and attention. Perhaps the best way that I can suggest is to spend some time in silent meditation – in this way we allow the connection to happen.

This is what Jesus meant when He said – “Be Still and know that I Am God”.

All we have to do is follow that message, trust and believe in that message, knowing that it will deliver for you.

It will make our journey through life more joyous and worry free so that we can enjoy the sites on our journey all the more. What peace of mind and what more could you ask for ?

Many people have discovered this for themselves and that is why mindfulness has taken off on such a Richter-scale level all over the world.

The good news is that even though my title was ‘My Inner Sat-Nav’, there is nothing special about me – everybody has access to their own inner Sat Nav – all you have to do is believe and act on the process and the results will come.

Next week I am going to write about -It’s Ok not to be Ok
