Kilmoyley’s second-half comeback was just enough to see them past St Brendan’s in the Garvey’s Supervalu Kerry SHC semi-final at Austin Stack Park on Sunday. Mike O’Halloran reports…

Fionan MacKessy of St Brendan’s had a chance to level this game at the very end, but he was narrowly wide and so the champions Kilmoyley advanced to another county final.

Perhaps if MacKessy and Eric Leen were introduced earlier St Brendan’s might be in the final.

St Brendan’s started the better and were two points ahead on seven minutes with points from John Egan. Egan had two more four minutes later, before Sean Maunsell opened Klmoyley’s account on 13 minutes.

Daniel Collins tapped over a point, with Kevin Skinner replying for St Brendan’s, but Maunsell struck back for Kilmoyley.

St Brendan’s open up a four point gap with points from Kevin Skinner, Darren Wallace and Daithi Griffin while John Egan had three more points before halftime, to leave the score St Brendan’s 0-10 points Kilmoyley 0-4.

St Brendan’s were in total control in the first half and within a minute of the restart, they were seven points ahead.

Kilmoyley had made some adjustments to their team and Jordan Brick began the revival with a point. Sean Nolan followed suit.

Aiden McCabe then pointed to leave four between them. Joe McElligott drove over another, Daniel Collins tapped over a free, to reduce the margin to two.

Then a long ball was driven into Royle, he got a touch, it fell to Daniel Collins and he blasted to the net, 1-9 to 0-11 now with 43 minutes on the clock.

John Egan reduced the margin to one point in overtime, to leave the score at that stage Kilmoyley 1-13 St Brendan’s 0-15.

REPORT/PHOTOS: Ballyduff Coast Into County Final After Beating Lacklustre Abbeydorney

Mike O’Halloran watched Ballyduff snuff out Abbeydorney’s challenge yesterday, to reach the Garvey’s Supervalu Kerry SHC final next month…

Ballyduff  1-20

Abbeydorney 0-11

In my preview, I tipped Ballyduff to win this encounter with Abbeydorney, but I did not expect that the margin would be so wide.

After the first two rounds, I thought that this Abbeydorney team had all the tools necessary to trouble Ballyduff.

That is not the way it turned out, as Abbeydorney never came near presenting any kind of a challenge to Ballyduff.

Ballyduff lined out with two changes to the team named on the programme; Aiden Boyle was named at number fifteen, even though he is on the injured list for another few weeks at least.

.

Padraig Boyle took Aiden’s place and Barry O’Grady started instead of David Goulding.

There was a lot of talk recently about teams posting dummy teams for programmes and it was supposed to be addressed by the GAA.

Ballyduff may have tried to confuse the opposition with their programme selection, but I think Abbeydorney confused themselves, by completely rejigging their team.

I find it hard to understand how Kieran Dineen did not play at centre back and why they persisted with Brian O’Leary as a sweeper, when he could be better used up front assisting the forwards.

There is very little to say about the game apart, from mentioning the great display of fabulous skill on show from Jack Goulding with 0-8 points and Padraig Boyle scoring 1-9.

Brian O’Leary opened Abbeydorney’s scoring, Padraig Boyle replied for Ballyduff. After eleven minutes, Padraig Boyle made it five points to one, with a sixty five.

James O’Connor, who had been excellent all season had a point back for Abbeydorney, but eight minutes later Jack Goulding pointed to make it nine to two.

Ballyduff led by ten at halftime 0-13 to 0-3. Five minutes into the second half they led 1-14 to 0-4, when Padraig Boyle got a touch on a ball, struck in by Michael Boyle and it flashed to the net, out the grasp of Eoin Egan and out of Beano’s reach.

Game over with  twenty five minutes to go. It finally ended with Ballyduff scoring 1-20 and Abbeydorney finishing with  0-11.

Disappointment for an Abbeydorney team, that had big dreams for 2016. The dream of reaching the final must begin again next year for them. With the amount of talent they have, that dream is not far away. Ballyduff march on to a final with Kilmoyley.

PREVIEW: A Tight One To Call Between Last Year’s Finalists

Kerry ETB INSERT
.

Mike O’Halloran looks forward to the repeat of last year’s final on Sunday when champions Kilmoyley take on St Brendan’s in the Garveys Supervalu Kerry SHC semi-final on Sunday in Austin Stack Park (throw-in 3.30pm)…

Kilmoyley St Brendans 2
Action from last year’s final between Kilmoyley and St Brendan’s.

Kilmoyley will put their title on the line, when they meet neighbours St Brendan’s this Sunday in second part of the double-header in Tralee.

