UNIVERSITY Hospital Kerry (UHK) commemorated its 40th anniversary with a heartfelt celebration, honoring the dedication and commitment of past and present staff members.

On April 25, the hospital, which was originally called Tralee General Hospital, hosted a series of special events at its Rathass site, inviting all who have contributed to its legacy over the decades.

The highlight of the day was a symbolic tree planting ceremony, marking the hospital’s past, present, and future.

Three trees, carefully selected and planted by individuals closely associated with UHK, served as poignant symbols of its growth and evolution.

As the saplings took root in the hospital grounds, they represented the enduring spirit and resilience of UHK, flourishing amidst the challenges and triumphs of the past four decades.

Following the tree planting ceremony, a specially commissioned UHK ’40th anniversary flag’ was proudly raised by a member of the hospital staff.

The flag, adorned with the emblematic logo of UHK, fluttered in the breeze, symbolizing unity, pride, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Throughout the day, past and present staff members came together to reminisce, share stories, and celebrate the remarkable journey of UHK.

Mary Fitzgerald, General Manager of UHK, remarked, “This is a significant defining moment for all the team here in UHK. Every staff member, every day strives to improve the hospital, and the past 40 years have shown the team here in UHK to be professional and compassionate in the service they provide to all our patients, their families, and members of the public who visit the hospital.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part of University Hospital Kerry’s remarkable journey and we are looking forward with great enthusiasm, to many more significant advances in patient services, in the years to come, for the community we serve”. Scroll down for photos…

Tralee Red Cross To Hold ‘Taster Session’ Next Month

.

A FREE Red Cross ‘Taster Session’ is being organised by Tralee Red Cross for Saturday, May 18 to assist prospective members find out about the society.

Tralee Red Cross Chairman, Joe McDonnell, explained that the ‘Taster Session’ is an unusual event and will help people decide if the Red Cross is suitable for them.

”Many people are looking for an organisation where they can volunteer but they are unsure what would be right for them,” said Joe.

Continued below…

.

“We have members of all ages from all walks of life volunteering with us in various roles at present. While most people in Ireland associate the Red Cross as a First Aid organisation, we can deliver a wide range of services to the local community if we have members available to provide these services.”

”A recent survey of the Tralee Red Cross membership showed that 85% of members cited the ‘feel good’ factor and meeting people as their main reasons for remaining to volunteer with us,” said Joe.

Speaking at the recruitment launch, the Kerry Director of First Aid Units, Michael O’Grady, revealed that the demand for its First Aid and Ambulance service has increased over the last few years.

”Nearly every event that is being organised now wants a First Aid presence there and it can be challenging to meet that demand. First Aid with the Red Cross has always been a great way of people getting quality training and real-life experiences under strict supervision. People thinking of taking up careers in the Medical, Nursing, Healthcare or Ambulance Service have always found this to be very beneficial and with helping them decide if those careers are right for them,” said Michael.

The ‘Taster Session’ on May 18th will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm and is open to everyone over 18 years of age.

”We hope to give attendees a broad overview of the humanitarian services we provide along with an outline of the various training programmes that will be offered to new members. There is no obligation on attendee to become members and we will also have some hands on practice in some of the roles”, said Joe.

A limited number of places are available on the session and they are being offered on a first come-first served basis by applying on email with your name and contact number to chair.tralee@irishredcross.com where further details are also available.

Sinn Féin Candidate Calls For Minor Injuries Clinic To Be Located In Tralee

.
Paul Daly.

A SINN Féin candidate in the Tralee Electoral Area for the upcoming local elections, has called on Minister Stephen Donnelly to ensure that the proposed Minor Injuries Clinic is located in Tralee.

At March’s meeting of the Southern Health Regional Forum, the HSE confirmed it is planning to develop a local injuries unit in Kerry. Paul Daly is one of four candidates running for Sinn Féin in the upcoming Local Elections on June 7.

“Minor injuries clinics see patients who have sprains, breaks , sports injuries, cuts and other serious but not life threatening injuries,” said Mr Daly.

Continued below…

.

“These types of cases cannot be treated by a GP or a pharmacist, but they also clog up A&E departments when more serious and life threatening problems need to be treated as a priority.”

“Such clinics have been established in a number of other locations, most notably in Gurranabraher in Cork. Over 16,000 attend the Cork clinic annually with waiting times average less than one hour.

“The clinic opens 8am to 8pm daily and takes a lot of pressure off the over-burdened ED. This can be a game changer for the people of Tralee and Kerry. I know that a capital submission is on the way to the Minister for decision.”

“The ideal location is Tralee as it is close to UHK with its facilities and also with closer access for patients from North Kerry and West Kerry. Any other location does not make sense,” concluded Mr Daly.
