REPORT: Kerry FC And Longford Town Share The Points

.

David Moriarty reports on Kerry FC’s draw away from home last night in Longford…

LONGFORD TOWN 2-2 KERRY FC

Kerry FC returned to League of Ireland action on Saturday evening as they took on Longford Town in Bishopsgate.

The last time the two faced each other in the midlands Longford took the three points on the May Bank Holiday Monday with goals from Francis Campbell, Luke Wade Slater and a fantastic acrobatic consolation goal from Ryan Kelliher.

Kerry FC were in high spirits coming into the game after a dramatic second-round FAI Cup tie last weekend against Bohemians which the Dublin side won on penalties.

Bohemians will play UCD away in the quarter-final, but the country noticed the Kerry FC team’s desire and heart on the day.

Continued below…

.

Longford Town are struggling in their centenary year in the League of Ireland as they sit bottom four points adrift of the Kingdom in ninth. A win in Bishopsgate would do the home side a world of good as they look to finish the final quarter of the season strongly.

Kerry FC came out of the traps the fastest and it was evident when they took the lead in the eleventh minute thanks to Ethan Kos. A corner was whipped into the area by Cian Brosnan and Kos rose highest to get on the end of the cross to put Kerry FC ahead.

As time went on, Longford grew into the game and had slightly more possession than Kerry but were unable to create much with it.

That was until the twenty-first minute just ten minutes after Kerry took the lead when Longford would equalise through Francis Campbell. It was a goal made by Mohammed Boudiaf who used great trickery to get into the box and get a shot away.

Continued below…

.

Aaron O’Sullivan did very well to keep the initial shot out but could not keep the follow-up at bay as Campbell tapped home for the equaliser.

As the half went on the game became quite scrappy with both sides giving up possession very easily in threatening attacking areas.

Cian Brosnan had a couple of decent chances before the close of the first forty-five with his first being a powerful shot that went wide of Harry Halwax’s right-hand post.

The second was a snapshot just outside the area that hit the top of the crossbar but unfortunately was not accurate enough to trouble the Longford shot-stopper.

Francis Campbell came closest for Longford as they took the reins of the second half from early on with a couple of half-decent chances.

Campbell had an audacious overhead kick and a header go over the crossbar just six minutes after each other. Kerry were struggling to create much and found it hard to get into the opposition’s box to threaten them.

The longer that Kerry went without chances it would only be a matter of time before Longford would pounce and take the lead.

They did just that in the seventy-second minute through an unbelievable scissors kick from Mohammed Boudiaf.

The ball came into the area and without thinking the Town attacker threw his body behind it and the ball nestled into the back of the net in a truly magnificent fashion.

With Kerry FC doing very little to counter the Longford Town pressing it felt as if it would be another typical night in the office for the Kerry FC men but they stuck at it and got an equaliser through Ryan Kelliher just ten minutes after Longford took the lead.

Brilliant feet and skill from Daniel Okwute on the right wing opened space for himself to put the ball in low across the box for Kelliher who was there as usual to put away the chance at hand.

Both sides pressed to find a winner in what would turn out to be an entertaining final ten or so minutes but the points were shared as it finished in a two-all draw.

Kerry would be happy to come away from Longford with a point for the first time and now look forward to the visit of the UCD students next Friday in Mounthawk Park.

LONGFORD TOWN TEAM: 1. HARRY HALWAX, 2. SHANE ELWORTHY (C), 4. HAMIE EGAN, 6. ROSS FAY, 10. ERIC YORO, 12. DANIEL NORRIS, 15. EMRE TOPCU, 18. KARL CHAMBERS, 19. MOHAMMED BOUDIAF (GOAL ‘72), 22. FRANCIS CAMPBELL (GOAL ‘21), 27. DEAN O’SHEA.

Know Your Rights: Penalty Points For Driving Offences

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Ireland uses penalty points to enforce the rules of the road and improve road safety. If you commit a motoring offence, and the penalty for the offence includes penalty points, your driving licence will be endorsed with one or more penalty points.