Kilmoyley fell to Abbeydorney but are back on track, with a win over Lixnaw. That win was led by an injured Daniel Collins, who has had a couple of weeks to recover further from that injury.

Sean Dowling is also restored to the team, his presence at full back is a huge bonus for them. Seanie Murnane and Sean Nolan are solid hurling backs, Tom Murnane continues to impress, as does Dougie Fitzell at centre back.

Continued below…

.

Paudie O’Connor was very impressive, with the Kerry under 21s on Saturday and Jordan Brick recovered his form against Lixnaw. Luke Fitzell, Maurice O’Connor and Sean Maunsell will all contribute to the Kilmoyley effort to retain The Neilus Flynn.

One of their stand-out men in the quarter-final was James Godley and he will need to be at his very best to curb the host of stars on the St Brendan’s team.

St Brendan’s have cruised through their side of the draw, putting up huge scores against Causeway and Ballyheigue. They welcome Cian Hussey back to form, and he has proved to be a very important cog in their forward division.

The St Brendan’s forward line includes the genius that is John Egan and for Kilmoyley to win, he has to be curtailed. Tim Hanafin, Kevin Skinner and Darren Wallace will keep the Kilmoyley halfback line interested.

Daithi Griffin and Stephen Leen form a lively midfield – Griffin is a master ball carrier.

Perhaps their strongest line is the halfbacks, which includes the best centre back in Division 1B of the National Hurling League  in Darren Dineen.

Eamonn Corridon and Kevin Orpen will assist in attempting to repulse Brick, Maunsell and Fitzell, while the Horgans Fionan and Rory will need to be at their best to shackle Maurice O’Connor and Joe McElligott.

The experienced Conor Flaherty will provide protection for Darren Delaney in the goal. I have a suspicion that Kilmoyley might just scrape this one, based only on the fact that St Brendan’s had an easy passage to the semis and have not been tested.

Kilmoyley also welcome back to fitness Robert Collins. I saw him play in a challenge last week he looked sharp. Expect a massive battle with St Brendan’s attempting to make up for the loss of last year’s final.

Ballyduff Abbeydorney 8
Action from last year’s championship game between Abbeydorney and Ballyduff.

We are down to the last four, in the championship, where Ballyduff take on Abbeydorney, and Kilmoyley joust with St Brendan’s.

Ballyduff, it is fair to say, started out this year, more in hope than expectation, they have reached the semis, with a comprehensive win over Causeway, a win that was orchestrated by Padraig Boyle.

I have been tipping Abbeydorney to go all the way this year.  I spoke to Kieran Dineen during the week, and he was optimistic about O’Dorneys chances against Ballyduff.

He cites a new attitude, by this current crop of Abbeydorney players. A big plus for the Bricksiders, is that they have all their big players around for the summer.

Continued below…

.

They have big numbers at training, and are a very tight knit group. Abbeydorney have won both their games, to get to the semi-final.

In their replay against Crotta, they managed to shut down the threat of Crotta’s big guns, like, Shane Nolan, Sean Weir and Jordan Conway. In order to overcome Ballyduff, they will have to nullify the threat posed by Padraig Boyle, especially.

Padraig Boyle will have to be on top form and will need loads of support, from the likes of Jack Goulding and his brother Liam, to overcome Abbeydorney.

The O’Leary’s will lead the van for O’Dorney, but this Abbeydorney team is solid front to back. Beano I think has found a position that suits them best, his shot stopping and game management, from between the posts is very impressive.

Niall O’Connell and Aiden Healy, leave little past them. Kieran Dineen is a huge at centre back.

Up front James O’Connor is lethal  and Mike Hannafin works his socks off  for about 40 minutes, he is then replaced by the likes of Stevie O’Sullivan or Ronan Donovan.

Donovan and O’Sullivan provide serious pace when their opponents are beginning to flag and punish with hard running and accurate striking.

Abbeydorney should have too much power for Ballyduff, but you write off, Ballyduff at your peril.

Paud Costello, David O’Grady and Padraig O’Grady, will make sure that no soft scores are allowed.  Eoin Ross at wing back is capable of scoring a long range point or two.

Daniel O’Carroll is back from injury and will support Michael Boyle at midfield. Anthony O’Carroll has a big game in his arsenal and will need to produce it next Sunday. John Hussey will gain confidence from his cracking goal against Causeway.

Jack Goulding is capable of having a massive influence on the game with his pace and skill. If he runs at the Abbeydorney defence, he can win frees – Abbeydorney allowed Crotta back into the drawn game with the concession of frees.

