New Kerry Senior Club Championship Format Agreed

.
Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahillys are both involved in the club championship in April.

A SPECIAL county board meeting was held las night where the format for this year’s Kerry senior football club championship was agreed.

There will be two groups of four teams with the groups decided on an open draw basis, no seedings.

Teams will play each other once on a home, away and neutral venue basis and the top team in each group will contest this year’s final.

Continued below…

.

The bottom team in each group will play a relegation decider later in the year – after senior county championship finalists are known.

In the event of a tie between teams,  the head to head between those teams will be the deciding issue – in the event of that game having been a draw score difference will apply.

Games will commence on 1st April with neutral venue  games being played initially with consecutive games on 8th & 15th with final on 29th – this only applies if Kerry don’t reach the Allianz National League Final.

If Kerry reach the league decider, games will commence on 8th April with consecutive games on 15th & 22nd and final on first week end in May. The fixtures committee will endeavour to play double headers where possible.

AUSTIN STACKS manager Stephen Stack was very impressed with the composure and physicality of his side in their victory over Dr Crokes in the Castleisland Mart Senior Club Championship Final on Saturday in Fitzgerald Stadium.

“I’m just really proud of the lads I thought they battled and battled and they were brave,” said a very pleased Stephen Stack, just after witnessing Kieran Donaghy and Wayne Guthrie lift the cup for The Rock.

“They put tackles in and they turned over the ball, they were physical. Absolutely everything we asked them to do today they did in spades,” said Stack.

“We just wanted to win a club championship, we had not won it in a long time. The fact it was Crokes added that little bit of motivation for us and again it was on in Killarney which was an extra disadvantage there. We’ve talked about it all year – the one thing we wanted is that if we got into a tight situation we would try to show as much composure as we possibly could and I think we did that,” said Stack.

“We finished the game strong mentally and physically and I think we made a lot of very good decisions late in the game that got us over the line,” he said.

Giving a thunderous display against Crokes, one player that rolled back the years was Daniel Bohan.

“Himself [Bohan] and Jack Morgan were absolutely tremendous for us today, the timing of their runs, we knew we had pace in the half back line. We played ‘Bo’ today as a sweeper, we wouldn’t do that everyday but it worked for us today. We felt we needed to try and prevent Crokes from goal opportunities and I think largely we did that today. I thought there was a very good shape to what we were doing and I think we counter attacked very well,” he continued.

Focus now turns to Austin Stacks’ county championship quarter-final against Kenmare District in Fitzgerald Stadium in two weeks time.

“It will be a very different game. We played Templenoe who account for maybe half of that Kenmare District team. We played them down in Templenoe last weekend and I have to say if there was anything that brought us up to pace today it was that game, because it was an absolute cracker. It was a great game. I’m conscious that we had our full team that day and that was half the Kenmare District team,” he said.

In that Division 1 County League game, Austin Stacks just squeezed passed Templenoe by a point 4-10 to 3-12.

“I said to the lads last night, if we win tomorrow, do we think we are going to win the county championship? The answer is absolutely not and if we lose do we think we’re going to lose it [county championship]? Of course the answer is not as well. Kieran [Donaghy] repeated that out on the pitch and I think that is an important point.”

“This game is over now, we’ll celebrate tonight and back again working tomorrow. Then we’ll be facing in towards Kenmare District in three weeks time and that is the complete focus of our attention going forward,” said the Rockies boss.

SENIOR championship status is on the line for both these clubs when the face off in Farranfore on Sunday.

The loser will play Kilcummin, who lost to Rathmore in the other relegation play-off to the decide who plays senior football in 2017.

Should this be O’Rahillys fate, a good County Championship run would will them from the ignominy of intermediate level competition next year.

A lacklustre performance against Legion has the new management team of Micheal Quirke and Morgan Nix  facing into a relegation battle.

David Moran and Barry John Keane will be once again at the side’s disposal along with Tommy Walsh who has generated many column inches over the last few days following his shock departure from the Kerry senior panel.

Walsh can now fully focus his efforts on his club, free from the distraction of inter-county pressure, which can only be a good thing in Strand Road.

However, the Blues will be without the services of the club’s 2015 player of the year, Con Barrett, who has recently undergone surgery on his shoulder and will be out for at least a few months more.

