Reverse Vending Machines

SINN Féin Councillor Pa Daly is asking Kerry County Council to pilot a scheme in Tralee that would see people refunded for returning their plastic bottles.

Cllr Daly said Reverse Vending Machines allows people to return their plastic bottles in return for cash.

Such a scheme was recently piloted in Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. Cllr Daly believes Kerry County Council should look at running a similar project in Tralee.

He said: “We are all aware of the need to reduce the amount of plastic waste we produce and we have to do everything we can to stop plastic damaging our local environment. Plastic bottles makes up a large proportion of our plastic waste. Carrickmacross recently installed Reverse Vending Machines as a pilot project and I want Tralee to do the same as a pilot for the county.

“These machines gives the customer a 10c voucher for every bottle they return and the voucher can then be redeemed in their local supermarket.

“I have submitted a motion for our next Municipal District meeting calling for this scheme to be looked at for Tralee.

“This scheme won’t be a silver bullet to our overall problems with plastic waste, but it may help in reducing the amount going into our environment and damaging our eco systems.”

  1. Brilliant idea. In Tralee car parks allocated with bottle banks, I’ve witnessed huge amounts of plastic deposited. Especially from the foreign camper vans mostly French and German. Donegal reduced their fly tipping by 50% by introducing night vision CCTV’s.
