Sponsored: Scot Brings Mouthwatering ‘Muerte’ To Matt The Butcher’s

.
Scot Ross of Muerte Deli & Sandwich Bar with some of his amazing sandwiches now available at his new venture located in Matt The Butcher’s on Russell Street.

SOMETHING very special is arriving to Matt The Butcher on Russell Street this week with the opening of Muerte Deli and Sandwich Bar.

From this Thursday, April 6, Scot Ross will be making and serving up a range of delicious sandwiches like BLTs, chili dogs, pulled pork wraps, meatball subs and others made to order, with a whole range of salads also available.

Originally from Paisley in Scotland, Scot came to Tralee nearly 20 years ago. He trained to be a chef at the IT Tralee back in 2009 and after qualifying he worked in the West End in Fenit for 10 years.

In the wake of COVID, he founded Muerte BBQ (with the apt tagline “Barbecue To Die For”)   and he hasn’t looked back since, serving amazing food for all kinds of private parties — birthdays, anniversaries, Communions, Confirmations, corporate events etc.

Some of the mouthwatering sandwiches now available at Muerte Sandwich and Deli Bar at Matt The Butcher on Russell Street.

What’s so special about Muerte BBQ is Scot’s method of cooking the meat. He takes a joint of pork or beef and cooks it for a minimum of six hours in a smoker over charcoal and wood chunks which results in incredible flavours in the melt-in-the-mouth tender meat.

The meats used in sandwiches and wraps at his new venture in Muerte Sandwich & Deli bar, will come from his smoker and are sure to go down a treat.

Scot will be open Monday to Saturday at Matt The Butcher, so make sure to call in and sample some of his mouthwatering options.

Meanwhile, Muerte BBQ is available for bookings on 087-2650074, Check out his outdoor catering menu below. Also, check out his Facebook page  by clicking here for updates and competitions.

Where Would The Top Gear Lads Get A ‘Joey Special’ If They Stopped In Tralee?

Joey BrogueSO Matt LeBlanc and Chris Evans are in Kerry this weekend and a lot of people are getting excited.

The Top Gear presenters are on the way to Dingle later, probably via Killarney. But if they decided to pass through Tralee on the way, we’re thinking Matt LeBlanc might be channelling his ‘inner Joey’ and get peckish for his beloved sandwiches. Everyone knows Joey loves sandwiches…

With the help of a few local restaurants, we decided to have a bit of craic and asked them to come up with a ‘Joey Special’ just in case the two lads pop into town for a bite during the weekend.

First we went to the swish surroundings of The Rose Hotel where Head Chef Odran Lucey came up with a gourmet effort to appeal to Joey’s finer tastebuds.

Odran, who is preparing for the upcoming opening of a new gourmet restaurant in the hotel, rustled up some Dingle Dexter Beef on a country loaf with Cashel Blue cheese, red onion relish and steakhouse chips. We think Joey would approve…

Next we headed down to Kirby’s Brogue Inn where Noreen O’Mahony came up with two delicious plates.

Noreen decided Matt would like the home-cooked ham, chicken, crispy cos lettuce, red onion, tomato, mayonnaise and dijon mustard on Barry’s Bread. And because Joey doesn’t share food, for Chris she made a barbecued panini with mayo, barbecue sauce, chicken, melted cheese and mixed peppers.

These sandwiches are better known on the menu as ‘Rock On’ and ‘Barbecued Brogue Panini’ respectively. Here’s how Joey would react….

Over in Yummy Cafe on Dominick Street, Siobhan O’Sullivan appealed to Joey’s famed love of meat.

Joey Yummy 2
Yes, it is indeed Yummy.

She put in some ham, chicken, Spanish chorizo, Serrano ham, tomato, mozzarella cheese and sweet tomato relish with tomato and basil soup to wash it down. We think he’d agree it looks Yummy…

And finally, if the lads decided to head out for the night they’d need some soakage.

Danny Leane over in The Abbey Inn created this barbecued pulled pork, served with coleslaw on crispy ciabatta bread with side salad and onion rings. Whaddya think Joe?

You’d never know, they might pop in after driving the Conor Pass. Any cafes, restaurants or anyone else think they could make a better ‘Joey Special’? Send us your pics via Facebook.

The Taste of Success returns to RTÉ On and Dáithí Ó Sé is looking for food producers to enter.

RTÉ’s The Taste of Success is back and this year the show is going global with ‘The Food Flight’ so Kerry food producers take note!

The search is on for the next batch of innovative food entrepreneurs to bag a prize worth a cool €100,000 and the chance to see their product in more than 140 Lidl Ireland stores nationwide.

This year RTÉ and The Taste of Success sponsors Lidl Ireland are casting the net as wide as possible by launching a new way to enter the competition with ‘The Food Flight’.

They will fly one lucky person home from anywhere in the world to compete in The Taste of Success. So, you get a loved one home for a visit and they might win €100,000.

