Chairman of Tidy Tralee Together, Joe Moynihan, paid tribute to the volunteers who give so much of their time to ensure Tralee maintained its gold medal status for six years in a row. He also called for more people to get involved in the effort.

Mayor of Tralee, Norma Foley, echoed these sentiments and expressed a sincere thank you on behalf of the people of Tralee to the volunteers.

“As a town, we owe so much to the few, who do so much for the many. There are few people doing the work that would be so much easier if there were many more doing it,” she said. The full list of winners in all categories is below all the photos…

AFTER an amazing year of successes, Tidy Tralee Together, are asking the community to unite once more to maintain the high standards achieved and go for gold again this year.

In 2015, Tralee was the proud winner of a gold medal in both the Tidy Towns and the prestigious European wide Entente Florale competition.

Tidy Tralee Together, are asking people to build on those successes and volunteer to clean the streets for an hour every Thursday evening, from now until September.

“It’s fantastic to get recognition because Tralee has cleaned up a lot in the last few years,” said Joe Moynihan of Tidy Tralee Together.

“If you walk around town now today, you can see that there is hardly no litter around the place, it’s a great credit to everyone involved. The most important thing is education with the kids. We’re getting there, but it’s taking time,” he said.

The biggest issue, Tidy Tralee Together face is picking up litter that has been discarded on the street whether it be by pedestrians or by people throwing rubbish out their car windows.

There’s also the issue of public dumping.  It’s feared by some, with the recent changes in pricing and how waste is collected in Tralee, it may lead to a rise of illegal dumping.

“I don’t think that’s going to be an issue really. Waste companies have to make a living too and I think most people will continue to dispose of their rubbish properly,” said Joe.

The group will be taking part in the big Spring Clean-up this weekend beginning at McDonalds car park, Rathass at 9.30am this Saturday morning with gloves, bags and litter pickers provided for all volunteers.

Tidy Towns Gold: ‘The Secret Has Been The Team Effort’

Marking Tralee's retention of their Tidy Towns Gold Medal at Denny Street on Tuesday afternoon were Mayor of Tralee, Jim Finucane with Tralee Tidy Towns Kit Ryan, Anne Connolly, Tommy McDonnell, Richard Moloney, Pat Galvin, Terry Nammock, Josephine Griffin, Mary O'Brien, Danny Moynihan, Brendan Murphy and John Griffin, Tourism Officer with Kerry County Council. EVERYBODY involved with Tralee Tidy Towns is still celebrating yesterday’s great result which saw the town increase its mark by five to 303 and retain its Gold Medal status.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Mayor of Tralee and those involved in the effort gathered for a photo to mark the achievement and TraleeToday.ie spoke to some of the people involved about the success.

“It’s a great achievement altogether,” said Mary O’Brien of Tralee Tidy Towns group. “We’d like to thank the businesses and all the people who helped us. They’re getting to understand that we have to keep the town tidy if we’re going to get anything. Everybody was so good. We’re waiting for the result from the Entente Florale judges now, so please God that’ll be good too,” said Mary, who has been with the group for the past 28 years.

“It’s great to have that consistency,”  said Mayor of Tralee, Jim Finucane. “It’s important for the presentation of the town, it’s important that it’s seen as attractive and we’re maintaining that standard. We can reach even further heights, with the same type of co-operation we’ve had up to now,” said the Mayor.

“It’s a wonderful achievement to think that in ten years Tralee has doubled its mark in the Tidy Towns,” said Kerry County Council Tourism Officer and Tralee native, John Griffin.

“It’s gone from the bottom quarter to the top quarter in that period of time. I think the secret of it has been the team effort. Towards A Better Tralee brought all the groups together – the Council, the voluntary sector, Tralee Chamber Alliance, FAS, Tidy Tralee and the residents associations,” said John.

“There are four Kerry towns with Gold Medals now and no other county has that,” he said.

A fantastic achievement by all involved and who knows, in two weeks time when the Entente Florale judges give their verdict on the town, we could be celebrating again.

What The Tidy Towns Judges Said About Tralee…

A lot of work went into retaining Tralee’s Gold Medal status announced earlier today and this was acknowledged in the report from the judges.

Here are just some of the comments they made regarding their visit to town.

“There is a wonderful streetscape in Tralee where we enjoy lots of shops, offices and Victorian architecture, and it was delightful to see the business houses busy.

A few lovely churches are admired notably the distinctive old style Church of Ireland with special lawns and shrubs, St John’s church is outstanding with brilliant landscaping, then there is the modern Our Lady and St Brendan’s with excellent lawns, shrubs and large parking area.

Ashe Street contains the substantial Court House with the war memorials; it is an imposing and elegant building and across the road we see Kerry Protestant Hall and it’s for sale and advertised as a landmark office building, but it is in need of some attention, and nearby the splendid Credit Union stands out.

entente_tidy_13
The Snackery and That’s Perfect came in for praise from the Tidy Towns judges.

The Mall is a hub of activity and we find here three large shopping outlets; Shaws, Lifestyle Sports and Penney’s, and none of them had any floral decoration like the lovely smaller outlets Quinlin’s Fish and Chips, That’s Perfect and The Snackery Grill Bar.

Nearby Connolly’s Jewellers catch the eye. Around the corner we came across SuperValu under the clock and O’Ceilleachair hardware selling everything from a needle to an anchor.

Other places of interest were Murphy’s off licence and Coisceim Natural Beauty Centre. But there are lots of other shops just as good as the ones outlined.

