THE Kerry Homecoming Festival at Halloween is a county-wide initiative to bring home our Kerry Diaspora during the month of October this year.

It is presented by Kerry County Council as part of the Global Irish Festival Series, which is a joint initiative between Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Kerry Homecoming Festival is a call home from all aspects of Kerry business, tourism, sports and cultural organisations to come and enjoy close to 50 events and activities such as Samhain spectacles, storytelling, Jack-o-Lantern carving, genealogy workshops and heritage talks, star-gazing, a celebration of the centenary of the closing of the Lartigue Monorail, an American Wake at Kerry Writers Museum and much, much more.

.

The legendary Cailleach (Hag / Witch), will be the centerpiece of a thrilling Samhain spectacle in Listowel, Dingle, Kenmare and Tralee.

The Cailleach is the goddess of the winter months. Her season begins on Samhain (the origin of Halloween), October 31st, when the Goddess Brigid hands her staff over.

In Kerry she has given her name to the Hag’s Glen in the MacGilliycuddy’s Reeks mountains where the Hag of Corrán Tuathail (Carrauntoohill) plunged to her death in the lake known as Hag’s Lake.

The Samhain Spectacles will be supported by a series of family friendly workshops in 16 towns and villages, in the run up, led by Juli Ní Mhaoileoin, the Dingle Druid, in which people of all ages will learn how to make traditional Samhain masks and Jack-o-Lanterns and they in turn can take part in the spectacles wearing their masks or bearing their lanterns.

Genealogy and family research feature heavily in the programme with talks and workshops being presented by experts Kay Caball in the Killarney and Tralee libraries and Tom Dillon in Castleisland and Killorglin.

Kerry’s tradition of storytelling, particularly of the otherworldly kind at Halloween is also honoured through a number of storytelling sessions from Seán Ó’Laoghaire, Niall de Búrca and Tom Dillon throughout the county.

The programme also features the Global Gaelic Games Social Festival, in Killarney on October 18th and 19th.

Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

This celebration will bring together Gaelic Football enthusiasts from all corners of the globe to take part in non-competitive 9-a-side Gaelic games that emphasise inclusiveness and integration.

All of the existing seasonal Kerry festivals and some new ones, including and Féile Eile in Killorglin will also be joining in the fun – Kenmare Halloween Howl, the Patrick O’Keeffe Music Festival in Castleisland, the Skellig Coast Archaeology Festival the Kerry International Film Festival celebrating its 25th anniversary and Oireachtas na Samhna, both taking place in Killarney, as well as Tralee’s annual National Circus Festival and The Tralee Half Marathon.

The Homecoming Festival provides a unique opportunity to deepen our linkages with the Kerry Diaspora, Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Breandán MacGearailt stated.

“Despite being a small country on the edge of Europe, on the edge of the Atlantic, we have, over many generations developed a global network of Irish-diaspora, who are embedded into business, culture and society across the world. This is our way of welcoming our first, second, third and fourth generation of Irish back home, and showing them our culture and history.”

Full Programme Of Events In Ballyduff This Weekend For Anthony O’Carroll Fundraiser

.

THE village of Ballyduff in North Kerry is gearing up for a special weekend as it hosts a fundraiser for local motorcycle racer, Anthony O’Carroll.

From September 13 to 15, the community will come together for a celebration of racing and camaraderie, while raising crucial funds to support Anthony — who was seriously injured in a motorbike accident on the Isle of Man in July — on his road to recovery.

The event boasts appearances from some of Ireland’s most accomplished motorcycle racers. Road racing legend Miko Sweeney will be in attendance alongside former Mondello Masters Superbike Champion Derek Shiels.

.

Adding to the star power are current Masters Superbike leader Kevin Keyes and the recently crowned Masters Super Twin champion, Oisin Maher.

Motorcycle racing commentator Jim Halligan will be hosting a Questions and Answers forum with these racing stars on Saturday from 6 pm at the event’s marquee.

Local racers Andrew Murphy and Stephen Walsh will share their thrilling Manx Grand Prix experiences, while Tralee’s Emmet O’Grady, Keyes’ rival in the Superbike and Supersport classes, will also be joining the festivities.

