SCOIL Nuachabháil and Flemby NS both received tricolours from the army to mark the 100 year commemoration of the 1916 rising next year.

Gunner Sean Murphy and Lieutenant Denis Sheahan of the Irish Army, delivered tricolurs and a copy of the proclamation of independence to pupils from both school.

Over the next number of months, members of the Defence Forces will distribute a handmade Tricolour and a copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic to more than 3,000 national schools across Ireland.

While at the schools Lt Denis Sheahan, spoke to the children about the history and importance of our national flag.

He was particularly impressed with one Flemby pupil who was the first child out of 30 schools they had visited who could tell them the name of the man who designed of the flag.

“It’s great to get out and do something we don’t normally do and see all the schools,” said Gunner Sean Murphy.

“The children are definitely prepared before we come and it’s great that they’re learning about what’s going on next year and what it means to everyone.” said Gnr Murphy

At Scoil Nuachabháil, pupils welcomed the two army men with a guard of honour with each of the 150 or so school children waving a tricolour.

The kids got a chance to quiz the two men about the army and the history of the nation. Questions ranged from “where do you keep the guns?” to “are your uniforms itchy?”

To round off the visit, the proclamation was read out followed by a rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann.

Raising the flag for Flemby was former World Mountain Running Championship winner and Ballymacelligott native, John Lenihan.

“We decided that achieving an active flag would be a great stimulus for the school,” said Paul Roche, principal of Flemby National School.

Some of the activities the tiny school adopted were, hill-walking, swimming and cycling. They also drew a running track around the grounds of the school.

One of the initiatives Flemby introduced was taking time during class hours to get pupils up and moving around the classroom.

“We found this had a very positive effect on the children, especially for the ones that need it most. Some children might have special needs or some have trouble concentrating, those activities really help those children in class,” said principal Paul Roche.

It was special for the school also that the 1991 World Mountain Running winner, John Lenihan raised the flag.

The  former world champion gave the children a motivational speech which encouraged them to achieve their goals and to stay fit and active.

WHILE people had their lunch in Ballyseedy Garden Centre n Thursday, they were also treated to some festive singing by the pupils of the small Flemby National School.

“We do carol singing every second year and the Ballyseedy Garden Centre are always very good to us and invite us over,” said Paul Roche, Principal of Flemby National School.

Flemby National School is a two teacher co-educational school, located in the parish of Ballymacelligott, about five miles from Tralee.

“Bernie Falvey, who is the owner of Ballyseedy garden centre, her father was involved in building the schoolhouse in Flemby, so there is close ties between us,” said Paul Roche.

Parents were also in attendance and snapped photos of their kids as they belted out the Christmas hits.

“We’re here to bring a bit of Christmas cheer and atmosphere. Yesterday the children were at Kerry Airport singing for people who were returning back home for Christmas,” said Paul.

“We’re a two teacher school so we have a great family atmosphere. We always try and do as much as we can together to keep that community feeling,” he said.