Some traffic offences have other penalties, such as fines as well as penalty points. While penalty points are endorsed on your driving licence, the points do not physically appear on the licence.

Your penalty points are recorded on your driving licence record, which is held on the National Vehicle and Driver File operated by the Department of Transport.

Continued below…

.

Penalty point endorsements remain on your licence record for 3 years and must be notified to your insurance company when applying for motor insurance. Endorsements on your licence record will often lead to an increase in your motor insurance premium.

How do penalty points work?

Penalty points are recorded on your driving licence when you are convicted in court of a driving offence that attracts penalty points or you pay a fixed charge notice that was issued to you for an offence that also carries penalty points

If you get 12 penalty points in any 3 year period, you are automatically disqualified from driving for 6 months. Learner permit drivers are disqualified if they have 7 penalty points. This lower threshold also applies for the first 2 years of a driver’s first full driving licence.

What are the rules in relation to fixed charge and penalty offences?

Fixed notice penalties are issued for driving offences that attract penalty points and/or just a fine.

If you receive a fixed notice penalty, you will be issued a notice by the Department of Transport.

If you pay the fixed charge fine within 56 days, you will get a further notice from the Department of Transport confirming that the penalty points will be added to your driving licence. The penalty points will be added to your licence 28 days after that.

If you do not pay the fixed charge fine within 56 days, you will get a summons to appear in the District Court.

If you are convicted of a driving offence in court, the court will notify the Department of Transport of the number of penalty points attached to that conviction.

The Department of Transport will then issue a notification that these penalty points will be added to your driving licence 28 days after the notification date.

Continued below…

.

How long do penalty points stay on my licence?

Penalty points remain on your licence record for 3 years. Any period where your licence is out of date or you are serving a court disqualification does not count as part of the 3 years.

If you accumulate 12 points or 7 where applicable and are disqualified from driving for 6 months, the points which led to the disqualification are removed at the end of the 6 months.

But if you had more offences that had not been endorsed on your licence record by the time you started your 6 month suspension, these extra points would be added to your licence record and would remain on your licence for 3 years (from the time your licence was reinstated).

What happens to my licence if I have 12 penalty points or 7 where applicable?

If you have been notified by the Department of Transport that you have been disqualified from driving because you have reached 12 penalty points or more, you must surrender your driving licence to the National Driver Licence Service for the period of 6 months.

What motoring offences result in penalty points?

The Road Traffic Act 2002, as amended, legislates for motoring offences that incur penalty points. The Road Safety Authority maintains an up-to-date list of penalty point motoring offences.

Examples of how penalty points and fines are awarded.

Speeding offences: A fixed charge fine of €160, together with 3 penalty points. If you have been caught speeding on a police traffic camera, you will get a notice of your fine and penalty points for the offence by post. You have 28 days in which to pay your fine from the date the notice is issued to you.

If you do not pay your fine, the fine then increases to €240, which you must pay within 28 days. If after this time (56 days) you still have not paid your fine, the offence is referred to the courts.

If you are convicted in court of speeding offences and non-payment of fines, you will automatically receive 5 penalty points and a fine up to a maximum of €1,000.

Seatbelt offences: If you drive without a seatbelt or allow children under 17 years to travel in your car without a seatbelt, you will incur a fixed charge fine of €120.

You must pay this fine within 28 days or face an increased fine of €180 payable within 56 days of the offence. 3 penalty points will be added to your licence if you pay the fine on time.

If you are convicted in court for non-wearing of a seatbelt, 5 penalty points will be added to your licence and you will be liable to a €2,000 fine for a first offence. Read more about seatbelts and the law in Ireland.
Motor insurance offences: If you drive without insurance, you will get 5 penalty points and will have to appear in court.

The court can issue a fine of up to €5,000 and can send you to prison for up to 6 months. The court can disqualify you from driving instead of issuing penalty points.

Careless driving: If you drive ‘a vehicle in a public place without due care and attention’ you can get up to 5 penalty points on your licence and a fine of up to €5,000.

