Munster Club Championships

Five Kerry club teams made the trip to the University of Limerick on bank holiday Monday (May 6th) to represent the county in the Munster Club Championship Finals.

In the D Grade Listowel were the Kerry representatives. After overcoming the Country Club from Tipperary 4 – 0 they effectively faced Cork club Carrigaline in the decider as the Cork team had also beaten the Tipp side earlier in the morning.

Patricia O Herlihy got Listowel off to a great start in the Ladies Doubles but Carrigaline responded by winning the Men’s singles. The Cork side also won the Ladies doubles but Paddy Redmond and Alan Nelligan won the men’s doubles to tie the match 2-2 going into the Mixed.

Nelligan then teamed up with Mairead Regan to win their mixed game and Paddy Redmond and Valerie Guiney came up just short after a battling performance so it was 3-3 and the third mixed game featuring Fergal Hannon and Patricia O Herlihy went down to the very final set.

Unfortunately the Cork side prevailed in the decider taking the contest and the Munster title 4 -3

The Kingdom Club from Castleisland were the Kerry representatives in Grade E. Tipperary club Nenagh were the opposition in the  semi-final and whilst they put up a good fight victory for the Kerry side never looked in doubt as they eventually took it 5 – 1.

Carrigaline of Cork overcame Limerick club Tourin in the other semi-final so it was another Cork versus Kerry final.

Kingdom through Niamh Hickey won the ladies singles but it was 3 – 1 to Carrigaline going into the mixed as the took the other three games.  Kingdom fought very well in the mixed but it was not to be as it proved a great day for the Cork club taking the C, D and E grades.

Kingdom grade e Munster runners up.

Listowel lost out in the quarter final to host club and eventual Grade F champions the University of Limerick despite a good showing by ladies doubles pairing Jill Redmond and Valerie Guiney who won their game 21-14, 21-11 meanwhile the Moyvane H team got off to a good start with Eva Browne winning her singles game but Cork club Innishannon were too strong in the end. Limerick club Shuttle however beat them in the final.

So last team in action on the day was the Moyvane grade G team. In a very exciting semi-final they eventually just got over the line 4 – 3 against Modeligo of Waterford and then faced Tipperary club Templemore in the final. The Tipp club took but singles games comfortably but Moyvane rallied in the doubles and though the Men lost out Maire Kennelly and Michelle Corridon keep the match alive winning the ladies double game. It was all down to the mixed now and although Barry O Callaghan and Maire Kennelly in particularly put in a great effort in their game it was not to be Moyvane’s day as the Tipperary team took the first mixed game and the Grade G Munster title.

So no Munster titles for Kerry but in finishing runners-up in three of the five grade the county contested it was a good day non the least.

Kerry County League Mixed Finals

The four Kerry county league finals took place over two nights Monday April 29th in Annascaul and Wednesday May 1st in Castleisland.

The Division 2 final between Listowel and Kingdom got off to a thrilling start as both singles matches went to three sets with both with each side taking a point.

Kingdom got on top in the doubles and took a 3 -1 lead into the mixed. But Brid Murphy and Aidan McCarthy of Kingdom took the second mixed to clinch the Div 2 title for Kingdom 4 – 2 a first for the club since 2015.

Listowel who had teams in 3 of the 4 finals this year also contested the division 3 decider against Killarney a few nights later. After winning both singles they also took the ladies doubles and a 3 – 1 lead into the mixed. Killarney never quite looked like turning the deficit around eventually losing out 5 – 2.

The Division 4 final saw a derby fixture between local rivals Moyvane and Listowel. Moyvane took both the singles and they ladies doubles to take a 3 – 0 lead. Listowel battled bravely in the Men’s Doubles but eventually lost out in three sets to Moyvane pairing Liam O Connor and John Newman meaning the mixed games would be irrelevant to the overall result. It was 4 in a row of Division 4 titles for Moyvane as they picked up the recently named Mike Corridon Cup called after their own clubman who has served both his club and county in badminton matters with great distinction for many years.

Moyvane were also involved in the Division 5 final against a Ballyheigue team that have never won a Division 5 title before and have indeed rarely reached the final before. They got off to a nervy start losing the ladies singles to Eva Browne of Moyvane but when Aidan Reidy won the Men’s singles it was met with a thunderous ovation from the onlooking Ballyheigue supporters.  Moyvane took the ladies doubles but Ballyheigue ensured the scores were all aboard again winning the Mens doubles.

It would ultimately all go down to the third mixed game Moyvane took the first mixed but Ballyheigue responded again to take the second mixed. Moyvane were in the privileged position at this point to able to call upon Padraig Hanrahan who had won a county title earlier in the season and Charlotte Quinn who had reached a county final. This experience was definitely a telling factor against a very game Alan O Hallorahan and Michelle Corr who put in a battling performance but the Moyvane pairing took it in two sets and the Kerry title 4 – 3.

They had been beaten by Kingdom in the 2018 final so Ballyheigue can perhaps take encouragement from that fact and bounce back and go one better in 2020.

THE Kerry Badminton Association organised a special event for four former members of the executive committee of the organisation at the Riverside Hotel in Castleisland last Tuesday night (March 5th).

