.

Here is a contribution from a student from Tralee VTOS who was asked to complete the “What VTOS Means to Me” exercise.

“WHAT VTOS MEANS TO ME”

As my time with VTOS nears an end
I think it’s fair to say …
It was not what I expected …..
It surpassed in every way
Such choices at your fingertips
Support at every turn….
With expert advice to recognise, the strengths you need to learn

There’s “something” here for “everyone”’
The tools that you require …
And IF you believe, you CAN achieve ….
Whate’er your hearts’ desire!

Math minded maybe not ? Computer skills forgot?
Do not despair ..help is everywhere
So do not lose the plot !!!!

Communicate, art designs create, health & fitness ..just a few
Not to mention outdoor activities ……
And throw in a 700 piece jigsaw too !!!!

But the friendships forged amongst us all
Was for me what mattered most of all💕
Each day was full of cheer and laughter
With memories I’ll cherish from hereon after …..

So as I bid VTOS adieu .. my heartfelt thanks to all of you
For giving me the opportunity
To be part of your VTOS family …
As my lifelong dream I now embrace …
This is just the first chapter… so WATCH this space !!!!!

‘Tralee VTOS Can Press The Restart Button On Your Education’

.
Joan Griffin.

With Tralee VTOS hosting an Open Day next Thursday, Joan Griffin, a First Year student at the service, says it has given her a focus on where she wants her education to progress…

When I discovered VTOS, it was my intention to press the restart and update button on my education.

It had been many years since I was last in a classroom environment, so this was the perfect stepping stone.

I draw the parallel with updating a computer because we all here in VTOS have had some form of educational background — for example junior or leaving certificate — but for whatever reason it meant that our education ceased there.

When we restart and update a computer we are adding new information to the existing device, or in our case, we are restarting and updating our education.

I have learned so much from my time at VTOS and it has given me a focus on where I want my education to progress.

I am learning in a relaxed adult classroom environment and I am evaluating all of my new opportunities for progression.

It has also helped me with organisation and formed a stable routine to incorporate my learning.  I have formed new friendships and a great understanding of working as part of a team.

We have a great comradery as we are all equal in the adult education experience because we are all there for the same reason, to better ourselves.

It has given me a new confidence that I can achieve much more when I apply myself and focus.

So in conclusion, I would be a huge advocate for VTOS.  In our current global crisis VTOS will emerge as important as ever.

The inevitability is that many will lose jobs and require returning to adult education to retrain and upskill.  It has great teachers who have a vast experience in adult education that make the educational journey much more enjoyable.

When I move on to the next level of my education I know I will look back and be grateful for the stepping stone that it has provided me in progressing further.

So if I was to suggest a motto for VTOS it would as I mentioned at the start “press the restart and update button on your education”

Eleanor’s Glad She Did The Leaving Cert With Tralee VTOS

.
Eleanor Fitzgerald.

Eleanor Fitzgerald says going back to do her Leaving Cert at Tralee VTOS was the best decision she could have made…

I left main stream school when I was 16 years old and at that time went into full time employment.

For a long time I thought about going back to education, so in 2010 I started in VTOS in Tralee, it was a two year Leaving Cert programme.

It was the best decision I ever made and in 2012 I completed the Leaving Cert.  The course was invaluable and the staff were so helpful and had a genuine interest in helping each student to achieve their potential.

The course prepared me for further education and after completing the Leaving Cert, I attended Kerry College of Further Education and most recently I completed a Bachelors of Science (HONS) in Mental Health Nursing in the IT Tralee.

I am currently working as a staff nurse with the HSE, which I believe would not have been possible without the help and guidance I received while studying at VTOS Tralee.

Former Tralee VTOS student Trina Houlihan explains the effect doing a course has had on her life…

Trina Houlihan.

I left school after my inter cert and started working.  After 27 years I took voluntary redundancy and I wanted to improve my skills and employability opportunities.

VTOS was the perfect choice and I completed a business award.  It was through the encouragement of staff I gained the confidence to go on to IT Tralee and do two degree courses in Business & Travel & Tourism Management.

I now work in Kerry County Museum and am in my dream job.

Mary O’Flaherty says returning to education at Tralee VTOS gave her new possibilities for the future…

“Almost 10 years ago l found myself unemployed and as l had left school at thirteen l got the opportunity to return to education with Tralee VTOS.

This was a fulltime two year course.  While I enjoyed the course there were tough days where l thought l wouldn’t complete certain aspects but the support and guidance of the teachers and colleagues helped me achieve my goal.

Now that my QQI certification is complete, I have achieved my personal goal of completing my second level education.  I am now in employment that I enjoy.

On a personal and professional level VTOS has opened new doors and new possibilities for my future.”

Maura Was Learning While Laughing At Tralee VTOS

Former Tralee VTOS student, Maura Sheehy, winner of the Florist of the Year at the Irish Wedding Awards 2018, writes of her experience of returning to education…

Studying in VTOS Tralee was a very positive experience for me.  The first thing that springs to mind when I fondly look back at my days there is the fun we had.

