Stephen Does His Country And Tralee Proud At Euro Transplant And Dialysis Games

A TRALEE man has returned from European Transplant & Dialysis Championships in Cagliari, Sardinia after narrowly missing out on the medals.

Stephen Byrne from Tralee put in great performances in his events at his second European Games just missing out on Bronze in two of them.

In the 5km Mini Marathon which was held on the first day of the week-long games, he was placed in forth position in the 50-59 year age category narrowly missing out on a Bronze by just three seconds and achieving his personal best time.

He also came close to winning Bronze in his Bowling event later in the week. He also competed in Petanque.  After his first event, the 5km, Stephen said, “I have to thank my donor, I wouldn’t be here without them. A big thanks to my club in Tralee, Born to Run and Tralee Park Run”.

It has been a triumphant week for Transplant Team Ireland at the 10th European Transplant & Dialysis Championships in Cagliari as they won a staggering 54 medals including 11 Gold, 20 silver, 23 Bronze.

A large turnout of family friends and supporters are expected to turn out to meet the team when they come through the Arrivals’ Hall at Dublin airport’s Terminal One  on Sunday.

Twenty three members of Team Ireland, including 10 women and 13 men, who range in age from 31 to 80, competed in intense heat and against strong competition this week on the sun drenched picturesque Italian island of Sardinia.

The positive spirit of the Irish shone through among the 25 competing nations.   At the Games athletes acknowledged their gratitude to their donors. The Games are a celebration of life and showcase the value of sport and regular physical activity for people on dialysis and transplant recipients.

KIDNEY transplant recipient Stephen Byrne from Tralee will travel to Cagliari, Sardinia with 23 other members of Transplant Team Ireland next week to represent Ireland at the 10th European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships which will take place from 17th – 24th June.

Stephen will be joined on the team by another Kerry-based civil servant and kidney transplant recipient Emma O’Sullivan who works in Listowel and lives with her husband and young son in Glin, Co Limerick.

Stephen is married with two children, Jennifer (20) and Ethan (16). He lives in Tralee and works in Dept. of Justice in Killarney where he is very involved with the Social Club & Golf Society.

He enjoys Formula 1 and has attended 10 Grand Prix. Stephen started running a few months after commencing dialysis in 2013 and completed his first half marathon while on dialysis.

Stephen regularly takes part in his local parkrun with Transplant Team Ireland as his registered club.

“This is my second time being part of Transplant Team Ireland, as I participated in the games in Finland in 2016.  I was only 1 year transplanted at the time and to see the camaraderie, the friendships and the energy that the games created was a very positive experience for me. Attending the games is something I’m very much looking forward to. But above all it’s a way of saying Thank You to my amazing donor and in the process, raising awareness of Organ Donation.”

He will be competing in the following sports, in the 50-59 age category:

• 10 Pin Bowling (Doubles)
• 10 Pin Bowling (Singles)
• Petanque (Doubles)
• Petanque (Singles)
• Mini Marathon 5km

Over 25 countries and 470 participants are expected to participate in the 10th European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships in June.

The current panel of Transplant Team Ireland comprises 24 athletes, 10 women and 14 men, ranging in age from 31 to 80, and includes 5 liver transplant recipients, 16 kidney transplant recipients and three dialysis patients including two women who underwent combined kidney/pancreas transplants but, while they await another kidney transplant, their pancreas transplants are still functioning.

The Irish Team has enjoyed great success at other European Championships over the past number of years.

At the previous European Championships which were held in Vantaa, Finland, in 2016, the Irish team’s final medal tally was a staggering 21 Gold, 19 Silver and 29 Bronze.  This placed Ireland’s 28 strong team in fifth position on the medals table with host country Finland, and a much larger team of 96 athletes, taking top position out of 24 competing countries.

The European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships are a celebration of life and showcase the value of sport and regular physical activity for people on dialysis and transplant recipients.

The Games are open to all kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, bone marrow transplant recipients as well as dialysis patients. The multi-sport event includes athletics, badminton, cycling, darts, golf, mini marathon, petanque, swimming, table tennis, tennis, ten pin bowling, virtual triathlon and the hosts have also added archery and surf-casting. Athletes are divided into six age groups (18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+)

TRALEE man Stephen Byrne may not have been among the medals but he enjoyed taking part in the European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships in Vantaa, Finland.

Stephen Byrne from Ballyrickard took part in a 200m race in an older age category on Saturday and crossed the finish line in 5th position. Earlier in the week Stephen, who underwent a kidney transplant in April 2015, also took part in petanque and bowling.

At this events and his race on Saturday he was cheered on by his wife Francene, daughter Jennifer (age 18) and son Ethan (14). Speaking about his Games experience he said; “It’s been a fantastic week. It’s wonderful to be fit and well enough to come here and to be able to compete just over a year after receiving a kidney transplant. I had some health setbacks since my transplant initially until it settled in a few months ago. I only started to train for the Games in April this year. I took part to honour my donor. It been brilliant to have my family here with me.”

Transplant Team Ireland reeled in more medals on the final events day at the Championships. Early on Saturday, Garda Alan Gleeson, from Listowel, along with Urologist Ron Grainger from Dublin each secured Gold in their 200m sprint events and Ron went on to win his second Gold  in the Long Jump event and then a Bronze in the the Ball Throw event. Alan had to pull out of the relay race event to attend his dialysis treatment.

On Friday, Alan  won a Gold medal in the 100m sprint and a Silver in the Long jump event before events were postponed due to heavy rainfall.

Alan, who is stationed as a Garda in Dublin, after winning Gold in his 200m sprint race said, “I’m delighted to have won this medal. The hard work has paid off. I’ve been practicing at ALSAA Sports Complex and the Phoenix Park. It’s great to have a few medals to bring home to all my fantastic supporters in Ireland. I’m over the moon.”

The 28 strong Transplant Team Ireland has put in a tremendous performance at the week long games amassing a total of 21 Gold, 19 Silver and 29 Bronze medals. The team is returning home to Ireland today.

AROUND 100 people showed their support for European Transplant Games hopeful, Stephen Byrne, at a table quiz in the Ashe Hotel on Thursday night.

The Ballyrickard man is Finland-bound and was raising money to go towards the cost of competing at the European Transplant Games this month.

A father of two, Stephen, is also looking forward to his first ever European Games having undergone a kidney transplant just a year ago.

A big crowd of family and friends – including a contingent from the Born To Run Club – enjoyed a great night of questions with loads of spot prizes provided by local businesses.

Stephen is part of an Irish team of 29 athletes that includes two other Kerrymen – Alan Gleeson from Listowel and Patrick O’Connor from Killarney. The Kerry trio are participating in the dialysis category.

The 9th European Transplant & Dialysis Games will be held in Vantaa, Finland from 7th –18th July and will involve close to 500 participants from 25 countries throughout Europe.

Every athlete at the Games will either have already received a kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas or bone marrow transplant or are on dialysis. Scroll down for photos…
