THE Council hopes to move towards introducing another activity at Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre this year and is looking at developing the windmill, the steam train rail line and the Wetlands as a “Lee Valley attraction”.

Director of Economic Development and Community Services, Michael Scannell, was replying to Cllr Terry O’Brien’s request to inform members as to any future plans to upgrade activities at the Wetlands Centre.

Cllr O’Brien (Lab) said that while the Wetlands is a fantastic facility, there needs to be more activities there for older children like a zipline or another type of climb to keep young people interested and coming back again and again.

“We’re constantly reviewing what we can do. Last year we had the climbing wall… and we hope to develop another project this year,” said Michael Scannell. He said the Council was also submitting an application for funding to Fáilte Ireland in relation to the existing facilities in town including the windmill, looking again at a steam train on the line between Blennerville and the Wetlands, the museum and the Wetlands itself.

“I would see the Wetlands, the steam train and the windmill as a single attraction and should be marketed as a Lee Valley attraction,” said Mr Scannell, who said there was scope for a full day’s experience between all three.

Cllr Pa Daly (SF) said he encountered people asking that – if there was land available there – a skate park be put there. Cllr Jim Finucane (FG) said that projects such as the Wetlands should be reinvented and reinvested in every five years.

He said the Council needs to look at an overall strategy for the tourism infrastructure in place in the town – such as the museum, Wetlands, canal walk and whatever becomes of the Denny Site – and to constantly review how to freshen them up every so often.
