Choir From Huddersfield To Perform Three Concerts This Weekend

A CHOIR from England is returning to Tralee to perform three concerts this weekend with proceeds going to Down Syndrome Kerry.

The Gledholt Male Voice Choir from Huddersfield in Yorkshire last visited Tralee in May 2019, and were so impressed with the warm welcome that they received that a return visit has been arranged.

The choir will be performing three concerts in total, raising much needed funds for Down Syndrome Kerry. The first concert, which will be an informal evening of song and music, will take place at The Ashe Hotel in Tralee at 7.30pm on Friday May 20th.

On Saturday May 21st the choir will be singing with the Kerry Choral Union in St. John’s Church of Ireland church on Ashe Street Tralee at 7.30pm.

Ardfert Cathedral is the venue for the third concert, which will be an open-air performance, on Sunday May 22nd at 2.30pm, followed by refreshments in Ardfert Community Centre.

This promises to be a fabulous and unique event in the awe-inspiring surroundings of the 12th Century Cathedral.

Tickets at €10 for each concert are available at the 321 Shop at 11 High Street, Tralee. Tickets can also be booked on Eventbrite.ie. They will also be available on the door.

‘Oh Holy Night’ To Kick Off Christmas For Many In St John’s

A CHRISTMAS treat not to be missed is the ‘O Holy Night’ choral concert on in St John’s The Baptist Church, this Sunday at 7:30pm.

The concert is eagerly anticipated each year and attracts up to 600 people.

Performing on the night will be soloist, Miriam Murphy, and The Kerry Choral Union who will be accompanied by their junior choir.

Miriam Murphy from Tralee, is one of the foremost sopranos in the country. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London, she has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and won awards across Europe for her singing talent.

“For a lot of people, the singing of ‘Oh Holy Night’ by Miriam Murphy marks the start of the Christmas season,” said Chairman of The Kerry Choral Union, Bill Corcoran.

This is Kerry Choral Union’s biggest event of the year and for a considerable number of years has been held in St John’s on Castle Street. Primarily, the concert will consist of Christmas carols.

“There has been a very good response from previous years and we will be expecting a huge crowd again next year,” said Bill.

Choirs Of Kerry To Gather For Concert In St Brendan’s Church

At the launch of the ‘World Mental Health Choral Extravaganza’ were, Our Lady and St Brendan’s parish priest Fr Padraig Walsh, representatives from Jigsaw Kerry, Choir Members from St John’s Gregorian Choir and Opus 96 Chamber Choir.

OPUS’96 Chamber Choir and Our Lady and St Brendan’s church will host the biggest choral concert ever seen in Kerry this Sunday October 12, at 8pm.

Friday is ‘World Mental Health Day’ and to celebrate this, two days later, 13 choirs from all over Kerry will come together to sing their hearts out and promote the positive mental health benefits that being part of a choir brings.

The Tralee area based choirs taking part along with several others from around the county are; Opus’96 Chamber Choir, St John’s Tralee Gregorian Choir, Kerry Chamber Choir, Our Lady and St Brendan’s Parish Choir, Ardfert Singers Ladies Choir and Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School Choir.

Compére for the evening will be Radio Kerry’s, Weeshie Fogarty. There is no cover charge, but it is hoped to get lots of donations with all proceeds going to JIGSAW/Headstrong (Kerry Branch).

The Jigsaw service provides a safe and confidential space where young people can access a wide range of mental health supports for free and is located at Unit A1, Edward Court, Tralee, Co Kerry.

The Jigsaw service works with young people aged from 12-25. Its main aim is to enable young people to access the most appropriate services in as seamless a way as possible, whatever their level of need.

The Jigsaw Programme was designed by Headstrong and its panel of youth advisors and is an evidence based, integrated service, designed to strengthen a community’s capacity to support young people’s mental health. It works on a partnership model of pulling together and aligning all existing resources and expertise in any given community.