Fuelling the spirit of the weekend will be a stunning display of over 30 racing bikes at the Community Hall.

Among the highlights will be a prized possession – a bike once owned by the late road racing legend, Richard Britton.

The showcase extends beyond road and circuit racing, with Abbeyfeale’s Gavin Moloney exhibiting his Munster championship-winning Moto-X bikes.

.

The fundraiser goes beyond the world of racing, welcoming the entire community. A monster raffle overflowing with exciting prizes like rally car test drives, Mondello Park track days, hotel getaways, and gym memberships are up for grabs.

Kerry Motor Club, Ballyduff Vintage Club, No Hopers Motorcycle Club, and Kerry Motorcycle Racers have joined forces to make this fundraiser a success.

The weekend will be full of activities to engage all ages and interests. A motorcycle exhibition, classic car and rally car displays, live music, and a host of entertainment options are just a taste of what’s on offer.

Alongside fun activities, a classic car run, a motorcycle ride-out, a Honda 50 run, barbecues, a seven-a-side soccer tournament, and a 5km walk will provide opportunities for friendly competition and community spirit.

Every contribution, big or small, can make a real difference in Anthony’s recovery. Donations can be made through the GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-anthony-his-parents-on-his-road-to-recovery

THE MTU Kerry Campus Culture Night event was launched this week and will take place for the second year at the Island of Geese on Friday, September 20.

Following the success of last year’s event, the MTU Culture Night event in Tralee town aims to connect the University with the people of Tralee and demonstrate the strong arts and creative talents of MTU students and alumni.

Titled ‘Kaleidoscope’, the performance will commence at 8pm at the Island of Geese for approximately an hour.

Continued below…

.

The evening will include film, traditional music, spoken word, animation, poetry and solo classical and contemporary musical performances.

The MTU event will be preceded by a performance by The TIRC International choir at 7.30pm lead by Liliia Nemchenko. This performance will also feature Isac Ianko, a traditional Roma musician.

Culture Night / Oíche Chultúir is a national moment, celebrating all that makes up the richness and diversity of Culture in Ireland today, connecting people to cultural activities locally and nationally and aims to open pathways to ongoing engagement.

An annual, all-island public event which takes place each year on the second last Friday of September, Culture Night / Oíche Chultúir celebrates culture, creativity and the arts and seeks to actively promote the belief that this rich and varied culture is alive, treasured and nurtured in people’s lives, today and every day.

Speaking at the launch Anne Looney, External Services Manager said, “MTU is delighted to host this Culture Night performance in Tralee town centre again this year. The words ‘Rootedness’ and ‘Connectedness’ feature strongly in the vision for the Technological University sector. For MTU our connectedness to the region is a key priority for the University. Events such as Culture Night provide an opportunity for MTU to engage with the local community and place our arts and cultural provision on a centre stage”.

Creative Director of MTU Kerry Campus Culture Night Dr Susan Motherway added, “we would like to thank Kerry County Council and the Arts Office for their assistance in organising this event. We are delighted to have the opportunity to utilise the Island of Geese space again and showcase our Creative Media department at the Kerry Campus”.

Connollys Jewellers To Close After 70 Years In Business

.
Norma and Martin Hartnett of Connollys Jewellers have announced their decision to take early retirement.Photo By : Domnick Walsh © Eye Focus LTD

CONNOLLY Jewellers on Bridge Street, Tralee will close its doors this Autumn as the owners, Norma and Martin Hartnett, have announced their decision to take early retirement.

The business was established in the 1950s by Norma’s parents, Gerry and Birdie.

Martin Hartnett, who has been at the helm with his wife Norma Connolly for 31 years, said “Connolly Jewellers has been a big part of the retail landscape in Tralee for the past 70 years. During that time Norma’s parents and all who ever worked here always gave 100% to every aspect of the business.”

Continued below…

“The joy when a new piece of jewellery is purchased and an old piece with sentimental value is revived has been the best part of the journey. We will always value the time we had and it has been an honour to add to the experience of our customers.”

