A FEASIBILITY study is to be carried out shortly in relation to proposed renovations to the Blennerville Windmill Complex.

Labour Cllr. Terry O’Brien sought an update on the proposed works and development to the facility at the online meeting of Tralee Municipal District on Monday.

He was told that funding was secured under the Town & Village Renewal Programme to replace the 30-year-old sails of the Windmill itself, and these works together with repairs to the staging around the windmill and cap, and painting of the tower, which have been delayed because of COVID, are due to take place during the summer.

Temporary improvements to the visitor reception took place during the 2020 season with Fáilte Ireland support, but a major programme of renovation is being planned for the Visitor Centre.

Two previous applications for major funding under Fáilte Ireland programmes were unsuccessful, however working with the Blennerville Windmill Company and the North East & West Kerry Development Company, funding has been secured for a detailed feasibility study which will bring proposals to the planning stage.

A competitive tendering process for consultants has been completed and an appointment will be made by the Windmill Company within weeks.

It is expected that this report will be completed by mid-year and planning, if necessary, will be sought in the Autumn. Funding for the re-development works, that may be phased will then be sought.
