A TRALEE woman who ran 12 marathons in eight months in aid of a hospital last month is to run two in just over a day in September.

Brenda Doody from Curraheen will run two miles in 26 different counties in a 26-hour period on September 24 to raise funds for the Mercy Hospital in Cork as part of the Back 2 Back Challenge.

Last year Brenda was named The Mercy Stars Hero of the Year, recognising her for the marathon challenge she took on following her husband Pat’s cancer journey at the Mercy.

In May 2014 Pat was diagnosed by Mr Tom Murphy with oesophageal cancer, and underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy and had an oesophagectomy.

As a thank you to Consultant Mr Murphy and his team for helping her husband, Brenda committed to running 12 marathons in eight months, starting in March and finishing in October 2015, in order to raise funds for The Mercy.

Now Brenda is looking for people to join her on her journey with many other runners. Everyone will travel together by bus to each of the 26 counties where they will run 2 miles. The aim is to arrive back to Cork within the 26 hours and run the last two miles.

This challenge will raise funds for a new Fluoroscopy X-ray Unit for the Mercy Hospital’s Centre for Gastroenterology which will assist doctors in staging and treating patients with tumours in the oesophagus, stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver.

Every registrant must raise at least €350. The registration fee is €50 so a further €300 needs to be raised. To do this, the organisers recommend people create their own fundraising page so that friends and family near and far can sponsor them online.

It’s easy to do, follow this link to set up the online fundraising page: fundraise.mercyfundraising.ie/. You can also request a Mercy Hospital Foundation sponsorship card when registering.