They face a Milltown/Castlemaine side who were knocked out of last year’s County Championship by O’Rahillys who played 45 minutes with 14 men and won (0-20 to 1-14)

Austin Stacks put the Mid Kerry club in this position by beating them in the quarter-finals (0-14 to 0-9).

Ever a tough nut to crack, Milltown/Castlemaine beat The Rock last year in a relegation play off that sent the 2014 Munster Champions in danger of dropping to intermediate level (only to survive at the expense of Laune Rangers).

So The Blues are very much aware that if Milltown get their tails up against you, they’ll be no pushover. Still the Tralee side has the fire power that should steer them away from relegation danger.

THE draws for the Castleisland Mart Club Championship took place last night at the County Committee meeting held in Austin Stack Park.

Recent championship clashes would suggest Kerins O’Rahilly’s would have preferred to avoid Legion.

The Killarney side have knocked O’Rahilly’s out of the 2015 Senior Championship and the two previous years of the club championship.

Austin Stacks are also up against a team they’ll be very familiar with.

Milltown/Castlemaine were the side that unexpectedly dumped The Rock into a three way Senior Championship Relegation Play-off last December.

Defending champions, Dingle, will face Rathmore.

In the Intermediate championship, John Mitchels, have been drawn against Spa, who they defeated on Sunday after two titanic battles to claim Division 1 Promotion.

Ardfert have a difficult test against Munster champs, St Mary’s. But with home advantage, Ardfert, will be looking to upset the south Kerrymen.

In the Junior grade, Ballymac host Cordal, St Pats go to Duagh and Na Gaeil play Cromane on home soil.

The draws were made by Joe Wallace under the Supervision of the County Committee members

Castleisland Mart Senior Club Championship Semi Final

Dingle 3-10
Austin Stacks 0-11

AUSTIN STACKS crashed out of the club championship for the second year in a row at the hands of Dingle.

A goal from Paul Geaney with the last kick of the first half set the men from the west up for the second where they would be aided by the breeze.

Two further goals, from midfielder Barry O’Sullivan and once again from Geaney, would seal the deal for Dingle who will now go on to play Dr Crokes in the final.

Austin Stacks were much the better side in the first 15 minutes of the match and led by five points at one stage. Corner forward, David Mannix was on fire in this period, notching up four scores and looking dangerous.

With Stacks in the lead by four and the first period drawing to a close, Dingle forward Matthew Flaherty made a run at the square. His attempted shot was blocked and fell to Paul Geaney, who showed the aerial ability which bagged him a goal in the All-Ireland Final. The inter-county star turned to knock it under Jonathan Conway in goal.

With that, the sides went at the break Stacks 0-7 Dingle 1-3.

Building on that momentum, Dingle came flying out of the traps the second half. After two quick-fire points, they found themselves four points in front three minutes into the half when Paul Geaney hit the net once more. It was a lead they would never relinquish.

For the remainder of the game, Stacks tried to eat into that lead, but never got close, in fact they would only kick two points from play the entire half.

This youthful Dingle side were looking fitter and faster, Kerry minor, Mark O’Connor was entrusted with keeping an eye on Donaghy and did a fine job, although quality ball was at a premium for the 2014 All-Star.

With 13 minutes left, Dingle scored their third goal to stretch the lead out to seven points. This time it was Kerry minor from last year, Barry  O’Sullivan, doing the damage.

It was  a disappointing display by the Rock, but the defeat to Dingle last year in the club championship proved to be a turning point for a side that went on to win the county championship.

A lot of soul searching will come after a nine point defeat.

Who knows? It could be just what they needed.

THE year 2014 will live long in the memory in Connolly Park.

County and Munster titles and a county league which was only added last week, made it truly a vintage year.

However, it could have been a perfect year, but for one fly in the ointment.

Last year, there was one competition Austin Stacks didn’t win and one team that beat them in that competition. This Sunday, they face that team, in that same competition.

Continued below…

Yes, back in May last year, Dingle blitzed a Kieran Donaghy-less Austin Stacks with four goals, to knock them out of the club championship by a scoreline of 4-7 to 1-10.

That was the sole defeat the Rock suffered in 2014.

The two sides would face each other once more, this time in the county championship semi-final, but on this occasion Kieran Donaghy was back in the side. Star gave a man of the match performance and the Stacks cruised to a seven-point victory.

The departures, of Greg Horan, Wayne Guthrie, Pa McCarthy and Darragh O’Brien to the States have been a set back to the Rock.