Gary O’Brien is not yet ready to hand over the mantle of being one of Kerry’s best forwards and he will relish the opportunity to pit his wits against Aiden Healy.

Ballyduff might just shade this one, but don’t be surprised if Abbeydorney reach their third final in recent years.

Kilmoyley and St Brendans in action in last year’s final. They’ll meet again in the semi-final on Sunday week.

CHAMPIONS Kilmoyley will do battle with parish neighbours St Brendans in a repeat of last year’s county final on Sunday week.

The draw for the semi-finals of the Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship was made on Radio Kerry today and resulted in the pairing as well as Abbeydorney taking on Ballyduff in the other semi-final. The games will be played as a double-header in Austin Stack Park on Sunday, August 14.

St Brendans will be out to avenge last year’s loss, when they were well beaten by Kilmoyley at Abbeydorney GAA grounds by 3-15 to 1-13.

Meanwhile, Abbeydorney have shown fine form defeating Crotta after a replay and then Kilmoyley to reach the semi-finals.

Ballyduff have improved well since their opening round defeat to Kilmoyley and really impressed in their victory over Causeway and the Boyle brothers goalscoring prowess will be a threat. It has the makings of a thrilling afternoon of hurling.

My preview said that Lixnaw would win if Daniel Collins didn’t play, well he did and his goal was the difference at the end.

Collins, who was heavily bandaged on his left hamstring, was only operating at less than 50 per cent of his capacity and finished up with one goal and four points on the scoreboard.

Lixnaw played with a strong wind in the first half and they made very poor use of whatever advantage the wind presents. They persisted in long high balls to their inside forwards, who were unable to either control or even to get to the end of.

Lixnaw had drawn level on 24 minutes, when Brendan Brosnan pointed a free to leave the score six points all.

Two minutes later Lixnaw were ahead seven to six as Michael Conway pointed a free.  Then a pivotal moment came when Daniel Collins strode through the Lixnaw defence and blasted to the net.

Lixnaw 0-10 Kilmoyley 1-8 at halftime.

Lixnaw did improve their challenge against the wind, but it was not enough to overcome Kilmoyley who went further ahead. Enda Galvin was introduced and he tapped over a point. He had a hand in the next score too when Michael Conway goaled.

That goal reduced the margin to four points, Paudie O’Connor pointed a sideline cut, Lixnaw replied with two points, but were unable to manufacture a goal to bring this to another day.

Kilmoyley did enough and players stepped up to help out the hampered Collins, especially Jordan Brick, who knocked over four points in the second half.

Maurice O’Connor and Joseph McElligott were lively up front, Paudie O’Connor and Dougie Fitzell also put in some serious work.

Kilmoyley advance to the semi-final with some work to do, Lixnaw return to the drawing board to try to figure out how manage their huge underage talent.

Scorers:

Kilmoyley: Daniel Collins 1-04 (4 frees) Jordan Brick 0-04, Paudie O’Connor (0-01 sideline cut,) Sean Maunsell 0-02, Maurice O’Connor 0-02 and Dougie Fitzell 0-02 , Tom Murnane 0-01, Sean Dowling 0-01, Joseph McElligott 0-1.

Causeway: Mike Conway 1-07 (7 frees), Brendan Brosnan 0-04 (3 frees), James Flaherty 0-02, John Griffin 0-01, Shane Conway 0-01, Enda Galvin 0-01.

• FOOTNOTE: A feature of the quarter-finals was the return from injury of Padraig Boyle, who turned out to be a huge influence on the Ballyduff performance. Boyle was far from being fully fit but he was able to overcome any opponent.

Likewise Daniel Collins was carrying an injury which meant he wasn’t operating near his best and he too was one of the best players on the field. I suppose class is permanent.

The Boyles brothers blitzed Causeway and brought the boys from Ballyduff into the semi-final yesterday.

In my preview of this game I had tipped Ballyduff to come out the right side of this encounter but I didn’t expect the margin to be so huge.

I had spoken of the talent that Causeway have in their ranks, but that talent has had problems with consistency and that lack of consistency was the story again today.

Causeway did show up and were level with a point each after two minutes. Seven minutes later they were on their way out of the championship when they trailed by thirteen points.

Continued below…

Aherns Ad Insert 1
.

The thirteen point margin was created by four quality goals from John Hussey, Jack Goulding, Liam Boyle and Padraig Boyle.

The halftime score in favour of Ballyduff was 4-11 to 0-5.

Causeway had the wind in the second half and they also had the first two scores from Brandon Barrett and Paul McGrath.