If careless driving causes death or serious bodily harm, you are liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment for a term of up to 2 years or to a fine of up to €10,000 or to both.

What happens if someone else was driving my vehicle?

If the driving offence was detected by camera, the notice is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. If the registered owner was not driving at the time of the offence they should fill out the form attached to the notice, giving details of the person who was actually driving.

This should then be returned to the Fixed Charge Processing Office with the original notice. Do not enclose payment. The Gardaí then issue a notice to the driver.

Do penalty points apply to all Irish driving licences?

Yes. Penalty points apply to both learner permits and full Irish driving licences. Penalty points also apply to drivers with foreign driving licences driving in Ireland.

If someone is driving in Ireland on a foreign licence, a record will be created for penalty points. If the driver accumulates 12 penalty points in a 3-year period, they are disqualified from driving in Ireland.

How do you find out how many penalty points you have on your driving licence?

To find out how many penalty points are on your driving licence record, contact the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) at 0818 700 800 or email info@ndls.ie and quote your driving licence number.

What happens if you have penalty points from other jurisdictions?

Penalty points from other countries (including EU/EEA member states and the United Kingdom) are not recognised between states.

Although a European Convention on driving disqualifications was signed by the member states in June 1998, it is not currently in force.

However, the UK and Ireland have a separate agreement that allows each country to recognise disqualifications (but not penalty points) due to certain offences.

Can penalty points be cancelled?

If you have been issued with penalty points (or a fixed charge without penalty points), you can apply to the Gardaí for the points to be cancelled. You will have to show that there are good procedural or exceptional grounds for cancellation.

Procedural grounds – examples of this include:

• A technical problem meant that wrong information was recorded (for example, the wrong speed limit was detected)
• You are exempt from the offence, for example, you have an exemption from wearing a seatbelt. See our document on seatbelts)
• You have been penalised for not having tax or insurance, but you can show that you had motor tax or insurance at the time of the alleged offence
• The car had been stolen and you have been sent a fixed charge notice and/or penalty points for offences committed after the theft of the vehicle
• You no longer owned the vehicle

Exceptional grounds – examples of this include

• You broke the speed limit because you were bringing someone to the hospital
• You broke the speed limit because you were responding to an emergency in your home (for example, a fire or gas leak)
• You can get the Fixed Charge Notice Cancellation Request Form and guidance notes on filling out the form on garda.ie.

• Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said: “For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

Finnegan On Films: Comedy, Drama And Thrilling Action On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, says some great character actors feature in the movies today…

One of the first actors and roles I really took notice of was Burgess Meredith who played The Penguin in the 1960’s “Batman” television show.

Little did I know that this was the start of watching out for the character actors, not necessarily the stars.  Also, I later found out just what an acclaimed and award winning actor he was.

So imagine my delight when there are two Meredith films on this weekend. Grumpy Old Men (Saturday 3.50pm RTE1) – a category I find myself approaching ever closer – tells of two retirees, widowers and neighbours, John and Max, played with delicious glee by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.

Continued below…

.

Their mutual teasing and one-upmanship takes a turn for the intense when they both fall for attractive widower Ariel (Ann-Margaret).

Also starring Daryl Hannah, Kevin Pollack and the aforementioned Meredith, the true joy is seeing the comic duo geniuses Lemmon and Matthau bouncing off each other again.

DC League of Super Pets (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is a different slant on the Super Hero genre as Superman’s pet Krypto and shelter dog Ace have to work with other animals to save captured heroes from the evil clutches of Lex Luthor.

Starring the vocal talents of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski and Keanu Reeves, the sequel to this is due to be released imminently.

Continued below…

.

Although the sequels became a bit silly, Rocky (Saturday 9pm RTE2) was a low budget drama that became the highest grossing movie of 1976 as well as launching a significant number of sequels.

Sylvester Stallone wrote himself the role of a lifetime as an unknown boxer who is given a shot at the heavyweight title when the current champion, Apollo Creed, decides to celebrate the American bicentennial.