Stacks will be without the services of Shane Guthrie, who gave a fine display against Crokes – he will be on soccer duties with Tralee Dynamos, for their Munster Junior Cup final.

They can also add Daniel Bohane (broken collar-bone) to their list of absentees, an injury putting him out for another 11 weeks.

However, since the departure of those key men to America, Shane Carroll has taken on extra responsibility in the team. He gave a grandstand performance in the Crokes game, kicking six points, giving a man of the match performance.

The opponents, Dingle, really are the coming side in Kerry football. So much so, that it will be surprising if the young talent they’ve got coming through recently, doesn’t harvest them a county title in the next few years.

Along with back to back Hogan Cup titles for Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, the All-Ireland winning Kerry minor team featured four Dingle men in the starting lineup and three more on the bench.

One of those men, Matthew Flaherty, scored 1-3 in last year’s fixture. He is as adept from corner back to corner forward. On Sunday he will cover every blade of grass and be a real live wire.

Mark O’Connor gave an incredible performance for the Kerry minors on Wednesday night against Cork and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make an impression on the game despite his age.

He had an awful time last year going up against Donaghy, so it will be interesting if they pin him on Donaghy again.

O’Connor’s midfield partner with the Kerry minors last year, Barry O’Sullivan, was on the losing side against Stacks in the county championship, but had fantastic duel with William Kirby in midfield that day.

Added to the abundance of promising young talent, the Rock will have to contend with Paul Geaney who, on his day at this level, can be unplayable. Though he does seem to keep his powder dry for when he’s wearing green and gold.

Looking at this game, Austin Stacks are a real unit. Stephen Stack has a team working together and on the same wavelength, they are dogged defenders and resolute right to the final whistle.

Last year, Dingle really did not cope well at all with the high ball going into Donaghy (who does?).

They decided to just leave one man on him, it remains to be seen if they’ll do that again. One thing is for sure – the plan will stay the same for Stacks.

Verdict – Austin Stacks by 3 points

Kerins O’Rahilly’s 1-13 – 1-14 Killarney Legion

kor_v_legion_13

A very disappointing evening in Strand Road for Kerins O’Rahilly’s who were knocked out of the first round of the championship to Legion for the second year in a row.

Aided by the breeze, Legion kicked seven points to O’Rahilly’s one in the final quarter of the match. Indeed, with a minute remaining it was Strand Road who were leading with a point only to be undone by two late, late points.

It was a cagey start to the game – taking seven minutes for the first score to be registered.

After some tit for tat scoring the game was poised 0-4 to 0-2 after 20 minutes. A big moment came in the 18th minute, when Cormac Coffey missed a gilt-edged goal chance.

With such a strong wind advantage, O’Rahilly’s, really were not making it count. That was until five minutes to go in the half when they hit over three in a row, Tommy Walsh, Jack Savage and Barry John Keane the scorers.

The half ending 0-9 to 0-5 to the blues.

At the resumption of the second half, James O’Donoghue made his first appearance of the year. He had a massive bearing on the match scoring 0-4.

At the start of the half, Legion scored a goal courtesy of Kerry U21, Conor Keane. It wasn’t long though before O’Rahilly’s had one of their own, Barry John Keane with a tremendous finish to put his side back in the driver’s seat.

Then, the Legion fightback came with the Killarney side bossing the final quarter of the game. Clawing back points bit by bit, they found themselves a point behind with a minute to go.

In a match where inter-county stars shone, it was two Legion substitutes who would win the day. First, Kevin Slattery with the equaliser and then with virtually the last kick of the game, Chris Davies nailed the winner to sink the hearts of the home team and followers.

  Intermediate Club Championship

John Mitchels 1-10 – 1-6 Finuge

John Mitchels continued their winning streak in league in championship so far this year by dispatching Finuge in Ballyseedy on Saturday evening.

Mitchels set themselves up for victory after a decent first half display when playing with a strong breeze.  Jonathan O’Halloran poked in an opportunists goal in the opening period giving Mitchels a cushion of 6 points going in at the break with the score 1-6 to 0-3.

Playing against the breeze for the second half did not deter Mitchels from getting a couple of scores early on from Mike Deane to really nail down a marker.

The game was not over yet though with the North Kerry men storming back at Mitchels and scoring 1-3 without reply. Sean Moloney settled things down however by tapping over two points in a row to quell any Finuge efforts.