“The current retail climate, albeit difficult at present, has had no bearing on our decision to retire. There were ups and downs over the past 70 years. I think keeping your buying right, keeping an eye on your costs and having a strong service ethic helps you overcome the challenges. Simply, standing in the same place six days a week for over 30 years has taken its toll on the body and it’s time for a rest.”

The impending closure of the shop is unlikely to have an impact on the careers of the current staff who are due to return to college in September.

Customers who have made bookings or have items on deposit will be contacted individually.

There will be an eight-week window during which outstanding repaired items can be collected and all watch guarantees will be backed-up by the brand itself and the distributors in Ireland.

There is a wide selection of stock that will be available to purchase with 30% to 50% discounts for the final eight weeks of trading.

REPORT: Injury-Time Equaliser Denies Kerry FC Three Points

.

David Moriarty reports on Kerry FC’s game away to Treaty United on Friday evening…

TREATY UNITED 1-1 KERRY FC

Kerry FC made their second and last trip to Limerick for the 2024 season as they took on Treaty United in the Markets Field on Friday evening.

Both sides came into the game with defeats as Kerry FC lost 1-0 to UCD AFC last Friday in Tralee, whereas Treaty United lost away to Bray Wanderers in the Carlisle Grounds in what was nothing short of a 5-0 thumping.

Treaty United sit ten points clear of Kerry FC in eighth and have not won a game in the league since the tenth of August away to Longford Town.

Continued below…

.

Kerry FC have not been on the winning side in the league since beating Longford Town on the 13th of June making Kerry the more eager of the two to pick up three points in Limerick.

Kerry met a couple of familiar faces in the Markets Field when former players Steven Healy and Trpimir Vrljicak were both in the starting eleven to face the Kingdom. A few friendly words were exchanged beforehand between the players but things remained very professional throughout the evening’s proceedings.

Kerry started on the front foot with Valerii Dolia having a shot on goal inside the opening two minutes.

He took the ball at his feet by some distance and let fly just outside the area. The effort was on target, but Corey Chambers saved it well.\

Treaty replied five minutes later with a chance of their own when a floated free kick was put into the danger area and got as far as Ben O’Riordan who could not get enough on it and it was eventually brought in comfortably by Antonio Tuta.

Continued below…

.

Kerry FC dominated the possession from there on in for the remainder of the first half. Valerii Dolia was amongst the action again winning a free kick outside the area.

He decided to take on the responsibility himself and although he struck the ball with great power, it went straight into the arms of Chambers.

Three minutes later Sean McGrath had the ball in the back of the net but was rightfully ruled out for offside.

Ronan Teahan was the next Kerry FC man to have a shot on goal as he made a great run down the left wing beating two before shooting on goal but once again Chambers was there to keep away any danger.

Lee Devitt had Treaty United’s first real effort on goal since the opening chance in the seventh minute but it went high and wide over Antonio Tuta’s crossbar.

Trpimir Vrljicak had a great effort in the last minute of the half go slightly over the crossbar and let the Kerry FC boys breathe a huge sigh of relief that their former teammate didn’t put Treaty United ahead on the stroke of half time.

Four minutes after the restart it was Daniel Okwute this time trying his luck at getting past Corey Chambers. He was at a tight angle on the right-hand side and took the shot on with great precision and drove along the ground but Chambers got down well again to pull off another great save.

In the fifty-eighth minute, Kerry FC finally got what their performance deserved and that was the opening goal of the game through Sean McGrath. Sean took the ball from the halfway line and drove with it down the left-hand side.

He beat one, then two before sticking the ball into the roof of the net giving the away side the lead with just over half an hour left on the clock.

Just three minutes after taking the lead, Kerry FC nearly doubled their advantage when Valerii Dolia struck the crossbar from eight yards out at a tough angle. Kerry FC started playing with great confidence once going a goal up and it was just what they needed to get going.

Between the seventy-eighth and eighty-first minute, Antonio Tuta made two great saves to deny Sean Costelloe on both occasions from distance and close range and the Croatian keeper was doing his best to keep Kerry FC in the lead in the late stages of the game.

Five minutes were added on but even more was played when there was an unfortunate head collision between two Treaty players in the box.

