The festival, founded by Kerry iconic footballer Páidi Ó Sé, has attracted over 15,000 club players over 30 years and has grown into a major international GAA event with senior, intermediate and junior competitions as well as teams attending cultural and social events at Comórtas HQ, Páidí Ó Sé’s pub in Ventry, Co. Kerry.

There is some stiff opposition in the Dermot Earley senior men’s cup with Westmeath’s Rosemount back to defend their 2018 title against local sides An Daingean, Milltown Castlemaine and An Ghaeltacht while newcomers including Laois’s Portarlington and Éire Óg Inis of Clare will be attempting to leave their mark on this historic year.

Also competing at senior level is Cork’s Knocknagree, who won the Comórtasintermediate final two years ago, setting them on their winning ways to All-Ireland Intermediate Club final victory in Croke Park later that season.

There are 11 Kerry teams competing in total. Apart from the senior Kerry clubs, the intermediate men’s clubs include Annascaul, Lispole, Cromane and Renard.  The intermediate ladies’ competition sees Austin Stacks and Corca Dhuibhne togging out while John Mitchel’s and Dingle Ladies line out in the Junior Ladies competition.

The football festival will also host nightly free music and entertainment which is open to the general public and a Saturday Night Players Banquet at the Comórtas marquee at Páidi Ó Sé’s pub in Ard a’ Bhóthair , Ventry

Comórtas Chairman Pádraig Óg Ó Sé said; “We are delighted with the response to our 30th anniversary Comórtas with 17 counties represented, the largest amount in our history.  The support of local host clubs is crucial in ensuring we can maintain such a high number of teams and we thank them for their co-operation.”

Michael Collins, Regional Manager, Lidl Ireland said; “We are delighted to continue our partnership with this year’s Comortas Peile Paidi O Se. Our store teams in Dingle and Tralee are proud to support the Comortas Peile Paidi O Se and we are all looking forward to the festival of Gaelic Football ahead.”

A DOCUMENTARY about the life of the late Páidí Ó Sé which recently won an award at the Celtic Media Festival 2015 in Inverness, Scotland, is to be shown again this Friday at 7.30pm on TG4.

It coincides with the unveiling of his statue outside his pub in Ventry this Saturday.

‘Páidí Ó Sé – Rí an Pharóiste’ took the most coveted of all the Torc awards at the recent Celtic Media Festival 2015 in Inverness, the Spirit of the Festival Award, for the best programme in a Celtic language.

The documentary -shown originally in December 2013 – tells the story of the footballing legend, showman and the man considered by many to be the uncrowned king of his native parish of Ventry.

It’s a personal account and portrait of Páidí’s life story, as told from the perspective of his own rural Gaeltacht community and authored by one of his neighbours, Louise Ní Fhiannachta, as she embarks on a personal voyage of discovery to attempt to come to grips with her own hero while also exploring the importance we vest in receiving recognition from our own people.

In this creative documentary film, Páidí Ó Sé’s true nature will be revealed by those closest to him. This film also explores the concept of heroism and the importance of receiving recognition from our own tribe in the context of Páidí’s life and story – the pressure on the hero’s shoulders, the culture of weakness as a flaw, the soul searching that begins once the star of fame has fallen.

The competition is centered around the Dingle peninsula, with matches also set for Dingle, Castlegregory, Gallarus, Annascaul and Lispole.

The competition has attracted over 10,000 club players since it began in 1989. It has grown into a major international GAA event with senior, intermediate and junior clubs travelling this year from 11 different counties as well as Madrid, Brussels and parts of England.

The festival of football also includes nightly music and entertainment and an annual photographic exhibition.

Páidí Ó Sé sadly passed away in December 2012, he collected eight All-Ireland senior winning medals with Kerry and captained the county to All-Ireland glory in 1985. The Ventry native would also go on to manage two Kerry All-Ireland winning teams in 1997 and 2000.