In the next round of the intermediate club championship, The Mitchels now play An Ghaeltacht at home this Sunday at 2pm.

Na Gaeil, who have been somewhat of a bogie team for Churchill, spoiled a glorious day for the home side who officially opened their new pitch on Sunday.

There was hardly a more picturesque fixture in Irish sport this Sunday than the one played on Churchill’s new grounds on Sunday. With Sliabh Mish, Brandon and Barrow on the horizon it was a perfect day for football.

The story of the first half can be defined by two scoring bursts between both sides. With the scores poised at 0-4 apiece, Na Gaeil upped it up a gear or two.

Following on from a charging fisted point by Jack Barry, Na Gaeil hit the net courtesy of David Culloty. Churchill were soon back at them with a goal of their own, Ger McCarthy finishing the ball to the net.

Na Gaeil then also responded with a point, but McCarthy was back at them again with a soccer style finish for his second goal. After an exciting finish to the half, the scores were 2-6 to 1-7 to Churchill.

Churchill will be very disappointed that they only scored two points in the entire second half with this bad finishing cost them dearly on the day.

After Churchill stretched the margin to three points right at the start of the half, it was Na Gaeil who began to find their form and clawed their way back.

With five minutes left on the clock, Na Gaeil’s Darragh Carmody got the decisive score of the match to edge his side a point in front which would be enough.

In the next round of the junior club championship, Na Gaeil, travel to face Templenoe this Sunday at 2pm.

Ballymacelligott 0-19 – 2-10 Ballyduff

Ballymacelligott reached the quarter final of the Junior Championship following a three point victory over Ballyduff on Sunday.

The win was forged from a sharp shooting forward line with all of the starting forwards chipping in with scores.

At the end of the first quarter the sides were level with 5 points apiece, the Ballymac scores coming from Aidan Breen (2), Padraig McCarthy, Shane O Reilly and Luke Sweeney with Jack Goulding (2) Barry O Grady (2) and JP Leahy replying for Ballyduff.

Further points by Shane O Reilly and Aidan Breen saw Ballymac lead but Ballyduff hit back with an excellent individual goal from Jack Goulding.

Three further points by Padraig McCarthy, Vincent Horan and Luke Sweeney saw the half time score, Ballymac 0 – 10 Ballyduff 1 – 5.

Two early Padraig McCarthy frees extended the home side’s lead but the excellent Barry O Grady kept the North Kerry lads in touch with some excellent point taking.

Ballymac goalkeeper, Paudie O Connor brought off a tremendous save mid-way through this half.

Points from Vincent Horan, Aidan Breen and Shane O Reilly put Ballymac in the lead by 3 pints with five minutes remaining, then a superbly taken Ballduff goal by Padraig Boyle leveled it up and at this stage the game was in the melting pot.

But the home side finished the stronger with points by Padraig McCarthy, Luke Sweeney and Daniel O Shea to progress in the competition.

In the next round of the junior club championship, Ballymac face a tough test away against division one side Glenbeigh-Glencar on Sunday at 2pm.

St Pats 4-05 – 3-14 Templenoe

For the second year in a row, St Pats made the long trip south to Templenoe for the first round of the  junior championship.

On a perfect day for football St Pats started the game brightly and played their best stuff in the opening third of the game.

After Gary ‘Lar’ Savage was pulled down and St Pats were awarded a penalty the scores were 2-3 to 0-3 to the Blennerville side with twenty minutes on the clock.

Gary ‘Lar’ Savage added a score minutes later and it seemed, there was no stopping this St Pats side.

Templenoe had other ideas though and upped their game, Killian Spillane closed the gap with a goal in the 22nd minute and it was game on again.

Templenoe pressed forward at every opportunity and added further points..

With five minutes remaining in the half, St Pats were afforded a lifeline when Willie Hurley was taken to the ground. A penalty was awarded and Kieran Hurley made no mistake from the spot to leave the score at the break 3-4 to 2-6, to St Pats.

Templenoe started the second half in determined fashion and were level after 4 minutes. With 15 minutes remaining, St Pats, netted their fourth goal, the scores now 4-04 to 3-09 with Templenoe in front by two.

In the final quarter, Templenoe outscored St Pats, by six points to one. The South Kerry’s sides drive to see out the game being the deciding factor.
