AUSTIN Stacks Hurling & Football Club launched a new three-year sponsorship of their under-age teams and a formal partnership with Jigsaw Kerry on Sunday.

Ned O’Shea & Sons Construction Ltd and John Lane & Sons Ltd, Food Service Distributors, will jointly sponsor Austin Stacks U-17, U-15 and U-13 football teams – six teams in total – for a three-year period beginning this year, however their branding will not appear on the shirts.

The jerseys of the six sponsored teams will display the logo, ‘Jigsaw Kerry Youth Mental Health’ and Austin Stacks is also availing of the expertise of Jigsaw Kerry to provide mental health information, support and counselling for team members, both individually and in groups.

Club Chairman Billy Ryle welcomed the partnership with Jigsaw Kerry, which is a free, non-judgemental and confidential mental health support service for young people aged 12-25 years living, working or studying in Kerry.

Billy Ryle said that it was a pleasure for Austin Stacks to be associated with two long established Kerry based companies in promoting the club’s aims and objectives and he thanked both companies for providing Austin Stacks with the financial support to maintain and improve the service that the club provides for its young players.

Benny Murphy in replying on behalf of joint-sponsors, Ned O Shea & Sons Ltd and John Lane & Sons Ltd, stated that both companies were delighted to provide a financial package to Austin Stacks at a time when it was difficult to fund under age activities.

The sponsorship will help to pay for the new jerseys as well as essential equipment. Neither company was too interested in self-promotion nor in having their logos dominating the new jerseys, Benny said.

Instead, they were using the sponsorship to promote the work of Jigsaw Kerry, which provides a range of supports for young people with issues of mental health.

He said the exposure will create awareness of the availability of the service to those who may need support in dealing with the various issues that young people encounter.

Frank O’Rahilly of Jigsaw Kerry said they were thrilled to be promoting positive mental health in the club. Jigsaw Kerry emphasises early intervention and prevention when dealing with youth mental health. He said no problem was too small.

Jigsaw Kerry will now work with the Club in promoting positive mental health through workshops, team talks and individual counselling.

Through his commitment to pushing himself physically and mentally through some of the world’s toughest challenges, he is an inspirational role model to all young people in Ireland.”

The event, which is sponsored by Lee Strand Creamery, takes place in the Rose Hotel, Dan Spring Rd,  on October 8, with refreshments at 7pm and the talk beginning at 7.30pm.  Contact Jigsaw Kerry on 066 718 6785 to book a ticket.

A MAN based at the Jigsaw Kerry centre is looking forward to a big cycle in aid of the National Centre for Youth Mental Health this September.

Donagh Hennebry works at their Tralee centre in Edward Street and he’s hoping other cyclists will sign up for the Giro D’Jigsaw — a 3 day, 470km cycle from Galway to Dublin and back to Galway taking place from Friday 29th September to Sunday 1st October to raise vital funds to support young people with their mental health.

“It is limited to just 60 cyclists and over half the places are already gone,” said Donagh. “So far two people from Kerry have signed up — and one of those is me — with the huge number of cyclists in the county I’m sure there’s loads more who may be interested,” he said.

Each cyclist will experience life like a cycle pro, starting their journey from the rugged coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way in Galway to the gorgeous coast of the Irish Sea along Ireland’s Ancient East and back again.

The challenge aims to raise over €50,000 to support Jigsaw’s work improving the lives of young people experiencing mental health difficulties.

There is a €50 registration fee, and participants asked to raise a minimum of €750 to take part. Jigsaw will be there with you every step of the way, giving ideas and support to help you reach your fundraising target.

For those intersted in signing up to cycle, they can do so at www.jigsaw.ie/girodjigsaw

Organised by teacher Dónal Ó Ruanaidh, with help from the other teachers, some 360 students took part in a range of events including cartwheel racing, a skipping competition, sack race, athletics, hurling and much more all through Irish.

A collection was made on the day for Jigsaw Kerry – the organisation which helps young people with mental health issues – and the proceeds (€400) were presented on Wednesday to Jimmy Mulligan of Jigsaw Kerry, who thanked the staff and students for their generosity.

CLOUDLESS skies last night provided Colin ‘Poshey’ Aherne with beautiful conditions to complete the final run of his ‘5k a day’ January challenge.

The moon illuminated more than 200 runners as they took off from The Station House in Blennerville at 7.15pm.

His goal was to raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding Mental Health. The people of Tralee rallied behind the idea, raising over €6,000 so far which will be donated through the gofundme page set up by Poshey in aid of the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation and Jigsaw Kerry.

The idea came from Vincent O’Leary of the Kerry Crusaders who ran 5k a day in December. Hailed for his passion and commitment, Poshey inspired people throughout the county to become more active and urged them to most importantly, “don’t be afraid to talk”.

A presentation was made to Poshey by Elma Walsh and Jimmy Mulligan as a token of their appreciation of the work he’s done. Scroll down for photos…

COLIN ‘Poshey’ Aherne has had a busy month.

The well-known mental health awareness campaigner took on a 5k A Day for January challenge and he’s nearing the end of the road.

Poshey was donating €1 for each run to total €31 for the month, but he started a gofundme page which has raised €3,782 (up to noon on Wednesday) of his goal to reach €4,000, all in aid of the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation and Jigsaw Kerry.

No doubt with the generosity of the people of Tralee, he’ll reach it by Tuesday when there’ll be a special celebration to mark the end of his challenge.

Poshey is inviting all to come to The Station House in Blennerville at 7pm to join him  for the final run.

Afterwards there will be a cheque presentation and a few words from Poshey, along with finger food. Representatives from Jigsaw Kerry and Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation will also be there. To contribute to the gofundme page click here

THERE was an amazing turnout last night for a special mental health and suicide awareness/prevention event at the Tralee Bay Wetlands.

The ‘Walk 4 Life’, a 5km walk to raise awareness of the suicide issue was a resounding success and a very special occasion for all involved.

Around 500 people registered for the walk and there was a great atmosphere before the event started with the rhythmic skills of the Different Skins drumming group entertaining those present.

With a registration pack costing €10, a lot of money was raised for the chosen charities ‘Jigsaw Kerry’, ‘Pieta House’, ‘Be Aware Prevent Suicide’ and ‘The Kerry Peer Support Network’.

“It’s wonderful to see that with all the families coming out here they are helping to break down the stigma around mental health issues and suicide,” said Lorraine Bowler, who organised the walk with Colin Aherne.

“Hopefully people will have conversations about the issue and anyone who needs help will seek it,” she added.

Radio Kerry’s Weeshie Fogarty was there to set the walkers off and spoke of the importance of such events to raise awareness of such a serious issue.

Families, walkers and runners then set off on the short journey before returning for tea and coffee served afterwards with the lighting of tee lights.