Even though he was on his uppers, Stallone refused to sell his screenplay script to the studios unless he was given the role of Rocky.  The script went on to be nominated for the Best Original Screenplay at the year’s Academy Awards.

This is a really tight story, well directed by John G Avildsen, which won him the Best Director Oscar, and also starred Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers and the afore mentioned Burgess Meredith as Rocky’s coach, Mickey.

While on the script theme, Tony Scott’s crime thriller True Romance (Saturday 9.15pm TG4) was an early Tarantino screenplay, that he sold to finance “Reservoir Dogs”.

It stars Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette as newlyweds who make a potentially fatal mistake as they steal a stash of drugs from the Mob to fund their new lifestyle.

Also starring Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt and Christopher Walken, the film includes the Tarantino lodestones – a Southern Californian setting, pop cultural references and slow motion violence, although to be honest it does show its age a bit at times.  Enjoy!

Kerry FC Travels To Longford Town For Saturday Night Game

.

Ivan Hurley previews Kerry FC’s clash against Longford Town on Saturday night…

And then there were nine. Yep, you read that right, the league officially ticks past the three-quarter mark tomorrow and we face into the final nine games of the season with the trip to Longford Town (kick-off 7.30pm).

From here on in, these will be the final meetings between the sides, with only four home games remaining for Kerry FC this season.

After an absorbing Cup game against Bohemians last Sunday, attention now turns back to the League for the so-called run-in.

Continued below…

.

Despite Kerry exiting the cup on penalties, there has been a serious buzz around the club for the week having brought 7-time winners Bohemians all the way to penalties.

But that buzz now needs to be transferred onto the pitch and it starts tomorrow against bottom-placed Longford Town.

One could argue that Kerry could be further up the table at this stage of the competition. With 27 points available in the remaining games, mathematically speaking the Kingdom has an outside chance of reaching the elusive playoff places.

However, a more realistic story is the progress shown by the club in their second year in the competition. A win would take the Mounthawk club seven points clear of the bottom which in itself is a huge achievement for the new boys.

Longford come into the game on a run of 5 straight defeats in the league, most recently losing 1-4 at home to Treaty United.

But Kerry are without an away league win in 2024 and Longford having last weekend off to build up to this one, the home side will see this as a huge opportunity to take all three points and close the gap to 9th by a single point.

Longford Town are the only team Kerry have managed a home double over in the club’s history. A convincing 3-0 win over ‘De Town’ in April was followed up with a 2-1 home win back in June in Mounthawk Park. But Longford took the spoils in Bishopsgate back in June.

Following a thrilling Cup game against Bohemians that lasted 120 minutes last Sunday, Conor McCarthy reported a few soar bodies after the match.

In positive news goalkeeper Antonio Tuta is closer to a return from his ankle injury and could feature in this one. Valerii Dolia returned from injury to make the Matchday squad last weekend, expect the Ukrainian to feature here.

“We’ve plenty of soar bodies this week after the Bohemians game but we gave the players a couple of rest days to get themselves back right,” said Conor McCarthy.

“We’ve seen them in training since coming back and they are as hungry as ever to keep going. We are putting everything into Saturday’s game now, the boys know what we need to do and we have a target set for the last 9 games to finish the season as strong as possible. It’s great to have Valerii back in the group, it’s earlier than we all thought which is great. We need everyone available to us now to close out the season in the best possible way.”

Milltown will receive €49,950 whilst Valentia will receive €50,000. The funding is part of a nationwide allocation targeted at assisting local authorities to create a pipeline of significant, well-developed projects in local towns across Ireland.

Welcoming the news, Minister for Education and Kerry T.D, Norma Foley, said: “I am delighted that Valentia and Milltown will receive almost €100,000 in Town Centre First funding.”

“In Valentia, the funding will go towards assessing the rejuvenation of the disused Coast Guard houses. THERE was an entertaining and a insightful gathering at a Tralee pub on Thursday to learn more about the history of one of our most famous streets.

