IT was Wellbeing and Stand Up Week in Mercy Mounthawk last week, with a variety of workshops, talks, concerts and activities arranged throughout.

One of the highlights of the week was a flashmob event on Thursday during the morning break.

Junior cycle artistic performance students and a group of 6th year students gathered together in front of a crowded general purpose area of students and teachers with the aim of spreading the simple message to the school community: To treat people with kindness.

The purpose was to promote empathy, kindness and tolerance in the school community said Christine Ryan, artistic performance teacher and choreographer of the event.

“I am so incredible proud of the 150 students who participated in this flashmob. Some of these students had never performed before so to have the courage to dance  in front of their own peers and to highlight such an important message had me bursting with pride,” she said.

“The students worked so hard in preparing this performance and felt strongly about the message they wanted to spread.  Large LGBTQ+ flags were waved high in the air, and and affirming banners and signs of kindness and positivity were marched in stride throughout the performance,” added Christine.

“It’s a testament to the management to facilitate a performance like this to happen in our school. It creates an inclusive environment for all of our students whilst also consolidating our core values: Treior, tuiscint & trocaire. (Guidance, understanding & compassion,” concluded Christine.
