Repeal The 8th Campaigners Light Up Courthouse Steps

Kerry for Choice Repeal Pumpkins Candles
The pumpkins and candles lighting up the steps of Tralee Courthouse yesterday evening.

FOR those of you passing the Courthouse last night, you may have been wondering what all the pumpkins and candles were doing on the steps.

Well, it was Kerry for Choice in collaboration with Kerry Knicker Collective who placed 12 pumpkins and 56 candles there to highlight the 12 Irish women a day and 56 Kerry women in 2015 who travelled to England to access abortion services.

Kerry for Choice chairperson said: “Last week the Government voted down Ruth Coppinger TD’s Private Members Bill calling for a referendum to repeal the 8th. The Government continue to put the lives of women and pregnant people at risk while they wring their hands and hide behind the stalling exercise that is the Citizens’ Assembly. Our women and pregnant people deserve better.

We call on our elected representatives to demand an immediate referendum to repeal the 8th, to finally put to rest the spectre of the 8th so we can care for our women and people with wanted and crisis pregnancies, in a manner that affirms their right to bodily autonomy and their right to choose what happens to them during pregnancy.”

Kerry for Choice are planning an open meeting on Wednesday, November 9 in The Abbey Inn Bar, Tralee at 8pm to facilitate an open discussion on the  Repeal the 8th Amendment to the constitution.

The meeting will be addressed by Tara Flynn, writer and actor, Dr Maeve Mahon-Ferriter of Doctors for Choice, Vanessa O’Sullivan of The Abortion Rights Campaign and Paula Dennan of Kerry for Choice. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

Group To Begin ‘Travelling Tea-Party’ Repeal The 8th Amendment Discussions

THE ‘Travelling Tea-Party’ taking place this weekend, is the first in a series of artist-led, socially-engaged events by artist Tricia O’Connor.

The aim of this series of tea-parties is to promote dialogue around the Repeal of the 8th Amendment and Abortion Rights in Ireland. Both Pro-Life and Pro-Choice views are welcome.

The first tea-party will be this Saturday between 3:30pm and 5pm in Collis Sandes House, Killeen.

In what is a novel way of recording the meetings, at each tea-party extracts from what has been discussed will be printed onto the inside of a teacup.

It is hoped this visual cue will give the impression that you are eavesdropping on a previous conversation that was had within the group.

By recording the conversations on teacups, Tricia will begin to create an archive of the lived experience of men and women who have been affected by issues surrounding Abortion Rights In Ireland.

Abortion rights campaigners in Ireland are currently gathering signatures to call for a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment to the constitution of Ireland.