Treaty had a free kick in the one-hundredth minute of the game and unfortunately for Kerry FC, they equalised through Evan O’Connor.

A scrappy goal which saw the ball just creep over the line in a heartbreaking way for the Kingdom.

The game ended a matter of seconds later with both teams sharing the points. Kerry FC now have to pick themselves up again as they host newly crowned champions Cork City in Mounthawk Park next Friday.

.

IT’S been just over a month since the Kerry Ladies won the All-Ireland final, but the excitement was still fresh in the minds of Tralee schoolchildren today.

Members of the team, Aisling O’Connell, Aoife Dillane and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, along with managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill paid a visit to a number of schools and received a raucous welcome wherever they went.

They began at Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn where Declan Quill teaches and the hall was packed with green and gold-clad children greeting the visitors.

Continued below…

.

A visit to Listellick NS saw similar exhilaration in the sports hall with one pupil particularly excited. Sixth class pupil Lauren Hayes won a competition to design Kerry LGFA’s 50th anniversary jersey she said it was an amazing feeling seeing people from all over wearing the jersey.

The lads and ladies received a guard of honour arriving at CBS Primary School and faced a serious of question from pupils ranging from who their heroes were growing up to the benefits of playing sports.

The Holy Family pupils’ screaming reached Beatlemania levels in the school hall and teacher Ms Breathnach from Galway managed to get her hands on the Brendan Martin Cup even if her fellow countywomen couldn’t.

The town’s biggest primary school, Scoil Eoin, equalled all the others with their enthusiasm while Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí welcomed back past pupils Darragh Long, Aisling O’Connell and Aoife Dillane who joined current pupil Amy Ní Curtáin in being feted.

In all the schools, the players and management stressed the importance of perseverance, hard work and the benefits of sport…while also announcing the primary kids had homework off on Monday and Tuesday. TGI Friday indeed! Scroll down for photos…

Know Your Rights: Looking For A Flat Or House To Rent

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

It can be difficult to find private rented accommodation. So, to make sure you find somewhere that suits you, you should consider these questions before viewing places to rent:

• How much can you afford in rent and bills?
• What is the standard of the accommodation?
• What is the Building Energy Rating (BER) of the property?
• What is the location of the property? Is it near to your work or college?
• How long do you plan to stay there?
• Do you want to share a bedroom, bathroom or kitchen?

Most rooms, flats, apartments and houses to rent are advertised on accommodation websites. You can search for a particular type of accommodation and set up alerts for your specific requirements.

You may also find rented accommodation to let in the accommodation sections of newspapers, in advertisements in shops, by word of mouth or though social media pages dedicated to fining and renting accommodation.

Continued below…

.

If you are a student you should also check on college notice boards and at your student union, many of whom keep accommodation lists

There are also accommodation or letting agencies. These are commercial organisations that help you find private rented accommodation. They may charge you a fee. Before registering with an agency, you should find out:

• Is the agency licensed?
• What services does it offer?
• If you pay a fee, in what circumstances will you get a refund?
• If you decide to register with the agency, make sure you get a receipt for any money you pay.

What to consider when viewing rented accommodation

Minimum standards apply to rented accommodation. You may find the following checklist helpful when viewing somewhere to rent.

• Are there any signs of dampness?
• Do the windows open?
• What security is available (such as window locks, burglar alarm)?
• Does it have a working smoke detector?
• Is there a fire alarm? Check fire evacuation procedures
• Who pays for the heating? What hours is it on, and who controls it?
• Is hot water available all or some of the time?
• Are the cooker and fridge clean and in working order?
• What sort of condition is the bathroom in?
• Do you have to share the bathroom, if so, with how many others?
• Is there storage for bicycles?
• Is there a bus route or other public transport nearby?
• Are there shops and other facilities nearby?
• Does the property have a parking space?

What should I do before I agree to rent somewhere?

Make sure that you can afford the rent being asked, either from your own income or with available State support, such as:

• Housing Assistance Payment (HAP)
• Rent Supplement
• Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS)

If you will be claiming Rent Supplement or HAP, make sure that you know the local maximum rent level allowed. There is some flexibility in certain situations, allowing for higher rents to be covered.

