Shop Thefts Up, Public Order Offences Down In Latest Kerry Crime Figures

THERE has been a significant increase in thefts from shops offences, while public order offences decreased in Kerry in the first nine months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2019.

The crime figures for the Kerry Division were revealed by Chief Superintendent of the Kerry Garda Division, Padraic Powell, at the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee in Killarney on Friday afternoon.

It showed that Property Crime was up 14% so far this year on the pre-COVID period of Jan-Sept 2019. Although burglaries and theft from vehicles were down 53% (194 to 91) and 29% (95 to 67) respectively, theft from shop incidents were up 63% (389 to 636). Theft of vehicles though were down by 15% (27 to 23).

Assaults causing harm were up 5% (104 to 109) while minor assaults were down 2% (369 down to 360).

Public order offences were down 29% (535 to 378) and drunkenness offences down 19% (454 to 369). There was no change in the number of arson offences (15) while criminal damage offences were up 5% from 277 to 291.

Possession of drugs for sale or supply incidents were up 20% (60 to 75), Possession of drugs for personal use incidents were down 33% (441 to 296). Possession of offensive weapons (not firearms) incidents were up 8% (48 to 52).