The score of the second half came from Padraig Boyle on fourteen minutes when he took six Causeway men out of the game with sidesteps to drive over a beauty.

After that Causeway had four points without reply from Paul McGrath, Stephen Murphy, Keith Carmody and Jason Leahy.

A goal at the end from Mark Murphy put a better look on the scoreboard, but that’s all it did.

Ballyduff were in total command from beginning to the end, with nearly all their players putting in a serious shift. The same cannot be said for Causeway, apart from Keith Carmody and perhaps Brandon Barrett.

Ballyduff used all their bravery, guile and match craft to put Causeway to the sword.

The Boyles were the stars. Michael at midfield lorded over all he surveyed. Liam at centre forward ran the line and pitched in with scores. Padraig was just magical in his play, even though he was only just returning from injury. Aiden who is out injured was on the line with sensible instructions. Paud Costello was at his ease, at fullback, Eric O’Connor, worked hard.

Ballyduff haven’t gone away and are going to be a force for either Abbeydorney or St Brendan’s.

Ballyduff Scorers: Padraig Boyle 1-09 (7 frees), Jack Goulding 2-01, Liam Boyle 1-02, John Hussey 1-0, Gary O’Brien 0-02, Daniel Carroll 0-01, Eric O’Connor 0-01.

Causeway Scorers: Keith Carmody 0-04, Paul McGrath (3 frees) 0-4, Brandon Barrett 0-3, Mark Murphy 1-0, Stephen Murphy 0-02, Bryan Murphy 01,  Jason Leahy 0-01.

Kilmoyley take on Lixnaw in the second game of the double-header in Tralee. The champions were defeated by a resurgent Abbeydorney in round two.

Most folk expected Kilmoyley to win that one, but they had no answer to Abbeydorney in extra time.

Daniel Collins went off injured in that game and his loss was immense. I saw Kilmoyley play in the county league and they impressed me with their ball distribution, game management and free scoring.

Continued below…

Kerry ETB INSERT
.

It is fair to say that their main playmaker is Collins and his loss through injury, early in the game against Abbeydorney really upset their rhythm.

Kilmoyley will hope Collins (who is looking very doubtful now) can make it for the challenge that Lixnaw will present.

James Godley, Tom Murnane attempted to get Kilmoyley over the line against Abbeydorney and were well aided by Paudie Connor.

Jordan Brick was not his usual effective self against Abbeydorney, so expect a huge game from him on Sunday. Luke Fitzell was also introduced that day and he may start. This is also a game that may suit a role for James McCarthy or Ian Brick.

Room to improve for Kilmoyley, that improvement might not be enough to overcome Lixnaw.

Lixnaw arrived in the quarter-final, with a victory over Crotta, a game that they never looked like losing.

Lixnaw were defeated in the first round by Causeway in a game that was very competitive and hard, but the conditions didn’t help.

They have a very solid core of quality players, especially up front, in the Conways, Ricky Heffernan, Jason Wallace and James Flaherty, who are all capable of getting scores.

Add in the hard working Jeremy McKenna, and you have a potent force. Colin Sheehy who didn’t start the last day, is also there to add to the mix.

At the back Pat Corridon is sorely missed and if he comes back, the Lixnaw challenge will be hugely enhanced.

John Griffin will pull the strings at midfield, he will be joined by the back in form Brendan Brosnan.

The other young star, Johnny Buckley, will be doing all in his power to curb either Collins or Paudie O’Connor.

Lixnaw to progress, if Daniel Collins does not play.

Lixnaw overcame the challenge of their near neighbours in the rain and wind swept arena that was Austin Stack Park on Sunday afternoon.

Goals win matches and Lixnaw put four past Crotta.

Lixnaw opened the scoring on four minutes with a John Griffin point and were three points to nil up before Crotta opened their account in the eleventh minute, a Shane Nolan pointed free.

Continued below…

.

Disaster struck for Crotta when John Griffin struck to the net from over forty metres out. Jordan Conway cancelled out that goal three minutes later, only for Ricky Heffernan to score a goal at the other end from the puck out.

Lixnaw led 2-5 to 1-4 at half-time. Lixnaw struck for goal after four minutes of the restart, when Ray Galvin netted in a busy goalmouth.

Crotta made little use of the wind and could only manage four points in the second half, while Lixnaw had another goal from Shane Conway.

So the wait for progression in the championship goes on for Crotta O’Neills. For Lixnaw’s part, they progress with loads of work to do before the next round.