Be aware of your rights and your obligations as a tenant and your landlord’s rights and obligations. For example, your landlord must provide you with a rent book and ensure that the accommodation meets certain minimum physical standards.

They must also register the tenancy with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) every year.

If the landlord wants you to sign a fixed-term lease, don’t agree unless you are sure you want to stay for that length of time. If you leave before the end of a fixed-term lease, you may lose your deposit.

If you are renting a room in your landlord’s home, your tenancy is not covered by landlord and tenant legislation, but it is covered if you are renting a self-contained apartment or flat. Read more in our document on Sharing accommodation with your landlord.

At the start of a tenancy ask the landlord for a written list of all furnishings and appliances. You and the landlord should sign this list to show that you agree on the furnishings supplied and their condition.

This will help to prevent disputes during your stay and when you are leaving. This list should be included in the rent book.

Make sure that you note any signs of damage by previous tenants. You could photograph or otherwise record the existing condition of the property including any damage to walls, furniture or appliances.

If there are outstanding repairs, ask the landlord to state in writing that they will be completed.

.

What are the rules about deposits?

Some landlords or agents may ask you for a holding deposit when you decide to take the accommodation. This is a sum of money you pay to hold the property before you sign the lease and enter into a contract with the landlord.

You should always get a written receipt for a holding deposit. Holding deposits are often not refundable if you don’t take up the accommodation.

You will be asked for a security deposit before moving into the accommodation. The landlord holds this deposit as security to cover any rent arrears, bills owing or damage beyond normal wear and tear at the end of the tenancy.

How much should I pay for a deposit?

You cannot be forced to make upfront payments of more than 2 month’s rent. This includes a deposit of a month’s rent and one month’s rent in advance. Students in student-specific tenancies can opt-out of this restriction and pay a larger upfront payment if they want.

Can I get help to pay a deposit?

If you are getting a social welfare payment and are unable to pay the deposit, the Department of Social Protection’s representative (formerly the Community Welfare Officer) may be able to help with paying a deposit under the Supplementary Welfare Allowance Scheme.

If you are in emergency homeless accommodation, your local authority may help with your deposit to get accommodation under the HAP scheme.

You should contact the housing section of your local authority for further information on this.

Can I lose my deposit?

You should get a receipt for any deposit you pay. Your rent book should state how much of a deposit you paid. You may lose your deposit if:

• You leave without giving proper notice, or leave before the end of a fixed-term lease
• You cause damage to the accommodation beyond normal wear and tear
• You leave with bills or rent unpaid.

What are rental scams?

Rental scams are when someone tries to take money from you when you are trying to find somewhere to rent. For example, the person might claim they can’t show you accommodation they have advertised, then take your deposit and disappear.

When you are looking for a place to rent, you should be aware of rental scams and how to avoid them. Before you make any payment or agreement with your landlord you should always view the property in person and make sure you are happy with the tenancy terms and conditions.

Rental scams generally fall into one of the following 3 categories:

• The scammer asks for a deposit but claims they can’t show you the property as they are out of the country
• The scammer is living at the property, shows it to different people and asks for rent off each one. They then disappear with the money.
• The process seems to go as normal, however, you are given fake keys and the scammer disappears

How do I avoid getting scammed?

There are a number of things you can do to try and avoid being scammed. You should:

• Inspect the property in person. Do not rely on online videos or photos when viewing a property. Take a picture of the landlord or letting agent’s ID where possible.
• Use a secure payment method. Avoid making cash payments or transferring money directly to someone without verifying their identity and visiting the property. Get a receipt for any payments you make and avoid using unsecure payment methods like wire transfers or cryptocurrency.
• Ask for a contract. Request a written contract, such as a tenancy or licence agreement. This will explain the terms and conditions of your tenancy.
• Do your research. Be familiar with current rental prices in the area you want to rent. If something appears too good to be true, investigate further before making a payment.
• Take your time. Don’t rush into making a decision. Scammers will often try to rush you, but it is important to take your time and do your research before making a decision.
• Look for advice. If you are unsure about something and suspect it may be a scam, you can contact Threshold for advice.

What should I do if I’ve been scammed?