The Taste of Success presenter Dáithí Ó Sé said: “I’m thrilled The Taste of Success is returning for a third series. I don’t think the standard of food we got last year can be bettered, but I look forward to spending the summer finding out! We’ve got some new ideas this year that will make the show extra special. I’m looking forward to meeting the person who gets to fly home from anywhere in the world to compete. It would be amazing if they went on to win it too!”

The Taste of Success is a life-changing opportunity for food entrepreneurs. Competing on a regional basis, the food entrepreneurs progress through the competition by honing their product with their regional celebrity mentor with the Lidl Ireland judges having the final say on what will make it onto supermarket shelves nationwide.

The Taste of Success is open to anyone who has a wonderful food product. It might be your granny’s delicious bread recipe; a tasty new jam; or a sauce combination you’ve concocted or your special occasion desert. You might have dreamed up an innovative new health food product or it could even be your own home brew!

Do you have an amazing new recipe? Are you an amateur chef with a twist on a classic? Are you a professional chef with a signature dish? Are you a baker with the best buns? Is your idea worth €100,000? If so, and you fancy seeing your product on supermarket shelves nationwide – they want to hear from you!

The winner will walk away with a guaranteed contract with Lidl Ireland which will see their product on shelves in more than 140 supermarkets nationwide.

And this year, you can win even if you aren’t entering the competition yourself.

‘The Healthy Irishman’, Gavan O’Reilly from Tralee who has a thriving business in Los Angeles.

A TRALEE chef is enjoying a fantastic career in Los Angeles, which has seen him feed Oscar-winning directors, supermodels, rock gods, rap moguls and NBA stars since he moved Stateside 15 years ago.

Gavan Murphy, who grew up in Oakpark, is thriving with his company ‘The Healthy Irishman’ and just this month he’s had recipes featured in the hugely popular Muscle & Fitness magazine, which has some guy called Arnold Schwarzenegger as Executive Editor.

Gavan – son of Joe and Mary Murphy, who now live in The Kerries – is one of the most popular and respected chefs in LA.

“I love it here,” he told TraleeToday.ie when we contacted him during the week.

“It’s sunshine most of the year.  I’ve been here 15 years this month and I work mainly as a personal chef for celebrities, professional sports people and anyone else really who has an interest in eating healthy. I also work with trainers structuring diets for their clients,” said Gavan.

It’s been a long, hard road to where he is now, from working summer jobs in Dublin restaurants, to catching the cooking bug on a stint in a Martha’s Vineyard restaurant in the 90s.

Having completed a course in Ballymaloe, Gavan worked in restaurants in Dingle and London, before leaving for Los Angeles in June 2000 at the age of 30.

He worked as an assistant chef for a few years before getting his big break when supermodel Cindy Crawford hired him as a personal chef for three months when she was preparing to promote a fitness product for a prominent company.

Then Josh Homme of rock band Queens Of The Stone Age hired him, followed by jobs for  former Roc-a-Fella Records executive Damon Dash and NBA star Baron Davis.

His website features testimonials from Titanic/Avatar director James Cameron and his wife Suzy Amis, for whom he has cooked on many social occasions.

He met wife Christy, a Texan, in Venice (the Los Angeles one!) in 2005 and both of them have grown ‘The Healthy Irishman’ into a thriving business. His focus is to show people that cooking doesn’t have to be complicated and healthy food doesn’t mean bland or boring.

The father of one (three year old Dillon), Gavan gets home once a year to catch up with friends and family Joe, Mary and brother Ross, before heading back to a hectic lifestyle in LA.

And his hopes for the future?

“To become the biggest name in the food and fitness market. Simple as that,” he said.

With his determination and Tralee charm who’d bet against him?

IT’S not just musician Gary Keane that’ll be flying the flag for Tralee talent at this year’s Electric Picnic (see story here).

Local business, The Gluten Free Kitchen, has been invited to showcase and sell its products at the famous festival.

Doireann Barrett, who owns and runs the cafe, was contacted by well known food critic Sally McKenna who personally invited her to come sell at the festival.

“It’s a great thrill to be asked to come on board, we have to set our minds set now preparation now, which will be difficult because we have never done a music festival before,” said Doireann.

“Thankfully other local businesses are giving us a helping hand” she added.

The Gluten Free Kitchen is based in Ivy Terrace and has been in operation going since 2012.

“We’ll be able to cater for celiacs at Electric Picnic along with health-conscious gig-goers too,” said Doireann. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase our brand nationally and to network,” she added.

The Kitchen will set up in an indoor marquee called ‘Theatre of Food’ from 10am to 8pm, where they will be alongside celebrity chefs such as Darina Allen and Clodagh McKenna who will be doing food demonstrations.

Doireann and one other staff member will head up for the festival in Stradbally Co Laois. It won’t be all work as they will get all access passes for the duration of the music festival.