If Pat Corridon can make it back for the next game and Lixnaw knuckle down for a few weeks of serious training, they will be a force to reckon with. They come up against Kilmoyley in the quarter-final a side they are pretty familiar with over recent years.

Abbeydorney dispatched the champions Kilmoyley to the quarter-finals – where they will play Lixnaw – with a well deserved four point victory after extra time.

This was a fine competitive game played in a good spirits in trying conditions. Paudie O’Connor opened the scoring for Kilmoyley, Michael O’Leary replied with the first of his eight points half a minute later.

It was nip and tuck until Abbeydorney had four points before the end of the first half from Mike Hanafin, James O’Connor, PJ Keane and a raker from Aiden Healy.

Sean Maunsell had a point in between for Kilmoyley. A huge factor in the game was the retirement of the great Daniel Collins through injury, his loss was immense for Kilmoyley, especially so early in the game.

Abbeydorney 0-7 Kilmoyley 0-4 was the score when play resumed for the second half. Kilmoyley had the first two scores of the second half from Murnane and James Godley.

Following those points James O’Connor struck a ball that must have rolled along the goal line almost wide. Tom Murnane, who was excellent throughout, drew the sides level on eight points all and Kilmoyley went ahead by two through Paudie O’Connor and James Godley.

Ronan Donovan was introduced for Mike Hannafin and he – along with David Egan and Stevie O’Sullivan – was to have a huge bearing on the result.

Donovan, of course, is a first cousin of Daniel Collins so half the Collins family were not too disappointed with the result perhaps.

The game ended in ordinary time twelve points all, after David Egan levelled it with a fine point.

At the beginning of extra time Beano Donovan made a great save from Sean Maunsell.

The sides were level at fourteen points each when Ronan Donovan struck a massive point to put O’Dorney ahead, followed by an equally impressive one from James O’Connor. Abbeydorney led at halftime in extra time 0-17 to 0-14.

Joe McElligott and Tom Murnane staged a mini revival for Kilmoyley but Abbeydorney were not to be denied a fine victory.

A complete display of hurling at its finest saw St Brendan’s advance in Round 2A of the Garvey’s Supervalu Kerry Senior Hurling Championship.

St Brendan’s who played into a very stiff breeze in the first half, held their own with Causeway, leaving the score at halftime Causeway 0-10 to St Brendan’s 1-7.

Kevin Skinner put St Brendan’s on their way with a goal on nine minutes, the organisation and sheer confidence of St Brendan’s choked the challenge posed by a determined Causeway and a huge wind.

John Egan, Cian Hussey, and Darren Wallace were very effective for the winners up front and Darren Dineen was massive at centre back.

In the second half, Cian Hussey was at the end of a long clearance and was able to goal past Tadgh Flynn, who was drafted into the goals to try to get some length into the pucks out against the wind.

St Brendan’s were 3-13 to 0-12 up with fifteen minutes to go, when Cian struck for another goal.

Keith Carmody scored a goal and a point in an attempt to start a Causeway revival but it was not enough, as Egan, Wallace and Hussey saw out the victory with points at will.

St Brendan’s have been very impressive in their two games to date and are well on the road to redemption for their loss in last year’s final. The only negative from a St Brendan’s point of view was that they finished with fourteen men.

AT the launch of the Garvey’s SuperValu sponsored Kerry Senior Hurling Championship a few weeks ago Abbeydorney were tipped, along with Causeway to be potential winners of the Nelius Flynn Cup.

Abbeydorney completely outplayed Crotta in the second half of this replay last night in Tralee, scoring 2-11 in the process.

The game began with Shane Nolan pointing a free won by Jordan Conway, but four minutes James O’Connor netted for Abbeydorney. Shane Nolan and Michael O’Leary then exchanged points.

Jordan Conway who was receiving close attention from the Abbeydorney backs, was fouled and Shane Nolan stepped up to point. Conway was to level maters on 20 minutes to make it 0-4 to 1-1.

Cathal Dower pointed a free for Abbeydorney, Shane Nolan replied for Crotta and so the halftime score was Crotta O’Neills 0-5 Abbeydorney 1-2.

Within 30 seconds of the second half,  PJ Keane had a point for Abbeydorney and they went on to score four more before Shane Nolan had one back for Crotta on 12 minutes, to make the score Abbeydorney 1-7  Crotta O’Neills 0-6.

Two minutes later James O’Connor put an end to the Crotta challenge with a goal.

Abbeydorney introduced Stevie O’Sullivan and later Ronan Donovan, both of whom were to have a big bearing on the final score, with Stevie pointing on 27  minutes, Ronan Donovan made a searing run through the Crotta defence to set up PJ Keane for his goal. Three minutes later Donovan set up Michael O’Leary for a point, 0-9 to 3-12 with 33 minutes on the clock.