If you realise you’ve been scammed, you should contact your bank or credit card company immediately.

If you have transferred money online or have given your bank details to someone, your bank can cancel your cards. If you have been charged already, you may be able to get the transaction reversed.

You should report the incident to your local Garda station. You should also report the scam to Threshold, who can help make other people aware of the scam.

Threshold is a useful source of information and advice on landlord and tenant issues, Tel: 021 427 8848

• Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said: For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.  Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Finnegan On Films: Rocky And Railway Children On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, has some suggestions for your viewing pleasure tonight…

ONE of the great family films of my generation was “The Railway Children” which had a particular resonance with me as its Director, Lionel Jeffries, kindly invited me to its premiere back in 1970.

So a belated sequel The Railway Children Return (Saturday RTE1 6.35pm) is a welcome addition to the original story.

Set this time in 1944, the Watts children, Lily, Pattie and Ted, are evacuated from Manchester to the Yorkshire village of Oakwood, and the home of Annie Waterbury, a Headmistress whose husband is away at the war, and her son Thomas.

Continued below…

.

There is a US Army base in the area, so when the children come across an African – American soldier, Abe, with a wounded leg claiming to be on a secret mission, their adventure begins.

Starring Sheridan Smith, Tom Courteney, John Bradley, Beau Gadsdon, Austin Hayes, Hugh Quarshie and the luminous Jenny Agutter reprising her role as Roberta, this is a touching story and production.

I Used To Live Here (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) started out as a social documentary about the effects of suicide on young people and the wider community.

This in turn was developed into this impressive drama through the use of workshops and non professional actors. Teenager Amy (Jordanne Jones) is grieving from the loss of her mother three years ago.

She lives with her father in Tallaght, but when a boy she is keen on commits suicide, it understandably raises issues for her.

Added to the arrival of a former girlfriend of her father, and a young boy that might be her half brother, Amy has a lot to take on.

In Mile 22 (Saturday 9.55 RTE1)  the latest collaboration between director Peter Berg and actor Mark Wahlberg, the latter plays CIA operative James Silva, who leads a small top secret team of intelligence officers on an urgent and dangerous mission (Is there any other kind in films?).

Continued below…

.

There task is to smuggle a foreign intelligence officer from the American Embassy in Indonesia to an airfield for extraction twenty two miles away.

However, with the city’s military, police and street gangs standing in their way, this is not a straightforward task.

Also starring John Malkovich, Lauren Cohan, Ronda Rousey and Nikolai Nikolaeff, this is a classic film of unnuanced chases, plenty of shoot outs and nasty baddies.

I pity the fool who hasn’t seen Rocky III (Saturday 10.30 RTE2), but it is perhaps my favourite film in the series and is again written and directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Rocky has defended his title a number of times, but a more comfortable lifestyle has reduced his competitive focus, just as a rather dangerous contender, Clubber Lang, is rising through the ranks.

It turns out that Clubber lives up to his name, and challenges Rocky for a title fight.

Mr T stars as Clubber and the rest of the original cast return once again, but don’t blame me if “Eye of the Tiger” is this weekend’s earworm. Enjoy!

THE Inspired Bio-Hub has announced an exciting fundraising initiative featuring local men Joe Moriarty and Ray Moynihan, who will tackle a 500km scenic Algarve cycling challenge from October 5th to October 12th.

All funds raised during this venture will contribute to the construction of a much-needed new polytunnel at the hub, which will greatly enhance their capacity to engage participants in the growth and production of organic food.

“I’m excited to take on this challenge with Ray and support such an essential initiative,” says Joe Moriarty. “It’s thrilling to think that every Km we cycle will help not just build the new polytunnel, but also empower individuals to create their business and engage with sustainable food practices. Together, we can make a positive impact!”

Continued below…

.

Ray Moynihan adds; “Cycling through the stunning Algarve will be both a challenge and a pleasure, but it pales in comparison to seeing the joy that our work at the Bio-Hub brings to individuals attending the workshops. It’s making a real difference in their lives and in the community, and we’re honoured to support them in this way.”

