IN what was the final day before nipping off for the Christmas holidays, LCA students at KDYS had a morning with a difference in aid of the Kerry Cancer Support Group.
A pyjama morning was held for the charity that runs the vital Kerry Cork Health Link Bus. Students raised money through donations and in doing so raised awareness for the Kerry Cancer Support Group around the town.
Second year KDYS student, Amy Diggins, was behind the fundraiser. She approached the group because she wanted to make everyone aware of the dangers of cancer and in particular early detection, especially for young people.

“A relative of mine had used the service and we thought they were very good. Also, with it being free, we wanted to give something back to the charity,” said Amy.
Kerry Cancer Support Group is a free community service open to all, without referral. It aims to provide social support to individuals on their cancer journey.
The charity operates a 14 seater minibus which ferries cancer sufferers from Kerry to University Hospital Cork and back five days a week.
TRALEE Lions Club and Kerry Cancer Support Group joined forces in the Meadowlands Hotel on Thursday night for a table quiz.
The quiz was being held in aid of the Group who run the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus which provides transport to and from Cork University Hospital for people going for cancer treatment.
The table quiz was well attended and there were spot prizes for competitors who all enjoyed the night.
LAST night, a blue collar boxing event took place in the Dome drawing in a rapturous crowd of 400-plus in aid of the Kerry Cancer Support Group.
Overall their were 19 bouts with every competitor giving their all in front of a crowd that almost blew the roof off the Dome.
One of the more well known fighters on the night, Martin Ferris, got the place going when he made a grand entrance to ‘I Fought the Law And The Law Won’.
“Those bodies are probably feeling it this morning!” said Breda Dyland of the Kerry Cancer Support Group.
“A huge congratulations to all those who took part. It was a really enjoyable night and one that is going to be talked about for a long time,” said Breda.
Fights that stood out on the night was, Gary Sugrue v Jim McCarthy, who threw everything they had at each other. Publican Danny Leane also put his neck on the line facing off against Darren Horan.
Tracey Heaphy v Zoe Nolan, was another fight that got the blood pumping and the crowd off their feet. The best fighters award’s on the night, were picked up by, Ibana McSweeney and Jim McCarthy.
The very entertaining event went off without a hitch with every fight going ahead, bar one.
Kerry Hurler, Mikey Boyle, was due to fight Kerry Junior football manager, Stephen Wallace, but that bout couldn’t go ahead because of Mikey Boyle’s, championship commitments this weekend with Ballyduff. Both men did make their presences felt to lend their support to the fighters.
Sinn Fein, public representatives Martin Ferris and Cathal Foley both won their fights, Toireasa Ferris, however was unable to make it a hat-trick for the party.