‘Castle Street Through the Ages: An Evening at Jess McCarthy’s’ saw the proprietor of the aforementioned pub, Justin McCarthy and local historian Mike O’Donnell speak about Castle Street and its rich history.

The event, which was part of National Heritage Week, was sold out and a great opportunity to learn more about the local area and the businesses on the street through the years.

Billy Ryle: Congrats To Students On Outstanding Results But Keep And Eye On Timeline

.

Billy Ryle says Minister Norma Foley is as good as her word as Kerry’s Leaving Cert cohort deliver outstanding results…

The 2024 Leaving Cert cohort achieved a great success today when the exam results were issued at 10am by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) directly to candidates through the Candidate Self Service Portal (CSSP). Results are also available in schools from 10am.

Leaving Cert results in Kerry are superb again this year so congratulations to all concerned.

When it comes to achievement in the Leaving Cert and securing places in Further, Tertiary and Higher Education, Kerry students win the gold medal.

Continued below…

.

While success should be celebrated, it’s important to consider your options during the next few days and to keep a close eye on the fast-moving timeline.

CAO offers will flood into Kerry when Round One is released at 2pm on Wednesday, 28th August and important decisions will have to be made about your next step.

Leaving Cert results were issued early again this year as the timeline gets back to normal after the disruptive Covid years.

60,839 candidates took the Leaving Cert this year – 56,791 sat for the established Leaving Cert and 4,048 opted for the Leaving Cert Applied (LCA). 1,840 candidates from Kerry took the 2024 Leaving Cert exam – 1,713 sat for the established Leaving Cert and 127 opted for the LCA.

Once again, there was no return to 2019 pre-pandemic grade levels in the 2024 Leaving Certificate results. Minister Norma Foley gave a commitment that the 2024 Leaving Cert exam results would, on aggregate, be no lower than the 2023 results and she was as good as her word.

Continued below…

.

The post-marking adjustment applied by the SEC following the marking process made sure that would be the case. Of the 405,171 Leaving Cert individual results, 68% were increased in the marking adjustment, compared to 71% in 2023.

The remainder were unchanged. No marks were adjusted downwards. So, the overall results in 2024 have been adjusted up by an average of 7.5%, compared to 7.9%. last year.

The range of marking adjustment was from 12.1%, added to those at the bottom of the scale, to 4.8%, added to those at the top of the scale. Good news, indeed for Kerry candidates, whose overall results are every bit as strong as last year.

Candidates can see their marks, including marks for each component and the post marking adjustment, on the CSSP from 12.00 on Tuesday, 27th August.

Candidates can apply on the CSSP to view their scripts online between 17.00 on Tuesday, 27th August and 20.00 on Wednesday, 28th August.

LCA application to view scripts is done online during the same timeline. It’s well worth viewing your marked scripts before deciding to appeal any subject(s) results. The facility to view marked scripts is provided free of charge.

Both scripts marked manually and scripts marked online will be available to candidates for viewing. In the case of the former, each candidate will be assigned one of two three-hour sessions on Saturday, 31st August.

Session One is from 09.30 to 12.30, Session Two is from 14.00 to 17.00. Online access to view scripts that were marked online will also be available on the CSSP from 09.00 on Saturday, 31st August to 09.00 on Sunday, 1st September.

Any candidate who wishes to submit an appeal application against an awarded grade – commonly called ‘applying for a recheck’ – can do so on the CSSP between 10.00 on Sunday, 1st September and 17.00 on Monday, 2nd September.

The results of appeals will be available to view on a candidates CSSP from 11.00 on Friday, 27th September.

Appeal results will also be available on Schools Portals from 11.00 on Friday, 27th September. The appeal fee is €40 per Leaving Cert subject and €15.50 per LCA subject. The fee is refunded if the appeal is successful.

The timelines for candidates to apply to view scripts and to lodge their appeal applications are very short.

The SEC maintains that these timelines are essential to ensure that the remaining stages of the appeal process can be completed as quickly as possible.

The SEC will not accept late applications for viewing scripts or for submitting an appeal against an awarded grade.

