KDYS Youth Day 2016
17-04-16
KDYS Youth Day took place at the INEC Killarney on Sunday last 17 April 2016 bringing together well over 1,000 young people from all over Kerry to celebrate, innovate and illustrate what it means to be young in Kerry today.

What is KDYS Youth Day?

KDYS Youth Day is an opportunity to celebrate the creative force and the innovative impetus that young people bring to every society. The annual event, which has been running for 40 years, see’s the active participation of over 1,000 Youth Club Members and hundreds of Volunteer Leaders from across the Diocese of Kerry. KDYS clubs support and enable young people to be active citizens helping to build stronger communities all around the County. They do this while having fun and promoting collective well-being. – Youth Day 2016, in Killarney on Sunday 17th April, marked a job well done for the 2015/16 season ending with a huge party taking over the INEC for the day.

A small selection of what was on offer throughout the day included Surf Simulator, Dance, Magic, Games, Fitness Challenge, Hair & Beauty, Variety Competition, Live Band (The fab Chapter 2 from Tralee) and of course the Mega Disco. The emphasis was on fun, fun, fun…. designed to encourage as much getting stuck in as possible and the “punters” did just that!

KDYS Director Tim O Donoghue said: ‘Youth Day is a day where we celebrate the positivity and spirit of all young people in Kerry. Our programme of work is designed to ensure that all young people who participate in KDYS realise their potential and learn the skills to help them make good choices in their lives. We are there to facilitate and to provide the space for young people to become active members of their communities and one thing is for sure they never cease to amaze us with their vision, their creativity and their positivity. Let’s hope that our next government realise the importance of this and prioritise investment in opportunities for young people and we nurture our young to become leaders in our society.’

In the year that’s in it 1916 also got a look in with young people being encouraged to participate in Snap Ciarraí. This is an initiative of the Trustees of Muckross House who are seeking the assistance of the public in compiling a photographic record of current day County Kerry to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising (see http://www.snapciarrai.ie/).

Photo Booths, Selfies and “Traditional Snappers” all captured the smiling happy people that was KDYS Youth Day 2016.