Addressing a large audience made up of past and present members of clubs from throughout the county plus family and friends of those being honoured the President of the Association Johnny Brosnan informed the crowd that “between the four of them they had given 110 years of service to Kerry Badminton”.

The first person honoured on the night was Marian O Neill who has been involved with badminton in Kerry since the 1980s.

Marian served as treasurer for the Ashe club in Tralee and subsequently with the County Club after the Ashe club disembarked.

She spent several years as treasurer of the Kerry Badminton Association and also managed the Grade E Kerry team with Catherine Murphy for four years.

In honour of her work for badminton in Kerry the Ladies Doubles Division 4 Cup has been dedicated in Marian’s name.

Next up to receive worthy praise was former Vice-Chairperson of the Association Mike Corridon.

In paying tribute to Mike fellow Moyvane clubman and current Vice-President of the Association Olly Conyard said that “he was involved in the club since its inception back in the 1970s and part of a Club Mixed Final team that reach a County Final in 1986 and many times subsequently”.

He spent many years as Chairperson of the club and was still 2016 when Moyvane were award All-Ireland Club of the Year. At Kerry level Mike spent 17 years as Vice-Chairperson and when it came to looking for sponsorship there was no better man than Mike to get it”.

As a gesture of thanks for the service Mike Corridon has given to badminton in Kerry the Division 4 Mixed League Cup has been named in his honour.

Introducing the next recipient of honours on the night, Tom Clear the Vice-Chairperson of the Kerry Badminton Association spoke of the dedication Brid Murphy gave to the game that she first feel in love with whilst in 5th class in primary school.

.

He spoke about the wonderful treble success of Singles, Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles which Brid achieved as a player at the Division 4 grade back in 2001.

Brid won a Division 3 county doubles title in 2003 with Marie O’Connor and in 2011 captured a Division 2 singles title and a special doubles title with her sister Catherine.

Brid has spent several years as secretary of her local Kingdom Club in Castleisland and also spent several years as Assistant Secretary at Kerry level before taking over the role of Secretary from the long serving Peggy Horan in 2016 and Tom Clear described Brid as “Miss Reliability”.

In honour of Brid the Ladies Doubles Division 2 Cup will has been named in her honour.

Last and certainly not least new Kerry Badminton Chairperson Tom Bourke paid a deserved glowing tribute to the great Junior Griffin who finally decided to step down from his role as Chairperson of the County Board after giving it a wonderful 42 years of service.

Speaking of Junior Tom said; “43 seasons later with almost 1,000 competitions of which Junior has missed only a handful. What a record! Junior, diminutive by name, magnificent by nature. Given three words to describe him – Innovative, Committed and Personal.

Prince of the Pen – Master of the written word, with a quintessential turn of phrase, how we so looked forward to reading his weekly reports. Junior always maintains that a picture paints a thousand words but his words painted many a priceless picture such was his wonderful command of the English language.

How many of us have plagiarised and paraphrased his words over the years? He was also a master with the spoken word, a master of persuasion …”

Tom went on to read out several lovely tributes people had submitted about Junior including a great anti-dote by fellow clubman Mark Loughnane who clearly illustrated his powers of persuasion.

According to Mark; “when Junior worked as a Shop Assistant in McKenna’s of Listowel you might approach him looking for a patch for a bicycle puncture but walk away with a Waterford Crystal Vase”.

Johnny Brosnan of the Kerry Badminton Association made a special presentation to Junior.

From the month of January until the month of April the Killarney Sports Centre will see a host of Badminton activity between Munster and Kerry championships as well as some Inter County team events.

With the Killarney hall offering 8 badminton courts it has proved to be a great venue to host such Badminton events.

The first of the Munster championship events will be the senior 2 and the graduates competitions to be held in the Killarney Sports hall on Sunday next January 17th. These Championships are to be hosted by Kerry so all clubs are requested to supply helpers on the day.

Please contact coordinator Jennifer Keane at 083 3347228 and advise if you could help out on the day for an hour or two.

The Munster Senior 1 Championships and the Junior Championships take place also in Killarney on Sunday January 31st. Hopefully these events will see many Kerry entries. Again, details and entry forms can be secured from Club secretaries.

In between these Munster events on Sunday January 24th will see the start of the CPC.IE sponsored Kerry County singles championships in both ladies and mens disciplines for divisions 1,3 and 5.

It is hoped to see a good turnout out in these singles events.

Junior Griffin from Listowel is Chairman of the Kerry Badminton Association and has been involved in the sport for over 50 years. He said the night was a celebration of the year for the Kerry clubs and their achievements.

“They’re coming from all corners of Kerry for the night. From Listowel to Dingle, Killarney and Iveragh. There will be presentations for the county league and championships with the special merit award going to Mike Riordan from the Sneem/Iveragh Club,” said Junior.

While there were 25 clubs in Kerry some years ago, the badminton scene is still thriving in the county.

“We have 600 members playing senior badminton and about the same number playing in the juvenile section,” said Junior.

With the great atmosphere on the night amongst the members present, the future of the sport is secure for years to come.