Latest CAO data confirms a final application figure of 83,537 applicants, down 689 from 84,226 in 2023. CAO has received 2,362 applications from County Kerry. That’s a slight decrease on the 2023 figure of 2,394.

The blue riband courses are again in high demand and will require high points to secure a course offer.

However, with over 50,000 places on offer this year, applicants can be very hopeful of a college offer.

All will be revealed when CAO Round One of offers is released next Wednesday.  I sincerely hope that it will be a joyful day for Kerry’s CAO applicants.

New Video Whets The Appetite For Listowel Harvest Racing Festival

.
Crew and team behind the scenes image after a day filming on Bromore Cliffs, outside Ballybunion,

THIS week, Listowel Race Company launched a video campaign which showcases some of the magic and beauty of the North Kerry landscape in the run up to the Listowel Harvest Racing Festival next month.

It features the historic and storied past of the vibrant town of Listowel and, most importantly, the wonderful, warm welcome and festivities that await all ages as preparations proceed in earnest for the forthcoming Festival from Sunday 22nd to Saturday 28th of September.

The campaign features well known local faces including horse trainer, Eoin McCarthy, publican and writer, Billy Keane, Chairman of Listowel Race Company, David Fitzmaurice, Secretary/Manager Brenda Daly, Head Groundsman Dan O’Connell, Enclosures Manager, John Sheehan, jockey Aoife O’Brien and this year’s judges of the McElligotts Kia Ladies Day Rosanna Davison and Heidi Higgins.

Continued below…

.

Featuring dramatic footage of the spectacular scenery off Bromore cliffs, horses riding out on Beale Beach and drone footage of Listowel Town, the core message of the campaign is when you come to the Listowel Races it truly is a complete experience as there is so much to do and see in North Kerry by day and by night. (see video below)

The concept for the campaign was developed by Orla Diffily and produced in association with George Doyle and Paudi Cronin of Neustock Media.

It was filmed over approximately 2 weeks from the end of July to early August with the crew utilising every sunny day to full advantage. It has a “movie” cinematic texture so as to make it visually appealing and already has over 100,000 views on social media platforms.

Primary Schools Encouraged To Register For Blue Star Programme

.

WITH just days to go until the new school year begins, Primary School Teachers in Kerry are being called on to register for the Blue Star Programme.

In its 14th year, the award-winning Programme teaches children about the European Union. To date, over 1,200 schools and an estimated 200,000 pupils have completed the Programme, with 17 schools in Kerry participating in the Programme last year.

Schools participating in the Blue Star Programme may receive a visit to the school from a politician or a diplomat. Minister for Education Norma Foley TD visited Abbeydorney National School in Tralee and MEP Seán Kelly visited Kiltallagh National School in Castlemaine.

Continued below…

.

From this week until October 11, 2024, the National Implementation Body, European Movement Ireland invites primary schools across Ireland to register and complete the Blue Star Programme, in particular Gaelscoileanna, island schools and DEIS schools.

Participating classes learn about European history, geography, culture, and the EU institutions in a fun, informative and accessible way that complements the national primary curriculum.

Aspects of the Programme include cross-cultural activities, such as learning basic phrases in other European languages and celebrating European cultural days. Additionally, the Programme encourages pupils to learn about the European elections, in particular the role of MEPs and the differences between the EU Institutions.

Teachers have the flexibility to integrate the Programme into their lesson plans and tailor EU projects to their classes’ aptitude and ability. The Programme is open to all primary school ages, from junior infants to sixth class, and is designed to be run in all school settings across Ireland. Gaelscoileanna can avail of Clár na Réalta Goirme i nGaeilge.

European Movement Ireland (EM Ireland) is the National Implementation Body for the Blue Star Programme.