I did not find Turner’s Lounge, but we congratulate them for the presentation of the tidiest and best looking business in Tralee, and that is a fantastic achievement.

It was a special treat to visit Siamsa Tíre house and the wonderful Museum and a trip to the Aqua Dome was memorable.

The two hospitals are very well presented with excellent car parking and landscaping. Kerry Community Services are housed in a large modern structure, but in the cobbled enclosure there was an extensive amount of small weeds.

Aldi looks very well and has an extensive car park with good trees and shrubs and in further we admire Dunnes  great brick faced shop front; it has an extensive car park at the back and I felt a few trees and shrubs could be added to freshen up the large space.

I could only visit a few of the 50 or so residents estates and I found them to be neat and orderly. The Tralee Together is doing great work in co-ordinating the activities of resident’s association’s member estates. The supply of 5,000 summer bedding plants surely brings out the best in the flora of the areas.

We admire many lovely terraces of town houses and the terrace on Urban Street is a good example. There is a selection of well appointed apartments
in Main Street.

You have splendid Victorian Houses. On the outskirts we admire splendid bungalows and two storey houses that have excellent displays of shrubs, lawns, trees and flowers.

There is a lovely children’s playground in the Rose Garden to cater for the many children of the area.

The bypass makes a great difference to the flow of traffic in Tralee, and in around the town centre the one-way  systems are working well, and attractive bollards are used to good effect. There are good car parks all over the town  to cater for the huge amount of traffic on the roads. Good quality footpaths stretch for miles for the pedestrians.

We found some well defined cycle lanes that had plenty cyclists on the go.”

CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge.

THE clock is ticking towards the time when a group of judges will arrive in Tralee to consider if the town should be the champion of Europe in the Entente Florale 2014.

There’s only one month to go to the big day – July 31 is when Tralee will be scrutinised as part of the international Tidy Towns Competition that aims to promote a greener and more pleasant environment in European towns and villages.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our town and its facilities, and the brilliant and talented people who live here,” said CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge.

“The winning of a Silver or Gold medal in this prestigious competition would attract international attention and provide a stimulus for tourism and job creation. Potentially, it could be worth millions in the long run and the only thing that the people of Tralee need to do is to make sure the town is looking at its best to creative a winning impression on the Judges,” said Kieran.

The Judges will arrive in Tralee on Wednesday July 30th and the judging will take place on Thursday July 31st after a welcome event in The Square.

They can visit any part of the town but the prescribed judging route is the Castleisland approach, Manor West Retail Park, Killerisk Road, Manor Village, Castlemorris, Ballymullen, Clonmore Road, Dean’s Lane, Tobar Naofa, Moyderwell Primary School, Moyderwell/Boherbee, Upper Castle Street, St John’s Avenue, Town Park, Denny Street, Lower Castle Street, Ashe Street, The Mall, Bridge Street, The Square, Dominic Street, Denny Lane, Kerry County Museum, Siamsa Tíre Theatre, Ivy Terrace, Princes Quay, Blennerville, Ballyard Road, Tralee Bay Wetlands, Dan Spring Road, Ballymullen, Killerisk Road and Rathass.

“We appeal to business owners and residents in these areas to make an extra special effort to ensure their business premises or homes are in a clean, tidy and well maintained condition,” said Kieran Ruttledge.

The addition of a flower box or basket would be an additional bonus. The checklist below may helpful and ask yourself if you need to:

• Remove weeds/residue dust/debris/litter from your own entrance
• Remove/replace excess/redundant signage/damaged signage
• Replace, wash/paint/store away/empty bins
• Sweep/wash/scrub down the footpaths outside your entrance
• Clean/paint the entrance walls, railings and fences
• Trim/prune/replace any hedges, trees and shrubs
• Mow, weed or feed your lawn
• Encourage family members, neighbours and customers to join the Tralee Entente Florale effort

Kieran Ruttledge paid tribute to everyone on the Tralee Entente Florale Team who have already been busy with the preparations for the judging process.

Anyone who wishes to get involved in the project can do so by contacting Tralee Chamber Alliance, 18 Denny Street, Tralee or email info@Tralee.ie.

Lower Rock Street Clean-Up Planned For This Thursday Morning

TRALEE Tidy Towns committee have announced details of their new business clean street campaign.

A different business street in the centre of Tralee will be targeted each Thursday morning starting this Thursday, June 19, when we will see businesses from Lower Rock Street, provide a staff member to come out between 10.30am – 11am to clean outside their business.

This will entail removing any weeds, built up of dust and debris, perhaps tackling the pavement directly outside their businesses removing some gum, cigarette butts, scrubbing stains etc.

Tralee Tidy Towns will supply high-vis jackets, gloves, some tools, litter bags and moral support. The idea is to complement the volunteer litter picking efforts on Thursday evenings by Tralee Tidy Towns.

“It needs a concerted effort on everyone’s part to achieve a nice clean town,” say Tralee Tidy Towns. “Please feel free if you have a business, as many have already done, to weed and clean your steps, wash down your entrance, look down at your basements, power hose down algae, see if you can smarten up your paint work, polish your windows etc.”

“You can do a lot in 30 minutes; you can do so much more if it is done regularly. Tralee Tidy Towns is a volunteer not for profit organisation. Volunteers do work with our organisation not because they have to but because they want to live in a nice town which they can be proud of,” ready the statement from Tralee Tidy Towns.