We definitely spent more time laughing than learning but somehow the work also got done!

Meeting people from different cultures, sharing their life experiences broadened by mind and allowed me to build my confidence.

Returning to formal education can be daunting especially after so many years out of the workforce.

Tralee VTOS was very welcoming and I received great support to complete my studies.  One of my favourite things about studying in Tralee VTOS was the diversity of culture it offered.  I met people from different cultures, a great mix of students.

After leaving Tralee VTOS, I used the skills I learned to set up my own business called ‘Maura’s Cottage Flowers’.

It helped me to have confidence to meet with people, to promote and grow my business.  Also, I am now involved in making presentations to groups, writing gardening articles and promoting outdoor classrooms in the Farmer’s Journal.

It’s still not easy but I am now better able to cope after my VTOS experience.

I would highly recommend VTOS Tralee to all.  It provided a safe environment to build confidence.  I met lovely people of different ages from many different countries.

.

Tara Conway tells her story about how Tralee VTOS set her on the way to a new career…

Returning to education can be daunting for any adult, especially when school never suited them.

I left school when I was in 5th year, my school reports always said ‘giddy in class and lacks concentration’. In my mid to late teens I couldn’t engage in school life as my focus was elsewhere, so I believed getting a job was better suited to me.

As I got older and more mature, I realised that education had a lot more to offer than I earlier anticipated.

Not only in terms of job opportunity, but in terms of self-fulfilment. In my early twenties I decided to return to education and complete my Leaving Cert.

I contacted Tralee VTOS through an advert I saw in the local paper and attended a meeting with the course co-ordinator. Thus my journey in education recommenced.

This entailed a two year programme which culminated in my completion of the Leaving Certificate. While in VTOS I was reacquainted with study skills, introduced to a structured programme of study and provided with exceptional support and encouragement throughout my time in VTOS.

It was a moment of great satisfaction when I successfully completed my Leaving Cert at the age of 23, without VTOS guidance this would not have been possible.

After completing the Leaving Certificate, I returned to work and time went by as it does!

In my early thirties I once again decided to go back to education and completed a primary degree (Hons) in the Institute of Technology Tralee.

I am now in the process of completing a Post Grad Diploma in adult education in Mary Immaculate College.

As part of that I am once again back in VTOS, where I am completing my Teaching Practice.  The circle has been completed and it is a pleasure and a privilege to once again return to VTOS and avail of their support and encouragement from the vantage point of the top of the classroom!

It’s a particular pleasure to reacquaint myself with the same teachers as when I first entered VTOS all those years ago.

Much of what I have achieved in my academic and working life is down to the support, guidance and encouragement I received from Tralee VTOS back then and I continue to receive it today.

For all of that and much more I am deeply grateful to all the wonderful teaching staff at Tralee VTOS. For more on Tralee VTOS and what they can offer, please click here

The information morning, which was hosted by the students at the centre in Clash, gave information on the two year Leaving Cert course, Level 3 General Learning, Level 4 Employment Skills and General Learning.

“We’ve invited people to come to view the centre, meet our students, see some of the work on display and generally see what’s on offer,” said Mary Sheehy.

“It’s a good time for people to find out what’s on offer as it’s coming to the end of an academic year and they’re trying to make a decision about August or September.”

“VTOS is an excellent stepping stone for people who want to get some skills, to get confidence, to get back their self-esteem. We have people who have been out of education for 20 years. We have assessments beforehand to see which level they’re at and how they can progress through the levels,” said Mary.

TRALEE VTOS graduates enjoyed a celebration barbecue on Wednesday night before their annual awards ceremony on Wednesday night.

VTOS, which facilitates a return to education for adult learners, held their awards night for both leaving cert and QQI level graduates who were presented with their certificates.

“Some of our students are still with us, but the night is also a great opportunity to catch up with past students to see how their doing,” said VTOS Course Co-ordinator, Mary Sheehy.

VTOS has been serving the community for 26 years. Formerly based in Moyderwell, the service has been in Clash, adjacent to the IT Tralee North Campus, for the past ten years.

“Some of them will have gone on to the Kerry College of Further Education, some of them to IT Tralee and one or two have gone on to university. So it’s their chance to come back and share their success story with us to let the students here now what’s ahead of them.”

Around 40 past and present students of VTOS received certs on the night. There was a special award for Tom Reidy who won student of the year.

The service is affectionately called “second chance education”. It’s for any adult who wishes to return to full time education that’s unemployed. The service has two roles, it gives people the confidence, skills and abilities to cope with going on with further training and also it’s a filter for people who want to go on and achieve at third level education and university.

“If people haven’t been to school for years, they can come here for a year or two years and they’re flying – it’s very important. We like to set people up for success, maybe they might not have had good experiences of school, so we wipe all those negatives and replace them with positives,” said Mary.