The cycling challenge not only promotes ecological awareness but also serves as a rallying cry for the community to get involved. Local residents, organisations, and businesses are encouraged to contribute, with donations through the Inspired idonate page and by participating in upcoming events at the hub.

Now, Inspired is eager to further enhance their biodiversity initiatives for a greater community impact.

To support Joe and Ray’s cycling challenge and contribute to the installation of the new polytunnel, please donate at https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/InspiredTralee23

Inspired, located in Tralee, has been hard at work for the part number of years, providing training, social integration, and employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities and over the past two years participants have actively engaged in workshops focused on sustainable food practices and eco-crafts at their Bio-Hub.

The Inspired Bio-Hub has been at the forefront of community engagement through horticultural workshops, thanks to generous funding from Rethink Ireland and Creative Climate Action Ireland.

Over the past few months, participants have discovered the joys of growing their own food, fostering a deep connection to nature while also promoting sustainability in our community.

With the new polytunnel, participants will have the opportunity to cultivate a wider variety of fruits and vegetables year-round, furthering their journey toward entrepreneurship.

As they grow and sell their produce, this exciting venture will not only empower them economically but also contribute to local food security.

Unsold produce will be donated to Meals on Wheels and Food Share Kerry, ensuring that surplus food benefits those in need within our community.

Inedible unsold produce will be responsibly composted, fully activating the food loop system and reinforcing our commitment to sustainable practices.

“We are delighted, proud and honored to be able to give these wonderful, inspiring and thought provoking talks a platform, covering an eclectic range of subjects, from the personal to the global perspective,” said Bryan and James.

“It was always the aspiration for our previous presentations to be just the start of a series of events promoting Tralee, Kerry and Ireland under the TEDxTralee Banner.”

Following attendance at a TED Qualifying event in Atlanta, Georgia in the US last year, TEDxTralee is now allowed to expand its live audience participation and there will be a number of surprise appearances on the day.

This is a always a fun family event and the weather looks promising so far. This event is funded by the Local Authority Waters Programme and is organised in support of Water Heritage Day.

On Monday, September 9, Tralee Tidy Towns will run a free ‘Doughnut Economics Workshop’ from 6 to 7pm at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Eco and Activity Park. This event is funded by the Tidy Towns Ireland Department of Rural and Community Development Grant.

Anne Marie Fuller of Tralee Tidy Towns said: “The way the current economy is run isn’t working for all people or the planet. There is increasing inequality and increasing climate change and biodiversity loss. We still have a long way to go to meeting the sustainable development goals.

“We need an economy that works for people and planet rather than the other way around. Doughnut Economics sets out new economic ideas and goals to help us move into just and equitable systems that are good for our communities and nature and enable us all to thrive and flourish.”

The ‘Step into the Doughnut’ workshop introduces the core idea of doughnut economics in a fun, interactive and thought provoking way.

Numbers at both events are limited so all those interested are advised to send an email expressing their interest to tidytownstralee@gmail.com

Condolences:

All involved in Milltown/Castlemaine GAA would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the family of the late Vincent Prendergast of Ardlahas, Beaufort  and Castlemaine, Co. Kerry.

Vincent was a very well known and highly respected gentleman who was a pillar in the local community particularly in the organising and running of a whole host of different events down through the years.

Vincent was also vital to a variety of fundraisers we ran at the club including the Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Ring of Kerry Solo Run in 2013 and a Golf Classic whilst he was also the main man behind the building of all the storage lockers at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park, our home grounds.

An avid supporter of our club over many years, you’d often find Vincent on the terrace side of the Paddy Burke Memorial Park supporting the senior team on a weekend.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Vincent’s family and friends at this most difficult time.
Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Acknowledgement: Club Volunteerism

Well done to a great team of volunteers led by the expertise of Paud and Kieran Hogan who completed trojan work in recent weeks by adding an additional concrete step (the 3rd in total) on the terrace side of the pitch at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown next to the stand.

A fantastic addition to our club facilities which will make the spectator experience all the better. Great stuff lads and thanks to Danny McClure for compiling a video clip (link attached below) which shows in-depth the superb volunteers we have involved in the club who always put their shoulder to the wheel and are never found wanting! ⚪⚪⚪⚪