Brian O’Leary and Shane Nolan exchanged points to make the final score Abbeydorney 3-13 Crotta O’Neills 0-10.

Abbeydorney looked solid in defence and Aiden Healy completely locked out Shane Nolan, who seemed to me to be carrying an injury and not firing on all cylinders. Jordan Conway tried very hard but when he got possession he was always surrounded.

James O’Connor worked very hard up front for Abbeydorney and the O’Learys made their presence felt on the scoreboard and in general play.

REPORT/PHOTOS: Champions Kilmoyley Look The Part In Defeat Of Ballyduff

I SAID in my preview that it had to be “now or not for a while” for Ballyduff and after their efforts against the champions it’s going to be a long while before Ballyduff can contend for a title. That is going on Sunday’s performance.

Anthony O’Carroll opened the scoring for Ballyduff on two minutes with a reply from Daniel Collins and then Michael Boyle put Ballyduff ahead.

Ashe Insert 1
.

The next five scores came from Kilmoyley to leave it 0-6 to 0-2 on ten minutes.

Ballyduff came back and went ahead on 16 minutes when Jack Goulding tapped over – he had a goal chance if he had held his feet. His point was cancelled out by Tom Murnane who made it seven points all. Jordan Brick split the posts a minute later to put Kilmoyley ahead eight points to seven.

From then on it was all Kilmoyley as they scored two goals and two points before the break. The goals came from Aiden McCabe with a free and Adrian Royle to make it 2-10 to 0-8 at halftime.

Kilmoyley Ballyduff Jordan Brick points

Ballyduff had a big wind to their back for the second half and their only plan seemed to be to launch the ball in high and hope for the best. Kilmoyley handled that tactic with ease.

Michael Boyle had a point within two minutes but Kilmoyley had the next three points from Collins, Brick and Maunsell.

Ballyduff had the last three points of the game when they gave up on the lobbed balls and drove over from distance to make the final score Kilmoyley 2-18 Ballyduff 0-18.

Kilmoyley looked like champions today but the Ballyduff challenge was poor. Ballyduff seemed to have no plan, lacked pace and didn’t have enough strength on the bench to influence matters, even though Paul O’Carroll did score two points on his introduction.

Kilmoyley were firing on all cylinders and a whole host of players put up their hands for mention as man of the match.

Ballyduff might improve in the next round, which could see the return of Barry O’Grady, Daniel O’Carroll and perhaps Bobby O’Sullivan. But their defeat today was not just about players it was more about not being able to manage the game against a very confident and organised Kilmoyley.

Causeway – who lined out without their star man Colum Harty, who hasn’t played since the game against Westmeath in the league – made a winning start to this years Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry senior hurling championship when they defeated Lixnaw in a tough encounter in Kilmoyley.

Lixnaw made the early running and were three points to one up before Alan Whyte drilled the ball to the net for Causeway to put them ahead by one.

Shane Conway put Lixnaw ahead on 20 minutes and they held that lead until halftime with the scores  Lixnaw 0-7 Causeway 1-2. Causeway had two goal chances in the first half but were guilty of over playing the ball and taking that extra pass.

Keith Carmody goaled for Causeway almost from the throw-in to put them ahead only for Shane  Conway, who the subject of some very hefty challenges to draw Lixnaw back level.

Colin Sheehy put them ahead and it was tit for tat to the end until the Murphy’s – Stephen and Bryan – both pointed and got Causeway over the line.

One aspect of this game that surprised me was the reluctance of the referee to punish some very serious foul play, letting the game flow is fine but players must be protected.

Extra time was the last thing most neutrals wanted to see in this game played in Ballyduff, such was the poor fare presented by both teams.

The game was full of passion and honest endeavour but the skill level was pretty low.  I hate the term “a draw was a fair result” but tonight it was apt as neither team deserved to win.

Abbeydorney had a dream start with Michael O’Leary shortening his hurley and tapping to the net from close range. It took them fifteen more minutes to get their next score a point from play by Darragh O’Brien.

During that time Crotta had added seven, one from Mike Lynch and six from Shane Nolan one from play and the rest from placed balls. Michael O’Leary struck a point for O’Dorney and Cathal Dower had two frees to tie the game at 1-4 to 0-7 on twenty six minutes.

Crotta had two more points before half time and Abbeydorney had a goal and a point, the goal coming from Brendan O’Leary to make it 2-5 to 0-9 at halftime.