EM Ireland is an independent not-for-profit, membership organisation dedicated to developing the connection between Ireland and the EU and the Programme is funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

After being crowned, Claire was last seen departing from Tralee on the back of her then-boyfriend’s motorbike, vanishing from the public eye. For decades, she remained a mystery, never again contacting the festival’s management or participating in its events. It wasn’t until 2020 that any trace of Claire emerged, as her absence had become an enduring enigma in the history of the Rose of Tralee. Her sudden disappearance and long silence sparked curiosity and intrigue for years. This year’s festival is the first time Claire, now Claire Schmid Furrer, has returned to Tralee since she won. Austin Stacks GAA Juvenile Club News

.

PEIL FAOI 7/8/9: Our Under 7/8/9 footballers had their best session ever last Sunday morning in Caherslee. All players required again at 11am on Sunday next (25th August) as usual. Bígí linn! All welcome!

PEIL FAOI 11: (i) More Football-for-Fun will take place at 10.50am on Sunday next (25ú Lúnasa) in Connolly Park nuair a chuirfimid fáilte Uí Cheallaigh roimh leaideanna óga an Daingin (Dingle). (ii) Another exciting and challenging encounter will take place in the U11 Boys Central League this Thursday (22nd) v K-O’R at 7pm in Connolly Park. (Last week our lads played brilliantly at Na Gaeil’s lovely grounds in Killeen).

The Rose Cup squad and management

FAOI 13: ‘Well done’ to our U13 boys who won the ROSE CUP on Saturday last. The games were sponsored by the Bon Secours Hospital.

FAOI 14: We look forward to the Lee Strand Football (one-day) U14 Tournament (boys born in 2010 or 2011). The games will take place on the 14th September (Saturday) when we’ll field the best possible Austin Stack Club U14 team. Keep an eye out for group messages for details of training or trial games. (Ger Hobbert)

PEIL FAOI 15: (i) Training continued during the week with sessions on Wednesday evening and on Sunday morning. Wednesday sessions are part of the Tralee Development Programme in which all the town teams are involved and playing together. We encourage all players not involved with the Tralee District team to attend these sessions. The sessions are open to all. (ii) The Central League final is fast approaching and, so, let’s keep up the fitness work, boys….ní bhíonn damhsa gan dua….no dancing without hard work! Ár bhfreasúra: Na Gaeil. Up The Rock!

(iii) U15 Team members were well represented in our minor team’s victory in Kenmare last Monday evening. Eoin Mangan and Darragh Lyons made the starting 15 and Harry Murphy and Jamie Casey got game time in the 2nd half. Maith sibh, a bhuachaillí!

(iv) We are delighted to mention that, last week, 9 boys from the Austin Stack Club were chosen to be among the starting 15 on the Tralee District team. They challenged Castleisland District at a wet and windy John Mitchel Club complex.

A very bright start by the Tralee lads had them leading by 11 points at the break. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a game of two halves. The Castleisland District boys dealt much better with the conditions than our lads. They played some very good football and fought their way back into the game and eventually took the win with a free kick in the last play of the game. Ó, a Thiarcais!

Yes, that was very disappointing for our lads but there is a lesson to be learnt from this result….the game is never over until it’s over….until the last tweet on the referee’s whistle! Ní breac go port…not a trout ‘til on the bank! On the positive side…all Tralee’s scores came from Rock players and that’s a good news story! (v) Our unfortunate Division 6 lads who were pipped in the semi-final: Oran O’Regan; Conor Murphy, Ediart Topali, Eliot Calleja; Joe O’Halloran, Mark Foley, Oisín Cotter; Ryan Moriarty, Séamus Keenan; Diarmuid Hennessy, Kyle Yoxhall, Nathan O’Connor; David Ahern, Killian Coffey, Tadhg Somers; Liam Swords, Ewan Canty, Jayden O’Dowd, Fionn Cotter, Joe de Barra, Ryan O’Flaherty, Noah Reidy. Beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach! (vi) Our three boys on the North Kerry Development squad: Anraí Ó Murchú, Conchúr Ó Riagáin agus Eoin Ó Mongáin. We look forward to hearing good reports on their All-Ireland final bid! Good luck, boys! Ciarraí Thuaidh Abú! (Ger Hobbert)