Crotta opened the second half scoring with a point from Shane Nolan. Abbeydorney rattled off six points in a row and looked to be cruising leading 2-10 to 0-10 points within ten minutes.

Shane Nolan drove over a point that was debated by umpires and linesman and then Crotta added a further six without reply, the lead was exchanged on a couple of occasions and full time ended in a draw Abbeydorney 2-12 Crotta O’Neills 0-18.

The action was fast and furious for the period of extra time but they could not be separated in the fading light- Abbeydorney did have two goal chances at the end but Shane Nolan brought it to another day with a free to make the final score Abbeydorney 2-16 Crotta 0-22.

PREVIEW: Will Lixnaw Or Causeway Emerge Triumphant On Sunday Evening?

Ulster Bank Insert

Causeway will have to be at their best to overcome Lixnaw in the Garveys Supervalu Kerry SHC first round game on Sunday says Mike O’Halloran…

lixnaw_v_causeway_6
Action from last year’s Lixnaw v Causeway clash in the championship.

Causeway and Lixnaw play the twilight game on Sunday in Lerrig, Causeway have come off a win in the 2015 County League where they defeated St Brendan’s by three points two weeks ago and are returning to Lerrig where they played their best hurling in one game last year.

At the launch of the Garveys SuperValu Hurling championship a few weeks ago most of the players who attended tipped Causeway to win the championship outright.

For the past number of years people have said “if Causeway could win one Championship they could win three or four in a row”.

Continued below…

KCFE Insert 1
.

Causeway have threatened to do great things over the past few years with some great performances in some games but were unable to continue their progression to the trophy bearing the name of one of their most famous club men.

Causeway have a whole host of players that have graced the inter county and colleges hurling scene but some how they have not been able to reach the Holy Grail.

They can call on the likes of Kerry stars Keith Carmody, Bryan Murphy, Thomas Casey and of course Colum Harty even though there is a doubt about his fitness as he retired injured in the final versus St Brendan’s, there are reports that up to five Causeway players are on the injured list for the game. There is also a doubt about the availability of the impressive dual star Brandon Barrett.

Causeway will need everybody fit and ready for the challenge posed by the powerful machine that is Lixnaw.

I saw Lixnaw playing Ballyduff recently and they looked really sharp even without Colin Sheehy and Shane Conway.

Stephen Power’s men will present a huge challenge to Causeway with the power they have at the back the reliability of Martin Stackpoole between the posts and the lethal forwards like Sheehy, the two Conway’s and James Flaherty.

Lixnaw have had huge success at underage in the past few years and can call on other young guns with loads of big match experience, the likes of Brendan Brosnan and John Buckley..

Expect Causeway to bring everything they have on the night and they get all the breaks. I don’t think they will have enough for Lixnaw.

BALLYHEIGUE and St Brendan’s is the second-match at Abbeydorney on Sunday coming at 4.30pm,  after the Kilmoyley V Ballyduff opener earlier that afternoon.

St Brendan’s return to the beautiful pitch that is presented at Abbeydorney to try to put the ghost of last year’s county final to rest.

I’m pretty sure that St Brendan’s will never be as poor again as they were in the final last year, where they lost their way very early on and were well beaten in the end by Kilmoyley.

Continued below…

Ashe Insert 1
.

St Brendan’s have a huge cohort of very successful players of varying ages from the likes of John Egan – whose name is usually prefixed by “The Great” –  to the Horgans and young Eric Leen.

St Brendan’s will not want any banana skins on the way to another final and a chance at redemption. In the county final last year, Kevin Hannafin was not introduced until very late, Cian Hussey was in his element two seasons ago when he starred in the championship and he now seems to have returned to his best in the past few weeks.

Darren Dineen will lord any area of the field he operates in.

St Brendan’s have the benefit of playing in a final already this year, when they were defeated by Causeway in the 2015 County League final two weeks ago. They had beaten Causeway a week or so earlier in a high-scoring game in Ardfert and they also accounted for Ballyduff.

St Brendan’s have had quality games in the run up to this encounter with Ballyheigue, who do not seem to me firing on all cylinders. This time last year they were pushing Kilmoyley to extra time in the North Kerry Championship, but two weeks ago they were a pale shadow of themselves when Kilmoyley smacked them all over the pitch.

There was an improvement in their fortunes later with a win over Lixnaw, which might point to an improvement in their form just at the right time.

Ballyheigue have not had much success at underage level in recent years and are dependent on the free taking abilities of Philip Lucid to get scores on the board.