MINORS: Minor schedule: (i) Monday the 12th: Keanes Supervalu Minor County Championship Group 1 Match 2…Kenmare Shamrocks v the Austin Stack Club. Venue: Kenmare. Well played, Men of The Rock! ÁR bPEILEADÓIRÍ BAN: It was nice that our Rock PP, Fr Pádraig, introduced our club’s All-Ireland champions, Aoife Ní Dhuilleáin and Dara Ó Lúing with the Brendan Martin Cup, to the congregation at last Sunday’s Mass in his church, Séipéal Mhuire is Naomh Breandán! ‘Twas a morning of Roses, Rock and Mass!

ÁR bPEILEADÓIRÍ SINSEARACHA: ‘Well done’ to our senior club team (Intermediate Club Championship) that defeated Legion in Connolly Park on Sunday last. Go n-éirí go geal lenár bhfoireann sa leathchraobh v Gleann Beithe/Gleann Chárthaigh.

THE festival is coming to a close tonight but there was still entertainment around town on Tuesday for people to enjoy.

The highlight arguably was the second dog show of the week in the Town Park. There were dogs of all shapes and sizes and with numerous categories most of the pooches came away with a rosette of some description.

There was even a fancy dress category with dogs sporting Kerry jerseys, headpieces, tutus and more. Great fun for all the family. Scroll down for photos…

Kerry County Council Team Monitoring High Tide Advisory

.

MET Eireann has issued a High Tide Advisory for all coasts, covering the period from 12 noon on Wednesday to 12 noon on Friday this week.

Kerry County Council has activated its Severe Weather Assessment Team protocol and is monitoring the situation.

A period of ‘supermoon’ spring tides, expected to be among the highest during 2024, are the primary cause of elevated and high coastal tides.

Continued below…

.

In addition Ireland is forecast to be affected by strong winds and increased storm surge from the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto in the Caribbean.

The combination of strong onshore winds, high spring tides and high waves may result in coastal flooding and wave overtopping.

Property owners and residents at known coastal flooding risk locations are advised to take the usual necessary precautions during this High Tide Advisory.

Fé 13 Rose Cup: Na Gaeil hosted the Rose Cup last Saturday. The conditions were favourable which made for a fantastic day for all teams. We had teams from Kerry, Dublin and Cork in Na Gaeil on the day.

Our u13s were in a group with Dr. Crokes, Ballymac and Cuala from Dublin. After some very tight and intense games we were successful in all the group games, topping our group and setting up a semi-final versus a very impressive Listowel Emmets side.

It was a real tit for tat battle with Listowel’s deadly goal getters causing us untold trouble. Thankfully our own lads showed great nerve to hold on and win the game by 2 points. Austin Stacks came out as winners from the Ballyrickard section, setting up yet another titanic battle against our own lads.

After an intensely competitive game, we were unfortunate to lose by the minimum. In the shield final Milltown/Castlemaine defeated John Mitchels. Overall a very enjoyable day for everyone involved. Many thanks to all the parents and club members who brought food and helped out on the day.

U13

U13 County League Phase 2

St Pats 2-8
Na Fianna 0-9

On a fine Sunday evening in Blennerville our u13s hosted Na Fianna in the semi-final of the Central Region competition. There were fantastic numbers out in support for both teams. Our boys worked hard from the outset but were maybe a bit nervous and lot of passes were off target. Na Fianna also seemed to be winning the 50/50 situations by getting out in front.

We were probably fortunate that Na Fianna did not make more of the opportunities they had but our defenders also must be given credit for keeping us in the game. We went into half time trailing by one point but knowing we could play better.

The teams were evenly matched, but we felt the opportunity was there to win the game. We asked the boys to show a bit more fight if they wanted to get to the final. We played much better in the second half, creating more scoring opportunities and taking our goal chances.

Na Fianna responded well and pushed hard for a goal to get back in the game, but our defence held up bravely under pressure. In the end we won out by five points, but it was a closer contest than the scoreline.