Jason Casey will attempt to drive them from the back and Shane Dunne will be busy around the field with help from Tomas Casey, Mikey Halloran and Jason Griffin, but it will not be enough to overcome St Brendan’s.

PREVIEW: Champions Kilmoyley To Find It Tough Against Ballyduff This Sunday

On Sunday the championship action moves to the pristine pitch in Abbeydorney where Ballyduff take on Kilmoyley at 12 noon, this is a repeat of last year at this venue where Kilmoyley completely bossed the game at the end.

Ballyduff will argue that the injury to David Grady upset heir rhythm and maybe it did, but Kilmoyley also lost their talisman Tom Murnane and still went on to win.

Ballyduff had a win over Kilmoyley in the past couple of weeks but both had presented shadow teams that evening.

Ballyduff has new management this year and seem to be content with the way training is going. The Ballyduff squad is quite tight number-wise, perhaps numbering 23 or 24.

Michael Boyle is on fire in most games and ably assisted by younger players like Eoin Ross, Jack Goulding. There is also a very good chance that Paud Costello will line out, but the game will come a month too early for Padraigh Boyle.

Another big boost for Ballyduff is the return of PJ Gorman to the goalkeeping duties, not alone is he a great shot stopper but his puck out management is also vital.

Gary O’Brien, who starred in Lixnaw last year versus Crotta is training well, as is Aiden Boyle, two big men who will need to handle and distribute a lot of ball to their forwards in order to get over Kilmoyley.

I saw Kilmoyley play Ballyheigue recently and they looked extremely organised and full of confidence and endeavour. Admittedly, Ballyheigue were poor on the night, but the Kilmoyley system of play and distribution of the ball was very impressive.

Everybody knows the headline players Kilmoyley have at their disposal. If PJ Gorman is important for Ballyduff, Aiden McCabe is equally so for the champions.

Paudie O’Connor is back to his best this year after the knee injury he sustained kept him on the side line until late in the championship last year.

Daniel Collins, Dougie Fitzell, Tom Murnane will not let the Neilus Flynn stray from Togher Bán without a massive struggle.

If Ballyduff don’t win the championship this year, it will be quite a while before they will be in contention due to the lack of underage success.  So it’s now or not for a while for Ballyduff. I think they might just do it.

PREVIEW: Crotta And Abbeydorney Do Battle In Kerry SHC Opener This Saturday

Our hurling writer, Mike O’Halloran, is looking forward to a competitive few months of hurling action, as the Garveys Supervalu Kerry SHC gets underway this Saturday night with Crotta O’Neills taking on Abbeydorney…

Crotta’s Jordan Conway (seen here in action against Kilmoyley last year) will be a key man this Saturday.

An overview of the Championship would suggest that it is wide open this year and so it seems with very little between the teams.

I would suggest that it is between Kilmoyley, Lixnaw, St Brendan’s and Abbeydorney, but we will know more at around 8.30pm on Sunday evening.

The first round games are being played in North Kerry with the final in the redeveloped Austin Stack Park. The North Kerry clubs did a wonderful job last season and I’m sure they will be even more organised this year.

I’m looking forward to the hurling fare and looking forward to the Mikados and sugary tae.

The Garveys SuperValu Kerry Senior Hurling Championship begins on Saturday at 7pm in Ballyduff, where near neighbours Crotta O’Neills and Abbeydorney will open the weekend action.

Abbeydorney will not have great memories of their last visit to Ballyduff in last year’s championship; on a windy evening when they were beaten by Kilmoyley after conceding handy enough goals.

Abbeydorney come into the championship this year with a determined air of confidence about them. They have defeated Ballyduff and drawn with Kilmoyley, only to lose after extra time. While these results are significant, even more significant is the large scores they are amassing in games.

Adding to the new determination are the twin towers of the O’Leary brothers, the silken ball distribution of PJ Keane and the hard work of James O’Connor.

Crotta O’Neills came within a whisker of progressing in last year’s competition when they had a chance to defeat Ballyduff…but didn’t.

Crotta need to build on their efforts from the last few years. There is huge work being done underage in the club and success at senior level needs to drive the ambition of the underage players.

Shane Nolan will again be the key man, but the other big star on the O’Neills team these days is the great youngster Jordan Conway who starred for the Kerry seniors each time he played this year.

Sean Weir, the other Kerry panellist who seemed to fall down the rankings with the Kerry hurling selectors, will have a point to prove.

I expect that Abbeydorney will not want to leave “the home of hurling” without a win this time and if their high scoring form continues on Saturday evening, they should have enough to just about pip Crotta O’Neills.
